Also happens to be the the MBL Opening Day; the surrounding streets were already buzzing. Had I not been in a rush, I would have sat in one of the comfy-looking couches and relax a bit. The guy upfront warmly welcomed me. As I stated already, a doppio (my usual) and a sweet pastry (Hibiscus Ginger croissant) were what I picked. The price of doppio was a bit high at $6 and yet in exchange for a good service along with the exquisitely modern decor and ambiance, what I paid for the two items simply justified. A little information placed on each table says that you can rent the space for a private event. What a quaint place I got to know today! This place also serves alcohol. Located in the Arts District of the Santa Fe neighborhood, ESP HiFi is walk in only, so arriving early is a good idea since it fills up quickly. The menu includes seasonal cocktails, highballs, natural wine, warm drinks, non alcoholic options, and small bites, with tastings focused on Japanese whiskey and mezcal. I had a walnut mezcal based cocktail, and ordered olives and Marcona almonds as a snack, all of which fit the vibe perfectly. They also offer a daily happy hour or "social hour" from 4 to 5pm. We went during a Candy Land night. There were brightly colored decorations everywhere and the place smelled like fruit loops thanks to a scratch and sniff wall. We ordered something made with liquid nitrogen and I 10/10 recommend. It's served on a plate and comes out with a consistency that's somewhere in the middle of a drink and ice cream. When I visited, it was a Candy Land theme, so all the drinks were candy themed. Candy and sweet are not my thing, but that's not why I visited this time around. However, I would've been more interested in the 80's theme they had previously, and am interested to see what they come up with next. This time around, I went for their summer spotlight series, which is where a different bartender offers a cocktail theme along with food pairings. I attended the first of the series, with the program manager, Paul Webb, and the theme was "The Art of Escape." I'm sharing my menu so you can see what the staff is capable of. Even if you don't go to one of their tasting menus, they have talent. Destination Nostalgia: cocktail had whiskey, clarified Granny Smith apples, wildflower honey, pineapple weed hydrosol, agua de pierda, river stone paired with peanture butter brittle with Japanese mile bread, black berry glee, and picked Serrano (this was my favorite dish and so surprisingly delicious). Destination Adventure: 400 conejos espadín, appelton estate, cardamom infused ancho reyes verde, clarified sea buckthorn, soursop, boab cordial paired with pickled pear, toasted Caribbean jerk, and ancho Destination Romance: Ferrand cognac 1840, clarified raspberry pineapple tepche, warm vanilla pineapple foam, raspberry rose caviar. Paired with chocolate pollo mole and peppered strawberry. Destination Celebration: Aspen vodka, Grand Marnier, gewurtraminer, lychee, sakura air. Paired with wild caught ahi and ossestra caviar. Destination Solitude: Boodles gin, calamansi, custom coastal tea blend, spirulina, coastal air. Paired with fried grouper with candied orange and crema. Destination Hope: Bullet bourbon, toasted oat, banana, angostura, vanilla cream Anyway . . . it was a fun and creative evening. As far as the company: I stumbled upon this tasting by accident. I emailed the owners to ensure they would be open on a Sunday I wanted to visit. They emailed back and said they were having a special summer tasting series as opposed to regular service. So I bought a ticket. While everyone there were friends of the owners and bartender and industry professionals, they were alls super welcoming and accommodating. They also sell most of the beer they are pouring in cans incase you'd liek to take some home and enjoy it later. I am generally in here on Tuesday or Thursday nights early in the evening, at this time of the week it has a casual neighborhood vibe is not too busy. Ephemeral has great wifi, the service s prompt an knowledgeable. My typical visit is for about a 90 minutes while I catch up on work and have a beer or two in the process. If you are looking for a place for a relaxing beer or coffee with a friend or if like me you have to kill time while your kids are at a sports practice, this is a great option.
