The lent cod fish fry continues. One more week to go. So today we went to Slick Willies in South Milwaukee. If you want to go, get there before 4 or after 8. The bartender said between those times it is usually standing room only. So, lunch is a good time to go. I wanted to get the sampler plate, but I want to be consistent and I am doing cod plates for this lent tour. The hubs had the slick willies burger and said it was fantastic, had bark on it like he likes. The fish was okay, you could taste the grease in the batter. In saying this, I am a bit picky with a fish fry, I don't want it to taste greasy or fishy. When I put the fork into the fish, the batter broke away from the fish, bummer but not a deal breaker. It was ye an operation they have worked on and have it running like a fine engine. The staff was so friendly and they only do cash so come prepared. Slick Willie's has been on my burger bucket list since I saw Steven T's amazing looking photo of their double cheeseburger from 2018. I tried to stop once before, but the place was packed with not a single seat available, so I left empty-handed. This time I got there early enough that a crowd wasn't a problem. I ordered a double cheeseburger with just American cheese, substituted the chips for fries, and ordered grilled wings with BBQ sauce. The wings were ok. They had good grill marks on them and were pretty average size. The BBQ sauce was generic and sort of tasted like Sweet Baby Ray's (not a criticism, just an observation). I wouldn't be opposed to getting them again and try a different sauce. I'm grateful that there was salt, pepper, and ketchup on the table cause the fries were incredibly bland. I wish that I hadn't substituted the chips for them. It's always nice when an item on your bucket list lives up the expectations. The burger was HUGE and seasoned fantastically. I didn't think to ask if it could be cooked medium and I wasn't asked how I wanted it cooked, so it came out well done, but wasn't dry like so many well done burgers tend to be. I don't have a ranked list for my favorite burgers in the area, but if I did theirs would be very high on it. Be aware, Slick Willie's is cash only. I had cash on me so I didn't need to look for an ATM, thus I don't know if they have one on site. The prices are very reasonable so you may not need a ton of cash. read more

We went here for Friday night fish fry expecting bar food. Wow were we wrong. This place waaay exceeded our expectations! Don't get me wrong, Slick Willie's is indeed a bar but they serve up great food. I'll start with the chicken wings - which were phenomenal. Quite possibly the best wings I've had. They grill the wings ensuring that they are crunchy and super flavorful, not rubbery or fatty. Omg they were so good! The fried cod was hand battered and not oily at all, extra crunchy too - our table loved it! We also had the fried shrimp which were ok but the cod was the star for sure. The service took forever and you have to fight your way to the bar to order but the food is so good, who cares? It's a corner bar so don't expect a white table cloth. The drinks were good and the food was unexpected. I like it when I'm surprised and Slick Willie's food was a surprise. We'll be back. read more

This isn't a big place but it's usually busy and we know why. Great bartenders, friendly patrons, and really surprisingly quality food. For a place that has the look of a power drinking dive bar, behind the bar is a grill performing magic. Great burgers, old school steak dinners, and Friday Fish fry's. Add in salad bar and how could you ask for more? I'll tell you, great drinks, cheap beers, and rounds of drinks from friendly patrons. I was looking to do my bar beer burger lunch thing because those can be surprisingly good when you go to another neighborhood. The place is your typical neighborhood corner old school dive bar looking place. The inside is typical dive bar with bar/grill on one wall and hi tables on the opposite with a pool table in the back. They have daily specials and Sunday was all you can eat breakfast buffet for $6.99 and an $8.99 double cheeseburger with frys for example. The menu was typical bar food with a bacon cheeseburger and chips/pickle for $6 which I ordered, the bar girl talked me into the double cheeseburger with frys/pickle special for $3 more which I said why not with out of not thinking. There is no taps for beer but there is an ok can/bottle selection. Says their open for breakfast ?. Once again I asked if I could get a rare burger and I was told yes, we will do our best. When the oversized basket hit the table that's when I knew I just Fuc#ed up, it's two thick char grilled 1/3 lb patty's with three slice of cheddar cheese and it's big, real big. No skimping on the chilled lettuce, tomato and raw onion either. The soft kaiser roll never had a chance with the two extra juicy rare 1/3 lb patty's and immediately surrendered, juice was dripping everywhere and if they were cooked well the bun would have held. The meat was tasty with a char flavor and as juicy as a burger can possibly be, this has to be fresh meat because frozen doesn't juice like that. The pickle was nicely chilled just like the toppings, nicely done with the contrast of the hot meat. The frys were horrible and like eating dry styrofoam, not a deal breaker for me because im all about the burger. Wow I'm impressed with the fresh quality of the juicy burger and I hope this is the norm and not the exception because this little dive bar is doing burgers well, even my rare request because anything more starts to cook the juices out. If this was my neighborhood, this would be my go to burger place for sure, well done Slick Willie's. read more

Yes...and...yes...can I have more fish? This is a cash only place that serves an amazing fish fry. Don't tell people that they have salad and soup bar in back that you get for free with your meal. I guess it's super secret because someone in our party had been here prior and never knew it. Seriously the value proposition is great because for $11 you get four pieces of fish along with a side....plus said soup and salad bar. The fish is amazing but I would not choose the potato pancakes because they are a little bland. Otherwise everything else is solid so definitely add them to your fry list but be prepared to wait a little for a table because this place can get jamming! read more

