I usually go to the garden center on Sloat but I was in the Richmond so decided to check this one out. It's a little smaller than the Sloat location but they still have everything! They have a selection of outdoor plants and flowers, indoor plants, pots, soil, plant decorations, everything for your plant needs! I found everything to be reasonably priced. I picked up a bag of perlite since I was going to repot some plants. A huge bag was only $9.99, it'll last me a while. They had a very cute seasonal fall/Halloween display too which was fun to see. read more

Walking around Richmond and was passing by, so we stopped to take a look at the garden center. They have some interesting things that you don't see at most garden centers, so I had a good time perusing the aisles for some unusual plants and supplies. We have a garden, so this place gave us ideas of what to use to help the growth of our plants. I've been coming here a fair bit since getting a plot in a community garden. They had a nice rotating set of herbs and vegetables - some they have all the time and some they have just sometimes, as well as a whole bunch of vegetable seeds, flowers and so in. And of course tools and so on. I also like their pots for indoor plants, although I haven't gotten a lot of houseplants there - the focus seems to be more on outdoor gardening. They definitely have the best selection of edible plants in the area. It's also one of the more bike-accessible garden centers - you can go via Arguello or up from Anza/Cabrillo via 3rd and easily reach the JFK/page/market route depending on where you're going. There are two ring type bike racks in front if I remember correctly, with room for cargo bikes. read more

I came here with a plant that needed repotting. Ive been here several times and the last time I came by the staff said they offered repotting services. So I brought a plant and a pot that I need to potting and Elio said that they could only repot plants that I had bought there the same day. What kind of policy is that? When I mentioned that I had made a purchase the same day (a pot) and I thought I would qualify, the Nick then said that the worry is transmitting any insects from plants not bought at the store? But then if I asked if I could repot it myself there in the store and they said yes. So why would they let me repot it by myself at the store if it would carry over insects? Extremely rude, I was asking them questions. They gave me the bare minimum and answers. Customer service here is extremely dissatisfactory. read more

Good place to get organic soil for plants and veggie garden. Occasionally, I also find plants that I like. Their selections of pottery are okay, but I prefer mine from another nursery as theirs seems more curated. This is the place to get Christmas trees and wreaths though as we came by during the holidays and they carried a wonderful selection. read more

I spotted a beautiful stone pot for my fiddle leaf fig that looked just like a photo I saw on Pinterest a year ago. Turns out this suddenly chic tree I bought 2+ years ago is a member of the ficus family. Even brown thumbs such as myself know ficus trees are easily shocked (cue leaf drop) so I hope repotting won't be traumatic; I've grown to like this gigantic tree that thrives despite my benign neglect. The kind staff at Sloat Garden Center was helpful and wasn't annoyed when I made a last-minute decision to purchase another pot just a second before they were just about to drill a drainage opening on the bottom of the planter I'd just paid for. [I'm indecisive that way] With advice on how to move my root-bound beauty to its new, roomy pot, I was heartened that after seeing my overwhelmed expression they called after me, "You got this!" Large selection of indoor and outdoor plants that are in good health. They also sell different types of soil, moss, plant food/fertilizers, carnivorous plant food, and pottery. Most of the pottery seems to be about 5", but you will see limited selections in other sizes, too. The pottery selection changes all the time, so if you see a style that you like, snag it before it's gone forever! From my experience, the staff here has been pretty helpful and knowledgeable about plants and their different watering/lighting needs. My partner and I have been on a long journey of cozying up our apartment, and plant acquisition has been a big part of that ride. As such, we are always looking for new plant stores to feed our habit. Sloat garden happily fills our needs. Many plant stores in SF are quite small but the Sloat center in the Richmond is spacious. It has a large outdoor section (with appropriate outdoor plants) and then an indoor section with a lot of more apartment friendly varieties. They also have a large selection of pots and other planting accessories. Most importantly, the plants we have bought here are healthy and have faired well in our home. This is something to call as some stores don't seem to have consistently high quality nursery sources. And in case you're wondering, if you're more of a hardcore gardener, they'll have you covered too. We always see many people leaving with several bags of soil, etc. Definitely recommend for all your plant and gardening needs! read more

