I was in Augusta for business early in the morning and was looking for fresh bread to take back to a friend in Portland and after a quick check on YELP, found Slates Bakery. Once I got there, I realized this was a small and cozy addition to the excellent Slates restaurant, which I had been to before. This very small, in fact tiny bakery is filled with fresh breads, including bagels and lots of excellent looking baked goods. I started with a loaf of Anadama bread and an onion bagel and then looked into a glass cooler and noticed slices of pumpkin cream cheese roll and then noticed that they were selling the end slice, which looked funky but was completely delicious for $1.50! After a brief conversation with the helpful and informative woman behind the counter, I learned that SB often offers end cuts and pieces of their baked goods for $1.50. I stopped here after lunch, looking to satisfy my sweet tooth. They have a LOT of goodies to choose from. I got a sugar cookie, chocolate chip cookie and oatmeal blueberry cookie (which was definitely the best). The cookies were chewy and seemed to be homemade. Outside they had a lot of small tabels and seating. Due to COVID they are only letting one customer/group be in the store at a time. Which is probably how much can fit in there comfortably anways. They have a decent selection of cold drinks to choose from. In terms of coffee options I only saw coffee/iced coffee. If you are looking for coffee probably go elsewhere in town but if your main goal is desserts...definitely try this place out. read more

I have never had anything from Slates Bakery that was not wonderful, and I never leave without a cookie, but we specifically visit for their variety of breads. You can find Slates Restaurant and Bakery on Yelp, too, but this is just for my experience with the bakery. I called mid-afternoon to see what pies were available before making a disappointing trip out. They did not have what I wanted, so I ordered a large blueberry double crust and a small apple. I was going to pick them up at 10 the next day since they said any earlier they would not be cooled down from the oven. Got there about 10:15 and both had yet to come out of the oven. They were ready, though, and I got to drive back to our vacation rental with the boxes open and smells of anticipation of when they were ready to chow down on. It took until after dinner for our pie dessert but it was well worth it! The apple pie was better than the blueberry but both had great flavor. Maine blueberries just kick ass. The crusts were a little difficult to get through but they had the right amount of sugar topping. My wife heated hers up...wtf? I can't do that. These pies are better cold. The small serves about four with everyone getting a quarter which is small. The large serves about eight? We had leftovers to go with the blueberry ice cream (not from Slates). Can't advise on any lunch/dinner meals here, but all the baked goods looked and smelled great. The pies I got were worth the $25. read more

This is a really cute and quirky bakery. They allow locals to advertise on their walls. It really give them a neighborhood feel.My friends and I each got a pastry and a coffee and sampled each other's goodies. The pumpkin cream cheese turnover was a new idea to me for the fall season. It tastes just like a pumpkin pie with a super flaky crust. The croissants looked dry to me, but once toasted, tasted delicious. For me, the best one was the cinnamon walnut roll. I just wish she would have suggested warming it up. I thought it might have tasted amazing after being popped into the microwave for a few, but the microwave was hiding under the bread loaves instead of sitting over by the toaster. Delicious baked goods tucked away in a charming little bakery. My boyfriend's family lives near here, and whenever we set out for a day of rafting or hiking, this is our stop along the way for breakfast. I've tried their muffins and their breakfast sandwiches. The muffins are great--crunchy on top, tender on the inside. The breakfast sandwiches are your standard fare, but that might be because I've only had the ones on English muffins. For the bacon and ham ones, I wish there was a little more meat to up the meat-to-bread ratio, but it's still good eats in the morning. Prices are reasonable. Slates had been hyped up so much to me that when I finally went, I felt terribly underwhelmed. The decor is... loud and craft-fairish. The music is all older, Billy Joel, The Mamas andd the Papas. Overall, the ambiance felt like a 40 year old trying to hang on to youth while reliving the '60's. I didn't feel comfortable. It all seemed pretentious. Our waitress tried really hard to force eye contact with me. The food was okay. I ordered a crab pizza off the specials which was tasty but the slices were cut way too large. My boyfriend ordered the chicken burrito off the regular menu whic wasn't very burrito like. It was more like a chicken wrap that was heated. Not a very pleasant texture. I get that this place is a fixture in Hallowell, but I'd much rather frequent the Liberal Cup instead. read more

Slates Bakery always has excellent baked goods. There are the classics like the Chocolate cake and their brunch breads. Of course you can get one of their delicious loaves of bread. My favorites are the cinnamon raisin and the rye. Slates deli is also located in the same location. good for breakfast any time and terrific sandwiches. Decent Food, but my night was ruined on a trip to the men's room, where i found a soupy mess in the toilet, which was broken. When I asked the staff to fix it, they bluntly responded that they "couldn't fix it because they were too busy." On top of that, the urinal was tiny, and I had to crouch down to use it, which was not easy. I recommend urinating right before you enter Slate's, seeing that they only have one functioning toilet, which is meant for six-year-olds. read more

I needed to find a casual coffee meeting place and this was perfect, especially in the summer. There were lots of delicious-looking options, including gluten-free options. The iced coffee was good. The setting is very casual and fun, the outdoor seating in the shade was lovely and away from the street. I drove into Hallowell and hadn't been before. It was a little hard to tell how it worked with the bakery and what time it was open from their website, but their facebook messaging was very helpful and gave me the information I needed. I'm also wondering if there is indoor seating in the winter because this looks like a place I would return to with friends for a coffee and a muffin. read more

Unfortunately the restaurant was closed (I believe for renovations?) when I was there but I cannot rave enough about the bakery. We stopped in while showing some family around Hallowell. We each got coffee, good but nothing too special, and a bakery item. We each tried a bit of everyone else's because we couldn't believe they were all so good. I got a frosted sugar cookie that was SO delicious, I have yet to find another that competes. My fiancé got a lemon bar, and there were also some various cakes to try (pumpkin cream cheese was amazing). I highly recommend this place to anyone with a sweet tooth! read more

They serve great food, ya know the fancy pancakes with fruit, every type of egg combination, locks etc The food is a 90, the service is SO slow and on sundays you could be in there for 2 hours or more just for breakfast. I only go because family members love this place and the food is good. I've been here many times when my water glass started to build up condensation. The long waits really ruin it for me. The dinner is ok but their are better options in Hallowell. This really is the best breakfast place in Kennebec County as far as food quality and taste. read more

We drop by the bakery for bread, muffins, and the occasional treat; we stop in for lunch at the deli (love the huevos rancheros!); and we'll hit the restaurant for a special night out. SO HAPPY Slates was open Easter Sunday!! My boyfriend and I needed to pick up a last minute dessert to take to dinner, and we were able to snag a double crust blueberry pie straight out of the oven. It was absolutely exploding with real Maine blueberries and totally delicious. This isn't your average bakery. Now that they are serving breakfasts and have expanded their lunch items it is a great place to grab a quick meal to either eat in or take out. The funky painted tables and original (owner painted) walls will bring a smile to even the grumpiest face. There are regulars, like my husband and I, who stop by just for coffee on most days and other days grab a quick lunch.
