Disgusted by this place. My husband bought me a $500 gift card right before I got pregnant with our second and they couldn't even pull it up. Also got bitched out by the "manager" aka Elijah the OWNER to the point where I almost pulled up to confront them. Told the initial person on the phone my husband had passed weeks before and I just wanted info about the $500 certificate he purchased because his phone is detained still after passing. I got cussed out, told to "go fuck my self" and "fuck your husband". As soon as I get the verification from his phone I'll be there! Be ready. Cussing your customers out on the phone is a real business move ain't it? Afterwards, posting about him you'd be surprised all the people with sexual allegations against him. Insane. Don't go here it's not safe and it's far from professional. What a total loss. Then was blown up by the receptionist through Facebook STILL in denial that it was even their studio. I've been getting tattooed by various shops and artists from coast to coast for the last 25 years. In fact, I've even been on the TLC show Miami Ink to get my largest piece to date. Needless to stay I speak from experience and have had some really good experiences and some not so good with the shops I've visited. Long story short, this is hands down the BEST tattoo shop in which I've ever received ink. They are extremely friendly, laid back, and still incredibly professional. Recently I was on a mission to get a badly needed cover-up (ex-wife's name) and after trying almost every shop in the Charlotte area, I found Sink or Swim. The other shops were blowing me off with excuses like they're weeks out on cover-ups or they're totally booked for months. Bottom line is that most shops are scared to do a cover-up. This shop specializes in this area. Let's start with Blake who manages the shop. He took my call and patiently listened to me rant and rave about the other shops in the area that were causing me grief. Although they themselves are booked well into May and June, he immediately began to tell Elijah my situation and asked me to come in that evening to talk with him. He was straight with me, completely professional, and extremely helpful. I got a sense from our conversation that he really cared about making sure I was treated fairly and with respect. I arrived about 30 minutes after speaking with Blake and immediately felt at home. The shop is incredibly clean and comfortable. I really dig the old school nautical theme of the shop and all of the art on their walls is really cool. Blake chats with me for a minute or two and then lets Elijah know that I had arrived. Elijah comes right out to meet me and we begin discussing options on the cover-up. After talking through several options we both decide that a Japanese Koi with a Peony or two is the way to go. He promptly goes to work on tracing my existing ink and then he asks me to hang tight for a bit while he draws something up. At this point, I have a really great vibe about this place and I'm starting to get really stoked about how excited and interested that Elijah is about tackling this work. Fortunately he had a couple of cancellations so I didn't have to wait any longer than it took him to sketch up the artwork. He's a bit of a perfectionist so he came out several times to try out positioning of the artwork and to make minor adjustments. Three hours later I have the start of a killer tattoo. Elijah knocked out a first pass at covering up a heavily saturated piece with a striking blue Peony and finished the outline of the koi including some shading. It was thoughtful of him to take the extra time to color in the major cover-up work. I'll be back in a month to finish out the best work I've had applied to my body ever. I'm all about setting the right expectation and this is one of Sink or Swim's greatest strengths. The camaraderie and collaboration between the artists while they were each independently giving tattoos is impressive. If you are looking for a great tattoo new or a cover-up, please give Blake a call. They may be booked out a month or two but they have the best shop and artists in Charlotte so it's worth the wait. Very poor customer service and VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. I paid a deposit for a tattoo and asked to see a drawing. When given the first draft I tried to tell the artist (Elijah Blackwell) what I liked and didn't like about the drawing...here's what he said to me: HIM: "So u will redraw it with what you are telling me you want ....and only so much will. Fit on your arm .... if I have to I will just wait till you get to my studio to draw it ....Which most likely will be the next step....." ME: "We can wait until we are there if that is what you think will be best!" (obvsiously I didn't yet understand that he is actually telling me to draw my own tattoo) HIM: "That tesla is not a problem I can put it together in no more that 30 minutes... if I have time I will have another one ready before but I have 6 appts. Today and 4 tomorrow. .. so I doubt it ...I also need to get melissa ready but honestly I'm pretty over getting people's drawing ready for them cause I always end up tattooing it on someone else ... see you soon" (Why is he complaining to a customer that he doesn't have time to do the work he was paid for? It says it takes him thirty minutes but he can't seem to find the time?!?) So now he is tattooing my first draft on another person (the draft I PAID for). It was a FIRST DRAFT...of course I am going to ask for changes...it's going to be on my body forever! He also blasted over his facebook how this tattoo free game because the customer now wants to design their own tattoo. You guys take what you want from that... So if you prefer getting tattooed by drama queen artist that require you to stroke their ego before they do the work you paid for, then I definitely recommend Sink or Swim. read more

I have quite a few tattoos and for the most part they are from one friend who I trusted back in Texas and its been hard trying to find another artist I trust. Being a self professed ink connoisseur, I am still pretty intimidated to walk into a tattoo shop. My sister was in town visiting and we wanted to get a small matching tattoo. I had seen this place a few times whilst dining at Stacks, and we thought we'd give it a try. This place is so awesome. The staff is really friendly (which I personally find to be a rarity for a tattoo shop) and the tattoo artist was friendly, engaged in the forming and location of the tattoo and was very straight forward with the pricing. The vibe was very chill and it was welcoming. And don't let me forget the art. Their art is art! There was another guy getting tatted and the piece was so nice and the two artists were helping each other out with placement and the like.
