Mark and Charmagne provided fast friendly customer service! This was my first time shopping at this Smart & Final. I needed help finding the right coffee lids. Charmagne called for assistance and in less than 10 seconds Mark came dashing down the isle to help me. He went above and beyond to show me where things are located and how to use the Smart & Final website. The line had 3-4 customers but moved fast because Charmagne was fast and efficient. My wait time was less than 5 minutes. This store is the farthest for my shopping needs but I will go the extra miles because of great customer services by Mark and Charmagne. read more

Dont come here if youre in a rush, youll be waiting in line for the only single register open while the other employees just goof off around the store instead of helping with the other registers. I dont understand why they dont just add self checkout if they have such low, useless staffing problem. Every single time no exceptions I come here to pick up an item or two and I end up in line for 15-20 minutes and you can tell all the other customers are frustrated as well specially when you see the other cashiers yelling "Im going on break" like really? Review update long over due. I used to hate this place, but I still had to use it for convenience purposes (back in the day). I no longer work in the area, so I don't come here as much anymore. But I have noticed marked improvements, even going back to 2018 when I was still a regular here. The difference was in a change in management. The management structure now is more diligent and proactive. The shelves are usually pretty well stocked (even under these crazy shelter circumstances). I can find more things here, than I can at Lucky's or Safeway. And there are always checkers available, that don't leave their post, even when it's slow, unlike before, which used to frustrate me. Great place to buy in slightly larger quantities for value, but often not as bulky as Costco. I buy meats and supplies here, if I'm barbequing for more than 6. And a decent place to check out sales. When they do have them, they are usually exceptional. Just bought some chicken drumsticks and thighs to grill up for $.79/lb. I grilled a bunch up and passed them down to extended family. I was able to feed 10 people for $8 worth of meat. Kray right?! So my only knock is that they don't corral their carts like other places. So if you're in the parking lot, look for a cart there. Because you probably won't find one near the door. Also at night, this parking lot is crazy dark. Not a big thing in the summer, but in the winter, it is kinda depressing. But just showing some love from seeing the improvements first hand. Gotta give props to management and staff. read more

This is used to be a hit or miss place in the past. I have some really bad experience a few years back. And I used to avoid this place after that. I resumed shopping here, may be in the beginning of 2020. And ever since it's always nice shopping experience. They have made some rearrangements. Also the checkout experience has been changed as well. It's more than a typical convenience store but not as big as a Costco warehouse. If you are looking for larger quantities for grocery items, this is a right place. They have a good meat, bakery and diary sections. They always have a few items on sale in bakery section - check it out. Apart from the groceries, they have other Home and other supplies sections. I always found some of the items cheaper than the other grocery outlets around, especially the detergent and other fabric care products. Check out for the offers. They have made improvements to the check out. But the time for checkout can be still time consuming. That's one of the biggest issues there. Some times they open only a single checkout counter. I remember they were keeping 3-4 counters during the early days of pandemic to control the crowd. Not sure whether they are under-staffed, but they have to do something about this. But the staffs are friendly and helpful. Parking is always an issue in this shopping complex. Finding a parking near to the store is always difficult. After shopping here on a 2 to 3 time basis every week for the last five years and bringing my dog in the cart with her dog shopping cart car seat and I was told that she could not be in the cart after me going here five years with the same dog so I said OK no problem I'll take my dog, you keep the groceries. Stupid woman cost the company a faithful regular, which pays her salary, had to open her fat trap and turn off a valuable customer. There was a lot in the cart and I still had 3 more aisles to go and I spend no less than $600 a month here, one person, 1 dog. That's most of my disability check that I was spending in here!! I will never ever step foot in the store again because of a rude unprofessional person with no care or compassion. I'm disabled, I survived a stroke! This is my ESA dog; she goes everywhere with me, even on airplanes, and no other store has ever asked me to take my dog out of the cart. Filthy stinking babies sit in those seats! I'm darn sure my dog is 100x cleaner than a baby in a diaper full of crap! So screw you, SMART & FINAL, you lost a very valuable customer. I will order my candy items online on Amazon now, give them the money, not you. I will shop at Safeway for my fresh groceries from now on. They have never said to take my dog out of the cart! Or use Amazon Fresh. Plus you get GAS REWARDS at Safeway and the same or better prices and much better food! You screwed over a really good customer, so screw you and that stupid clerk in the candy aisle who told me I couldn't have my dog, fire her! I wrote this immediately upon exiting the store. Great place to shop for groceries. They have decent prices and good options. The service is generally better than most grocery stores which is plus. Waiting lines can get long at times but they do go by quickly. I love how the register lanes are named after streets in Fremont. One downside is the parking as it can be a huge problem finding a parking space during peek hours. Overall a decent 4 star experience. read more

