Went there for the first time today and possibly the last time ever. First, the heating wasn't turned on in the middle of January. They had a tiny space heater by the door to heat up the WHOLE place. If you're charging $18+ for each dish the least they can do is turn on the heat. Second, the food was not good and that is an understatement. I got the crispy beef appetizer Thai salad with peanut dressing and a Chicken Pad Thai and the best thing on the table was the water. The beef was not crispy and tasted stale, I sent it back after two bites. The Salad was a bunch of lettuce leaves with one slice of cucumber cut in half and lettuce stalks. The dressing was good but I wasn't sure what to put it on. The chicken pad Thai was OK at best. The only good thing about this restaurant was our sweet server she was very helpful. Came to this cozy Thai place on NYE (Pre-COVID) and had a really good time. It was a busy night and they had a large party reservation so they let us know that we could sit and eat only if we finished within 90minutes. We agreed since we had plans dinner and didn't need to stay long. The restaurant is not really spacious our table was very close to the party next to us. It has a cozy, upscale rustic aesthetic. We ordered our new usual - the Pad Ka Pow with Chicken and I remember it being very spicy and flavorful. Portion size was a bit on the smaller side but overall good. We also got wings as an appetizer but I didn't really enjoy them since they weren't cooked all the way thru and I like my wings on the crispier side. I rate this 5 stars because the food was awesome. The waiters were very friendly they treated us so kindly and there is social distance if you sit in the front. Everyone was so happy to eat there including us. The dessert was great too with Thai ice tea ice creams. I really enjoyed my drink too it was a Thai ice tea lemonade. I went there to celebrate my birthday a few years ago. They actually are pretty good on Birthdays they sung happy birthday and gave me a big free ice cream. Than a couple years later we came back we decided it was so good that we had to write a report. Once again the Waiters were so nice to us. We are definitely going back. read more

The decor at SLA is beautiful. Each piece is thought out well and goes together beautifully. The service was also pleasant and attentive. The food is where I take off some stars. We ordered spring rolls for apps and while they were good they were so tiny for the price. I ordered a mild veggie and tofu pad Thai for my main lunch meal. The mild however is bland which typically is fine for me vs it being too spicy. However the noodles were dry and I would have wished for some sauce. The medium was spicy according to my husband who tolerates more spice than I do, so I'm torn between what to get if I return again. There was also a lot of eggshells in my dish. First time I let it pass because it's happened to all of us when cracking an egg. But then I got it a few more time and was off put by the crunchiness. They did however make it right and comp the meal but it's a shame I didn't even get to eat half my meal. Scallion pancakes best I ever had. Green curry is fresh & delicious. I have some criticism on the menu description of Tomyum soup, it is described as: "Clear lemon grass soup with mushroom,lemon grass, kaffir lime leaves, etc." It is not a clear broth soup as described, it is completely dark red & tomato tasting. Everything about this place was absolutely amazing! This is not your average weekday Thai takeout place. Location, ambiance, service, FOOD are all 10/10 stars! Friday evening was very busy but we were seated right away. I ordered the Pad Thai and it was delicious. Some previous reviews mentioned small portions but I couldn't even finish mine I was so full. I took the rest home with me. My dinner was fresh and I loved the combination of chicken, shrimp, and tofu. Great place, great people, great vibes... I will be coming back for sure. Hands down the best Thai in Montclair--and I've had them all. It's slightly procure than other places by an average of $5 BUT the taste is incomparable and so is the quality. They manage to give you the most delicious food and decent portions (don't expect a heap of noodles). I just saw that they're opening up on Valley Road where Uptown Bistro used to be. Not much more that can be added to the already great reviews other than to say this is truly the most authentic Thai I've had in all my travels. There were very few recognizable dishes as all the Americanized mainstays are happily missing. I went with the Thai sausage appetizer that came with sliced chilies, ginger, peanuts and cilantro. The sausage was lightly pan seared and very flavorful. The wife had the mussels in lemon grass broth which had a bright but deep flavor. We both wished there was some bread to soak up the broth but we ended up using the provided soup spoon to finish the tasty liquid. I tried the pork belly entrée which was fantastic, the pork was cooked perfectly and was of a very generous size. The spice was just as I requested and the curry was just the right consistency to mix with the brown rice. The wife had the seafood special which came with shrimp, squid and scallops. I would give 0 stars if I could. Order $18 chicken pad thai and $12 veg spring rolls. I have no issues paying a premium for high quality dishes. Spring rolls were meiocre at best and the pad thai was terrible. Completely bland a devoid of sauce or flavor. This restraunt is about 3 star in food quality. Where they go to 0 is customer service. Called back to let them know my pad thai was missing sauce. Had to explain for five minutes while lady on the phone kept explaining takeout is dry and if anything next time I should order it with more sauce. Why would I ever come back to eat here and order again when this was my experience. And there was no sauce look at the picture. I