I figured it was time to bump my original 4-star rating to a big ole 5-STAR! While living in DTLA, BUZZ became a staple of life. Instead of getting all crazy on a Friday night, I'd opt to head to BUZZ for their famous "beer & wine" tasting events. I highly suggest following them on Twitter and signing up for their emails - they are constantly informing you of beer events. Flights on flights was the name of the game. For around $10-15 you could indulge yourself in beer, wine, the best chips and sometimes complimentary snacks that went along with the specific beer flights. My favorite event was their "Indulgent Beer O'clock" - chocolately stout/ipa brews and mounds and mounds of milk & dark chocolate. And did I mention the staff here is kick ass? These are the hipster cool kids that actually talk to you and KNOW what they are talking about. When you need a suggestion, they are quick to help out. I like the concept of Buzz, with the available wine bar attached, and the helpful staff when it comes to selecting wines, but I am consistently unimpressed with the wines they have in stock. Time after time I've tasted their wines, mostly in the $20 range, with some more expensive, and a few less, and never feel the value is there. It's a matter of trusting the staff when it comes to selection, as the choices include almost entirely obscure, unknown boutique wines. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, just that the wine seems to not hold up to the asking prices. Recently I tried one of their reds for around $35. The cork was rotten at the base and the wine all cloudy. They happily replaced the bottle with another, but it was exactly the same. Cloudy with sediment at the bottom and a rotten cork. It was drinkable, albeit a bit sour tasting (didn't want to go back again). I also had a random white from their cooler case, and it was without any detectable tannins, no oak, no butter, but plenty of water. This was the most watery, neutral bottle of wine I've ever had. It couldn't possibly insult anyone, and I thought it might go well with a briny, cucumbery raw oyster, but not anything good for sipping on its own. I am admittedly prone to shopping the big box wine shops, drawn to familiarity and safety. Perhaps if I was half the wine snob I sometimes pretend to be, I would see far more of a jewel in Buzz. read more

Super obsessed with this spot! I've only been once but I definitely want to come back! The concept is super cool and there should be more of these. The concept is easy: you choose a drink you would like to buy, you pay for it and then you Can drink it in the bar area. They have a ton of different alcohol options from wine and cider to beer and champagne. It should be noted that there is a corking fee for each drink but it's a reasonable price. The day that I went, there was a pay per view boxing event (Pacquiao) and one of the workers there connected it to the projector so we could watch! Although I cannot speak to the wine selection, I can definitely tell you I have never seen such a greater bottled craft beer selection in LA (yes, even better than BevMo). They have an area with a huge selection of single craft bombers from Belgium and Germany. New to beer? All good. Each beer, similar to Bevmo, has a short description of where it's from, how much alcohol content and just a brief background about the beer on the tab so that you can navigate your way through the craze. Buzz offers a well-stocked, interestingly-curated wine and beer shop with friendly staff in the heart of DTLA. Both the wine (primary focus) and beer assortments are wide, eclectic, and tasty. They have 100+ wines for under $20, many of which I've never encountered (and can't even find online). Bottles of wine cascade by country/variety through much of the shop, while cold beer, spirits, and chilled wines are available in the refrigerated section to the left. Wine ranges from easy-priced champagnes to Portuguese vinho verde to hearty Merlots and sweet muscadets and even honey mead. I was also impressed by the beer and sake selections. The staff tends to be knowledgeable and friendly without being pushy. NOTE: the back bar area recently closed its service - no more beers on tap or wine tasting flights - but if you get a bottle, the staff still lets you drink at the bar. read more

This place has a great selection of beer, but never seem to have Old Chub yet carry Dale's all the time. I have been here before and when their posted hours say open until. 2am, you expect them to be open until 2am. Living downtown I've been here multiple times and had generally good experiences. The customer service here is pretty aloof. You may/may not get a greeting when you walk in, but they will usually only talk to you if you talk to them first which is off putting as a hospitality professional. When they do talk, employees are usually friendly, just not proactive people people. After my 3rd time coming before 2am, seeing customers in the store and having some security guard bark that they are closing early while the staff is just shooting the shit, I feel like this review is overdue. Very wide selection of beer, seems to be a decent wine selection, but that's not my forte. They have a sign up sheet for keeping up to date on events that they produce, but after signing up for that at least 3x, I'm pretty sure they either never have events, or can't read block lettering. This place would be amazing if it weren't so blatantly and ridiculously overpriced. Very great selection, super knowledgeable staff, great area, nice atmosphere, ect. But it is sooo overpriced it's almost stupid to go there more than once. I use alesmith speedway stout as a good pricing checker. (They're local and there's no excuse to be super overpriced) For example when they sold it at trader joes it was 10.99 which is what you pay at the brewery. At whole foods (a place joked about for being pricey) it's 11.99 at bevmo (and don't go there for it's beer for this reason) it's 14.19 and here at buzz it's 15.99. Buzz is a great wine and beer shop in a happening part of downtown L.A. I've been in three times, all to pick up wine for BYOB dinners, both in and out of the neighborhood. Buzz is hip and pretty, not huge but very well stocked, with a sizable refrigerated section and bottles of wine stacked from wall to wall. There's a tasting area in back, but most of the store is devoted to inventory. The wines are well labeled, with bottles highlighted in every section. The prices are very reasonable--Buzz is geared toward a much younger clientele than, say, a K & L. The staff is knowledgeable enough to be helpful, and if you ask for recommendations, it looks like they keep most suggestions under $20. I've liked all the wine and beer I've gotten from Buzz. Nothing high end, but everything good and affordable. I'll keep coming back for my table wine needs, especially in this part of town. read more