If this garden store was Berkeley Hort or Westbrae or the Dry Garden, there would not be any Sapote left. Any real gardeners in the bay area will tell you the best and rarest plants are found in the east bay, Specifically Berkeley or Oakland, or even Alameda, where you can find exotic subtropical plants at a steep premium price (i.e. that $65 a pot of Buddha's Hand citrus plant). And if you are slightly more adventurous, go to Annie's Annuals in Richmond, or Mission Hills Nursery in San Diego. You can find some real unusual plants to wow your fellow gardeners with. I spent a good number of years acquiring rare subtropical plants around the country. I can tell you that we serious gardeners are insane crazy bunch when it comes to rare plants. San Francisco is not known for subtropical plant nurseries. Especially the suburb part of the town where one barely ever sees any sunlight. But don't let that fool you. Competition is not nearly as fierce here for rare fruits from Central America. Most people here only think about planting a guava tree or sapote in their imaginary yard where the warm sun beams down and they have no neighbors staring down at them at all hours. I was dragged here, as I tend to be when I'm in this part of town. He made it happen by driving me there and then telling me to check it out. I almost said no because the weather sucked, as per usual. But what a treasure trove I stumbled onto. Guava and Sapote. I've been looking for both to no avail. And for some added variety, I acquired pots of herbs and rare succulent to keep my sun garden filled with lushness. Before you commit on driving down to San Diego to pick up some subtropical plants, make a stop here. You may be pleasantly surprised. read more

I used to love coming here to get my plants and supplies, but not anymore. In fact, I won't be coming back after being talked to in a very rude manner by one if the employees who wasn't only a jerk, but he was completely wrong about the needs in treating my house plant. I came in looking for house plant soil because I was told by a friend that the current soil looked old and needed to be replaced. When I approached the register and asked a couple of questions about their Sloat brand house soil, this tall guy with blonde hair immediately started talking to me with this loud, arrogant attitude and crazy-ass looks. The entire time, he gave off this condescending you-don't-know-anything-and-I-know-everything look, and made sure his voice was loud enough so everyone on could hear him speaking. Even when I showed an image of my plant in it's current soil and pot, he just continued being a complete jerk about it and just stared me down. After allowing him to ramble on, I simply asked what he thought I needed for my plant. He told me to use a plant food, rather than change the soil. I paid for the item and thanked him for helping me, but he just stood there staring at me as if I had wasted his time. Something told me not to trust this douche-bag, so I went to the other Sloat Garden Center and asked someone there. Shared the same information and image, and was told by the amazing staff that the soil DID need changing. He even went further by sharing tips on how to do it. He did include that the plant food that I bought from douche-bag would help, but that was optional and changing the soil was what really mattered for optimal plant health. Noticing similar Yelp reviews that may have to do with the same person. The owner needs to stop with the defensive responses and train this guy to be a better employee, or just stick him in the back because he should NOT be serving customers directly. read more

What can I say...this place is well know in San Francisco. Hard core green thumbs are eager to help with any gardening questions. We bought a fiddle leaf fig tree and a base $200+. The manager was great giving advice on taking care of the tree and suggestions with our little toddler playing around the area. Their selection is not huge but more then enough to satisfy your green thumb needs! My only issue when we returned the next day to pick up the tree the sales person was not as attentive as I would have hoped. Maybe it was me but spending $200+ I would have hoped his customer service would have been a little more polished. Would recommend. read more

I came here to find a new pot after my plant outgrew its previous one and to get a succulent. Overall, I thought their selection of pots and plants were pretty good and I thought the customer service I received was great! When I asked if I could get my plant repotted in the new pot that I bought, they said that they don't typically repot plants that were bought elsewhere. But I think they felt pretty bad for my plant because of how small its previous pot was and they made a rare exception, which I greatly appreciate since I don't really have a green thumb and I'm just trying to keep the dang plant alive for as long as possible. I didn't ask too many questions, but I did feel like the staff was knowledgeable and it's clear they know their plants. I must've spent $1000 here over the summer season. I shop here a lot. The good parts are location, I live nearby in San Francisco, quality of the plants and flowers is very good, the staff is usually helpful in the store, with knowledge about plants and flowers, and carrying stuff out to your car no problem if you need a hand. The prices are expensive, like if you compared it to Home Depot 20 milesWhere are you'd be paying a lot more but you get better quality and get convenience. If you compare it with other garden centers that are not Home Depot in Marin NAPA and Sonoma the prices are just a little bit more. If you have a problem with something they will give you a refund without a big hassle. They stand behind what they sell in my experience. Long story short if you like shopping at a small place with a very good selection get help from staff convenient location and can afford to pay high prices I think the Sloat near Clement is really good, that's why I go back a lot. The Sloat all the way out on Sloat Boulevard is way bigger, but it's not really better. read more

