I cannot recommend this place enough. Absolutely adorable spot, perfect for lunch with friends, dinner date or a solo dining. The staff is so sweet and attentive, very helpful on what to pick and what's their fav. Every dish was delicious, and authentic. The baby back ribs are definitely a must order, perfect. The mussels were simple and delicious. Papaya salad was refreshing. Pad Thai was not too sweet and noodles perfectly cooked. The fried fish, flaky and flavorful. The Bamee Hang I've never had before but loved the big pieces of real crab and crispy pork. The Thai iced tea was so refreshing and perfect pairing with my meal. And to finish it off, the sticky rice and mango ice cream was the right note to end on. The ice cream was not too sweet and love the cold and warm match with the rice. Will be back for sure!
I visited on a Friday evening with a close friend who works at the nearby university and had previously enjoyed lunch here, so we were excited to return for dinner. I made a 6:00 pm reservation for two conveniently through Yelp, and we were seated promptly. We started with hot tea and mango juice, then ordered pad kee mao and pad see ew for our entrees. Unfortunately, the mango sticky rice had sold out, so we opted for the ice cream (two scoops) served with sticky rice instead. While the interior decor and ambiance were warm, cozy, and inviting, the food and service did not meet our expectations. The flavors of both entrees were fairly average, and portions were noticeably smaller compared to other Thai restaurants we've tried in northern New Jersey. I found myself adding chili flakes to bring more flavor to my dish, while my friend felt the pad see ew leaned overly sweet. For dessert, we were told both scoops had to be the same ice cream flavor. The sticky rice itself was tinted a very bright green color, which tasted fine but was visually unappealing and felt unnecessary. Service became uncomfortable midway through the meal. While we were still actively eating, our waitress asked if we wanted everything wrapped to go. Later, around 7:50 pm -- before we had even paid the check -- another server informed us we needed to leave because another reservation was waiting. When I asked about table timing, we were told there is a strict 1 hour and 15 minute limit, which we had exceeded. Having dined extensively in northern NJ, we're accustomed to restaurants allowing enough time to order, eat, and enjoy the experience without feeling rushed. Unfortunately, the focus here felt more on rapid table turnover than guest comfort. As a result, we left feeling disappointed and do not plan to return.
Great spot! We had a solid meal - we ordered Tom Kha soup and wings to start - very good. Perfect to share. We then each ordered a noodle dish - pad Thai and pad see ew - we enjoyed!! We also sat at high tops without a resy and loved the view - staff was overwhelmed as it was packed but we didn't mind! Great vibes! Would recommend!
Nice and cute restaurant! Very colorful decor! The service was great! Our waiter was nice and helpful! There's a nice vegan selection. I ordered the tofu steak and cauliflower tempura. I loved the cauliflower and how crunchy the breading was. The tofu was ok. The tofu itself lacked a little flavor but with the soup and ginger together it tasted good!
When my fiancée's Thai food craving hit, we decided to break from our usual routine and try SLA Thai for the first time. Ordering take out through DoorDash, we went with two noodle dishes and a classic dessert to get a proper taste of their offerings. My fiancée chose the Pad Kemao, a flat noodle dish with shrimp and eggplant. While she found it satisfying with well-cooked shrimp and pleasant eggplant texture, it didn't quite reach the heights of her favorite version from Papa Thai in Bloomfield. The flavors were good but somewhat muted compared to what she's used to, decent but not remarkable enough to dethrone her go-to spot. I opted for the Pad See Ew and was pleasantly surprised despite an initial strong fishy aroma when opening the container (likely from oyster or fish sauce). The first bite won me over with fresh, perfectly chewy noodles and that great balance of savory and slightly sweet flavors Thai food does so well. My only real complaint was the complete lack of spice, a real miss since DoorDash didn't offer spice level customization for this order. Next time I'll definitely call ahead to request some heat, because what's Thai food without a little kick? For dessert we tried the Sweet Mango Sticky Rice, which my mango-loving fiancée was especially excited about. The coconut flavor in the rice was spot on, rich and aromatic. Although some of the rice was disappointingly dry and hard, like it had been sitting for a while. The saving grace was the perfectly ripe, sweet mango that she devoured happily. I found it a bit too sugary for my taste, but then again, I'm not the mango enthusiast in this relationship. It's a dessert that would satisfy anyone with a serious sweet tooth, assuming the rice comes out fresher next time. Overall, SLA Thai delivered a solid takeout experience with some clear highlights (that Pad See Ew in particular) and a few areas for improvement. The noodle dishes showed good technique with fresh ingredients, though the inability to specify spice levels through DoorDash was frustrating. While it didn't surpass our favorite Thai spot, it's definitely a place we'd order from again - though next time I'll be calling ahead to request spice adjustments and maybe crossing my fingers for better-executed sticky rice. For a first try, it was promising enough that we'd give them another shot when we're in the mood for something different.
Elevated ambience in an excellent uptown Montclair location. Service is well-paced: prompt but not intrusive. A strong mix of authentic Thai dishes with some fun fusion elements. Added bonus: we went with another couple, one of whom has a severe shellfish allergy, and she could eat almost everything on the menu. No shellfish is fried in the same oil as other items, which was reassuring. We tried about seven dishes and everything was solid, though there wasn't a true standout. The thing I'd return for most is actually the Thai iced tea, which was some of the best I've ever had. Overall, it's an excellent addition to the Montclair food scene. While it won't make our regular rotation, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone in the area who loves Thai food as it's probably my favorite in Essex County.
The restaurant is beautifully decorated and provides a cozy experience even groups of 8. The food is beyond delicious my favorites were the mussels, khoa soi, and short ribs( must have). I really enjoyed the mango mojito it was a great addition to the meal. The servers were nice and attentive. I would definitely come back.

