We recently had to have a ceiling and some drywall repaired in our powder room. We called SJZ Construction and Sammy came out to assess the job. He seemed like a great guy, walked us through the process, and provided an estimate. His crew showed up the following Monday. They were punctual, polite, and kept our house clean while they worked. They completed the job in just a couple of days. The work looked great, but Sammy made sure that he came by to inspect the work before payment was made. The repair job was done well and the contractors who were hired did a good job. If you are looking for someone to do a solid job and you don't care so much about the project management, then they were great. If you like to stick to a schedule, scheduling with the company and trying to get in touch with them was awful. They would say that they would show up on Sunday at noon, and then never show up and never text to cancel. They would commit to showing up at 9-11am and then text me confused when I wasn't home to let them in at 3pm. I would text and call Sammy or whichever contractor I worked with and they wouldn't respond for days. The job was finished over a month ago and I am still trying to get a receipt, summary of work, and mold test results. They also left the demolition trash in my garage and told me they'd come back to throw it away (they never came back and I had to throw it away). Again, they do great work! But I personally wouldn't schedule with them again because of how frustrating communication and scheduling can be. I encourage them to clean up the logistical side of the house. Hire a scheduler and a dispatcher, send confirmation texts before the scheduling window, and send a text in advance if you can't make it on time or at all. Having the skills to remodel and repair is half of what someone is hiring when selecting a contractor. Being on time, organized, and reliable is the other half. read more

I thought Sammy's roofing crew did a good job until my AC guy went in the attic a couple months later and showed me pictures of the debris and trash. They didn't cover the insulation with plastic and didn't clean the debris or their trash. It's a hazard for anyone working in the attic. I spoke with Sammy about it and he agreed to clean the mess and replace the insulation for a "discounted" price. I've tried contacting him several times and crickets. I'm very disappointed because we had a good rapport and I thought I found a decent, trustworthy contractor. Nope. They're all the same. read more

I want to take a moment to appreciate and to thank Sammy and the team at SJZ construction on a bathroom remodel. They came highly recommended by my long-time property manager. After seeing his previous work, I felt at ease for our project. It was a complex endeavor combining having different surfaces seamlessly work together. In the end it came out perfect for us. A few things stood out with his process that should be mentioned. I can say it was a very personal experience. Unlike some contractors I've worked with, I was updated on the progress constantly, so I was always rest assured and takes your interest and concerns personally. To say everything went smoothly would be far from the truth. As we were away during the remodel, a severe case of water damage and mold was discovered that complicated everything. Sammy jumped right in along with Sean from "AAA water restoration" to get a handle on it and cleared it out and rebuilt the effected areas. I was truly impressed on their professionalism and integrity. I strongly recommend SJZ contractors for anyone who need either a simple project or a complete rebuild. Sammy came out (the next day!) and spent over an hour talking us through various options and then proceeded to help us learn a TON about the house we're considering buying. This construction firm had a very courteous receptionist who efficiently scheduled us with the owner, Sammy, for a walk through and free estimate of work we needed done which was replacing some windows that had rotted surrounds. Sammy studied everything thoroughly and identified which windows actually needed replacing and which did not but could be remedied with a simpler solution (caulking, who knew??). He gave us good advice about what needed to be done and the best way to take care of it. He has a lot of experience and was able to put our interests ahead of everything. Short version- WOW! Loooong version- We had 3 estimates to remodel our kitchen and were about to pull the trigger with another contractor until i spoke to my cousin, who convinced us to meet with Sammy from SJZ first. Adding more storage was at the top of our list, and we thought we knew exactly what we wanted after meeting with the other contractors until we met with Sammy. Sammy's vision for our kitchen was a complete 180 from what we were set on, and we were having a hard time picturing what it would look like from a hand drawn sketch Sammy did on the spot. Our project was long overdue, but we reluctantly agreed to give Sammy a few days to come up with a proposal, and we scheduled a second appointment the following week. The next day, we get a call from Sammy, asking us if he could have his framer stop by and take a look in our attic. We agreed and assumed it had to do with the recessed lighting we wanted. Sammy called the day before our appointment to confirm and told my wife he had some exciting news for us. He surprised us by showing up with a 3D design of our kitchen we weren't expecting that blew us away. The only problem was the layout had a portion of the kitchen/living room common wall removed & we were already told by to other contractors that it was a load bearing wall and would cost $12-15k to remove, so that wasn't an option for us. Then Sammy asks us if we're ready for our surprise......Hugh? He tells us he had his framer look in our attic to see if that wall was load bearing and confirmed a large portion of the wall wasn't and said he could remove it for an additional $2,800. I'll let the pictures tell the rest of the story. Sammy, a sincere THANK YOU for ERVERYTHING you did from beginning to the champagne toast at the end! I went online to find a contractor to help with my ADU. Sammy was the only guy that came by that also owns the company and knew what was needed for the project. He was also the only guy who showed up with a truck and tools. I showed him the plans and he walked me through the details as he reviewed them. It took a little over 3 months and just rented it out. Yes, it is possible to find a knowledgeable, responsive and honest contractor! We had a MAJOR plumbing issue, and I had two different contractors give two very different recommendations. A friend recommended Sammy, and he came to assess the issue the same day I called. His assessment was spot on, and although the repairs were out of his scope (unfortunately it required a sewer specialist), he quarterbacked the entire process including helping to get permits, etc to get the project done as quickly as possible. I have done several house remodels so I have some experience. These guys did a great job. They came out to the house and looked at everything and walked me through different options and had some really good ideas. I thought I wanted certain windows but they explained other options that were actually better for me. About the same price. I always learn something talking to good contractors and they were super helpful. I like the work they did on the bathrooms, the kitchen and some additional framing we needed done. they explained everything and they were really responsive to me.