I found Wasabi & Soy Sauce Blue Diamond Almonds on sale $3.89 a small can, bought 6 cans. My friend said Walmart has them too, but I didn't go there so maybe I paid too much, don't know. As I entered, the scent of rotting oranges hits me. Produce is the first department that one encounters. A lot of the fruits and vegetables were spoiled. Too bad, because they have quite a variety. The rest of the store is decent. I picked up some Cattleman's Finest brand rib eye steaks in the meat department. We broiled them that evening, and they tasted great. I checked the dates on some of the dairy and frozen food products, and they were all current. I was delighted to find some cans of Stag Steak House chili with no beans, as no one else carries it anymore, as well as a large variety of trash can liners in sizes that are hard to find elsewhere. Checkout was quick, and the cashier friendly. This is a good place to get groceries at a discount. I will try them again someday, and hopefully I'll have some good news to report on their produce section. read more

I don't know if that sentence deserves an "well of course" response, but I was very pleased w/ this Smart & Final! LOCATION: In outdoor shopping center area btw Walnut Ave & Capital Ave, along Liberty St. Plenty of parking in shared lot w/ other store fronts. No trees in lot, so don't expect to find a shaded spot to park ur car. CUST SVC: Helpful & plenty of staff on the clock. Register lines were moving pretty good & it was quite busy on a Sat afternoon, but not overly crowded like a common wkend afternoon @ CostCo or Walmart. STORE: Everything you expect to be in a Smart & Final is here, but the store is exceptionally large & spacious compared to what I've been to. Looking to do some grocery shopping, buy party supplies for a small/medium/large/XLarge group of folks, or buy supplies for a fair-booth/picnic party, they've got it plus more! Pricing & quantity options like Foodmaxx & CostCo, membership card like Safeway to get extra discount else purch item(s) @ their normal price, & they bag ur stuff like Safeway/Lucky's. I can say only thing not large was their floral dept...itty bitty selections; can't remember if I saw a card section in here either (sorry). How did I not know that Smart and Final has so many items that would suit my baking needs? I had gone out of my way to chefs ware house in South San Francisco and San Carlos to look for certain items such as sheet pan, unique baking pans, containers for ingredients and the like. Also I was looking for large pastry piping bags and I couldn't find it at Michaels craft store. The largest one they have is 16 inch. Tonight I was able to find everything I had been looking for at smart and final and it's only five minutes from where I live! I even found 24 inch pastry piping bags so that I can save some time when I frost big batch of cupcakes. Also I found small paper cups such as 3 or 3.5 oz so that I can make homemade popsicles without having to buy the popsicle molds! And lets not forget they are the only grocery store that I know of that carries manufacturing cream which is a richer version of heavy whipping cream that's good for making custard, ice cream, cake frosting and the like. In case you are wondering about manufacturing cream; the name is a little misleading it is just heavy whipping cream with a slightly higher fat content so that dessert tastes better with it. Commercial kitchens usually use manufacturing cream as opposed to regular heavy whipping cream. It's basically natural and comes from milk not something manufactured in the lab or something. They also carry a lot of baking items in bulk such as chocolate chips, sugar sprinkles for cake decorating, flour and sugar, cooking oil, just to name a few. Granted if you are looking for the high end products you are not going to find it here. For example I was looking for almond flour to make French marcarons, they don't have it. But surprisingly they do carry some good brands such as King Arthur's unbleached flour, for both bread flour and all-purpose flour, in addition to the regular Gold Medal brand bleached flour. For cake flour, however, they only carry the bleached one. Whole Foods is the only store where I can find unbleached cake flour. The lines at cashier that the other Yelpers were talking about could be a problem though. I finally finished shopping at about 9:15 p.m. And there was only one cashier open! There were a few people in line with what looks like a two week supply of food. Luckily for me one of the ladies saw my bag and let me go in front of her so I didn't have to wait long at all. The guy behind me that grabbed what looks like a bottle of coffee powder was not so lucky. They should have at least on more cashier open for express items. Well at 45 minutes before closing I will give them a break this time. Plus kudos to them for opening from 7 a.m. To 10 p.m.. Whole Foods only opens till. to 9 pm. So to sum up my "near-Costco" experience at Smart and Final, and it is very similar as well: I walked in expecting to spend only 5 minutes picking up eggs and butter, but ended up walking out 45 minutes later with almost everything I had on my baking wish list. Went to the grand opening and all I gotta say is Wow! This place was packed...parking lot and all. I'm a fan of Smart & Final (I generally go to the one on Fremont Blvd) but this one is different - bigger! They carry some of the same things as Costco would - without it being big enough for a family of 6. So if you are single or have small family like I do (3) then this store is for you. Plus you dont need to pay for a membership, because there isnt one. The staff is friendly and helpful. I will be frequently going to this store from now on as the prices of items are way cheaper than Safeway. I'm going to wait for the madness to die down and then will return! read more

