The best wine in Door County. The tastings are the right size for a tasting and for the price. The bartenders are friendly and answer questions knowledgeably. Gorgeous area around the winery though I haven't spent time roaming the grounds. This has been a pretty regular stop for me in Door County for the last several years and if I didn't have bottles left from last year I would have stopped again. If you like dry wines the American Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and the Cabernet Sauvignon are very good. The Tempranillo and the Door County Cherry wine are good for a medium sweet and sweet respectively. Small winery in Door County that has a bargain priced tasting of $5 for 5 pours. The facility itself is quite nice with a large spacious wine bar at one end of the building with adjacent windows highlighting grape vines outside which is a nice visual queue. Other side of the building offers a nice selection of wine related merchandize offering you an immersive wine tasting experience. Relative to the wines available for tasting, the majority are on the sweeter side with a very limited selection of dry reds to sample from. Lastly the People at the winery are super friendly, love discussing the winery and were having some fairly hilarious discussions with us which was very nice. Overall based on my personal palate this is 3 stars for the wine (lack of big red drier wines a detractor) but four stars for the total wine experience and the great friendly staff that work at this winery. read more

FREE WINE TASTINGS. 4 PER PERSON. Magic words indeed, particularly when you happened to pay in the past up to $20 for the same privilege. Sure, Door County is no Napa Valley. But, psssst.....I have a sweet secret to tell you.....Simon Creek Winery does some pretty nice grape juice. Of the alcoholic kind. Me likey. The place itself is off the beaten path. One word of advice: don't use Google map to get there. It will send you in the middle of nowhere, in an a dead-end alley protected by Cerberus. Or one of his friends. But once you arrive at destination you will be welcomed by baby vineyards (they are 7 years old), a nice barn and an adorable store where treasures await. You walk up at the counter, choose a wine from the list and get down to business. The more, the merrier and the more wines to try. They even provide you with little crackers to 'clean your palate'. How cute. I ended up being so enamored that I left with six bottles: - a Cabernet Sauvignon, full-bodied and spicy - a Gewurtztraminer, sweet but not overtly so - a Alexa cerise, a dry cherry dessert wine (just because) - a Peninsula Gold, a cream sherry with a hint of almond - two Light Sweet Muscat, similar to my beloved Ice Wine, with a hint of peach Lovely. We bought a glass of Sauvignon and Viognier and sipped on them on the wonderful deck overlooking the backyard and the vineyards. The place was ours. Definitely one of my trip hightlights. read more

Ugh! This winery is so not Door County representative. It seemed so promising with its hidden location on a winding country road. Do not bother. Just stop in your tracks when you come to Door Peninsula Winery. It doesn't get any better than that! I walked in and was greeted by a sign reading, "5 tastings for $5." The small tasting area was filled with a trolley load from the winery tour company and I didn't feel like waiting for a paid tasting so I decided to just grab a couple bottles. I was surprised by the limited selection, just two reds at the time I was there. Each bottle was $16. I asked the lady who was wandering around near the cash register if I could just get a free tasting of the two bottles I was about to purchase to make sure I liked them. She said I could for $1 each. Wow. I've never been to a winery that didn't allow at least 1 free tasting for someone about to make a purchase. Especially at a higher price point than most of the other wines in Door County. I decided to take the high road and just spend $32 to try the wines since they weren't going to offer the sort of customer service I have become accustomed to and pick up the $2 charge. I haven't tried them yet so I cannot comment on the value. I will never go back and I would not recommend this winery with so many other options in the area that provide better customer service. I have to assume they are trying to keep demand lower by having such a stringent policy. That makes sense if you want to stay small, but charging a $1 fee for a single tasting just comes across as tacky and cheap. Maybe find a better way of controlling growth? read more

