We have here for 18 years when we camp across the street. Today I walked over with my friend to get snacks. They had a a sign at the front in large letters 50% off ice cream so we bought ice cream. Only to find that it was bad. It had defrosted and they re-froze it! It was horrible. I called to complain and the person who I talked to said that is why it was 50% off and it was not returnable. I said rather than you writing off the loss for a freezer defect you sold bad ice cream to customers and he hung up on me. After 18 years... this is my last visit to Pokerville Market. This is horrible that they let the ice cream defrost and re-freeze and sell it! Who does this!!! read more

Nice little grocery store in the heart of Amador wine country. They have an extensive array of pretty much everything you'd expect from a market even though it's way out in the Sierra foothills. Shelves are well-stocked. If you're out visiting in the area and forgot something necessary, chances are that you will be able to find it, here. There are a variety of gourmet picnic supplies if you want lunch in Amador to go with your winery bottle purchases. Or, if you have local favoy, this store stocks a lot of local wines. I just made a wonderful discovery. Pokerville Market is not just an all-around fabulous grocery store. They've got an incredible deli, too. I'm glad to know they keep surprising me! I'd never considered them as a deli option, in part because it's not really advertised. I guess the better places are harder to find. The lady behind the counter made us up some fantastic sandwiches. Not wishing anything fancy, I went with a classic turkey and swiss with all the toppings on sourdough. The perfect mix of flavor and texture; the perfect balance of ingredients. Throw in some chips from a couple aisles down and you have one of the better sandwiches I've come across in Amador County. Now I have yet another reason to stop in to this small-town, locally-owned establishment went I'm in the area. read more

Horrible experience. Ordered a pizza. Waited half an hour for it to bake and picked it up and had great service. Left a $10 tip for a $20 pizza. Received a call half an hour later from them but couldn't talk because bad cell service. Tried to call them but couldn't get through. Realized then that we genuinely forgot to pay for the pizza. I think I was so happy to leave them a tip and she didn't mention payment and we left not realizing. Planned to go back the next day as we had settled in already. Then I get a threatening text and then a threatening voicemail!!! Seriously??? And the icing on the cake? They gave us the wrong pizza which had meat so my husband couldn't even eat it!!! I have lived in the area since I was 5 which is one year after they opened in 1984. I remember going there shopping with my family and now I shop there for my family. They have specialty cheeses, pizza, (take and bake and hot and ready) an amazing delicious with the worlds best deli sandwiches, a spectacular array of local Shenandoah wines and THE best meat counter in the entire county. The meat prices alone are worth going. For everyday groceries they are a bit on the pricey side for my family, however I will skip buying meat elsewhere and go to Pokerville for their meat counter. This market doesn't always have the lowest prices but it has what you need, and there is a clearance section near the front where you can get some good deals. The pizza is pretty good here and makes a great snack while out walking. I like the combo a lot and they often have pepperoni by the slice. You can finds lots of varieties of local honey like pine ,blueberryand wildflower,among many others.Great place to find wine for your meal as well. At the deli there are some good salads like the Greek salad,and the bakery has interesting items like Nanaimo bars. They didnt have turnips last time we were there.Good one stop shop. read more

I wanted to like them. A pretty nice store for this size town. Nice deli area that serves pizza by th slice (a rarity). I wish I had ordered pizza. I ordered a roast beef sandwich on a Dutch crunch roll. This roll was so tasteless it ruined the whole thing. I am amazed they even serve it! Although I could see the roast beef and the cheese, I could taste neither. All I could taste was very poor bread, Mayo and mustard. Very disappointing. read more

WOW, I am very surprised at the bad reviews here!!! I have been coming to Pokerville Market whenever we stay at the 49er RV park across the street since 2006. From their Pizza, sandwiches, Deli and butchers counter to their wine selections and decent prices I love this store!! I have never had anyone working there be rude in fact quite the opposite! I needed to pick up a few items and decided to stop at the Pokerville Market. It really didn't look like much from outside, once I walked in I was pleasantly surprised. The place kind of opens up inside and is much larger than it appears outside. They have a very wide variety of items. Additionally the place had a deli/bakery and pizza by the slice, chicken and other items cooked and ready to eat. Besides the items I needed I decided to have a sandwich, which was really good. Quality meats and very fresh breads. Would definitely stop here again when in the area. read more