What's up with Fremont having extremely mediocre supermarkets? This Smart & Final is no exception. It's OK and has most items that you would need for a household, but it feels a bit dated inside. The produce doesn't look super great, and the prices aren't exactly rock bottom here either. I found items that were a bit cheaper at Target (namely, flour). As they say you can shop there without any membership fees. Ever since the lockdown, when Costco was like a madhouse. We shop here for our essentials like their meats are great, sometimes their vegetables are ok, dairy products like butter, buttermilk and milk. We also get chips, laundry and other stuff there when they are on sale. But some of their signature brand like First Street on few products are hit or miss. I highly recommend buying some products like laundry, detergent, all of their meats are great, dairy products, juice, chips and some kitchen supplies. This location has better service than the other one in Union City. The staff are very helpful. I appreciate their courtesy, professionalism and business. read more

They've got 89 cent avocados that felt pretty decent but that's the nicest thing I can say about this Smart & Final. It would have been worth it for me to drive to the one in San Mateo which has better prices, items stacked so that they don't fall on you, and a better bulk good selection. Another thing about the San Mateo location is that they never have just one cashier while the line wraps around the store like this one does. The poor single cashier got on the loud speaker 7 times and it took over 15 minutes for another employee to come up from and help with the line, which is pretty unforgivable. read more

This Smart & Final Extra is located in the Walnut Plaza here near downtown Fremont. This location surprisingly actually gets a decent amount of business. When ever we come to dine at Golden Bay Chinese Restaurant which is a Chinese restaurant located right next to this Smart & Final Extra, we come here to browse around and see what they have to offer and if they have any good deals. We don't come here often because this store is far from where we live and we don't get smart & Final ADs in the mail like we do with other grocery stores. Firstly, yes the parking lot here can be a bit sketchy mainly at night because well it's poorly lite, the lights here don't tend to shine that well. There are plenty of "Shopping Cart Corrals" in the parking lot which is actually pretty surprising because well you don't see that many in store parking lots. Meaning Smart & Final spent quite the money on those probably knowing they'd save more money investing in those. When we approach the parking lot, we always see someone collecting the shopping carts and bringing them back to the front of the store. The funny part is everytime after we finsh our meal at Golden Bay, we come then to shop here and there out of shopping carts already, happens every time! We'd have to get one from the parking lot! Smart & Final Extra does sometimes have some pretty good deals. You just have to mainly check out the weekly ad in store or even on-line via their website smartandfinal.com. We scored some pretty good deals on today's visit: Dreyer's Ice Cream $2.99 Each! Sweet Cantoelope Melons 4lbs for $1!! First Street Wide Pan Bread $1.49! Lay's Kettle Cooked Potato Chips $1.99!! Regarding the Lay's Potato Chips, we noticed that they charged us $2.99 for 1, when the price said $1.99, but according to the cashier we had to buy 3 in order for the price to be $1.99, HOWEVER NO where did it state that on the price listing...and we told the cashier and he looked at it and saw it also said only $1.99 so he took $1.00 off our total purchase because it didn't say you had to buy 3 in order to receieve that price, now that's good service! In regards to Customer Service, the workers here are nice it's just that this store never has more than 2 registers open, even when the lines are supper long, they only have 2 lines open!!!! They need to either open more registers and cashiers or hire more if they fon't have any available!!! Other than the long lines, this store isn't that bad. Okay, maybe it's because I haven't been to Smart&Finals in like... YEARS. My friends and I came here last night for groceries, and I guess I forgot that they sold groceries! I walked in like, GROCERIES!! My friends were like "They've always sold groceries!" Mango's were cheeeeap! Safeway sells them for 1.99 per mango, food maxx is about 88 cents or something like that, but they're really shitty mango's. This place has em 2 for a dollar! I was like yeeee! Lol! There was some guy stocking groceries, I never did get his name, but I asked him if they had military discount, and he said he wasn't sure and that they should, but he wasn't positive. He was really nice so I I thought I would include that in this review. Grabbed a couple mangos, some steak style bread (only 4 bucks for the value pack which had HELLA rolls), some cheese, and a pack of lunch meat. When I got to the cashier, I asked the asian lady if they had military discount, and she said "No, uhh I don't know." So we stood there for a few seconds looking at eachother, until I was like..."Well...can you check?" So she called a manager, but sadly they don't either! I spent close to $200 and they said I have to bag my own stuff and tried to charge me for their bags when I clearly told him I had my own then throws at me I have to bag my own stuff. Store is great when it is stocked, horrible on Sundays and late evenings when everyone has already gone through and done their weekly shopping. Prices are very affordable and there are usually snack packs or large family packs available of everything for those looking to save on cost and quantity. It's like a mini-Costco...without the beloved free samples or membership. * bananas - $0.59/ lb * 1 1/2 lbs black bean and corn salsa - $2.55 * POUNDS of cheeses for a couple of bucks (don't mess with a lactose-intolerant's love for cheese) * produce section looks BETTER than most Safeways--but there's no organic options Some days I'll just walk up and down every aisle in awe of the cheapness...because cheap things make me happy.