From the refreshing crunch of the papaya salad to the bold, lime-forward depth of their tom yum soup, every dish was crafted with care and packed with authentic Thai flavors. The Pad Thai delivered the perfect balance of sweet, tangy, and nutty goodness, while the Pad See Ew stole the show. Thick, chewy noodles coated in a smoky, savory-sweet sauce mingled beautifully with tender chicken and fresh, crisp broccoli. It was comfort food at its finest--so good, I purposely saved some to enjoy at home later. SLA isn't just one of the best Thai restaurants in NJ--it's an experience. Fresh, authentic dishes, attentive service, great prices, and a fun atmosphere make it a standout in Montclair. With parking conveniently nearby, this spot is a no-brainer. If you're looking for Thai food that's truly a cut above, SLA is it. From start to finish, every bite left us wanting more. 11/10--highly recommend!

Yesterday, I went for lunch and thoroughly enjoyed my experience. I was the only person in the restaurant so it was quiet, clean and my food came out quickly. The Thai iced coffee is amazing! It has a natural sweetness that I really appreciated. My pad see ew with beef was so flavorful and delicious. The lunch soup was also tasty. I would 100 percent go back for lunch again. Visiting Montclair on a sunny Mother's Day, we accidentally drove by Sla and saw their alleyway outside seating. Reminiscent of my time in Thai alleyways and delicious street food, we had to stop for lunch. The place is BYOB just FYI with a nearby cozy liquor and wine store. Service was extremely friendly and attentive. We started off with the truffle spring rolls, nice and crispy. For entrees we got the fried whole fish and short ribs Maasaman. Great Thai food in a beautiful atmosphere. I opted for the lunch special. I appreciate that the restaurant offered vegan options. I had the vegetable dumplings. They were delicious. The dipping sauce was slightly sweet. The soup was a little spicy with a tasty lemongrass flavor. I had tofu with vegetables and brown rice. The Ube Lovers beverage was delicious. Beautiful decor/ambiance and even better food. Love all the traditional, colorful, plating here and the food tasted just ad vibrant. I've heard a lot about this place but never truly believed there would a thai restaurant head and shoulders above the average rest. Well... this is that place. The Duck Salad was one of the most flavorful, tasty dishes ive ever had regardless of cuisine. I've never had duck presented that way (like thick slabs of bacon) and now I'll never think of duck the same! Life changing. The Tom Kha soup was also super warm and refreshing at the same time. And finally the Pad Thai! Not too sweet not too spicy it was perfect and the noodles were perfectly cooked. An absolute surprise of a dinner and this place instantly shoots up to the top of my list of restaurants in Montclair!!!! read more

