Booked this hotel a month in advance through Princeline. During the checkout process, the number of people in the room reverted back to "one" by default. Called Priceline, they said to call 31st St Broadway hotel. I called and the phone rang..and rang, nothing. I tried for several days before doing what I felt we had no choice to do, cancel. We cancelled and rebooked with a another hotel with fears that we would arrive to a locked door. Although we cancelled two weeks prior to check-in. This hotel charged a 271.00 fee. Complete and total unfair, rip-off. Under the circumstances, I felt screwed. I would not stay here after reading the reviews of poor customer service. In addition, when you shower, you have no privacy. No thanks! I've stayed in many hotels in NYC, boutique to the least expensive. Amazing Hotel in the Heart of Manhattan, I Highly Recommend It! I stayed here for 4 months while studying at Pace University on a student visa, having come all the way from Germany, and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Honestly, I expected it to be just okay, but it exceeded my expectations, it was great. The staff are some of the friendliest people you'll meet in Manhattan. They're also very professional and stick to their word. The front desk team is always welcoming, ready to help, and available 24/7. You feel genuinely safe here thanks to the constant security presence. Cleanliness is my top priority, and this place delivered. The rooms are spotlessly clean and well-maintained by a thoughtful and hardworking housekeeping team. If I had to sum up the rooms in two words, I'd say: ''cozy and clean''. Over the course of 4 months, a lot can happen, but everything about this accommodation was positive. The location is very central, almost right between the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building (Macy's is at walkable distance, they all are). The subway station is right next door, and there are plenty of cozy cafés around. The hotel also offers Wi-Fi and many other amenities. Never experienced this degree of racism I have felt extremely disrespected and publicly humiliated compared to how the staff treats his other guests. His treatment of me has been as contentious as it has been continuous, and I feel it is a result of some racial and/or age discrimination he harbors towards people like me. I have to walk past him every time I come or go and I get nasty looks from him. When I asked if he didn't like me for some reason he started yelling at me and told me to go somewhere else but never give my refund and at that point I no longer feel safe. For those that don't know Manhattan hotels are EXTREMELY expensive! You better make sure you go with 2 to 4 people to share or, unless you're very rich, it's off to Jersey or Queens for you! I went on a trip solo and thought I'd have to take that route, but I found this hotel and immediately booked it at a little over $100 per night (2 months in advance for 7 nights). I was a little hesitant because of the shared bathrooms, but I've never been a hotel snob so I went for it. Best decision I've ever made! The best word I can use for this place is VALUE! Let me break this down: * Room- My room was small, but big enough to handle my stuff. I don't travel for hotels so as long as I had privacy and a bed we're good! * Shared bathrooms- My floor had 2 bathrooms for about 12 to 16 rooms. That may sound bad but in my entire week of needing to use the bathroom for showers or using the toilet one was always available AND fully stocked/clean. * Housekeeping- They are on it! Bed was always made and had plenty of towels each day. * Check in and Check out- I arrived to NYC at 8am. Check in was at 3pm, but I asked if any rooms were ready. There was and I was able to check in at 9am! Check out was at noon and they did hold my luggage (free, but I left a tip) as my flight was at 9:30pm. They were absolutely flexible! * Location- It's in mid manhattan/murray hill area. You are right next to the 6 Subway. The hotel is between Park and Lexington. Surrounding businesses include: Barber shop, Dry Cleaners/Laundry service, sushi restaurant, bbq restaurant, a fancy pizzeria, lenwich deli, a 24 hour deli/market, a bagel place, a dunkin donuts/baskin robins and probably more! You are 10 minutes (walking) from the Empire State Building. My experience in NYC was memorable. This hotel is a definitely winner and highly recommend. read more