Love this place! I stopped in with my dad summer before last for a beer and we loved it. We were supposed to make it back for lunch this summer but he passed away Aug 29,2023 before we were able to. My boyfriend and I stopped there before we spread my dad's ashes with my family. We love sitting at the bar. It's a weird feeling that the person next to you doesn't know what your going through at the time when you are feeling devastated. The bartender, music, and happy smiles around me helped me feel better that day. Now back in CT and can't wait to visit when I go back. read more

What a great little neighborhood bar! Kudos to the kick-a** bartender there on Monday night running the place. She was amazing serving everyone drinks while preparing everyone's dinner! They offer a great variety of dinner options. They offer daily specials. They even do a Sunday brunch buffet. The outdoor/backyard space is enormous in comparison to the bar size. It looks like a great place to sit and have a drink and great food. There is space for bands to play along with an outdoor bar. My friends and I all ordered burgers. First time coming here and I'm not sure if I'd come back. The staff service was terrible! It's a small dive bar and when we first entered we weren't greeted, and when we approached the bar to order a drink the bartender made eye contact and didn't acknowledge us. No "hello", "hi", "welcome, I'll be right with you" -nothing. When she did serve us it was as if we were bothering her. No smile and just a negative attitude. The woman next to me ordered a Bloody Mary and I decided to try one too. She asked what chaser she'd like with it, and when I ordered she just poured me the remainder of someone else's chaser for my chaser not giving me an option too. I ordered the cheesesteak and even when placing my order I wasn't offered the options that were on the menu that I should have with that order and accompanied by rudeness. If you wanted your food to go you'd go to the back where the lottery machines were and they were randomly placed on a table. The food was good but sadly the staff service was extremely rude and not welcoming. When we went to pay I was informed they didn't take card and it was only cash. went here for Saint Paddy's Day '23. absolute best fish fry of my life. they had a station making it out in the open which was cool to watch. typically I don't even like coleslaw, but somehow Slick Willie's had me craving MORE of it. crowded & loud, yes. a couple dudes nearly getting into a fight, also yes. but I make it my goal to seek out the Real Dive Bars™ & all of these are practically a requirement. plus, it was Saint Paddy's Day in a dive bar in South Milwaukee--to expect anything less would be even stupider than the people who think stupider isn't a real word. your FACE is stupider! staff was on their grind gettin' shit done, nothing to complain about there. the menu was very affordable, although no shame if you spend a day's earnings in a night. definitely not the place for you if your idea of a dive bar can be accurately compared to the cheapest spot in Naperville... but great environment & overall freakin' awesome experience for me & assumably others who share a similar mindset. cannot wait to revisit whenever I head to Milwaukee again. read more

I get lost every time that I'm in South Milwaukee. But today I braved it for a burger and I successfully made it back to Milwaukee proper. I was committed to trying a new place for dinner tonight and found Slick Willy's on Yelp. The reviews and photos drew me straight to a hole in the wall bar on a quiet dimly lit street. Here, you may be a bit out of place driving a car instead of a Harley. There are a number of televisions in the bar to easily and comfortably watch The Packers beat The Bears. I really loved the complete open kitchen behind the bar that allowed me to watch my entire meal be prepared from start to finish. I look up and see the person making my meal cutting a potato into potato wedges. There isn't any Sysco, restaurant Depot kind of food at Slick Willy's. I also observed a big red tomato that was freshly sliced for my cheeseburger. Let me be very clear---The food here is phenomenal and largely homemade. Mozzarella sticks were totally homemade and delicious. Every bite of food was delicious!!! My only critique...? They have "cheese nuggets" on the menu! What in the south of the Wisconsin border are "cheese nuggets?!" I asked and confirmed that they are cheese curds. *Be mindful, this cash only business.* There is an ATM onsite. read more

We came here with our friend while we were visiting from Phoenix. This is a dive bar and they've got your classic dive bar food. We couldn't get over the prices and I think we ordered almost everything on the menu - you can't get a good dive bar like this where we are at in Phoenix and you definitely won't get the prices. A pretty old and decent looking bar in a neighborhood of South Milwaukee. This bar was intriguing from the outside in and took some time for me to actually visit it but I was not disappointed. This bar is typical of many suburban old school malaquis bars and is a hidden gem in an old industrial town outside milwaukee that has several places such as this period the place was packed for a Green Bay Packers game and despite the small confinement everyone seemed be having a good time period this is not a bad bar read more

I love this bar. I have had the BEST times and Tacos you could ever ask for. BUT. Today 11/12/2020. A regular came in and shouting across the bar said that he just got tested for Covid 19 and won't know if his exposure has merited him quarantining and ill not know for 3 days. GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE? no. We had to leave. Turns out the usual bar tender and the owner are both infected. I knew it was risky having lunch in public but apparently there is nothing set in place to stop the spread. I would recommend going there after the virus is under control. Look up Sabrina's review on this thread describing her experience at this place and that's exactly our experience here, although we didn't even get to try the food because when we FINALLY got 2 beers and a soda for our son the bartender was so unfriendly that my husband was like "yeah, we ain't stayin here!" I worked at a cocktail lounge(a bar), actually helped an owner open one, and what always made my tip super jar full and the owners pocket book plentiful was making sure people felt welcome the minute they stepped in, the drinks poured well and the laughing and smiles were in bounds as they left our place. Bummer because it sounds like, if you can get some, food is actually good! You can tell it's a bar fly kinda place and the older bartender lady was more worried about helping her regulars and their "bar dice game" then just grabin us a beer! Bad thing for her is we are generous people and would of loved to have poured some money into this place on a game day! We love a good hole-in-the-wall! Hopefully you know one of the local flies when you step in thankfully one of them was actually nice to us.
