They'll give you the run around, tell you all sorts of reasons you're not a good fit for a dog--first they told me I wasn't a good fit because "the dog needed to be the only pet in the home", I reply saying he will be the only pet in the home (as mentioned in the application I submitted). Then they reply and say "oh okay well this dog is for someone without a very active lifestyle". I reply and say that's fine I'm happy with a little couch potato (which I knew bc I read the dog's profile before applying for him, duh, and I know an 8+ year old dog isn't going to be up for hikes and jogs). Then they say but this dog can't live in an apartment. Then I reply "but you just said he wasn't very active". Then they say "well we meant he can't live in a city environment". So why are you advertising dogs for adoption in the city? Where most people live in apartments? They literally didn't even want to interview me, contact my references, or arrange a meet and greet and instead told me they believe they will be stuck with the dog I applied for "forever". The point of rescues is to place dogs in forever homes, not keep them in shelters or fosters for the rest of their lives. I know the importance of finding a good fit, believe me. I know well-intentioned, kind people are rejected from rescues for all sorts of reasons. I love rescuing. I'm not a first time dog owner, I'm very experienced in +R training, I feed Orijen for crying out loud. Find it hard to believe I'm not a good fit for ANY of their dogs.

I specifically wanted kittens and the big shelters I went to didn't have any. B. Because all the ultra-cool hip rescue organizations require you to practically sign away your firstborn child in order to adopt. I understand that they want to find the perfect adopter because it's in the best interest of the animal, but I see people bragging about their 2-page essays that accompany their applications because they're such A+ adopters. And hey, just because they want to assign "Exhibit As and Bs photos of their home life," high school English teacher references and SAT add-ons, doesn't mean that should set the standard. Holland from Cat Castle was warm, friendly and helpful when I reached out to her; the friendliest out of EVERY place I had looked into! I told her which kittens I was interested in, filled out the application, and she delivered my sweet boys to my apartment! She even came back to pick them up to take them to get neutered before delivering them back to me! I loved her energy and I love how she and Max have the knowledge to treat some of their rescues in their own home making some vet visits avoidable! While other pet rescues have an almost snooty demeanor about their approval process, I love how down-to-earth Cat Castle is and their non-discriminatory application process. And I'm so happy I was able to support a small, up-and-coming, NYC non-profit that truly cares for animals and wants to match them with potential adopters without being judgy about it. I was dropping off donations and when I arrived Sammi the Black one was so excited waiting at the entrance. I had just unexpectedly lost one and just needed a little time. I was leaving for Scotland and thought if she's still there, it's meant to be. Well! She was ! I took her right home. She had been surrendered to a high kill shelter and rescued by start II from there , so I knew that was already her name. She's been with about a year now and had fit in perfectly with my other rescues. This rescue is my go too, number one without question. Thank you to all the volunteers, your hard work does not go unnoticed!!!! The blond next to her only came here, because he had terrible anxiety issues and he is so perfect now. She is always crying the blues for donations and no one can figure out where all the money is going because the place is a mess. She gets the newspapers to write false information that makes the community think they are in dyer need and then people send money. Its despicable. The room they used the adopt out of in the Petsmart in Wayne got shut down by the board of health because the conditions were so bad. She has been supporting a cat hoarder for years and years who has more than 50 cats in her tiny apt . She gives her food and litter and they are living on top of each other in a small space. someone should shut this down. The poor cats. Don't support this shelter. It's not on the up and up.

But I digress...adopting a dog is a huge commitment and it requires time, money, and significant thought about the lifestyle changes that such a commitment will make. My sister recently reached out to SSR regarding several dogs after researching extensively and having several chats with the team: she was advised to submit an application, so she did. She reached out to her landlord, references, and local vet to have them on standby because all previous interaction implied the dogs were available and in desperate need of homes. Ironically, 10 days later: no response from the rescue. After following up a 2nd time, we received a very short and dismissive email summarized as saying "sorry dogs aren't available. Best of luck in your search". Since the tone of the entire email was so cold and rude and unlike any previous experience we had with the rescue, we followed up saying in the nicest way possible, that it would have been nice to be looped in sooner and while we understand that they're busy and that the dogs may have happily been adopted, it would have been nice to be informed in a timely fashion so that we could plan accordingly. Apparently, that struck a nerve with SSR (unsure who since no one signs their names). What proceeded was was a series of the most unprofessional and disgusting emails I have ever seen from an organization claiming to do good for the world. It is ironic that they have had time to send multiple hateful, ridiculing, and childish emails when feeling accused of poor business practice and rude tones, but could not even reply to an application in a timely manner with something as simple as "Received. Thank You!" For more than 10 days. In said emails, the "representative" of SSR mocked my sister immediately , called her names, told her she was mentally unstable and that she should consider an emotional support pup (with the implication of good luck to the dog you bring home), as well as telling her that she would be forwarding her personal information to all other rescues in the area so that she would be unable to adopt elsewhere. I have never in my life encountered such a threatening and bullying tone from an organization who is supposedly looking out for the well being of dogs and potential adopters. Aside from mocking mental illness as a whole (which should never be used as a bullying tactic regardless of the situation), this organization threatened to send out HER PERSONAL INFORMATION and email to unauthorized parties simply because she asked them to be more considerate of future adopters time and efforts. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE?!?! As a quick sidebar...Let me also summarize our family dog history so you do not think we are a family of psychos who do not understand the dog adoption process. We have grown up with rescues our entire life, namely focusing on challenging dispositions and behavior issues. Our father is a trainer for rescues with behavioral and socialization problems so we have spent plenty of time loving the scared, timid, food aggressive biters, escape artists, etc,etc. I currently have a rescue from an amazing org in NYC and she is becoming a therapy dog and is now being used as a socialization pup for dogs who are struggling with adjustment and dog reactivity. We are a family that knows and loves dogs immensely. We have worked with tons of rescues and rescue dogs of all shapes, sizes and personalities,and never in my life, personal or professional, have I encountered a group of people (or simply one...tough to tell since no one takes personal ownership at SSR), more unkind, combative or rude than these. As I said, adopting a dog is a commitment and a two way street. It is work and it is incredibly rewarding. It's also a huge shame that people like this can so readily ruin an experience that is supposed to be memorable only in the most positive way. Shame on you, SSR. Especially when the world is just needing some kindness and human compassion. PS..I would love to share the entire email chain. It would be wildly funny if it wasn't so alarming that people like this actually exist.
