A tree started leaning over badly in my parents' back yard, just after Christmas. We needed it down quickly as it was close to the corner of the house, power lines, and our neighbors' fence. I called two other tree removal companies that serve Highland Park, and they weren't going to be open for weeks. Frank returned my email message right away, and came out for a quote. Even though I wasn't able to get there in time, due to a minor veterinary emergency, he was able to quote me and leave it for me in the mail box. The quote was very reasonable for tree removal and stump grinding. I opted just for the tree removal, as the stump is in an inconspicuous spot that I can easily plant around. We scheduled a time just after new years day, when it would be convenient for both of our schedules. Frank's team showed up in force, and were able to back their truck and chipper even down our uneven driveway (I grew up there, and I still occasionally have trouble backing up and down the curved area). They let me know they were just coming from another job, and had to go on break, which was just fine. When they finally got started, their team attacked the tree in a coordinated effort - they cut off limbs with a chainsaw, tied off large segments, and then proceeded to take the tree down a bit at a time. They way they tied it off, they were able to prevent any damage to the fence and our yard. They were done so quickly, I actually missed them when they left. I inspected their work, and I was very impressed at the job Simo Brothers had done removing the tree in the back yard. The ground was soft, but they managed to fell the tree without damaging anything. Any time we need a tree removed, Frank at Simo Brothers will be my very first call. read more

Frank and his crew of 7 skillfully removed a dying Norway Maple from our front yard earlier this December...hated to see it go, but it was a liability in waiting. What we really appreciated was their attention to detail in leaving the surrounding city streets better than before the removal and for leaving our lawn without a branch to be seen. The stump grinding can be a mess...but everything was carefully blended in with the existing mulch beds...you wouldn't know a tree was there. My wife, son and I were watching tv the night before last when we heard what sounded like a tremendous traffic accident right outside our house. When I went outside to see what had happened, I found one of two very old Box Elder trees that border the sidewalk in front of our place had fallen into our driveway, narrowly missing the front porch. This was not a small tree. I'm including photos. We were very lucky, a little rattled, and weren't going anywhere the next morning until the driveway got cleared. Fortunately, we remembered Frank at Simo from some tree pruning he had done for a neighbor, and we called his emergency number. This was at 10 p.m. He returned our call minutes later, despite having had surgery earlier in the day! The next morning the Simo crew arrived at 7 a.m. as promised and had the driveway cleared by 8 a.m. Lots of heavy equipment was required and they knew what they were doing. I can't recommend Simo enough, for smaller jobs and for an unexpected major production like ours. read more

Guess what! These people cut down the wrong tree at my house, too! We had red ribbons on the trees that needed to be cut, but they started putting ropes on the tree centered in our yard. I was still in my pajamas, so I called and started crying...saying I think they've started cutting a tree than was only supposed to be trimmed. The woman said, " Who do you think knows more about trimming? You or them?" I'm getting more upset and saying, " Well, then they're trimming too much!" Then I got dressed real quick and ran outside and told them to quit! But by then they'd cut too much and we lost the tree. He sent us a bill...with that tree included! I wouldn't pay anything, as I was so angry. He told us to court! I went, thinking I couldn't loose, but the workers had all gone back to Mexico and he lied saying we really wanted the tree cut. Guess what! We had to pay his bill and he had to buy us a little bitty tree. It couldn't be planted in the same spot, since the tree roots were there. We had to build a stone area above ground, in the middle of the patio, to plant the little tree in. This man is a liar and a cheat. I just happened to look on yelp to see what he was up to. I honestly figured he'd be out of business by now. read more

We called SImo brothers on the recommendation of a friend. They gave us a quick and complete estimate. Compared to the other estimates it was much more competitive and lower and more comprehensive. Other companies told us they could remove a four-story tree.But SImo brothers pointed out that we needed to protect our landscaping and use a cherry picker to protect their workers. So you cut down the WRONG tree! Not a tree that was tagged by city, not a tree that was dead, not a pine but a blue spruce. A 30 ft blue spruce smack dab in the middle of the yard, with flowers planted underneath. We all make mistakes. Some taller and older than others. You admit the horrible deed and claim you will not charge me and replace the tree, not once but twice you say this. Upon the receipt of the invoice for 450 dollars for other services performed that day you will be happy to replace the tree that you DESTROYED. Do not use Simo Brothers. When you do something wrong stand by your word and fix it. Been a month now. No new tree, no phone call. Just an invoice. Pathetic. read more
