This place is great. Beautiful setting looking over the water and boats. I got a fish taco and shrimp taco. The seafood is high quality and fresh. The taco itself was meh but the seafood is the star. I even came back the next day and I got the fried calamari and fries. The pickle ketchup was awesome for the fries. The tartar sauce was a little lacking but I mixed in some hot sauce which really helped. The cocktail sauce had way too much horseradish. The lines are LONG at peak lunch hours and it's in the open sun. Service is kinda slow with only one register so the line does not move quickly. Captain Scott's lobster rolls are the best part about New London. I've tried both hot and cold lobster rolls here and I personally think the cold ones are better. The cold lobster rolls have a sweet and tangy mayo flavor and are less fishy compared to the hot buttered rolls. The restaurant is packed in the summertime and service can be quite slow, however, the location is amazing. It's nestled near a boat dock and you get to enjoy beautiful water views as you're chowing down on your lobster roll. Overall, I think Captain Scott's is good and not great because nothing really compares to the lobster rolls in Maine. For Connecticut, it's pretty good for what you get though. The clam strips and onion rings are a nice touch but they're nothing to write home about. However, the ice cream here is pretty good if you have room for dessert! read more

Went with a bus full of seniors. It was very busy. But they had it all under control. You gave them your order and pulled to the side within 10-20 minutes your name was being called. I ordered the grilled scallops roll and fries. They were so good. And just the right amount for me. Actually I had 3 leftover so a friend ate them. It's an outside take out place right on the water. And by the train tracks in New London CT. Really worth the trip. Wish I went more often. So if you love fresh seafood and you're in the New London/ Groton area stop in for lunch. You won't regret it. It probably took 30 mins to get my order. However, I definitely enjoyed my food! I had the hot lobster roll and a create-a-plate platter. I really love the outdoor seating next to the water view but umbrellas would be nice for the tables not under the shade structure, as waiting for a table in the shade can take a while, but a soft serve might not make it so bad. The Captain Scott's team blocked off the farthest outdoor section & also had a food truck camped back there just to take orders from the partygoers. Moved to CT from RI and went there to get Maine lobsters for my daughter's 23rd Birthday as I started this tradition when she was 10 and found the place easy enough. Saw the outside line which was VERY long and thankfully I didn't stand on that to buy live lobster and went into the small market and pleasant woman greeted and helped me buy six 2lb lobsters each for 5 of us...because the birthday girl get's two. While waiting I noted the things for sale and in their small gift shop and it was a very clean place which made me confident I found the right place. Will quickly say that Captain Scott's Lobster Dock is reliably the same whenever you go. Long lines to order food, that is neither fast or snail paced. After ordering, the wait is not bad at all. I ordered the large hot lobster roll... it was $29 and delicious! Is it worth $29? You'll have to decide. It will probably be the only lobster I eat this summer, my father treated, and i enjoyed every bite! There's plenty of shaded and unshaded places to eat, and clean but rugged (typical of most seafood shacks). The hush puppies were the only thing I don't recommend.. too dense and salty. Otherwise, as I said, this is a reliable place to eat at... once you try it, you'll know what to expect. Dogs are welcome. Went to Captain Scott's after a hot hilly half marathon and a beautiful lighthouse cruise. The line was a little long and a little slow but I didn't notice too much because I was chatting with the gentleman behind me. Because Im from landlocked state and intended on bringing food home I ordered a lot. 4 Mystic oysters, calamari platter, large cold lobster roll with mayo and a small hot lobster roll and finish it off a lobster salad with cold lobster meat. The calamari was just ok to me...didn't have any seasoning..just batter and it was a little bit greasy. The oysters were fresh and amazing. The hot lobster roll was a little cold . definitely should have asked for more butter...I think another dousing of hot butter would've taken the sandwich to excellent. The lobster salad was ok. The lobster meat wasn't as sweet as I had hoped but they didn't skimp on the lobster...it was plentiful. Overall I enjoyed by experience. It's definitely a place to visit early afternoon. The weather had the possibility of rain and with out door seating we thought might help keep some of the crowds away and we were right! I try to review Captain Scott's once per decade. This festive joint doesn't have a single item that I immediately crave as much as the lobster rolls at Lobster Landing or the chowder at Abbott's, but the menu has a pleasing modularity. And it has a unique market niche; in a state where train stations are often many miles from the town bearing their name and from the waterfront, Captain Scott's is the people's seafood shack. It's not a place on Whatever Island that has outhouses, closes at 4 and is 12 miles from a train. New London isn't Newport, but there are boats and water and the region is certainly more appealing than the nauseating dystopia of the New Haven waterfront. With my lobster roll bingo card already checked, I opted for the steamers, which usually are too large for my mix-and-match tendencies. The bivalves were delightfully oceanic as I added different permutations of butter, broth and lemon. Given that my last review was 2014 I'll also mention that I liked my 2022 swordfish special. If soda sommelier was a job I'd recommend pairing steamers and chowder with a Hosmer Mountain Chocolate Cream. read more

