a basket of bagels and doughnuts

I was in Augusta for business early in the morning and was looking for fresh bread to take back to a friend in Portland and after a quick check on YELP, found Slates Bakery. Once I got there, I realized this was a small and cozy addition to the excellent Slates restaurant, which I had been to before. This very small, in fact tiny bakery is filled with fresh breads, including bagels and lots of excellent looking baked goods. I started with a loaf of Anadama bread and an onion bagel and then looked into a glass cooler and noticed slices of pumpkin cream cheese roll and then noticed that they were selling the end slice, which looked funky but was completely delicious for $1.50! After a brief conversation with the helpful and informative woman behind the counter, I learned that SB often offers end cuts and pieces of their baked goods for $1.50. How awesome is that!!!

Sweet spot for a quick snack. The bakery is tiiiny- only a few people can fit at a time. We went to grab a few cookies and we snagged a spot in the cute cove between the bakery and the restaurant. Perfect for a reading treat

I stopped here after lunch, looking to satisfy my sweet tooth. They have a LOT of goodies to choose from. I got a sugar cookie, chocolate chip cookie and oatmeal blueberry cookie (which was definitely the best). The cookies were chewy and seemed to be homemade. Outside they had a lot of small tabels and seating. Due to COVID they are only letting one customer/group be in the store at a time. Which is probably how much can fit in there comfortably anways. They have a decent selection of cold drinks to choose from. In terms of coffee options I only saw coffee/iced coffee. If you are looking for coffee probably go elsewhere in town but if your main goal is desserts...definitely try this place out.

We opted for the freshly baked ham and cheese croissants they were still hot! They were insanely buttery. I think the bake on the croissants is a bit light and could be in the oven a bit longer. There are no wrong choices here as long as you like buttery, melt-in-your-mouth pastry. 'It's like eating a cloud'' says wife. They rotate flavors daily with something new to try and they label the choices, usually a dozen or so in the display case. A nice touch that keeps the line moving. Baguettes and sourdough boules are available most days. They also have tasty looking breakfast sandwiches sometimes made from croissants. Favorites include almond croissant, lemon cruffin (croissant-muffin hybrid), plum custard and walnut rye bread. The bakery opened in May after much anticipation from the locals. Located in a granite block building in the space of former Dom's barbershop, a long-time Hallowell fixture. It gets very busy on Saturdays with a line forming down street. The line moves quickly though and it's worth the weight. Cordon Bleu-trained owner/baker is from Ukraine.