This is a great stop on your way to Amador Wine Country for some picnic items or a quick snack. Over the years, Pokerville has increased their selection of natural and organic foods and added more gourmet deli items. They are a full service supermarket with everything you need for the cabin or camping trip too. Their location is also very convenient right on 49 just south of downtown. I really appreciate their massive selection of local wines; you may even be tempted to just grab some unique bottles here and head home! This is not Nugget or Whole Foods, and the building is old. Pokerville market. Is the best unfriendliest market in the area. Don't expect the checker to say hello to you when you walk up to the check out. You May not even received a thank you on your way out. As you are in line you'll hear other check stands with the same attitude with most customers. frustration, Snideness. I know retail sucks, but with the lack of stores in the area, pokerville can get away with this screw You attitude . I'll still go there when I need something out of convenience. This is just an observation.The food is overpriced like most specialty stores that have the food market all their own. This sandwich shop inside the Pokerville Market continues it's spiral down. After explaining to the new person behind the counter. How disappointing the last sandwich I bought there. She makes one worse. One slice of roast beef, two slices of cheese and a piece of lettuce. Screw it not worth returning as I had already met with owner. 13 years I've been going there. GREAT little Grocery Store!! The Butcher Counter is what impressed me the most! True Old School, Cut by hand meats!! I was in town for an event at the Fairgrounds and stopped in on Friday to grab ice, etc and had to come back on Sunday to pick up some of the beautiful steaks and roasts to take back home. Cooked the flank steak for dinner .. OMG!! Tender and flavorful with minimal seasoning (literally salt, pepper n garlic). I will make the 45 minute drive again just for this grocery store! read more

Finally decided to quench my craving for a salami sandwich and it was right on the money. I was really happy to also find the local wines in stock!!! Since the county has been up and coming in the wine industry, and since I don't want to have to go to a winery every time I want a bottle of the local vine, this was the ticket!! This place is not the same Pokerville Market that I grew up with. Not only have I stopped shopping there, I actually used to work there, but was fired for following the chain of command in reporting the several health code violations and broken laws in the deli department. In my few short weeks I witnessed the slicers not being properly cleaned between uses, sandwiched being prepared by dirty, open sore covered hands without gloves, food prep surfaces not being properly cleaned after preparing raw chicken, the same oven mitts being used every day without being cleaned to remove the chickens for the rotisserie, pastries being pulled from the freezer bare handed after employees took out the trash, never stopping to wash their hands, most cold foods are prepared with the same knives and utensils not to mention all the pre-cooked cold foods are just foods from the hot case after that sit in the hot case for 6+ hours. Food safety says 4 hours then food begins to be unsafe. Then it needs to properly be cooled down within a certain matter of time. They take the hot food, dump it into plastic containers that are heat sensitive (slight melting occurs), labeled then put out to be sold. Oh, I forgot: the slicers. Roast beef blood dripping all over before your cheese is sliced. Hope you're not vegetarian. Raw cooked roast beef sliced (again, blood dripping) then smoked turkey being sliced. Taste funny you say? And the fact that the 1st time I properly cleaned the slicers, I was told specifically that I don't have enough time for that, and that I filled an entire deli bag (those things that we would get pounds of meat, cheese, etc) FILLED with old shavings of crustated meats and cheeses from around the slicers, beneath the slicers and encasing the power cords. But don't take my word for it, stop in, risk your health, or your family's, pick up some sandwiches, maybe some soup (sits for the entire day), try some puff pastries fresh from their freezers with God only knows how filthy those hands are. read more

This place is a joke. Everything is overpriced, the lines are always long and it takes forever for someone to come up, let alone them even calling someone, and the cashiers and bagger girl are just down right rude. I asked her to help me out to my car one day and she claimed to be too busy and walked off. This place used to have some decency but has gone nothing but downhill for over the years. 1/5, if i could give it a 0/5 I would. You folks would be better off driving to Folsom or Jackson for groceries, with as bad as this place has gotten I wouldn't even reccomend it to my worst enemy. read more
