They have the largest selection- including frozen items that are difficult to find elsewhere (like large lobster tails- as big as 16 ounces!). We rent a cottage in Old Saybrook for one week every summer, and one night of that week we have friends over and do a lobster pot from Atlantic Seafood. It couldn't be easier. Corn, potatoes, mussels or clams, and lobsters are all in one pot--add 3 cups water, boil for about 30 minutes, melt some butter, and serve. Order ahead, pick up at about the appointed time, bring the pot back at your leisure the next day. It's always a special and festive meal and the service is friendly and quick. read more

Used to be fabulous. But there's a young smart-a// guy behind the counter who not only sold us some terrible, rubbery tuna a while back but recently tried to argue with me about how farm raised "organic" salmon is better than wild caught. One tiny detail: the USDA does not currently have any certification for "organic" seafood. It's a meaningless term when applied to fish. So either he's ignorant of this fact or trying to sell a bill of goods. Many of their selections are now farm raised rather than wild caught. Certainly their prerogative, but disappointing. But be sure to ask because they are not up front about which fish are farm raised. read more

An owner can make or break a business and unfortunately new ownership has led to a few very unpleasant experiences for me. I have been a customer for many many years and when the new owners took over I asked them (as a loyal supporter of their business) to support my run for St Jude's Children's Hospital that I do in Memphis each December. They didn't even respond to my first request and then when I sent a follow up email they said no, they had already donated and no intention of making any additional donations. I was quite disappointed in the way this was handled but continued going there at least once a week. Then around a month ago I had finished ordering and went to the cash register to pay. I was told by an employee to "step aside" for another customer that was after to me; stunned trying to process what had just been said to me I complied. That was strike two and three for me. My go to is Saybrook Seabrood and every thing is fresh and not farm raised. I went to Atlantic Seafood. What a mistake. I was guaranteed by the owner that although the salmon was organic and farmraised it was the same as wild. They lied. And the 'white shrimp' was horrible and had a freezer taste. I thought I'd give it a chance but these people have no idea what fresh seafood is. Stay away! They'd sell an old piece of fish before they'd throw it out. read more

This is one of the finest Seafood establishments you will ever find in the country! Service personnel are helpful, courteous, knowledgeable. The products themselves, whether fresh off the boat or frozen, are excellent. My family favorites are their fresh Salmon and Scrod, Shrimp Salad from the deli, and Frozen Baked Stuffed Shrimp. Atlantic Seafood is the best! Their fish is always fresh and delicious! The staff is so wonderful! We came in literally one second before close and they couldn't have been more gracious. We come weekly to order swordfish or salmon, tonight we grabbed both plus some steamers. For one pound of salmon, one pound of swordfish, four pound and a half pounds of steamers the total was $70. It is worth every penny! The fish is always the best cut and so fresh. I love Atlantic seafood which is why we come so often! Love them! Special shout out to the wonderful staff!!! read more

Atlantic Seafood came highly recommended by my attorney Bull, who lives in Old Saybrook. His brother DotCom and my aunt Judy confirmed its the place for serious seafood on this stretch Connecticut shore. My girlfriend called around and priced lobsters. Not only was Atlantic Seafood a dollar or two cheaper than competitors, they also did not have a tiered pricing structure for different weight lobsters. The selection of seafood was fantastic with multiple delicious species of fish, oysters and shellfish, and shrimp of gigantic size as well. We stuck to the lobster. These we brought home alive for a 12 minute hot water bath. The lobsters were filled with sweet meat! Who can ask for anything more. read more

As a non-fish eater, I am here to say that my husband and all of our houseguests declare Atlantic Seafood the finest fish store on the east coast. As a former fish eater (before I became allergic), I salivate when they grill Atlantic's swordwish, make crabcakes, sautee flounder, and on and on. The scallops I bought were remarkably tasteless. The thing with this place is it looks enticing with a decent selection of fish and prepared food that veers towards a gourmet market. While the prices were right (well, they were average), the quality was horrible. Came specifically for sea scallops. Sea scallops will vary in color from pure white, to almost orange depending on their diet, but they should be one solid color. They shouldn't be pure white in the center and yellow around the edges, this indicates age. I asked to smell them and they reeked of pure ammonia. No thanks... wont be back. read more

This is our "go to" seafood market. Lisa, the owner, is very helpful with great preparation suggestions and always willing to suggest something new and delicious. The oysters here are great and they usually have at least 3 options to choose from. Or if you are like us, you don't choose, but rather get some of each. Bomster scallops... the best you can get in our opinion. They are flash frozen right on the boat to ensure freshness, trust me, this is the way to go. We typically buy them in the 5# blocks that Atlantic receives them in from the fisherman. We then take them home and break off 1 to 1.5# meal-sized portions, only defrosting them as we need them. Tender, succulent, and soooo delicious simply seared with salt & pepper in unsalted butter. Hands down, we we love this place and rarely buy seafood from anywhere else. We drive by no less than 4 other seafood sellers to get here, and the extra trip is well worth it. read more

I purchased 2 lbs of steamers on Sunday 6/23 and I was absolutely shocked at the poor quality. They smelled terrible when we went to cook them later that same day despite rinsing them several times and looking them over carefully in case there were one or two dead ones causing the odor. Against our better judgement we steamed them anyway and the terrible odor immediately filled our kitchen. Thankfully we decided that the $15.00 wasn't worth being sick and we pitched them into the woods. I used to be a good customer of Atlantic but not any more. This was not a borderline case. Stopped in a couple weeks ago and bought some frozen lobster meat . It was so fresh when I used it later that day. Went to grocery store and bought 6 lobsters and never again. I picked all the meat out but they were shedders and not much meat .. they don't tell you that when you buy them. Lobster meat was well worth the price !! I made the mistake of trusting a fish monger where I can't see and smell the product before purchase. I ordered sea scallops. They were brought to me in a sealed bag showing they picked them for my order. Home is literally 4 minutes away and it took that long to get them into the refrigerator. In preparation for dinner, we of course opened the package. At first the smell seemed confined to the kitchen, and they only have been dried and seasoned not cooked. Now, still before cooking the horrible fishy odor has permeated the house. I hope the taste does not reflect this odor, more of low tide than sea salt. From now on, I'll only purchase from a fish monger from whom I can see and smell and trust the product. read more

If you get steamers, half them will prob be dead, they cook dead lobsters that are from the tank and use them for lobster rolls, soft shell crabs smell really bad and ooze yellow stuff out of them, and the cooked shrimp they sell by the pound isn't really a pound more like .85 . I am there every week getting Arctic char, salmon, swordfish or whatever we're in the mood for! We love their lobster cakes , Crab cakes and lemon dill shrimp!