They did a nice job of keeping people distanced. There were also not a lot of people in here on a Thursday afternoon in October. The wine tasting was ok, server was pleasant and gave us some information on what we had. While I'm usually a bold red fan, we did walk away with a bottle of hazelnut port. We went to several wineries while visiting Door County and this was one of our favorites. They weren't very busy when we were there so we didn't have to fight for attention like we did at some of the others. They offer a free tasting, which was very nice. The staff who helped us was very knowledgeable. When you are finished with your tasting, they offer wine by the glass or you can buy a bottle and they will open and recork for you if you'd like to go that route. We decided to go for a glass of the Untouchable Re. We took it outside to the patio so we could discuss what we wanted to purchase to take home. We ended up buying three bottles, which they put in a nice box that made it so much easier to get back to Chicago. We'll definitely come back the next time we're in town! read more

Visited this Winery on our recent trip to Door county. It's a lil interior compared to other vineyards that we crossed on our way. A small, decent place with a bar at one end and a gift store. Also have a patio that overlooks the vineyard. They have an aging and packing unit which they give a tour of. The staff is very courteous and friendly. We can sample 4 free wines, after which you are free to purchase and drink or just relax. There is a small pantry section from where you can purchase packaged meat, fish, chips or cheese to go with the wine. On the whole a decent place but nothing wow about it. read more

I love dry reds, but this winery (as most in Door County) definitely specializes in sweet fruit wines. They did have a lovely Souvignon Blanc for around $19 that I purchased, however. I also really like Chardonnay, but theirs was too sweet for me. Tastings are $5 and come with a souvenir glass. The gift shop is amazing; it was full of fun, quirky wine-related items. There is also outside seating where you can sit and look out over the vineyard. Very pretty, and I imagine if you like the sweet wines, this is a good place to stop. If you like dry reds, like me, I would stop for the gift shop but maybe pass on the tasting! read more

I suppose it would be pleasant to sit on their veranda, sipping wine and gazing at the vineyard. If you do, my advice is to bring your own wine. In my humble but not completely inexperienced opinion, seven out if the eight wines we tasted were terrible. Plonk. The eighth was fine if you want a sweet desert wine to remind you of your Door County trip. At 12 bucks you can't go far wrong. Their store is full of tchotchkes you can pick up to commemorate your visit. Nothing interested me, and I think you'd do well to take a pass. We had a great visit to this winery. It is a little off the main road, but not difficult to find at all. We walked in for a tasting, and there was only one other couple at the tasting bar. You can try 4 wines on the house. My husband and I got to tasting - all whites for me, all reds for him. I actually liked all the wines I tasted, which was a first for me. The servers were great. When a large party (a group of wedding guests, hitting the wine trail in between the wedding and reception) arrived, they took turns pouring and always made sure we weren't forgotten. We had a bit of time to kill, so when I saw they had a small outside patio where you could relax and enjoy a glass, I suggested we do exactly that. My husband abstained since he was the DD, so I got to enjoy a glass of sauvingon blanc with him taking a couple sips here and there. We sat there for a while, maybe an hour or so, and it was lovely. I was told that on certain nights, the winery has live music with bands playing in the corner of the patio. I could see that being a really fun night. This is a great winery to visit. I stopped in here for a wine tasting and they have really nice wines. You get to try four for free. I tried all the reds and their chardonnay. I'm not a big white wine drinker (I think they'er too sweet) but the chardonnay was very good. It wasn't too sweet at all. My favorite one was the Speakeasy Red. They also have a really nice seating area on the back porch where you can take a glass of wine and relax. You can enjoy your wine while taking in a great view of the vines. To me, the Simon Creek Winery is the best winery in Door County. They have a very great selection of wines, both red and white. I have not found one of their wines that I would not take home. Their prices are in line with the other higher end grape wineries in Door County. They are a little off the beaten path, but in Door County, really nothing is that far away. They have the best building of all the wineries. It is just plain beautiful and worth stopping just to walk through, even if you do not like wine. Very friendly staff. read more

I like the wines but am very disappointed that they now are charging for sampling. Sure you keep the glass, but I don't need any more glasses. Used to bring all our out of town guests, but won't now, unless they go back to free tasting or at least applied the fee to your purchase.
