When the self checkout machine shows a message that doesn't coincide with a normal checkout process, and it freezes up, the checkout assistant shouldn't tell the customer "Well YOU'RE the cashier" (twice) and, I'm busy taking care of 7 of these machines. Being that the store can't hire enough normal cashiers I will go to another store where THEY can. read more

It's okay as a grocery store, but good for vendors and contractors to load up on supplies for their small business. Lower your standards and it's decent for the money. We found everything we wanted and couldn't believe the variety for a "discount " supermarket! And, they have electric carts (which I need). Even a big box of Jimmy Dean breakfast bowls, at $17.99, or $2.23 per bowl, half the cost of other stores. We're interested in the online ordering and delivery to our Laguna Niguel area. I go to Smart and Final often and everyone is very kind. I usually use self check because the line at the checks tends usually have people with carts full. This store has just about everything you could imagine, a one stop shop. They have the name brands you can count on and plus their own brand store brand, first street. Pricing overall is generally fair, but it's really the selection and options that keep you coming back. But tonight coming thru Paolas line...I asked if she was open she pick3d up the closed sign and threw it somewhere looking pissed!! Meanwhile my husband and and 2 mentally retarded boys were behind her patiently waiting for her to finish this rude tirade..in my 32 years of grocery background I've never seen anything like this and I've been privy to over 9-10 smartn finals all over LA county and Orange it was below except able don't you think Mike Carren??? 2 weeks ago another cashier named CeeCee I believe made me and this poor tired lady wait 15 min to get a price check while another checker opened up and didn't take 1st in line..she also was rude,uncaring and as I finally checked out of another line and was walking out she caught my eyes and openly laughed in my face!! I like shopping he because of the great prices and large sized packages. Kind of like a cosco without the membership. Service is fine, never much of a line either. Plenty of easy parking and always well stocked. Great option in the area if you are looking to stock up. read more

I have been shopping at this store since 1997 and Bernice and Sal as well as many others are always friendly, accommodating and willing to help in any way they can, The store carries an incredible array of products. 12/13/19@2:50pm. This smart and final was nice and clean. Had everything I need. However, the customer service is what lowers this review. When providing I.D. the cashier or the manager did not believe that it was a valid ID and made a scene about it. It was embarrassing and even the other customers were bothered by it especially since the line was busy. We did not appreciate their rude and snippy behavior in the store. I love Smart & Final. Their food is fresh. Their large size products are perfect as per things that one uses all the time. I'm always in and out, quickly. I'm not a great cook but, there are always great ideas such as stuffed mushrooms, Asian salads with fabulous dressing and Chinese croutons. There are many great ideas like that....I love it it keeps me eating fresh food otherwise I would probably not eat.... This is the first and only Smart & Final I've ever been to, so I have no other place to compare it with. But from my experiences here, it was always pleasant. People who work here seem a little more happy. I usually hit this place for something I need in the kitchen and they usually have what I need in big bulk, which is awesome. Big tubs of cream cheese and big boxes of baking soda! They do have regular sizes too. I would go here for cooking/kitchen needs and cleaning stuff. My hair is super long and it really clogs up the drains. This place sells Drano in a huge bottle. I guess one thing that I like about this place is that it's kinda like Costco, but without membership dues and it's not as crowded. 8/10/20- The line at this store is ridiculous. I came to get one single item, but the line was so long it wrapped inside the entire store. They only had two registers open for the entire line. It was at least 15 minutes to check out and my drinks weren't cold anymore. read more

A family member goes here a lot, and every single time they've come home from this grocery store, they've had multiple moldy items. They have really bad eyesight and don't see this while in the store, so I'm usually the one who finds the unpleasant surprise. Usually it's the fruits and vegetables they come home with that are moldy, but I guess it's spreading to the cheese. Do yourself a favor and don't bother coming here if you're going for fruits and veggies (or cheese, I guess). If you're buying dry items, I'm guessing you should be okay, but this has happened so many times that I no longer trust this location. read more