Excellent quality Thai restaurant in Upper Montclair. The ambiance inside is unique and cozy, perfect for a date or for dinner with a small group of friends. I like to order from their lunch menu which is always a treat when I'm working from home. My favorite is the SLA Lunch Combo with wings, sticky rice, tom yum soup, and papaya salad. The soup has chicken in it but you might be able to ask for a veggie version. I order the wings spicy and that's good spice for me, just be careful if you order the TKO version because wow that is incredibly spicy. Their curry puffs (not pictured) are also one of my favorite Thai curry puffs that I've ever tried. So many flavors in each dish! The staff always super sweet when I go in for pickup and they have the food prepared quickly. read more

This was my second time eating here but first time in the new location. They expanded nearby and even have a cute outdoor alley for seating! I was exited to see more menu options to choose from as well. For the appetizer my date and I shared the chicken wings and the pork belly. I thought they were both pretty good, especially the pork. The wings could have been crisp but they had a great flavor. For my entree I had such a hard time deciding as everything sounded so good. I ultimately went with the green curry with shrimp. It was delicious! The shrimp portion was quite nice and they were large. The broth was very flavorful. We had very friendly servers! I would recommend coming here if in the area. read more
Came here for a nice outdoor dinner after passing by many times and seeing the outdoor seating always filled up. Even now with indoor back open, there is a wait. I really liked Sla but after getting through the wait (which wasn't too bad) things just whittled down the score here for me. I was kinda let down by the apps. The Gai Tod (wings) was just alright. Nice presentation and comes with 5 wings. They were average though, the chili flavor didn't hit me, like other wings apps I've had Asian or otherwise. The Moo Yang - sliced pork belly was better. Some slices were a bit fatty, but I give the benefit of the doubt there since it's to be expected. I got that Pad see ew and this is where things dip a bit more. I was offered egg but it didn't have it. The food took a bit long to come out and didn't want to continue to wait so I went on without it. The portion was noticeably smaller than what I expected and I only got 3 pieces of shrimp. Yeah I counted. Though they were a decent size, that was a skimp on the shrimp. A no-no. Again, nice presentation and plate ware though. This all of course comes at a slightly higher price than my usual go to Thai spot. I don't want to say it's this a bad spot. The entrée was lacking, but good. The service was great and the setting is very nice. This is how it went down though and being in Upper Montclair you're definitely gonna be held to a high standard. read more

Had a lovely Saturday lunch at SLA while needing to run errands in Montclair. Great ambiance and attentive service. MR ordered from the brunch menu and got their congee-like dish which was so savory. I went for the Kho Soi, a yellow-curry based soup with noodles and the most delicious braised chicken. I definitely won the ordering competition today. This dish warms you from the inside-out, with a slight edge of spice from the curry. The chicken and noodles are cooked to perfection. Dishes felt a tad overpriced, but I chalk it up to the overhead costs of running a restaurant in Montclair on Valley. read more

The ambiance of this place is super cute but the food is pretty overpriced and not that good. You can definitely get better thai food for cheaper anywhere else. For an appetizer, we got the calamari and the sauce they put on it was a weird plum flavor. It made the dish pretty inedible and we couldn't even finish it. For entrees, we got the pad Thai and one the currys. They both really lacked flavor and were pretty disappointing. My thai food takeout tastes better than this. read more

