Was really excited to try this place since I live so close to it, but sadly it was overcrowded with people who were mainly on their laptops sitting with an empty cup or not even a cup at all. I understand most coffee shops like Starbucks are known to do this but they have the space for it. Simona cafe does not at all have such space for people to just lounge and hang out for long periods of time. Those people who work from the coffee shop are killing mom and pop cafes. I would recommend either a time limit or put restrictions on laptops at the cafe. It provides a better experience for everyone and keeps business more operational with continuous revenue coming in. Mike(just a random name) on his laptop literally applying for jobs or doing who knows what does not need to be at the coffee shop from 8-11 with his one black coffee and his laptop. Laptops should not be allowed in the early mornings it limits people who actually want to pay money to sit down and grab a drink and food. read more

Whenever I travel coffee is one of the first things I put on my to do list. Because of this, Sweet Science Coffee was one of my first stops in the D.C. area. It's a nice, cozy spot with plenty of coffee options. I opted to have a large black drip coffee. It was a very solid cup of Joe. Some vanilla notes came through, but overall very balanced. The beans were clearly roasted well and the drink was a good temperature. Sometimes I've noticed drip can be lukewarm, but this did not disappoint. Patio seating and coffee on a chilly day are a great combo. If you're in the area and looking for your caffeine fix, look no further than Sweet Science Coffee. I don't want to 'mona too much about this place, but it missed the mark for me. This cafe had all the makings for a great spot- friendly baristas, multiple seating options, and an extensive menu. But I think that's where they went wrong. I ordered one of their specialty lattes (gingerbread latte) and ended up paying nearly $10 for a basic latte. The latte had none of the promised flavors, but the espresso was decent (so maybe stick to the basic menu). They had both almond and oat milk (both were an additional $1). My next issue is they have these very cool mugs, but the lack of handle made them an easy spilling hazard especially when trying to maneuver around the tightly packed tables. The music was classic indie tunes that were blasting a little too loud which means everyone was talking quite loud so if you are planning to study or read, maybe leave the books at home. The bathroom was clean, but in a very unfortunate spot- right by the pickup counter (someone was leaning on the door and I couldn't get out). Overall, I'd consider going back if I was in a pinch, but I won't make this a regular stop. read more

This NoMa cafe used to be Sweet Science, which I reviewed above. It seems nothing had changed besides the name--and that is for the most part for the better, because Sweet Science had, and Simona still has, the most delicious orange-chocolate scone: moist, flavourful, melts on the tongue. The cappucino and even the drip coffee were truly marvelous. The ambience is alright--perhaps the walls a bit bare, but on the upside, all their plants and flowers are real and not plastic. I came here with two friends since we saw good Yelp reviews and wanted to try it out! We all got something different - cold brew (as recommended by the barista), latte, and specialty tea (Cascara Coffee Cherry Tea from Verve). All of our drinks were very subpar. The cold brew was very bland and tasteless. I couldn't pick out the tasting notes of this cold brew at all. The barista had recommended it but the three of us didn't think it was anything special. Definitely a 2/5. The latte tasted more like milk than anything. I personally could not pick out the taste of the espresso. It was overall boring and we don't recommend this if you're into the strong espresso after taste. Also a 2/5. Now, the specialty tea was something else. The tea itself tasted like the herbal Chinese soup my mom makes when I was younger to help with "cleansing", and it's not something children enjoy drinking. Weird and unpleasant taste that the three of us did not like. On top of that, it was $6. My friend still managed to finish a good chunk of the tea only to realize all the honey was not mixed into the tea and that it was all the way at the bottom. I would give this drink a 1/5. Overall, the ambiance of this cafe was nice. It was a bit hard to find but the interior and exterior were well decorated. Lots of seating which is great! Love this cute cafe! Snugged a couple blocks away from Clarendon blvd, Simona is perfect for that indoor-outdoor book/newspaper reading vibe. They have a full breakfast and non-breakfast menu in addition to a handful of pastries and they're currently repping rare bird coffee beans. The service is friendly and quick. They even bring out your order when you get it for here. I definitely recommend The Lyon sandwich - classic prosciutto and cornichons on a buttered baguette. The baguette was fresh and they were generous with the filling :). The smoked salmon was tasty too but the foccacia was just a little dry and overall it could've used some acidity. Cafe drinks were good - not overly sweet on their lattes. I'll definitely be back to try more things on their menu and in the least to enjoy their patio on a nice sunny day! read more

