I've been to Highland Park Wine & West Altadena Wine and finally had the opportunity to check out Silver Lake Wine. I had a free Thursday night and came here for the weekly wine tasting. This was the first location and it's also the largest. The selection is vast and there are some great wines and spirits available for purchase - including some coveted bottles of Fortaleza Tequila. The evening's line up featured French natural wine from Bob Singlar - 4 tastings for $20. Much like the other two stores the staff here are friendly and knowledgeable about the pours. They had a nice turnout including some locals who gather here on a weekly basis. I enjoyed conversing with them and meeting some of their fur babies. Hopefully, I can return for another tasting soon. read more

Great wine shop! Since COVID-19, I find placing orders online to be the easiest when shopping at this store. They have a separate pick-up line, which makes it a super streamlined experience. What I do appreciate, is that you can still stop by unannounced and someone will take your order at the door. I would recommend this if you are not sure exactly what type of wine, beer, or spirit you are looking for. I have found that the staff is great with recommendations. Hipster heaven. Orange wines take up a lot of floor space. Classicists like me will have a harder time of it. One wall features obscure spirits. Nervous service - they seemed exceedingly uncomfortable allowing me to browse, and I was asked at least five times if they could sell me I mean help me. I asked two questions, one which was answered curtly with an eye toward the door and the other begrudgingly, as if an unwilling admission. This is one of my favorite places to get someone special a birthday gift. I like to carefully select wines or liquors I think friends would enjoy according to the season or just add to their bar because of the taste or beauty of a bottle. Everyone here is warm and welcoming with any questions I may have and post-covid has actually been quite a breeze ordering for pickup via web or telephone. But, even if you do not pre order it is still easy to order at the door, too. I should also mention they have opened up their delivery area to the likes of Glendale with a minimum four bottles. This is excellent and worth it if you are needing this amount of wine and simply can't be bothered to leave home. I really appreciate the ease of parking at this location (the lot next to cha cha or meters) as well as the free Eric Junker posters that have come along with orders. As multi-cultural as LA is, I think it is awesome the posters have so far come in different languages including English, Japanese and now Español. Is Tagalog next, Eric?? I was skeptical at first because I was worried it would be crazy expensive. I was wrong! This place has lower priced wine around 12-20, and then lots of other wine selections priced higher from there. They have a ton of smaller wineries and local production which I love! The staff and super knowledgeable and helpful. I love that I stumbled upon this place because I simply parked it front to go to the German pub across the street. I don't know what makes this place so special that it can't open its doors to the community? Especially when a shop like this never even needed to shut its doors in the first place. Anyways, of course it is their prerogative but we should all be thankful for the markets that have stayed with the community during COVID rather than create cumbersome and discriminatory practices (such as not accepting cash) as a political performance for likes. The current setup is especially absurd now that restrictions have been lifted and the vast majority of people in this state over the age of 21 (their entire clientele) have been inoculated. I say this after being told to wear my mask standing on the public sidewalk and then getting quite a lot of attitude from the staff as I tried to get a recommendation and order. There are a lot of places that seem to feel reprimanding their customers is en vogue; a reminder here that it isn't. Perhaps this place will become a "cloud market" for the iPhone 12+ class to zap their orders and earn credit card points. In that case, it's hard to imagine they would be able to occupy a location zoned for retail. Temecula Wines has a nice ring to it - now serving Silverlake. read more