Came with my boyfriend on a Sunday during brunch and loved everything that we ordered. The service was great, the staff came and checked up on us multiple times. Most importantly I really liked that they changed our plates after appetizers so we can have a fresh one for the main course. This location offers indoor and outdoor dining both socially distanced. We decided to sit inside because it looked less crowded. On a warm day outdoor seating would be really nice. The decorations were beautiful and we were able to take some really cute pictures. We started with 2 Thai iced tea. For appetizers we got the Kanom jeeb, which is a Thai steamed chicken and shrimp dumplings, and the curry puffs. Both apps were delicious and had really nice plating. We ordered the Pad Thai with chicken and Pad Kemoa with chicken. I enjoyed the Kemoa more as it was spicy and flavorful. My boyfriend really liked the Pad Thai. Then for dessert we got the sticky rice with ube ice cream. We enjoyed everything that came out and will be returning! read more
Delicious! Highly recommend making reservations. Small cozy restaurant was fully booked when we got there. It's BYOB which means they really focus on their food and it did not disappoint. We started with the wings and they were delicious. Perfect combination of flavor and a little spice and we also shared a house salad. It was a basic salad with lettuce cucumbers and a couple of grape tomatoes, so not your usual Thai salad but the dressing saved it. I had the whole fried fish and it was really amazing. Lots of flavored with a nice citrus sauce on the bottom and sliced grape tomatoes and cucumbers decorating the fish. I will definitely be getting this dish again. My husband had the pad kee mao and it was also very good. We ended the evening with a coconut flan which was very tasty. Great evening out. Easy to find parking on the street. The only thing is the tables are really crammed together so you can hear your neighbors conversation. read more

I wanted to love this place!! ambiance is beautiful ! the staff was so friendly and warm. they give you complimentary cookies when you sit. food comes out fresh and hot. we have the dumplings and spring rolls .. I loved the spring rolls .. the dumplings were very dry and not much taste.. I got the popular pad thai with chicken and my partner got the pork belly. when I tell you I RARELY dislike something so much I don't eat some .. I took one bite and it was absolutely awful ! the only thing I can compare it too is what dry cat food smells like. absolutely terrible.. I even took a second bite thinking maybe it was just a bad bite.. nope, my body would not let me even swallow it! it came right out. and that has never happened to me. my partner enjoyed his pork belly. he took a bite of mine and said he can see what I mean when I compared it to the smell of dry cat food.. and I feeel so terrible for even writing this kind of review. i'm sorry but just not for me. read more
Tasty thai food, friendly service and nice atmosphere We came here for lunch on a Sunday and were pleasantly surprised that it wasn't crowded but had some customers. They offered limited indoor (5 tables) and outdoor dining (both on the sidewalk and in the alley and had heating lamps in the latter). The menu wasn't as extensive as some thai places (e.g., they only had one fried rice dish on the brunch menu) but there was the usual pad noodle dishes, apps and soups. The brunch menu also had a lot to be desired. Off the brunch menu, we ordered the Khoa Tdom Moo Krob, which had a perfectly cooked egg atop a bed of rice, with Chinese vegetables and pork belly...it was delicious, though I wouldn't have minded a bit crispier pork belly. The crab fried rice was also tasty, though it could have had more crab meat. Both entrees were $15, with a small salad. They do seem to take care of their menu. The service was great, attentive and sweet. They accommodated our move from outdoor to indoor without hesitation or eye rolls. Since thai places do seem to have similar tasting foods, the service and environment put this one over the top for me. read more

This is our go to Thai spot around the area! Their Thai iced tea is good to order with the food. We ordered the curry puffs which were delicious. It was made perfectly so that it has a bit of a crunch but not to fluffy that it would crumble everywhere. The sauce with it was delicious! We also ordered the mussels which was refreshing. Wish there were more in the bowl. I ordered the pad see ew, very flavorful and I got it with chicken. He ordered the massaman beef curry and it was tasty but unfortunately it was more on the smaller side. Would recommend this place still! read more