Love love LOVE this place! I cannot say enough good things about it! Beautiful selection of indoor and outdoor plants. Friendly and knowledgeable people working there. I took a photo in of my hibiscus plant being covered in black dots, and they immediately knew that it was covered in aphids. They recommended an organic spray, and now two weeks later, the health of my plant has improved significantly. I first discovered Sloat Gardens through sf.funcheap.com because of their free kids event: a scavenger hunt through the garden center at a different location. My son had such a great time that I joined the membership program and have started going to Sloat Gardens for all my gardening needs. We recently went again for another free kids event: making bird feeders. They had kids dip pinecones in sunflower butter and roll them in birdseed. The pinecone is attached to a string so you can hang it outside. What a wonderful, simple, and fun 5-minute activity to do. I told them how much my kid loved the scavenger hunt the time before, and they pulled out a new scavenger hunt for him to do! I cannot say enough good things about this place. It is the best gardening center in SF! read more

The staff at this location have earned it my 5 star rating. Every time I'm there, the store feels sufficiently staffed, which I can't say about the other locations. The staff here are extremely helpful and knowledgeable, always making sure customers are getting the help they need. It's usually the same staff that I see in the year and half or so that I've been going; always a good sign. I hope they're being well paid! The best advice I've gotten lately was in regards to my spider mite situation. My poor Dwarf Banana tree was being viciously attacked by spider mites. I tried an insecticidal soap and then went for the neem oil that was previously recommended to me. The staff member (I forget her name), recommended also feeding the plant more regularly, strengthening its immunity and ability to fight off pests. I immediately went home and fed the tree and sprayed it with neem oil, doing the same thing every 4-5 days. In the course of two weeks, the plant has fully rebounded and I've had two new leafs grow in. The Spider mites have been almost completely exterminated. yay! read more

Nice selection of plants, and some very cute pots. There aren't a TON of pots, but I did really like a simple tray with little matching pots that fit into it, sort of square in shape, that came in a few different colors, and the set was only $9.99. I bought some succulents, they have some tiny ones for about $2, some for $4, and a lot more for $7. They had some very nice "christmas cactus" in bright colors, bromeliads, which I did not know until I read their sign "thrive on neglect" (perfect!), and my favorite, little "air plants" and trailing pink-budded flowers that are inside big snail shells and are made to hang. (I just wrote a review for a cute boutique that had these the other day, and I think this is where the boutique got them from, they look the same, very cute.) They seem to have quite a large variety of plants, I usually just go for tiny succulents since I have no yard and like miniature gardens and terrariums, but I was pretty happy with what I could choose from. read more

I had a great experience with the people here, starting with Cameron who was so helpful and holding a Yoshino cherry tree for me for a few days. I originally put it on hold on Sunday, but there was a huge farmers market and very little parking. I learned later on that if you want to run in and out then you can double park. I couldn't fit the tree in my car so I had to come back and the person helping me at that time was also very helpful. Overall, I would definitely shop here again, I am happy with my experience shopping there, and love my tree. read more

My hotel needed poinsettias for Christmas, so since I live in the neighborhood I thought of giving Sloat the business. I realized later I had made a mistake! I purchased three large pots and five small pots, which came up to $151.00. What disappointed me, was the lack of customer service! Everyone was doing their own thing and no one offered any assistance. I couldn't fit everything on that little cart and I felt I needed some assistance taking the plants out to the car in two trips. SHOP LIFTER'S PARADISE - BRING A TRUCK ! It's difficult to believe these folks are related to the store on Sloat. Had I not walked to this branch in my neighborhood, I would have backed up my car and loaded up the trunk. Damn sure no one would have stopped me for there was no one there. I ran circles around the place trying to find someone to assist me. After standing at the cash register for awhile with an herb I decided to buy (stealing really isn't my way) this idiot kid pops out of the huddle the staff had been in in the far back cavity of the store to ring me up and asked if I found everything okay. "HELL NO!". I still haven't found a similar plant I bought at the other Sloat and at this point, I will never again give them my business as this was the THIRD time I went in here with NO help. read more

The closer counter was in use; the second was vacant, with a frowning younger fellow behind the counter. I walked up to the counter. He looks at me. "You ready?" No greeting, no "Please place your purchase on the counter", nothing at all. He entered the price into his cash register. "Excuse me," I asked, "but can you tell me if this tree is toxic to pets?" "Dunno." "Well, is there someone else here who could tell me?" "Nope." "So, you're telling me that you have no idea if you're selling a Christmas tree that might kill a cat or dog if they happen to chew on it. And that there's no one else here would might have any knowledge about this." "Nope. You can go on-line. Forty-nine seventy-three." Sloat, you need to hire people who (a) are a little more knowledgeable about your stock and (b) give a damn about serving your customers.