Great location, great staff. It is very close to the Empire State Building . You can walk to time square from this hotel . The staff is very attentive and nice. They make you feel at home Considering all the hotels in midtown were expensive this one was very cheap and it is so worth it . For the holidays, this was the best deal we could find -- and for midtown east at about $120/ night, this was perfect for us. Room size: cozy, to say the least. A double room = 1 double bed, with 2 flat pillows and very basic sheeting. Good for 2 people max. Clean, warm... but really, not much walking room or place to store large luggage. No closet (just a small 3 foot coat rack w/ 3 hangers); small TV from the 90's, desk, and heating unit (which I think was centrally controlled). Room also has a smallish sink, a few mirrors, a hair dryer, nightstand... but no fridge. Can ask for a safe at the front desk. Shared bathrooms: wasn't too big of a deal for us. Our room was right next to the shower + toilet on the 3rd floor. Decent (but not strong) water pressure, petite shower; soap, shampoo/ conditioner combo, and towels in the actual room so remember to bring them. Ambience: loved the antique feel, narrow stairwell, and quietness. This place is silent. Internet: really, really spotty. Not dependable. But it's free, so hey... Service: pleasant and polite. Room kept very clean. Front desk very easy to work with and attentive. Parking: haha, not in this area! Fitness center nearby? New York Sports Club - they usually have some trial deals going on (there's one at E 34th x Park). There is a closer club, Synergy, across the street, but I haven't heard the most reliable business practices from them. Or, you could get your run/ bike on in Central Park, which is north by about 30 blocks... the 6 mi loop is pretty nice. Safety of the area: Midtown East is fairly business-y. Overall, felt pretty safe & clean. Nearby eats & other important details: Cosi (a NYC chain), Japanese restaurant downstairs (fair), Natureworks (health food restaurant)... and Dunkin Donuts around the corner if you need cheap coffee. Closest subway we found was the 6 (local green line) at 33rd or 28th, both a few blocks away / about 5-7 min walking. The central location also makes Grand Central, Union Square, and Times Square really easy to walk to. There's loads more food there. Duane Reade and Chase are also within 5 minutes from the hotel. Airport transportation: we ended up taking a cab from JFK to here, cost $45 + tip, flat fee. I'm not sure what the rates are on days other than Xmas evening, but they're likely cheaper. Subway should be pretty easy too. I'd totally stay here again. Reservations were made online, and super easy. Wouldn't recommend it to a family, however, but nice for solo, couples, or small group travelers. read more

They let us check in at 7:00 am when we weren't supposed to check in until 9:00 am... Our tired selves really appreciated that because we had just arrived there from the airport. Friendly service at the front desk. Share bathrooms are super clean! We had a double room... decent sized bed but the room is small. No closet, but there's a tiny TV and tiny sink in the room. There's some awkward design though.... Our door was right across (like 2 feet space in between) this other door from which people come up on the stairs, and of course I got hit on one occasion. Not a big deal I guess, since people don't loiter around in the hall... But there's the small possibility of getting knocked out by an opening door, fyi. Still recommend ear plugs if you're a light sleeper. Definitely would stay here again. Only negatives bringing it down a star were: Cheap toilet paper and sheets. Don't think I've used that painful toilet paper since public elementary school. Slow Wifi - ended up just using my phone. To be fair we were at the end of the hall so maybe it was far from the router. Staff wasn't very friendly... Not mean at all just didn't do any "chit-chat". I'm so happy to have stayed here on our recent trip to NYC. I ended up finding Hotel 31 here on yelp. I narrowed my search down to price and location. We stayed here Thanksgiving week and the price was surprising reasonable. They didn't increase the rates for the holiday. The location offered easy access to the 33rd St. subway and walking distance to Time Square and plenty other attractions. We were greeted with a friendly welcome when we arrived. We were able to check in early which was nice. Unlike some reviewers I actually enjoyed the elevator ride. Our room was on the 3rd floor. The room was small with a sink and mirror. The shared restroom was directly next door to our room which was very convenient. The restrooms were always clean and available. We loved Hotel 17 but it was shut down earlier this month. Once again we were headed into the city and needed a clean, safe place to stay with the basic amenities. Hotel 31 came up on Booking.com for $135 or $158.58 with taxes, a double room with a shared bathroom. Sometimes it is cheaper to go directly through the property but this was not the case. The hotel's direct website only had Deluxe rooms with private baths for $250 plus. Since this is a sister property to Hotel 17 we new what to expect and jumped at the price. The building is old with a slightly terrifying-in-a-good-way elevator that can fit only about 2.5 people inside. The rooms are clean and comfy but also dated, with wallpaper and carpeting. The shared bathrooms in the hall were always clean and your room does come with a sink and towels for brushing your teeth and washing your face. All in all, it was what we expected except the air conditioner. The room was stuffy and warm so we put on the a.c. only to be made deaf by the sound of a broken jet taking off. The a.c. was so loud that if we stayed more than one night I would have asked to switch rooms. It woke us up throughout the night many times- whenever it would kick on to cool down the warm room. The bed was ok, really this is the type of place you stay for one night when you won't be in the hotel much. No big complaints other than the louder than loud a.c. We'd be open to staying here again for a night. Good location, decent rate, clean, and safe. read more

