And I remembered that Lyon Hall had all day happy hour including a special on oysters. So we put in a reservation and game. We were promptly seated and it wasn't too busy today. We did a dozen oysters and I ordered the Hangar Steak Frites. The oysters were fresh and delicious and the steak frites were cooked to perfection. I loved how buttery the hand cut fries were. My sister-in-law got the French dip sandwich and she liked it but said the dipping sauce was a salty and she likes salty stuff so her saying it was too salty says a lot. I met one of my friends here for brunch over the weekend. We sat outside since I had my pup. We started off with cocktails while we reviewed the menu. An Old Fashioned for my friend and a French 75 for me. My drink was bubbly and refreshing. My friend had never tried Escargots before and even our server recommended it. So we ordered Escargots for an appetizer which were absolutely delicious. Lots of melted cheese and flavor in the dish. My friend enjoyed it more than he thought he would. I went to Lyon Hall for happy hour on a Thursday. We were able to get a high top table without having a reservation. They have good happy hour deals for drinks and snacks. I enjoyed the SJF cocktail, which was kind of like a Moscow mule. We had a soft pretzel with cheese and mustard but it wasn't very good. I would skip the pretzel next time. Came here last minute with my roommates, as the other restaurant we planned to dine at fell through. I have heard about Lyon Hall, but did not expect it to be as nice and fancy. I for some reason thought it was more of a bar scene, but was nicely surprised. It was restaurant week when we came, so they were offering a $55 3-course meal special. We opted out and just decided to order off the normal menu. I was surprised with how quickly they sat us. The hostess was very nice, however, our server we felt was not as attentive to our table. We went through a majority of our dinner with empty waters. I had a large lunch so I decided not to get an entree, but instead get their tuna tartare and the caesar salad. I was really looking forward to the salad, but unfortunately i did not enjoy it as much as I hope. It was not made with romaine lettuce as I am used to, and it was drenched in dressing to the point where it was a little hard to eat. However, the tuna tartare I could not recommend enough. I see that it has been a minute since I've reviewed Lyon Hall. While not a cherished regular we do visit at least a few times a year. Looking at my last review my overall rating is largely the same but for slightly differnt reasons. Since 2018 I've seen ups and downs. Overall, we continue to enjoy the food, but the service can never seem to stay consistently good. Sometimes we have a good server who is on top of things and other times they struggle with some relatively basic requests. Also, on our last visit, this was hardly a catastrophe, but it could have been. We make clear on the reservation and with the server our lactose allergy. We ordered sorbet for desert after only one taste (fortunately) we knew that it was ice cream with loads of milk. It was substituted but not much of an apology or even a free desert. Not enough to demand a manager visit, but it was a little annoying considering another couple of screwups during the meal of other wrong dishes being brought to our table. Based on that, we will proably take a longer break than usual from Lyon Hall. Overall the price is not bad for the quality of the we typically order the same things. For our last visit, one starter, two main disshes, the sorbet, and a bottle of wine. Total price with tax and tip was $186.00. read more

Not a place for someone that is disabled. I went there for brunch this past Saturday which was raining. There was a puddle in front of the door that I had to walk through wearing a rocking boot (medical device to alleviate stress on foot) on my one foot for pain relief and sandals on the other. My foot was soaked in the sandals. The food and service was good. French toast could use more fruit and whipped cream instead of only on one piece of French toast. I had to use the restroom and didn't want to use the stairs to the basement level so I took the back elevator to the kitchen. I nearly fell. The floor was super slick with grease/oil. One staff person (maybe a manager) said it wasn't grease but humidity. The bottom of the boot had no traction under it and was sliding on the floor. When I left the restroom I didn't want to take a chance of falling so I climbed the stairs back to the main level. The same man came towards me and said he laid a rug down for me. As I was mentioning, I didn't want to take a chance of falling. There was also moisture on the floor in front of the restroom too where my foot with the medical boot was sliding around. If you or someone in your party can't climb up or down the stairs, I wouldn't recommend this place. read more

