I decided to give Smallcakes Cupcakery a try since it was my birthday. The shop is upstairs above the Johnny Rockets pizza place in the same strip mall. When I walked inside I was provided a friendly welcome. I noticed that the small space was very clean and comfortable. The display case was presented nicely. This stoked my excitement to want to try the entire case, but I had to make sure I tempered myself before I brought everything as I was tempted to just by the looks alone. However, it was by previous experience from other places that reminded me of looks can be deceiving so I decided to buy a few, but enough to gauge accurately how I felt about this place. I wanted to try a few different flavors that were enough to give me a better opinion in case the one did not satisfy. I ordered four cupcakes: a lemon flavored one, one that reminds me of the Hostess cupcake, an orange flavored one that is said to taste like a creamsicle, and a coconut one. I tried two already: the lemon one and the chocolate Hostess one. I can say that I was truly unimpressed and underwhelmed because the lemon flavored one did not have enough of the lemony flavor I expected and the cake tasted very familiar to a famous boxed version which was extremely disappointing. The icing was thick, rich, and little too sweet. I had to scrape off lots of the icing. Next, was the chocolate one which I was really excited because as a child I always loved getting those two little chocolate cakes from the convenience store whenever my family would stop for gas or a rest stop while on a vacation road trip. My first bite left me feeling disappointed because it was nothing like I expected. There was a slight bitterness that was subtle but noticeable to me. Again, the too thick piping of icing made the whole thing too sweet and again not what I would expect from a shop that is supposed to specialize in cupcakes. Although I probably wouldn't return to Smallcakes Cupcakery because I can bake and I know how cake from scratch tastes, I would not stop you from making a trip yourself for the chance to treat yourself or your pet to this place is a time to celebrate life! read more

While it's a shade pricey (it's locating in a bit of a yuppie region), it's an excellent store. Their cakes are delicious: rich, tasty, high quality. They have lots of flavors, and the flavors are spot-on: the s'mores taste like s'mores, the birthday cake like birthday cake, etc. Each cupcake is a work of art; they look fantastic. The store itself is comfortable and clean. The cashiers have consistently been gracious and kind. They also do a lot for the community. I ordered a half dozen red velvet cupcakes with pecan topping, and two each of the pink vanilla, chocolate sundae, and birthday cake. I ended up getting the German chocolate, Fudge, and Oreo cookie cupcakes. The fudge ended up being my favorite one but by no means were the other ones nasty. The frosting on each taste great and is proportionate to the cupcake. It's sweat and creamy. But since I'm not the biggest on sweets I could feel the sugar hitting my bloodstream . I've tried several cupcakes from this store and generally think they are A-OK. Smallcakes offers roughly 20 different cupcakes each day. There are daily specials and the menu can get creative and interesting with cupcakes such as Bananas Foster, Boston Cream Pie (made with Bavarian Cream), Oatmeal Cream Pie, and Margarita (made with Jose Cuervo lime margarita mix). Each cupcake is big and comes with plenty of rich frosting, which I like. It's probably the best thing about the cupcakes here. One cupcake costs $3.25, a half dozen is $19.25, and a full dozen is $33. One cupcake should suffice to fill most people's immediate sweet tooth. Ordering a dozen is great for parties. With the Peanut Butter Cup, I like the added texture and flavor of the crushed peanut butter cups in the frosting. With the Cookies-n-Cream, I like the smooth and creamy Oreo-vanilla flavor. All of the cupcakes are nicely presented, though some stand out way more than others. These include the S'More, Hot Fudge Sundae, and Caramel Crunch. The additional toppings on these particular cupcakes set them apart. The S'more has a mini graham cracker with chocolate drizzle on top, the Hot Fudge Sundae actually looks like a mini hot fudge sundae with whipped cream, hot fudge, and bright red cherry on top, and the Caramel Crunch has two mini pretzels and large granule sea salt sprinkled on top. If you're looking to impress someone, order one of these. Service is satisfactory. To save time if picking up a dozen or more cupcakes, call ahead. There are dozens of good cupcake shops in metro Atlanta. While I wouldn't go out of my way to come to Smallcakes, I think it is a fine shop for the area. read more

This pains me! I want to love it here. The cupcakes are very good - moist and flavorful. BUT I'm concerned about the cleanliness. While we were hungrily eyeing the cupcake display and debating which flavors to get, we noticed a fly trapped in the case. The fly was flying all around and landing on many cupcakes. Finally the girl working was able to capture the fly but then proceeded to reload the display case with the fly-covered cupcakes and sell them. For $3.75 each I don't want to know my cupcake is covered with fly juice. At least take the fly cupcakes to the back before refilling the case, so the customers can think they are clean. read more