It is clear that SOME employees at this shop are biased against Black males. On a Friday afternoon, I decided to swing by this local wine shop to purchase a bottle of sparkling wine. When I entered, a male cashier was busy at the cash register attending to a customer. Besides the one customer at the cashier, there were no other customers in the store when I entered. As for employees, there was 1 male cashier at the cash register and 1 male employee sitting on a bar stool directly in front of the beer/wine cooler near the cash register counter. I walked to the sparkling wine area directly behind the cashier and reviewed wines for 2-3 mins while the male employee who was ( obviously, not busy) seated on bar stool sat ignoring me, looking out the front door and monitoring his phone. Based upon his non-responsiveness, I assumed that perhaps he worked in security and was not responsible for customer service/sales. When I realized that some of the sparking wines did not have pricing details (such as Ferrari sparkling wine), I then stood for a bit, looked back at the cashier counter (directly in front of the employee who was sitting and continuing to ignore me) for about 1 min. The other male employee behind the cashier was still working with a customer so I then stood in line to await my turn to talk to the cashier. The male employee sitting on the bar stool was then directly in front of me and continued to ignore me. Not 30 seconds later, a woman entered the front door and walked over to the EXACT same place where I had stood contemplating wine prices and the male employee sitting on the bar stool immediately perked up and said, "Hi! Is there something I can help you with?!" I was in shock. Just a min or two before then, I had stood there as a customer who needed assistance. I was completely ignored by this male employee! I immediate walked directly over to this employee (after waiting in line for assistance) and asked, "Hi, do you having pricing information on wines?". He then said, "oh yeah, what can I help you with?". FOR REAL???!!! Why was I invisible to you 1-2 mins before? Did you think that as a Black male customer that I was not worthy of a greeting or assistance before? I replied, "Is there a reason why you did not offer me assistance earlier?" His reply was "......ughhhhhhh.... sorry, she looked a little lost". I simply replied, "Shame on you!" and walked out the door. To my DTLA Community: My experience at this wine shop made it clear to me that I was not considered to be worthy of respect or consideration as a potential customer simply due to the color of my skin. If you are bothered by this, please do not support this local business that is not inclusive of all community members. To the owners of BUZZ WINE SHOP: If you care about your community, please review the cameras and address this situation immediately. Our community deserves much better than this. read more

The price range of the wine is around $20.00 and they consider the wine to be "super" expensive at around $50.00. Went there at 8pm on Saturday July 1st to buy a bottle of Pau Maui Vodka, it was $23.00 plus tax so total was $25.50, so I paid the cashier a tall black guy with dreadlocks a new $100 bill for payment. He immediately counterfeit marker check the bill I gave to him. He gave me a $50 with no counterfeit marker check, $20, and (2) $5.00 bill in change. So on June 1st at a 7-11 near my apartment I used the $50 dollar bill to buy some items there, the cashier took the $50 and placed it in the deposit box and it immediately got spit out he tried it again and again it got spit out/rejected. The cashier told me that the bill is counterfeit and confiscated it from me..... the deposit box has a counterfeit scanner for bills. So I l Ft and went back to Buzz wine and beer shop where I made contact with a Hispanic supervisor. I explained the above what happened, he call the cashier who's name is Raphael. The store supervisor called called him and told him what happened and he lied and said that the $50 he gave me was counterfeit checked. There are security cameras above the cash registers and I counted my change in front of him to boot. Hey Buzz wine and beer passing counterfeit money is a federal offense (felony) fix this situation or the secret service will be visiting your shop! The supervisor has my contact information! FYI to anyone who plans to give them your business DON'T! You shouldn't have to worry about shady ass cashiers who are willing to lie and steal money from you! read more

Sadly, Buzz is pretty pretentious. I would love a neighborhood beer shop that sells a selection of familiar, drinkable beers that aren't stocked solely for their obscurity. They are trying way too hard to prove they have good taste by stocking a whole lot of strange and overly bitter beers. Every time I try to go buy a Kirin or Sapporo or any number of ordinary drinkable beers I'm told they're out of stock. I end up lost, staring at the shelves and, yes, the people who work there can be helpful, but I shouldn't always need an expert or a translator when I'm buying a beer. All this said, I do come here every so often to try something different. I just think they are missing/alienating some potential customers. First time in the shop and the counter guy wouldn't engage me with any question or comment i had, so i figured he was having a bad day, but then when his co worker came around he was as nice as can be to him. What gives? Prices seemed unnecessarily high. One 16oz hard cider for $5.50? You can get a 4 pack of the same stuff in town at whole foods for $10.99.
