Pure Smiles was the only office that was able to accommodate me during the same week, and they were upfront about their costs and time of procedure. I was seen within 5 minutes of checking in, and I was impressed with the level of service I received from everyone from the front desk to the orthodontist. The orthodontic assistant was kind. She told me what she was doing at every step of the way. She also gave me a way to signal if I was in pain (which I wasn't - she was gentle!) Dr. Neker Bernuy upon reviews and initial visit seemed like an experienced and amazing…read moreorthodontist. However, my first red flag was an issue with the financial / billing staff. The representative did not verify proper insurance benefits, protocols, and procedures - prior to my initial consultation. When a doctor is in network with an insurance company they are bound by the laws of that carrier and cannot charge whatever they feel the treatment cost should be. Dr. Bernuy was trying to charge a certain amount to conduct my orthodontic treatment. However, the insurance company stated there were maximums and limits for treatment care cost for traditional metal braces. We worked through this issue after I made the call to the insurance company in their presence. I continued with care in spite of this issue of trying to overcharge for treatment, this is a lesson learned. As treatment went on the quality of care seemed very poor. The Orthodontic Assistants did not seem trained and proficient at their jobs, some barely spoke English, the staff seemed ever changing and limited at times. When I brought this issue to the doctor's attention and requested that only he conduct my adjustments. He whispered in a low voice, "I am not about to do all this work." I am not sure if he knew his voice was audible to me as I was laid back in the chair with my ear next to his mouth. This was disrespectful and unprofessional. In shock and surprise, I thought to myself well hire properly trained and diverse staff. I did not allow him push off his untrained staff on my complicated case. I waited patiently for his personal adjustment, no matter the wait time. The final straw was after a year of treatment my crossbite issue had not improved and there a space that was taking over 6 months to close. Typically, space is the easiest thing to change during orthodontic care. When I asked for changes earlier in treatment he said no without explanation. Thus, I was left feeling like I had no say so in my own care and treatment. Furthermore, normal adjustment timeline for orthodontic treatment is every 6 weeks. However, I was seeing Dr. Bernuy every 4 weeks whereby he could bill and milk my insurance on a monthly basis while dragging out care. With this more aggressive treatment schedule, movements and changes should have been more visible. But there was limited or no changes in oral care. Dr. Bernuy seemed like he was flying by the seat of his pants and did not have a real timeline and plan of action. Managing 2 offices and poorly trained staff, he did not invest in the special care and needs of his patient, just doing the same basic drills on patients no matter the difficulty of the case. I wrote a lengthy email explaining to the doctor, I wanted to go with another plan of action such as adding buttons, elastics, or stronger wires due to the fact the current care and treatment plan was not working. During my next visit he suggested trying an Expander. He stated that there would be an additional cost for the Expander and that I needed to see the financial specialist. When the representative pulled up my contract, this appliance was already included in my contract. Thus, again this doctor trying to overcharge for care. I continued with care because the appliance was not an additional fee and I had paid the patient responsibility portion in advance. I did not know much about this appliance so when doing my research I found that it would open my upper arch within a 3-6 week period of time, which sounded great since we have been working this issue for over a year. I was ready for a change and would try anything different than the current plan of action which was not working. The Expander did not move my upper arch and the appliance burrowed into the skin on the roof of my mouth causing inflammation, swollen tissue, and a sore the size of a quarter. When this happened, I immediately began searching for a new orthodontist to finalize my care. Based on guidance from my new orthodontist, he never utilizes Expanders on Adult patients as the window for expansion is lost around puberty with an Expander. However, when getting the appliance removed Dr. Bernuy assured me this happens to a lot of his children patients. When getting the opinion of my new orthodontist he stated he has never had the issue of inflammation, swelling of tissue, and sores with the Expanders he utilizes on any of his patients. My new orthodontist utilizes a more modern Expander. For this reason, harming children with outdated equipment I wanted to warn other potential patients to be leery of Dr. Bernuy and his practice. Currently, I am under the care of a new orthodontist he added a heavy double traction wire and an additional set of power chains. The space between my upper molar and incisors has closed after 2 weeks and my upper jaw crossbite has begun to open.

Kiddo was SO sad, so I took a chance and called to ask if we could come pick up a replacement. Celeste was instantly full of empathy! She understood the importance of the balloon, and didn't hesitate to make a new one! What a huge relief it was! When I arrived and needed help with other services, she was so helpful, communicated clearly and was just a blast to talk to. And her coworker (should have gotten her name) was so fun, chatty, and helpful too. It made a stressful situation so much easier to handle.