Wow! What a place. I absolutely loved this coffee shop. I used to live in Courthouse (now in Ballston) and the old coffee shop that used to be in this location didn't seem like it was my scene. I noticed on a recent walk that the place looked different, and gave it a try. I'm so glad I did! The vibes, coffee, ambiance and everything else was on point. I didn't order food but the girl next to me got the mature cheese and it smelled and looked so decadent that I'll order it on my next visit. I'm really into this cozy place. I've been eager to visit the Sweet Science Coffee shop in D.C. since pre-COVID times but never got around to it. However recently, I discovered that they had a second shop in Arlington and decided to check it out. It's a small shop but has seating both indoors and outdoors. On my first visit in the fall, I tried the honey sesame cappuccino. The perfect autumnal drink of espresso with house-made honeycomb candy bits, honey tahini sauce, oat milk, topped with black sesame. I hope they bring it back this fall! We also tried the famous Japanese pea flower tea. This is fairly common in Asia, but this is the first time I've seen it in a coffee shop in the DC area. Also known as butterfly pea flower tea, the native Southeast Asia butterfly pea plant has blue flower petals with purple undertones. It's an herbal tea that as the pH of the tea changes, so does the color of the tea. When brewed alone, the tea is a rich blue color. When an acidic element like lemon juice is added, the tea turns a pink to purple color. The taste is floral and not too overly sweet. I would highly recommend trying the Japanese pea flower tea even if just to see the science behind it! My husband loves Sweet Science's Illicitrus. This is their espresso soda with lime and yuzu mist. We've had versions of an espresso soda at various coffee shops, and we can say that Illicitrus is the best we've had so far. Love that they spritz their white sage/yuzu and meyer lemon mist on the espresso soda after it's made. All in all, we've had a variety of espresso drinks, coffee, teas, and even some of the food over the last six months. It has become one of our go-to coffee places in the area. I will admit some of the seasonal offerings are not my favorites, but I will also say that they are one of the most creative coffee shops. They try and offer new and innovative drinks all the time. The staff is very approachable, friendly, and helpful, making Sweet Science a favored local coffee shop for me. read more

This is an adorable neighborhood spot, and the outdoor area is especially cute. The pastries are made in-house, and the coffee is very good. That said, it's unbelievable to me that I'm not able to get a hot cup of coffee here. They do not have any ceramic mugs, only plastic (ew, hot things in plastic, but I digress), and by the time you begin drinking your coffee, it's cold. I don't want to dog too much on a small local business, especially one that had a decent amount of people hanging out in it on a Sunday afternoon. The service is slow but probably due to just one person making the coffee (probably due to COVID). It appears a lot of people call in their orders ahead of time and in retrospect, I would do the same in the future. It took over 20 minutes to get a coffee so beware if you were in a hurry. I got the special 'winter is not coming' latte and it was good but a bit sweet and I could barely taste the coffee. Great if you have a sweet tooth though! I would give it another chance! read more

Sweet Science has been open for a while but finally had the chance to get here. I regret taking so long -- it is truly outstanding. Key points: 1. EXPERT BARISTA. The main difference between great and just ok espresso drinks (cappucino, cortado, latte...) is the quality of the foaming. Big bubbles = bad, microfoam = good. The barista here this morning (Charlie -- you can see him in the background) crushed it. One of the best cappucinos I've ever had. 2. AMBIANCE. The relaxed music is perfect. It doesn't distract from doing things on your phone/laptop. Most coffee shops -- even good ones like the nearby For Five -- have blaring rock/hip-hop. If people wanted that, they wouldn't be at a coffee shop. Sweet Science is the rare coffee shop to understand this. A pleasure to hang out, relax and have elite-level coffee. read more

The staff was nice and the seasonal/alternative offerings abundant. I opted for the honey sesame cappuccino because it sounded interesting and not too sweet. They use Califia Oat Milk (barista) and it's nuttiness goes well with the other flavors in the drink. Each table had their mask policy on it and hand sanitizer. Overall I had an okay experience. After a brief search on Yelp, I decided we should try out this place since it was new and we haven't been here yet, and it was less than 10 minutes away. We ordered online for pick up (through their square site) and thought it'd be a quick drive down and back. DRINKS (4/5) The coffee was solid and the honey sesame latte was really good (not too sweet at all)! The only thing is everything was kind expensive. The latte was $6, which is understandable given that it was made with oat milk, and the coffee was $4. I mean comparatively I know it's maybe the average price for a better coffee shop, but it still hurts a little every time I go out to buy coffee instead of making at home :') FOOD (2/5) Ok this was probably the most disappointing of all. We got the Breakwich ($10) which was a jalapeno cheddar biscuit with egg, cheese, greens, onion jam, and "facon" (eggplant pretending to be bacon). It was pretty meh. It was small, pretty sure everything was microwaved, had an okay taste/had a little kick, but overall very average sandwich. I didn't like the eggplant, it was chewy and not crispy at all. It's like one of those things where once you bite into it you have to either use your hands to rip off or eat the whole thing because you can't really chew the piece off... If that makes sense lol. The Virginia location for this hipster coffee place isn't quite as hip as the DC one, because it's Virginia. However, it is a very pretty shop, with an interesting selection of high-end beverages. Being unable to get online ordering to work, I went in person and found a coconut-banana drink with spices. Not really what I was expecting, but I thought it worth a try and it was an intriguing mix of flavors. They had a few light food options as well, and enough indoor and outdoor space to consume them on the premises if one would like.
