I had been wanting to "remodel" the front garden of my house for a long time, but somehow never got around to it. This summer, I decided to go for it, and used Yelp to sift through landscaping companies. I needed some hardscape work done as well, in addition to lawn and planter full changeover. Tom was very responsive, and after a quick first meeting, I felt very comfortable going with him. He came across as someone who knows what he is doing and diligent about his work. Tom immediately came out to check the problem. We could have tried to treat them but Tom suggested that he just plant new different trees. After finding this business on yelp and reading the previous reviews, I was looking forward to meeting and potentially working with Tom. Meeting with Tom this morning, I unfortunately don't share the same sentiment as the two previous reviewers. I found him to be unprofessional, rude, and arrogant. Instead of giving me professional insight into the yard that I am trying to landscape, he criticized my decision to purchase a large house with a small yard, and instead tried to tell me about what it takes to live in Playa Vista (somewhere that I have been living for five years). Random, I know. Then he accused me of having another contractor that I am currently working with (which if I was, I would have no need for Tom). When I told him that I didn't appreciate his approach and the way he was speaking with me, he threw his arms up and walked off, right to his car. Frankly, I'm relieved that he showed his true colors from the outset before there was any chance of me stupidly hiring him. I would never tell anyone on yelp what to do, but I would not waste your time with him if I was you. I have owned my home for about two and a half years and in that time I have used five different landscapers. Either I have had very bad luck or I am hard to please. Maybe both. In either case, Tom is the first one who I have actually enjoyed working with. He's knowledgeable about plants and irrigation and he has good ideas. He knows which plants need shade and which need sun, which ones will grow to be too big and which ones won't, and he makes recommendations accordingly while ultimately respecting the client's choices. He's very knowledgeable about irrigation and he can install, troubleshoot and repair it as needed. I presented him with a challenging drainage situation that nobody else had been able to resolve. Tom came up with a well thought out solution that has so far been effective. He doesn't try to over-sell and his prices are fair. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, he is reliable. He responds to e-mails and phone calls in a timely manner and he shows up on time for appointments. I can't tell you how many people don't and it drives me crazy.