This store got a serious remodel a few years ago. It was down the street from me and I would visit 2-3 times a week for 5 years. Kathy is a hard working employee and represents S&F professionally. I went mainly for their fresh produce. Years ago I would have said you were crazy that S&F would have the best produce in town. I like this grocery store because of the low prices compared to Ralphs and Albertsons. The young man (Giovanni) who works in the produce area is very helpful. Kathy, the checker, is a total sweetheart and I wait in her line even if the line is long. The selection of the foods and the private label (First Street) is better by way of price and quality compared to Ralphs. The produce is fresh, the store is clean and the quality is good. read more

This Smart & Final has a new name - Smart & Final: Extra! I guess these are the Extras: 1) The store has been completely re-organized and is much easier to use now. They have more registers and more checkers to help answer questions. Still, on a recent visit, I did experience a long delay in getting some help reaching a box of cups poised on the highest shelf in the store. This time, though, someone stocking produce was able to help. Used to be you could never find a single solitary staff person on the floor. 2) Speaking of produce, their produce section is now overflowing with fresh fruit and veggies - somehow they make it look more abundant than the other stores. It looks like a farmers market over here now. Whereas it used to look sorta sad. Like Charlie Brown's Christmas tree. 3) Most everything I check here is far below the prices in Ralph's, Von's, etc. Example: mulling spices for apple cider were $3,29 here, and then I passed the same brand at Ralph's the next day and saw they were $4.49. 4) This is the best place to shop for large parties - they have cups, plates, napkins, coffee stirrers, you name it. And again, the prices here are way, way lower than any of the party stores. If they sold rolls of plastic tablecloths here, I wouldn't even have to go to those party stores anymore. The only area of this store that I've found to be cheaper at COSTCO is the liquor section. While shopping for events at work, I've noted that the alcohol here is maybe 50 cents more than at COSTCO. So, it's minimal, but when you are buying a lot - it adds up. Party on! read more

I just left this store. My self and three other people went into the store. I was wearing my mask and the other people hand their bandanas. We walked into the store and headed to the drink section. After a few minutes and employee wearing a black mask under his nose came up and asked in a sharp tone for the three people to put their masks on. The three people forgot to put them up and said sorry and quickly went to put them on. Meanwhile a woman, named Kathy, bolted across the grocery store to proceed to rudley demand, not ask, for the three people, who were putting already to put them on, to put their mask on. I understand the importance of following regulations, but both of these employees came across hostile and rude. To add more insult at least 7 people were not wearing their masks properly or at all. I would have appreciated if they were more polite or if it was this important they would have a person at the door greeting and reminding people to wear their masks. read more

I have been to this place several times and I always get horrible customer service the cashiers are rude and nasty sometimes I had to use the bathroom once and it took me 10 minutes just to get in there because they treated me like I was some kind of homeless person and even the man who let me in the bathroom said they don't let homeless people use the bathroom I think this is sad homeless people have to poop too where is the humanity these businesses are so unkind and dehumanizing They wouldn't even give me the code even after I told him I was ready to piss myself they insisted I wait for somebody to let me and seriously 10 minutes I waited I decided I would never spend money here again the savings isn't that great anyway read more

Before I went to this store I checked the saftey precautions on the Smart and final website. "Other Safety Precautions" "All Smart & Final associates are being provided gloves and facial coverings, and are required to wear them." I felt confident visiting Smart and Final. When I arrived at the San Juan Capistrano location on 4-15-20 at 9am, the employees were not wearing gloves or masks. When I asked the store manager about this discrepancy, he told me that the saftey precautions were only for LA and San Diego. More on the subject: "Smart & Final is committed to the health of our communities, and we're doing our best to make sure your shopping experience with us is a comfortable and safe one. Let's look out for each other, because we're in this together." Only if your visit a San Diego or Los Angeles location. That's their best. Without mentioning that their saftey precautions do not apply to Orange County, Smart And Final's saftey policies are a misrepresentation at best. read more