Nice change of pace for Thai for us, some of the dishes were very traditional and some of them were definitely updated versions of the classics. What was a bit of a shock was the check, I don't think I have paid as much for Thai food as I did for this meal, but I guess that's the suburbs for you. No complaints in terms of quality, skip the Thai spring rolls as they were rather small and not much flavor. read more
Visited SLA Thai for dinner on a Thursday. It's a smaller restaurant, with Edison bulbs, wooden furnishings, and the typical types of decor you'd find in the hip/trendy/gentrified new restaurant starter pack. Service was good. For an appetizer, I got the chive pancakes, which weren't really what I was expecting. They were more like the shrimp toast i would get at other Thai places, but they weren't bad. My benchmark Thai dish is pad kee mao, aka drunken noodles. They had it listed as pad kemoa. They asked how spicy I wanted it, which is good. I asked them to make it very spicy, and they delivered. It was the first time i got eggplant in my pad kee mao. Overall, the food was good, but $17 for an order of pad kee mao is significantly more expensive than average. read more

The service was amazing. All of the staff were kind and welcoming. The emphasis on good lighting really showed throughout the restaurant and took me away from being in Upper Montclair. The Sai Ua was yummy and reminds me of an old friend's Laotian's sausages. The Truffle rolls were a perfect appetizer. The coconut sticky rice with the noodles was a suprise! So savory and sweet. For our main dish, we had the pad thai and I honestly felt like I was in an auntie's kitchen. The dessert was a classic coconut sticky rice with mangos, lychee, strawberry and pineapple! Their mojitos taste so wonderful and complimented each meal. Did I mention there was a special plate for each meal? I loved dining at Sla and look forward to visiting again! read more

This is my favorite restaurant in Montclair and have been 5+ times and have never been disappointed. I'm so confused by some of the reviews. I'm guessing those folks are just getting pad Thai which full disclosure I have not tried because there are so many amazing and interesting items in the menu. During this last visit my husband got the duck noodles which we've had several times. It is fresh and rich at the same time with a super flavorful broth but the duck skin maintains its crispiness. I got the sea bass which was in a broth reminiscent of French onion soup with strong Thai flavors. This fish was cooked perfectly and each bite put a smile on my face. I highly recommend upgrading your dishes to come with the sticky rice. It's so worth the upcharge. The ambiance is so lovely. I love the wallpaper and mismatched disheS. Lunch specials are embarrassing. For $17, I got a doxen tiny strips of barely edible crispy beef and a miniature salad - not even any rice. UPDATE: The restaurant owner called to apologize and refunded my money. Given the overall positive reviews the restaurant gets, I imagine my experience was an anomaly, and I'll give the place another try. read more

Located in the heart of Mont Clair, as the name suggests Sla Thai is a Thai restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating. If you are planning on attending over the weekend, make sure you reserve in advance. We chose sitting out and the place was lit with fairy lights and contemporary artifacts. The cutlery is also too cute! It is a BYOB place. There is a liquor shop near by but closes early. The place is slightly expensive for the portion size provided. The only reason I gave it 3 stars is because I found the food extremely oily. I liked the taste but the oil kept lingering in my mouth for quite a while Vegetable Steamed Dumplings - filled with shredded veggies this comes with a sweet soy sauce. Nice starter. Gui Chat - Gui Chai are chive pancakes. Filled with greens, they were deep fried. I would probably skip this next time only because of the amount of oil. The pancakes taste well but it has a strong after taste of the fried oil. It seems as if the oil wasn't drained once out of the fryer and hence I didn't enjoy it much Pad Kemao - I ordered vegetarian Pad Kemao. Hence meat was replaced with fried tofu. I did enjoy my meal. It was perfect after having one dumpling and one pancake. It has sautéed onions peppers and fresh basil. I loved the spicy noodles but was slightly disappointed with the oil again. read more