Wish I tried this place sooner - best table bread and butter I have EVER TRIED! no exaggeration. Came here on the last day of restaurant week per recommendation from my sister, and tried a number of dishes. Aside from the delicious tableside bread, we tried the grilled octopus and escargot for appetizers. Both were great, very heavy handed with the flavors though. I love the pistachios as part of the escargot. And hefty portion of tender octopus as well - very worth it! The mains were not as impressive, as we ordered the pork schnitzel and filet medallions. Both were decent, but the bed of veggies the schnitzel sat on felt like frozen bagged veggies. And the filets were over salted. We also ordered a side of fried artichoke hearts, which came with a delicious garlic aioli. For dessert, we got the red velvet cake, but it was nothing special. It's been a few years since I've dined here, but it remains a solid French spot in Arlington. Loved the free bread and butter to start off! For an appetizer, I tried the steak tartare, and honestly I enjoyed the salad portion of it the most. I found the steak tartare to not be as finely minced or as well-seasoned as I would prefer, but the combination of the salad, chips, gherkins, dijon mustard ,and the steak tartare made for a well-rounded dish. For my entree, I got the salmon which was fantastic. The skin was crisped up nicely and the buttery salmon paired well with the lentils, butternut squash, and buttery sauce. I think it was supposed to be a lemon-y sauce, which would have been nice to cut through the richness of the dish, but I didn't really taste any citrus notes. As much as I hate to give bad reviews, this one is not going to be a good one. I was here last Saturday and we ordered three desserts and coffee, just for an afternoon snack. We wanted to try those three desserts and just do a sort of tasting, because we often have fun with it. As you can see in the pictures, they didn't look bad, and it seemed like a lot of effort was put on the preparation. However what I appreciate in a dessert is the flavor, and these were really bad. Not only did they taste like those packages you can easily find in a supermarket and prepare at home (contrary to any hope that they'd be freshly made in the kitchen), we also felt heaviness and cramps in the stomach for the rest of the day, after eating them. We haven't tried any other food, so I won't speak for the rest of the menu. But if you can, order dessert somewhere else, when you're done. I came here with five others for dinner this past Friday evening. I'd highly recommend making a reservation at least a few days in advance - we made one 3-4 days before and even then, we didn't have the option to select the 6:30 timeframe we wanted (6:45 was the next) and we only had the option to sit at a high-top. We had Father's Day brunch here. It was a nice gesture to receive a free cookie from Northside Social at the end. They also had a few dishes for their Father's Day specials. There are four kid's menu options, and the kid's portions are ample. Our server was great, and I never felt like we needed to find her. The food also came out quickly. The croissants and granola are made in house. My latte had latte art which was a very nice touch. The yogurt and granola bowl portion was a full serving and not small compared to other restaurants were it's more like a tasting. I would have liked less honey on it, but that's okay. The ambiance is like a daytime dive bar. Lighting was the most dim on their top floor, so it felt sad sitting there, but if you have great company, it makes up for it. The floors and tables were sticky. The bathroom was satisfactory, but I think overall, the whole restaurant could use a deep cleaning or a refresh. I would suggest for better texture that the eggs benedict be served on a toasted English muffin so that you have the soft poached egg and hollandaise sauce on something hard or crispy. The benedict on a croissant is novel, but I think soft on soft doesn't work for me, and the hollandaise sauce would make the croissant soggy. We ordered the fried calamari from the Father's Day special. The calamari made up about 35% of the dish, and the rest was mostly some type of pepper, onion, fried lemon slice, or just fried batter. I think a better name for this dish would be fried onions/vegetables with calamari instead of just "fried calamari." Lyon Hall is a neighborhood gem! It is easy to get reservations here, same day or the day before. Parking is street parking. I especially love coming here for brunch. I've been here twice for a brunch and it was wonderful each time. There is ample seating, and the ambiance is that of a French cafe. There is a wide variety of items on the brunch menu, and items are fairly priced. Everything is a good portion size and delicious. I especially love the croque madame, chicken sandwich, and eggs benedict. I dined here yesterday with a group of seven and we were talking for nearly 3 hours and the restaurant had no issue with it, which was nice. Wait staff is courteous. The noise level is just right. We came in and sat at the bar for some drinks and appetizers. Both service and food were perfect! However, I'm wondering why people think that young children should ever be at a busy bar. While we were enjoying our night, a couple of ladies sat down (at he busy bar) with 2 children. I think VA needs a law like CA that doesn't allow young ones at a bar. They didn't watch their children at all and they were all over the place! The kids were standing in their seat and climbing all over the place.