Dr. Hoang spent time with us, explained treatment, and made us feel genuinely cared for. We even continued driving from Buda after we moved because we trusted the practice. Unfortunately, over the years, that changed. Every visit began to feel more like an assembly line than personalized healthcare. My children have always had difficult teeth, and while I understand treatment recommendations can vary between dentists, I increasingly felt judged rather than supported. We also consistently felt overtreated, and the bedside manner often left my children in tears after appointments. No child should leave a dental office feeling ashamed. The doctor even judged me for holding my toddler one time she said something like "you're too big to be held" Excuse me.?! I know you have your own children and you are probably the most perfect mom but no need to judge other moms. The biggest turning point was with my oldest daughter. We were told she needed a crown and were essentially told she should transition out of the practice because of the complexity of her dental needs. I sought a second opinion from a dentist in Buda. Their recommendation was completely different: no crown, just more frequent cleanings and sealants. She's doing great. This wasn't the first time I'd needed a second opinion. Several years ago, another extensive treatment plan was presented for Jaidyn. At the time, my father, who was a dentist, examined her and strongly disagreed with the proposed treatment. I requested a meeting with Dr. Hoang, and after reevaluating her herself, she recommended a much simpler treatment plan. That experience stayed with me. The problems weren't limited to treatment recommendations. Communication and scheduling became increasingly frustrating. One visit ended with my daughter Jovan leaving without her next orthodontic appointment being scheduled. I was the one who discovered it, called the office, and was initially told we'd have to wait another month. Thankfully Lisa stepped in and got her scheduled sooner, but it was another preventable mistake. There were other examples too. I once drove all the way to the office to pick up a retainer, only to find out it hadn't even arrived. I had to make another trip because no one had contacted me beforehand. Again, Lisa helped smooth things over, but these communication breakdowns became a pattern. What has disappointed me even more than the treatment differences is the complete lack of communication and compassion. Months ago, I expressed my concerns and requested a call from Dr. Hoang. That call never came. At my most recent visit, I again shared how hurt I was by our previous experience. No apology. No acknowledgment. I even had to point out that no one had simply said, "I'm sorry you've had this experience." Then came my youngest daughter's cleaning. I was quoted more than $200 out of pocket. At no point did anyone ask whether I had secondary dental insurance or thoroughly review my benefits. Had someone simply asked, I could have provided my additional insurance information, and my daughter would have been fully covered. Instead, I walked out and canceled every future dental appointment. Ironically, I later learned from another dental office that not only was my daughter fully covered under my secondary policy, but even without insurance their out-of-pocket cost would have been almost half of what I was quoted at Petite Dental. When I asked why no one had followed up with me, I was told the office had tried to contact me. I have plenty of appointment reminder texts, but I have no emails and no meaningful communication from the financial team regarding my concerns or insurance. That was another missed opportunity. After 14 years, all I wanted was accountability, compassion, and one simple phone call from the doctor. It never happened. I'm grateful we've found a new dental home where my children feel welcomed instead of judged. We'll finish our orthodontic contract because we've already committed to it, but I can no longer recommend the dental side of this practice. Fourteen years is a long time to stay loyal to a practice. I never expected perfection. I simply expected to be treated like a person instead of a number.

I scheduled an appointment months out for me and my son, and they called shortly before his appointment to let us know that he would not be covered, despite the fact that the health care provider's website said that they were in network and the receptionist stated that they took that provider's PPO insurance when I made the appointment. I asked Main Street Dental to please check to see whether MY health insurance (a different provider) was in network and whether everything would be covered for MY appointment for later that month. They stated that they normally only call right before the appointment. I explained that we didn't want to wait until right before the appointment to find out whether there were hidden fees/out of network issues/etc. They stated they would call and check, and then they actually DID call me back to say yes, my insurance was in network, and everything should be covered. Fast-forward to my appointment! UH-OH! Turns out this place requires panoramic X-rays, which my insurance doesn't cover, so they're just calling right before my appointment to let me know that will be an extra surprise fee! Why couldn't they have checked that when they called about my insurance the first time? HMMM.... Even MORE incredibly, the receptionist stated that they were required BY LAW to take panoramic X-rays. I actually am a lawyer, but I don't think you need to have gone to law school to know that there's NO law requiring people to take panoramic X-rays before receiving dental treatment. Call almost any other dental office in the area and ask. Steer clear of Main Street Dental. There are other new dental offices in the area who would love your business and won't hit you with surprises 24-48 hours before your appointment, after you've already waited 4 months to see a dentist. They also probably won't lie and tell you a medical procedure is required "by law" when it is not.
