Hot buttered, lobster roll, and a garden salad
    Allison K.

Fantastic all around! Very clean, helpful, service. Nautical ambience, and wonderfully fresh food! I am a hot lobster roll (otherwise known as the Connecticut style lobster roll) connoisseur. And this one is second on my list (second only to Flanders Fish Market)! Everything was very fresh, flavorful and prepared quickly. I have returned many times, and will certainly be back again!

Skippers is to be skipped. Just mediocre. Nothing I ate made me want to come back here for more. Great for the experience to sit by the water and pet friendly, but food was average and felt I can taste this anywhere.

The restaurant was nice and clean and the food came out in a timely matter and it was all freshly made to order. The cashier was patient and friendly as it was our first experience.

    Lobster Roll & Fried Seafood

Ahoy there! So, I stopped by Skippers Seafood in Old Saybrook and let me tell you, it was like stepping into a fast food joint, but with a fancy price tag. I ordered the lobster roll, and well, it was just okay. Nothing to write home about, unless your home is a boring place where nothing exciting ever happens. Then I went for the fried seafood platter, and boy oh boy, did it remind me of Long John Silver's, only if he became a pirate and looted your wallet! Yarr! It was just okay. All in all, Skippers is fine for a quick fix of fried seafood, but don't expect to be blown away. It's just like that old saying goes: "If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with, unless the one you're with is Skippers Seafood in Old Saybrook.

I ate lunch in their Old Saybrook restaurant. Very clean and friendly service. I had the chicken souvlaki and onion rings. Very very good. Onion ring batter was very light. My wife had the fried clam strips. My only criticism that I hope the chef might read is to consider draining or absorbing the grease off the food before serving. The clams were definitely too oily and it was pooling on the paper bowl. Here is my picture of the clams trying to show the amount of oil.

Ordered fish sandwich. Received a cute little container of butter covered with a scant amount of tarter sauce!

Good spot for some fresh seafood. More of a fast food restaurant than a fine dining but service and food were good.

Whole belly clams are too small and way overpriced at $33 a platter. Can't recommend them at that price.

It's been a while since I've been here, but this little seafood shack has never done me wrong. I pulled in just after 1:00 PM on a Monday afternoon and the order line at the window was steady. The staff were cheerful and moved us guests along quickly. I put in the order for some Rhode Island clam chowder and six clam fritters. I also ordered a birch beer. Within 10 minutes, my order was ready at the pick up counter. I found my way to one of the open and very clean tables inside the restaurant. At first glance, the clam chowder looked way too rich, almost New England style (white and thick) I kind of sighed a little bit and felt a little disappointed. But once I stuck that spoon into the chowder, that thickness seemed not that important. The clams were generously portioned, some small, some large, some nice and chewy, along with a great flavored broth and some small diced white potatoes. This was deliciousness at its best. Simple with that by the sea scent and flavor. This could be one of the best clam chowders I've had yet in Connecticut. The six clam fritters were good, yet a bit greasy. The fritter dough itself was delicious, but I would've liked a little bit more clams in the fritters. I didn't like the tartar sauce on the side, so I went to the counter and got some cocktail sauce. This is what should be served in my opinion with the fritters. I loved this combination, and I definitely would order this again as an appetizer. The birch beer was delicious. I think it was on tap so I don't know the brand. Again, I would order this again. For a little drive in that is a bit antiquated, the cleanliness is on point. I didn't check the restroom though. When going through Old Saybrook, this would be great consideration for a quick lunch.

I wish every person who buys fresh seafood, could truly know the story of Saybrook Seafood…read more It's a classic .......This place is owned by a woman from a family of fourth-generation, CT Shoreline fishwives...Fishwives, a term sometimes used as an insult...but when it comes to fresh seafood, is the highest compliment/assurance of quality and local knowledge. I don't know how many generations of fishing are represented in this family, but I do know that the quality and freshness of their fish reflect every generation... I'll make it simple.... -Saybrook Seafood knows every clammer, oysterman, fin fisherman, dragger, trawler, tuna hunter, long-liner and lobsterman from Clinton to Point Judith. -Atlantic seafood knows every wholesaler from here to the Fulton fish market. -Saybrook seafood chowder recipes have been honed for generations. I know because when I was a kid (I'm 65) the clam chowder I relished is still made exactly by Saybrook Seafood..right down to the perfect consistency of the potatoes, not too firm, not too mushy... -Atlantic seafood has a wide selection gathered from all over the fish world.. -Old saybrook seafood has a much smaller selection because, with very few exceptions, if it isn't available locally, it isn't in the case... -Sea scallops are from Day Boats.....Tuna is from Point Judith.... -hard calms are from local clammers -oysters are from third generation oyster farms, farmed to taste like oysters...not hybrid, cross-bred, designer-named lab-rats... -Steamers are from Maine -Stuffed shrimp is a simply-seasoned, perfectly-balanced, third-generation recipe that honors and enhances....without flavor-masking, the main player in the dish... -Herring is from an old local guy -smoked fish is from a different old local guy -Shad is from yet another old local guy -And most of these old local guys...are part of the family... Get the picture? In short Saybrook seafood is the tip of an iceberg....an iceberg of colorful local history....the watermen of CT and Rhode Island, who have made their living catching and digging and knowing local seafood for generations.... ..who still think marketing means foodshopping....and for whom quality, freshness and cleanliness are not a state requirement, or even good business, but a simple issue of family pride, and unbreakable commitment to honor family traditions that will never, never be forsaken....

Unfortunately, the woman helping my mom was incredibly rude even snapping at her several times when she asked a question or tried to move the butcher paper to see the weight of the fish on the scale. I am aware the store was very busy at the time my mom was in, but this is so incredibly unacceptable and I am disgusted that we just spent so much money after being treated that way rather than walking out. I tried to call the store several times today to voice my upset over the phone directly rather than leaving a poor review. No one has answered and there is no answering machine. We will no longer be customers at Saybrook Seafood.