After I eat a healthy salad from Panera Bread at The Avenue, I get my sweet fix at Small cakes. The latest cup cake I tried is lemon drop. I'll have to rate it 5 stars alone. It was very moist. I could taste the lemon throughout the cake. As I eat my cake with a fork, eventually I work my way to a surprise lemon explosion in the middle. The frosting was just right considering the sweet tart combination of the cake. There was a drop of lemon on top of the icing as well. I'm not crazy about lemons, but this cake was delicious. Each time I visit I like to try something new. I'm more of a chocolate girl, but it's fun to explore. I know desserts aren't healthy. Therefore, I make it a wise decision to buy only one cup cake. It truly seals the deal after a great meal. They also have wonderful t shirts. One has a cute little saying. I won't spoil it. I'll let you go and see for yourself. I stumbled across this place while going to eat at the pizza spot located downstairs from them. This location is in a small plaza with other small businesses (upstairs). Parking is a breeze due to it being located in a plaza. I was excited to see they had red velvet cupcakes and the icing contains pecans sprinkles on top, so for those that are true red velvet lovers you know pecans are a must but many places don't include them on top. A few days ago, placed 2 separate orders (total 4 dozens cupcakes) for my school's cheer teams (varsity and Jv) event. The order was purposely placed two separately, paid separately and had two different pickup times to avoid any confusions or mix up on the cupcakes since each order placed were specifically for the team that the order was placed under. Needless to say, small cakes took it upon themselves and combined both orders, despite the orders being placed separately. After each team realized the orders were wrong, small cakes was contacted about the wrong orders. Initially, small cakes agreed to replace both orders and cupcakes can pick up the same day. However upon arriving at small cakes to pick up the correct orders, the worker at small cakes stated they will not replace the cupcakes (despite this being totally their fault). But, we have 40 plus cheer girls who were looking forward to getting their favorite cupcakes; but was only met with disappointment because small cakes combined both order of cupcakes. The fact small cakes refused to remedy the situation (especially when it's was all their fault), I WILL NEVER order from them again. This was totally waste of money; plus the disappointment on our girls' faces was the worst out of all of this. This was my first time and definitely will be my last time ordering from small cakes. I would NEVER recommend this establishment!! I'll keep my business with Nothin Bundt cakes where customer service is always SUPERB! 1/26/2022 - This is in response to the response to my comment. First and foremost, neither orders were shown to the individuals who picked them up. As stated before, there was a reason why 2 separate orders were placed. Why you guys would take it upon yourself to mix the cupcakes completely baffles me. However when called, it was told that we could come pick up a our new orders. Upon returning to the store, the gesture of 3 cupcakes was given because of you guys' mistake. You guys completely messed up an order of 96 cupcakes; but only want to give 3. When asked about the entire order that was to be replaced, your representative stated that there were not enough cupcakes to cover the order. After being informed that there were not enough cupcakes, the 3 cupcakes were not accepted and the refund was requested bc it was also told that we could get our refund. After arriving to the store, there no replacement of cupcakes and the refund was refused. The owner just stated about the cupcakes not being returned. It was never requested; and with increase of Covid, I guess the owner was planning on resaling them. Interesting!! As stated before, this mishap is totally on Small Cakes. The main question is why would two orders of cupcakes be combined especially when the orders were placed and paid separately. Once again due the poor customer service of this establishment, I will NEVER shop here or at any small cakes; and I will definitely let everyone I know about my experience. Damnit this place is less than 5 minutes drive from my home. I'm just going to have to pretend its not there and that I did not experience what I did yesterday, because my waistline cannot tolerate regular visits. These are THE best cupcakes I've had in Atlanta hands down. That includes Cami Cakes, Piece of Cake, Gigi's and many others I can't remember the names of. Well, everyone devoured their cupcakes and RAVED about them. (So much for me getting a leftover one.) They're located in a small space upstairs- only a few tables in a hallway, so I wouldn't say it's a great place to take a date. The cupcakes we've tried are very good. The variety is huge. There is a menu on the wall of all the offerings and what day's they're made- greatly appreciated. Also very much appreciated that they do a gluten free cake on Tuesdays- red velvet I believe. We haven't tried that particular one yet. Cost seems right in line with everybody else- 3$ for a cupcake. Offerings do run out near the end of the day, so don't expect the whole menu 5 minutes before closing- what they do have is fresh.