love this restaurant and believe it's the best Thai restaurant in town. The servers are kind and attentive. The food is authentic and delicious. The ambience is hip and nice. In fact, I love it so much that I decided to bring my friends out of town here for a special dinner. So why am I giving it four stars? When my friends and I arrived at the restaurant (we both have toddlers/babies), we were informed that there are no high chairs for the kiddos. I was hugely disappointed because I was really looking forward to eating here but had to go somewhere else. Not having high chairs available does not match the standard of SLA's wonderful food and service. More importantly Thai food is a family affair, so not being to able enjoy it with our toddlers really was heartbreaking. I would give SLA five stars if they provide highchairs for families in need, so we can all enjoy our time at the restaurant! read more

I have been a fan of this place for a while. But last nights dinner was a bit of a disappointment. They claim to do the food of Isan When we wet there a year ago the heat and balance was there. I wen there six months ago and it was good too This time I found they were using red bell peppers instead of the fiery Thai chilies. The heat was totally lacking and to me it felt the cooking had changed to suit the all white diners in the room. I went yesterday for the first time, no expectations. I was greeted by a very sunny and hospitable staff. I ordered their house tea, which was perfectly prepared and served in a lovely gilded tea cup. I had the $13 lunch special of Moo Ping (grilled pork), rice and salad, beautifully served in colorful tiffin boxes. The pork and accompanying sauce was great, as was the salad with peanut dressing. All fresh and flavorful. I had mango ice cream - also outstanding - 2 scoops lightly drizzled with a sort of custard sauce and sprinkled with house prepared mixed fruits in syrup as well as fresh strawberry and mint. I have been to Sla Thai several times with friends and they are always delighted by the food and atmosphere. In the warm weather, both in daylight and after dark, be sure to sit in the outdoor patio which doubles as an excellent viewpoint of the Upper Montclair scene. The wait staff will get to know you personally after a few visits. The vegetarian dishes are my favorites, especially the Tom Kha soup where I usually get the largest size available with tofu. The vegetarian appetizers are also excellent. Sometimes diners appear with dogs which adds to the entertainment. DO NOT RECOMMEND: If it were possible to give Sla Thai a score below zero, I would. I am still seething at the hideous customer service I received last night. I ordered a Pad Thai (with chicken) and I was dissatisfied with not only the taste and texture of the noodles, but the chicken had a weird odor. When I attempted to return the dish back to the kitchen, Justin "the Manager" on duty told me not only could he not exchange the dish for something else, but per their policy, I would still be charged. Therefore I paid $18 for meal I didn't consume. I've NEVER heard of such policy in a restaurant and quite honestly they should be embarrassed to treat customer dissatisfaction this way. I thought it might have been just that dish but I tasted all of my husband's choices and they, too, were tasteless. From beginning to end, it was a waste of our money. There are many other Thai restaurants that have excellent service and food for way much less money. The pandemic could not have caused this inferior quality nor this high pricing. Every time we go to the restaurant we are eager to try the specials because they are new dishes and we have already ordered every option off the everyday menu. Everything we have ever ordered is delicious! The servers and staff are so warm and friendly and really make your meal special. We called and asked if we could get a table in 20min and wanted to order right away so that food would be ready when we got there. We were told that it's not possible and that we could only make a reservation for the table. When we came in we ordered right away and said that we were very pressed for time. We ordered a soup and two pad thai dishes. The soup took 15min to be brought out and the dishes took 35min. We kept asking the waiters and every time they were saying "your food is coming" and minutes kept ticking away. What I noticed they were doing was serving to-go customers very fast. Easily the best Thai restaurant in the Montclair area, in a space that desperately needed one as Bloomfield's Brookside Thai is the only comparable spot in my opinion. Sla has a friendly and attentive staff and they typically are good at telling you the seasonal specials. Aside from their elevated and delicious classics like: Pad Thai, Pad Kemoa or Gang Kew Wan, what sets it apart is the high quality of the vegetable and meat. In one sentence, great food and excellent staff! They have a two page menu, not an unnecessary extra long menu, with each dish uniquely prepared and presented. We were a group of four and ordered two different appetizers, four different entrees and a dessert for the table. Each dish has its own unique look and taste. Loved all of them but when it comes to my favorite, chicken and shrimp fried rice, pad kemoa with chicken and shrimp and kanom jeeb (dumpling) won. Dining area is limited and seating arrangement is tight, tables are very close to each other. Another downside is that they don't have kids highchairs. However, their amazing staff really made up to that. They were so nice, they were apologizing and the lady even offered if we'd like to have a small chair for our toddler. On top of that she herself brought water in a kids disposable glass, which our toddler liked it a lot. He got occupied for some time playing with that glass. Such a nice gesture! Its a BYOB, bring your own drinks that goes well with their delicious food.