Parking is plenty and always expect a line We have been here multiple times and zero issues. Lines are fine which means high turn over! FISH IS FRESH! My wife got the fish and chips as well as a shrimp cocktail and she could not stop talking about! I just got a cheeseburger and hot dog...all cooked well! They did mess up our order WHICH IS FINE bc they were slammed and they are human. They handled their mess up in a timely and professional manner. The clam strips at Captain Scott's are tremendous, and definitely worth a visit if you are anywhere in Southeastern Connecticut. After a short rendezvous in nearby Mystic, I decided I hadn't had my fill of tourist traps and headed to this restaurant in New London. I'm fairly sure, however, like Cantler's in Maryland, Captain Scott's is likely enjoyed by tourist and local alike. Plenty of individuals seemed to be life long residents of the area, and I did appreciate the swift and friendly service. The surrounding area is a pier that looks out on the water and gives a nice little extra kick to your experience. You may be here for the lobster roll, and if you are I would suggest the hot lobster roll sitting in a pool of drawn butter that somehow did not disintegrate the bun (as unfortunately happened in a recent experience in Boston). The lobster is fresh and plump enough although I felt the meat was a tinge tougher than I would have preferred. If you have rightly decided that clam in all its forms is king (or queen) in Connecticut, congratulations you have come to the right place. I can say that the clam strips here are moderately battered and still carry a nice taste of the sea. I added just a touch of lemon, and it was pure heaven. I would strongly suggest ordering these especially if you enjoy fried seafood. Overall, I feel like the lobster rolls are solid, the clam strips are exceptional, and the service and atmosphere add value to the experience. It's worth a trip. read more

Came here on a Wednesday afternoon with my partner on the way to Cape Cod. It's been a while since I've been here (4 years ago, pre-pandemic). We got a quart of New England clam chowder, and a hot lobster roll. We opted for a side of potato chips with the lobster roll and the soup comes with oyster crackers (typical of this area). We were surprised out food came out in less than 5 minutes. The clam chowder was filling but not the "best". The lobster roll was also chunky and filled with lots of lobster meat, but we wished that the temperature was just...hotter? It was very lukewarm. The brioche hot dog roll was honestly an amazing touch though -- sweet and a little doughy where the butter touched. I can't remember what the prices were like back then, but compared to other "lobster rolls" I've gotten in touristy areas outside of the NE area, $24.95 plus tax and tip is pretty great. $13.95 plus tax and tip for the quart of chowder. If looking for decent quality lobster rolls and soup along a waterside, this is your spot. Just don't expect the "best of the best" chowder. If you get lobster rolls super fresh, you'll be getting the best price and best tasting rolls around. If lukewarm lobster rolls, there will be something left to be desired. read more

The best thing about this place is that it's on the dock. A view of water and boats and smells of the ocean definitely enhances the meal. There was a consistent line but service was pretty fast. The food itself felt overpriced. Their large lobster roll is still pretty small and it was very bland. I do wonder if their other seafood items are better. Will find out next time. read more
