I see the Dentist that runs the Pacific Beach Location is in the comments doing what she does best. I had one visit with this Location and that was a pretty good experience until the follow-up. Full transparency especially with the prices that they are charging is all I needed to continue with services here. I came in on a Thursday with tooth pain from multiple teeth-- they took xrays and did a cleaning-- I mean thanks for the cleaning but my toothpain is what I needed to be dealt with. Not a big deal, since my insurance covered it-- was told I was going to be given some meds for pain and go over the treatment plan. Brought me out to the lobby and scheduled me for another visit-- All be it that prescriptions are electronic these days-- thought okay, they'll send it over to CVS and I'll get an alert from them. Nope nothing was sent, tried to see if I can call them but-- come to find out they were closed on Friday and the weekend. I went through the whole weekend trying to subdue the pain. Came in on time Monday morning and was met with the great ladies upfront-- told them about not receiving meds and they apologize and looked into it. The reply was you could've text us-- nice to know, you could've told me that. Okay, now I'm getting a little upset. I honestly didn't know why I was seeing another person-- maybe to go over my treatment plan-- yeah well Dr. Jamma went through the xrays and notes that Ms. Chan had done and said that she was agreed with the plan-- Now reading all the reviews here it seems like Dr. Jamma needs to learn how to communicate better and listen to what the patients are asking for. They seem to communicate here with silence and looks-- which through me for a loop. I asked for the full breakdown of costs for all that needed to be done, truth be told, it was quite a few things I need to get done--which I went in knowing-- but instead of gathering the information I requested for, they decided that they were only going to give me what they thought I needed to see and decided to tell me what I was gonna choose to do-- After several attempts to try to have Dr. Jamma listen to my concerns-- she dismissed me several times and I checked out-- I walked out of the exam room and Dr Jamma and her assistant decided to follow me out to the lobby still running her mouth about my finances-- in the lobby-- I was livid at this point-- I told the front desk to bill me for whatever I owed at this visit and walked out. I should've read all the reviews and seen all the comments from Dr Jamma and would've never came here. Dr Jamma-- You can say you have experience for 50 years in this industry and I still won't care. That doesn't matter if you sit there and dismiss your patients and try to actively fight them on matters that they don't understand and was not thoroughly explained from the beginning-- All I requested for was breakdown in costs--FULL TRANSPARENCY, but was met with be-foolery-- other procedures that needed to be done but wasn't told I needed-- being pushed for a payment plan option-- I'll be contacting your office for a copy of my xray's and the full report of what procedures you think I need done. Everyone at the office is friendly but the quality of work and upsell attempts are bad: - 3 of the fillings they did less than a year ago now have to be redone - routine cleaning was not thorough and left plaque/tartar in between my teeth. To their credit they fixed those on a follow up visit when I brought it to their attention - sent pre authorization request to my insurance for Invisalign coverage even though I did not request and do not want Invisalign - told me my wisdom teeth needed to be removed and tried to schedule me to remove them the next day. I told them my parents were visiting from across the country, and they said that's great bc they can pick me up -- not exactly what my parents want to do on their vacation. My current dentist says if my wisdom teeth are not bothering and are not coming out (they're behind the gumline) then no need for removal - offered $300 test to check position of wisdom teeth with $100 discount only if I did it immediately in the same visit. Hated this upsell tactic but it worked bc I did the scan. Left me with a very bad impression of this practice, especially since it turns out I don't actually need to have these teeth removed After the experience earlier this year, I requested my records and to terminate my status as a patient. The manager reached out and we had a nice conversation so I didn't leave a review at the time, giving them the benefit of the doubt. When I learned yesterday the fillings they did were poor quality and need to be replaced, I was not surprised at all. read more