I had two missions, 1. Buy the perfect wine for someone who is an experienced taster and knows a lot about wines! 2. Find a wine retail shop that has people who have a comprehensive knowledge of wines. Not knowing much about wine, I felt the pressure! Thanks to Yelp, I found this place. They sell wines, spirits (Brandy, Rum, Liqueur, Borbon, Whisky, etc.), food, and glassware, etc. I think on Thursdays, Sundays, and Mondays they have wine tastings. ::Experience:: As I walked in I was overwhelmed, I saw wine everywhere! I was approached by one of the staff, I wish I got her name. She was patient, friendly, helpful, and genuine. I told her to please help me find the perfect wine for a friend. The wine needs to be red, full-bodied, and I even showed her some of the wines that I knew my friend liked. We walked around and she showed me a couple of wines. After 20 minutes of looking and talking, we found one!! My friend also likes IPA Beer so she suggested which one to get. ::Customer Service:: After I bought the wine they wrapped it beautifully in a box. On the way home, I found out that the wine that I purchased was not the right one so I drove back. The person who assisted me was with someone but she signaled me to wait. After telling her I got the wrong bottle of wine, she was happy to help me find a different one. I could tell she had the same determination that I had in finding this perfect wine. It was during the holiday so it was very busy but she still took the time to help me; she was so understanding. We looked, talked, and kept looking until we found it! Great local wine shop right in Silverlake! I was so glad to have finally tried its OG location as I've only been to the Arts District location so this was a treat for me to finally try out. I came here for a mixer and I have to say it's a great spot for a mixer setting as the bar area in the back has plenty of space and the bartenders are very nice. A flight for 3 wine will be $15 which is a great deal because they're pretty generous for the pour. After you do a flight you can get a normal sized pour for only $5! What a steal! My favorite one out of the ones I had was the Syrah as it had bold flavors. There was a pinot that wasn't my favorite and even among the group, it didn't seem to be a favorite either. Came here on a Thursday for the Thursday Night Flights. We got here around 630pm and there was a few people here and there but as the clock neared 7pm it was crowded. I know nothing about wine (it all tastes the same to me lol) but the people working there were super friendly and informative about the tastings and offerings. One of my favorite spots in LA! The store is filled with endless and delicious wine for every budget. Tasting events are such a delicious treat. Monday's - 3 very large tastes, more like pours. Bottomless cheese, olives and bread - all for $15. The Tumaca truck (Spanish food) is right outside and you can bring the food in to enjoy with your wine. The truck has very minimal vegetarian/vegan options though. Thursday's - are lit! 5 smaller tastes with the featured winemaker, bottomless bread and butter - all for $15. We went to Silverlake wine for one of their Sunday wine tastings at 3 pm. It's by reservation only, but I called at 2 pm and was able to get a spot for the two of us. They can accommodate a lot of people for the tastings since it is standing room only and people are spread out all over the store (not just a small group by the bar as I had imagined). Once you check in, I recommend grabbing a spot as close to the bar as you can that has a ledge you can put your glass / plate on. It would be fun to come here with a small group for a tasting, but not too many people as the place is small and it will be hard to find a spot for a large group. The tasting is $20 and ours had about 5 different wines paired with tapas. It's a good afternoon snack, but you'll definitely need to eat dinner afterwards (we were starving at bee-lined straight to dinner at the end). You pay for your tasting as well as any wine you will be purchasing on your way out, so the line to exit can get quite long, but it does move quickly. Each of the tastings will be different as they bring in different vendors to prepare the food / pair the wine, so unfortunately we weren't able to taste any Pinots (our passion). Everything was tasted was fine, but nothing that we wanted to purchase (unfortunately, since there is a 10% discount if you purchase one of the wines you tasted). The best thing about Silverlake Wine is that it is not pretentious at all. Super low key, chill vibe and crowd. Everyone is casual. I didn't like that we couldn't taste anything that wasn't on the tasting menu, but they did give us some good recommendations for what to try based on what we like. There's a wide range of prices here which is great (from under $15 to the $100s) but it is a bit overwhelming since most of the wines are, as they describe "enlightening, affordable, rare, conversation pieces, one of a kind, sexy, practical, culinary" - so you probably have never heard of most of them. read more

I lived in Los Feliz for five years and always figured I'd Yelp Silverlake Wine when I went in for one of its frequent tastings, something I idly intended to do the entire time I was in the area. I never made it in, so I guess it'll probably never happen, but I still have plenty to say about this iconic wine shop. I've only been in a few times over the years, quick stops to grab bottles to take to dinners and birthday parties in and around Silver Lake. It's an attractive shop, small but comfortable and tightly stocked. I've always found the parking easy and the service fast, friendly, and helpful. Wine stores live and die by the knowledge of their employees, and the people here seem to know their stuff. The wine selection is extensive and interesting, with a wide variety of bottles for most budgets. Silverlake Wine has managed to become much more than a boutique wine store. It's now synonymous with a certain kind of hip, youthful bon vivantism, a lifestyle that's casually luxurious, but affordable to anyone paying Silver Lake rent. The Silverlake Wine team puts on the Friday night wine tastings at Barnsdall Park, a summer staple for yipster Angelenos, and they've done lovely work with places like L & E and Everson Royce Bar. They have a sister shop in Highland Park Wines, and a new Silverlake Wine location in the Arts District. Not bad for a neighborhood wine store. This team knows what it's doing, and I'm one of many smiling suckers buying what they're selling. read more

I met up with a buddy here on Monday for a wine tasting, and had SUCH a lovely time. When I lived in Italy, my friends and I would often meet up for a glass of wine and share a plate of nibbles. As such, wine bars hold a special place in my heart :) We made fast friends with Andrew, who was visiting from New Orleans and standing next to us at the bar. We bonded over red wine and the delicious cheese plate. (Seriously, I could live and die happy if, for the rest of my life, I could only subsist on loaves of crusty baguette, cheese, and red wine. I believe this diet is called Mediterranean AWESOME.) I don't recall the name of the red wine we drank, but it was Portuguese and it had a wonderful aroma to it... a bit fruity, a bit floral. As you may have guessed, my expertise in wine is largely limited to my ability to drink and engage in conversation with perfect strangers :) ANYWAY. I really liked Silverlake Wine b/c it was not pretentious at all (like some wine bars like to be), and the guys who worked there were super friendly and knowledgeable. You guys rock! And...!