This place is a hidden gem. It was actually a bit like staying in a Wes Anderson movie, with the antique elevator and quirky carpeting and the oddly curved hallways. In a city that's always trying to be as cutting edge as possible, it was kind of magical to find such a classic, old-fashioned hotel. I was a little wary of the shared bathrooms, but it wasn't a problem at all: there are two bathrooms for about 10 rooms, and we stayed for 2 nights and never had to wait. The room also had a sink. Most of the guests seemed to be older couples from Europe and were very quiet. The people working behind the desk were SO kind and helpful: there was an issue with my check-in, and they called Expedia to work it out. The rooms were small, but honestly not the smallest room I've seen a NYC hotel, and they were clean. We had a great view of the Empire State Building out of our window. Staying in Manhattan for the weekend as a single young woman means I take safety seriously. I felt very safe and secure in Hotel 31. The staff were very friendly and helpful! The room was clean! The entire hotel just had so much charm and character which I appreciated! The location is perfect! I walked around and explored every day and it only took me about 10-15 mins to get to the beautiful Bryant Park where NYC Library is located. And since you are in Manhattan there are awesome restaurants at every corner! I took a cab one night to meet a friend for drinks near MSG and it was maybe $8 ride with traffic. So I'm telling you this location is clutch! I booked 3 months in advance and got an incredible deal at only $100/night. I highly recommend this hotel for those traveling to the city on a budget. You can't go wrong! I have definitely made this my home away from home and will be back in the fall when I visit the city again. read more

The ancient, single elevator is small and really slow. (Adds to the charm of the place?) No Wi-Fi -- but there's a Starbucks a block away. Room was small (it's Manhattan) but spotless. I went with a room that came with its own private bath though for my next stay I'll save a couple more bucks and go with the shared bathroom. So, I almost knocked a star off my review right off the bat because they were gonna make us switch rooms after the first night, but luckily, they didn't. Phew! The hotel is small, but cute. Lots of character. VERY clean. It's near a subway stop (literally on the corner), loads of coffee shops and eateries nearby, and Penn Station is a 10-minute walk from the hotel- which is nice if you have to dart off to Joisey. This was the cheapest place my boyfriend and I could find to stay in Manhattan when we visited for the weekend this summer. It is a total gem. Wood paneled walls, 60s-style furnishings, one of those elevators that you have to pull the door closed to get it to go anywhere. The staff was friendly (in a strange way). The place was PERFECT for us. Minus one star for a few reasons - you have to share a bathroom with the floor - there are two, and they were always clean, so I didn't really mind. The internet is slow to nonexistent, so we had to go to an internet cafe to print our groupons. And there is no parking - this is probably typical, but parking my car at a garage around the corner added $120 to the total bill for the weekend. Just something to consider. We ran into a bad mixup at Park 79 hotel (the assistant had booked us for the right weekend in the WRONG MONTH!) so after a long trip to NYC we were stranded without a place to stay. Luckily, I remembered the name of Hotel 31 and called them with less than 45 minutes to find a place, get ready and go to an event. The man at the desk was polite and friendly, and said he'd hold a room for us until we arrived. We arrived via cab into the quaint lobby with the old fashioned elevator. It was a speedy transaction ($170 with taxes for a double semi-private-AKA dorm style bathrooms down the hall). We got our room which was basic and fine (you could smell a little smoke and the AC unit was for some reason still in the window mid October... so it could have been COLD if it wasn't such a nice night). Each room has a hairdryer, toiletries, a sink, clock, etc. The bed was a bit firm but clean. Bathrooms were squeaky clean and always empty. EXTREMELY QUIET place...which was great. Most importantly dropped our things and had time to get ready and go to our event, and had a place to stay afterward! I just got back from a 4 night stay at Hotel 31. I stayed with 2 other friends in a double/double with a private bath. Our room was great-especially for the price ($233/night including all the taxes,etc). The boutique style of the hotel reminded me of hotels in Paris & Rome. Our room was very clean and the shared bathrooms (for the other rooms) in the hallway always appeared to be meticulously maintained as well. The water pressure was decent, though the temperature did tend to fluctuate. The location is great. We were out late every night and never felt uncomfortable walking back to the hotel. It was an easy walk to the Grand Central terminal (there are closer subway stations) as well as the Empire State Bldg. We also walked to Bryant Park and Times Square rather frequently. You could walk to Central Park, but with the 6 line (subway) so close there was no reason to. I highly recommend this hotel and will be staying here on future trips. read more