I went in for the first time to get a checkup/cleaning, and was told I needed 4 new crowns. I decided to move forward with getting the 1st one, and the experience was absolutely terrible. First - when I went in to get the temporary crown, they packed a cord around my tooth, into the gums. This is normal. What isn't normal is them leaving it in there. I was in a lot of pain after the visit and into the next morning. I finally took a closer look in the mirror and the cord was still packed into my gums. I removed it and the pain subsided. I came back to get the permanent crown a couple weeks later. After leaving my appointment and the numbness going away, I noticed my bite was off, and I was in excrutiating pain if anything touched the right side of my mouth (food, liquids, etc.) I reached out and they told me it was normal and I should wait a couple of weeks. I waited a week, but was in so much pain that I reached out to schedule an appointment to get my bite fixed. They worked on it, and grinded my teeth a bit, but it was still off and hurting like crazy after I left. I went back in the next day, and a different doc worked on me. She just made things worse - grinded down probably 8 of my teeth trying to fix the bite. After that, the bite felt completely off. I made an appoointment with another dentist to see if they could correct it, and also get a second opion on the other 3 crowns Singing Hills told me I needed. My new dentist found the crown to be too short, which had caused the bite to be off. She suggested waiting for the teeth to try and settle a bit before doing anymore work, but I may have to replace that crown. On top of that, she said I didn't even need the other crowns. Singing Hills was just trying to get more money from unnecessary work. What a scam. My teeth have settled a bit but my bite is still off and I still have sensitivity to hot/cold. DO NOT LET THESE PEOPLE TOUCH YOU. read more

Updated: The below review was originally posted on June 5th, but taken down after having a nice conversation with Dr Jamma. I was surprised to come to such an equitable resolution; at the end of which I even agreed to return to the El Cajon office and give them one more try. Enter the old adage of fool me once... when I called to follow up on the resolution a month later was told my memory of the agreed path forward is incorrect. So, I've been fooled twice now... shame on me. From my experience over the last 6 months - I'd think twice about trusting your face, mouth and wellbeing with this organization - especially if you suffer from extreme dental anxiety and painful TMJ. Note: my account is paid in full. I have asked for nothing "for free" as the response from the business owner suggests. ----- Original Review: No longer your friendly neighborhood dentist. I've gone to this location for all my dentistry needs for the last 20 years. It's a shame the new owners have taken over the reviews of the past owner; my 2 experiences in this office under the new management were anything but amazing. I actually left in tears on both occasions due to conflicting information regarding coverage and cost as well as multiple threats from their front desk staff about an outstanding balance that had not been brought to my attention until after additional services had been provided. PRIOR TO YOUR VISIT - Make sure to confirm your insurance, services scheduled, out of pocket cost and anything else you'd expect the office to communicate with you. Do NOT come to this horrible place if you are even the tiniest bit scared of the dentist. I was 15 minutes early to my appointment. I have a fear of needles and when she asked me to open my mouth to inject the needle I said I needed a second to prepare. Instead of being kind and comforting, she immediately stormed out of the room and refused to work on me. Then the receptionist tells me she has asked me to find another dentist. I cannot believe the level of unprofessional and rude behavior from a health care worker and I will be reporting her to the American Dental Association. read more

I love this dentist. Don't get me wrong I hate the dentist and the pain associated with the profession but this dentist is special. I had an emergency and called their office around 4:30 PM. They were able to get me in at 10 o'clock the next morning and I was at work at 2 . Her and her entire staff are kind and caring. This is important to me because I am scared to death of the dentist. I have had an irrational fear of dentists since childhood but felt so comfortable with Dr Simerlein. She saw me the same day for a semi-urgent issue, and was incredibly helpful and patient. Dr. Simerlein and her team are absolute professionals in their technical as well as in their personal ability's fields! They are magnificent and we have been their clients for 20 years now. I see only one bad review and it has to be a fake, it is so ridiculous and poorly written. Please only look at the overall 5 star ratings. Those are true. I am from Germany and I know I had a wonderful dentist for many years who also took much pride in his work. Dr. Simerlein saw that right away when I first met her and she examined old fillings etc. and she is the same way. She stands for fantastic work. So does her whole team. Big plus: They truly take away fear as well. All are calm, yet of positive energy. I have never had less fear in the dentist chair. read more

