After eating a disappointing seafood meal at a nearby town's recommended wharf-side restaurant, my vacationing spouse and I decided to explore the eastern coastline along Highway 1 hoping to catch some beautiful snapshots of the sea and stop at a quaint oceanside restaurant on the waterfront. Unlike Pacific Coast Hwy 1 that closely follows the water, the east coast road more often curves inland with no view of the ocean. Seeing more trees and greenery than waves, we headed back south along the interstate and exited at Old Saybrook. Checking with YELP, he found Skippers, and although it was "another" seafood place, I reluctantly agreed to try it. Skippers didn't seem fancy on the outside, yet it sure was clean on the inside. Patrons ordered their food at a bar and picked it up when ready. Most all of the seafood selections came fried. I nixed that immediately because my supposedly fantastic fried cod sandwich the day before was anything but crispy (although the cod seemed tasty). Instead I ordered a gyro. It came on hot, fresh pita bread with lamb and beef Greek-style meat, tomatoes, onions, lettuce and tzatziki sauce -- yum, yum, yum. I spent 2 summers in Greece and this tasted as delicious as a genuine Greek gyro. An order of hot and especially salty curly fries accompanied my meal, as well as a soda, extra charges of course. Gyro $8.99, curly fries $4.99, soda $2.59. I sat outside on one of the metal picnic benches with umbrellas and chose my condiments and plastic serverware from a basket on a table near the door. A trash can, a place to stack trays on top and hand sanitizer as I left made my exit a satisfying one. read more

The fisherman's platter was a joke for the price, you can count how many whole belly clams, fish, shrimps and scallops. I couldn't even ask to try any of my husband's food. I ate lunch in their Old Saybrook restaurant. Very clean and friendly service. I had the chicken souvlaki and onion rings. Very very good. Onion ring batter was very light. My wife had the fried clam strips. My only criticism that I hope the chef might read is to consider draining or absorbing the grease off the food before serving. Came back for a second time and brought family members with me. I had the hot lobster roll which was great, and you can put as little or as much butter you want on your lobster roll as you want as the butter is served on the side. The coleslaw was also perfectly made with just the right amount of spices and mayonnaise. My other half doesn't eat seafood so he had the friend chicken dinner. He said it was okay, the chicken was cooked throughly through and was moist but the coating was lacking spices, it was like a plain "flour like" batter with no taste. I was Jonesing for some fried whole bellies and happened to be in Old Saybrook. Unfortunately, the clams weren't running very big and they were on the greasy side.