I am giving this hotel 5 stars, based on the value I feel that I got for my money. The location is absolutely fantastic! Right smack in the middle of everything! I went the shared bathroom route... Bathrooms were always super clean, and I never had to wait for one. My only complaint was that the water temperature in the shower sometimes fluctuated. The room was small, but this was already expected. There was a brick wall right outside our window... This was perfectly fine with me, because it stayed nice and dark for sleeping, and we spent all of our waking hours exploring. I think it's probable that we could've requested a room with a view, but again, for as little as we paid, who cares! The room itself was very clean, no bed bugs. Heat and a/c worked great. Bed was comfortable enough. I will most certainly look to stay here again the next time I visit NYC, and will recommend to friends, as well! read more

This is a cute little European hotel. It seemed very quaint and old-fashioned and I liked that. My room was decently sized. I had to share a bathroom with the rest of the floor. Luckily there were 2 on each floor, so I never had to wait. Also, the bathrooms were always clean, so it made sharing it very easy. The front desk could be helpful... They let me check in hours early and a few of them had great suggestions for places nearby as well as excellent directions. However, a few were not so helpful. When I asked for a local bar to enjoy a hamburger and a beer, I got a bewildered look- and I was directed to a pizza place! Also, the same person was quite adamant about me taking a cab to LaGuardia, and he insisted it was $45. It was not. I spoke with a cabbie about it the day before, but he kept telling me I was wrong, and that he would "set everything up for me." Maybe it was an innocent mistake, but I thought it was a little shady. The hotel is very near subway stops, and I find it to be within walking distance of many things as well. I took several walks up to Times Square at night; it was very safe. Best of all is the price: $84/night on the weeknights and $94 on the weekends. Includes toiletries, a hairdryer, and cable TV. Perfect, especially for New York. read more

I liked this hotel quite a bit. The price was great, they had free WiFi, the location was good and the rooms and shares washrooms were quite clean. The only reason why I am not giving them 4 stars is that my toiletries that remained in the washroom and were not locked up in my bag when I left the hotel went "missing". I went on vacation with three male co-workers and I doubt my MAC makeup remover or Vichy face cream was taken by one of them or walked off the counter. Spring time in New York is unlike Spring anywhere else in the world. This is a good hotel. Location is great, just a block and a half from the 33rd St station. It is favorably positioned between two well-reviewed Sushi restaurants and there is a Pain Quotidian just down the street. Rooms are small and a bit 1960s décor but there is some charm. This place is a little gem in Manhattan. I was traveling alone and needed a cheaper place to stay at for just a few days. Hotel 31 was definitely what I was looking for. It was my first time in NY, so the front desk manager was really helpful in pointing me in the right direction on where to eat, and what sights to see. He gave great suggestions on effective routes to take via subway and bus. I got a single queen bed room that was a bit on the small side, but for 1 person it was perfect. The room had a working AC, TV, and sink. The bathroom, however, was located a little ways down the hall. I'm normally used to having the bathroom already inside the room, but I didn't find this to be an inconvenience at all. You basically share the shower/toilet with others on the same floor. There's more than 1 bathroom to each floor, so it's basically 2-3 rooms sharing the bathroom. I think there was only one time where I couldn't get in the toilet when I needed to... Overall a great place to stay if you're looking for a cheaper place. The location is great as well. Just a few minutes walk to the Empire State Building, Station 6 subway (which connects to a lot of the main stations), and Grand Central Terminal is a few blocks away. I think the price + location + service is what makes this hotel deserve 5/5 stars. read more