This dentist talked me into getting an unnecessary and painful crown that now has caused a cavity to form as a result of the crown being placed too close to another tooth. On my first visit, she constructed a schedule for me in which she would replace every filling in my mouth (several) with these crowns because she said it had to be done. Then she wanted to file down my canines and do whitening procedures to improve the appearance of my teeth. The cost of all of this unrequested work was going to be in the thousands. I've since seen another dentist who informed me that my teeth looked great, there was no need for any further crowns (nor probably even the one the Simerlein had installed) and that the crown I had been given by Simerlein had caused me to need to get a filling. Simerlein concocted a money-making dental scheme to take advantage of a patient who would not know any better and then screwed up the very first step. On top of it all, after having gone to her for cleanings, xrays and the several steps of the crown, they charged me $50 when I had to cancel an appointment, which I had done courteously as soon as I was able, long before the actual appointment. Stay away from her office. It will cost you in more ways than one. read more

First off, I have to say, Office Manager Kathi is a big reason this review is 5 stars. I recently moved to San Diego from Las Vegas and my previous dentist office had an office manager that was nearly impossible to deal with. Therefore, Kathi is SO REFRESHING! She is helpful, kind, and her overall demeanor is sunny and positive! I guarantee just talking to her on the phone will make you smile! Dental Assistant Patrice and Dr. Simerlein were also accommodating and Dr. S was able to give me some tips about my chronic TMJ. The teeth cleaning was short & sweet! I always book out at least 2 hours for dentists visits, but this office is QUICK and it is great to have going to the dentist not feel like such a task. Thank you for the wonderful experience! Even if the rest of the staff was eh, I would still go here just cuz of her. Then there's crystal, the super nice assistant who was very friendly and helpful. I love Dr. Simerlein and her staff! When I first moved to San Diego, in 2001, I needed to find a dentist, doctor, etc. Out of the huge list of dentists I was given, I picked Dr. Simerlein randomly, and couldn't be happier. Kathy(the receptionist) has always been so incredibly sweet, and Dr. Simerlein has always done a fabulous job with my teeth. Even when I needed a referral to have my wisdom teeth removed, the doctor I was referred to was amazing. In 2009, my husband and I had to move to NorCal, but I will literally drive the 9 hours twice a year to get my checkups with Dr. Simerlein (no joke!). It's hard to find a good dentist, so when you find one you just have to stick with them. We're about to move to Washington State, and I'm sad to say I'll probably (yes, probably) have to stop seeing Dr. Simerlein. If I can, I'll try to schedule our visits home to coincide with my cleanings... Hopefully it works out. read more

When I called as a new client I had SO many questions. Kathy was very patient with me and answered every single one. Patrice is so funny, personable and makes getting x-rays fun. OK, I confess...I am a lifelong dental phobic. Though a retired Marine, going to a dentist is the most terrifying thing in my life. If I like a dentist, it is truly amazing. I have been going to Dr. Simerlein for several years, and she is the exception to my prior dental experience. Though white knuckled and with a death grip on the arms when I first sin in the chair, I quickly relax under her gentle touch and empathy. She is very thorough and focused on prevention, NOT up selling. On my last visit, she discovered a pre-cancerous lesion under my tongue, and referred me to a surgeon so I was able to have it removed before it became cancer. I started going to Dr. Simerlein when my dentist moved & the new dentist informed me that I had a bunch of stuff wrong with my teeth. I thought that was odd because my former dentist never said that. I wanted a second opinion. Dr. Simerlein was very honest. She informed me that my teeth were in perfect shape & I didn't need anything!! I have been going to her ever since. Patrice, he assistant is so gentle that she puts me to sleep. Dr. S makes going to the dentist fun! She is honest, gives advice & does a thorough job. Her front desk gal, Cathy, is awesome. I've been going here for almost 4 years, and Dr Simerlein and the whole crew are excellent. I've had multiple fillings, cleanings, and a night guard made here with no issues at all. I'm always asking questions about what is being done and how things look, and all are patiently answered! Kathi up front is very knowledgeable about insurance and it's a breeze to make an appointment. I am covered by two insurances and she makes it so easy to make sure both are used.
