Customer service was very nice to us. Each staff member pointed us to proper aisle or brought us directly to shelf. We didn't know there was a bigger SAF, as we usually shop at Mtn View and Santa Clara. But now we will frequent this one. It's more expansive and bigger freezer/cooler areas. The reason it wasn't a five star is they didn't have 2 herbs I needed, but the dept person double checked the back. But we will patronize this SAF "EXTRA" :) Don't laugh but in this day and age, the bags offered to purchade is a sturdy plastic bag. I made it here after shopping at the music store a few doors down. I had been to the Smart & Final in Vallejo and another one in Fremont. This one off Walnut was much better than the ones I had been to previously. You can pretty much find many of the staple foods here. The prices were comparable if not better than many of the grocery stores I have been too. Make sure to get their "card" which will get you the discount prices. For example -- White Nectarines, running at 2.49 per lb were only running $0.89 per lb with the card. Pretty awesome if you like White Nectarines like me. Many other foods here that I like so I know I will be coming back. Service was very good -- many of the cashiers and stockers greeted me hello and asked if I needed help finding anything. 1STAR for great prices! 1STAR for their first street brand fudgsicles ( OMG - they are so good, how can they be that much better than the real fudgsicle brand? But they ARE! ) MINUS 1 STAR for their not so fresh fruit. I bought 4 nectarines and each one I bit into was brown and over-ripe inside. MINUS 1STAR for their super, duper long lines. The management and workforce of the Fremont Walnut Avenue store richly deserve high honors for serving customers well, with the same floor plan as for example for Union City Smart and Final, but with smaller, more crowded floor area. No wonder it seems so congested at the checkout lines and some of the time in the produce area. Reasonably good produce specials, a few weeks ago it was 99 cents per pound at S&F for seemingly good green beans! At Safeway today on 9/11/15, the ad said $3 ($2.99) per pound for green beans. Parking not all that pleasant due to little shade and parking lot not level, but I can walk there with backpack and balanced canvas carry bags. Smarter faster warehouse store does describe the appeal of this store. Checkout lines have in the past blocked my desire to visit rest of the store (cannot get around front of the aisles) but I have looked through all the aisles. If you go down all the aisles, you can buy a variety of groceries and related items. A 50 pound sack, which I seldom buy myself, of potatoes or onions is very inexpensive. Prices are reasonable, but not quite as low as Costco on many items, for example cottage cheese at $5.19 which is $4.99 at Costco. Today on 9/11/2015 I saw 50 pound sacks of whole carrots for $3.99, i.e. 8 cents per pound for carrots. Checkout lines seem difficult to me; I do not agree with whoever called them fast and friendly. Lines get way backed up. If they did have a policy that cashiers deploy when customers are into the lines, that would work, but somehow it doesn't seem to happen that way in practice. Cashiers do not push the belt divider bars back at all so that the customers can separate their order from the previous order and next order. Cashiers have a weird, perhaps understandable, fetish about walking around to look under the grocery cart. Checkout line areas are very crowded and that even makes it difficult to move through the aisles. Today on 9/11/2015, my checkout experience was quite good as Rosario did a hot swap taking over from another cashier who went on break. The management still made her read the UPC code on the bottom of my shopping cart. One thing that I've noticed is that the parking lot is abnormally less level than many other lots. The cart will run away even while you are unloading into your vehicle. Smart & Final got me to go back in with an American Express rebate (were they mad at Costco?), so good that I hesitate to explain it, yet I have continued to do a lot of shopping at Smart & Final even after the rebate has been done with. read more

This place is by my work, so I decided to go and get a few groceries. The one star is for their deceptive advertising. When I was in line, I saw the cashier explaining to a customer why she couldn't get an item on sale, and she acknowledged that the way they advertise things is a bit tricky. Then came my turn. I corrected her on 2 large boxes of cereal, that had a big sign in red letters that said 5.49. She told me that is if you buy 2 or more boxes. I looked at the sign, and there, beside the HUGE red numbers was another sign with the sale price and in MUCH smaller letters, apparently were the details. Well, I didn't need cereal to last me through the millenium, I don't know who does. So, instead paid the full price. Their advertising is deceptive and I won't be back. read more

I really like this location compared to the other stores they have. This place has plenty of parking spaces. It's big and clean inside. However, there's only 2 cashiers (if you're lucky) to check you out. No matter what time of the day I come here, the line is long. The line seems like a wait for eternity. I have been shopping at Smart and Final ever since they had the store on Fremont Blvd., but this new store on Walnut "Rocks". I mostly eat fruits and veggies - the prices for produce are the some of the best in the Fremont area. Produce is fresh and colorful. The selection of meats is limited but I don't care because I don't eat very much meat. Chicken prices are great and the chicken is very fresh. Frozen fish prices are great and the big bag of it will last a while. Liquor section is well stocked, and the beer is cold - ice is available. Staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The manager handles all mistakes to the satisfaction of the customer. Overall, I find this store a great place with great prices. Minus one star for the meats but that doesn't matter, I don't eat very much meat. read more

This is the place my work likes to get phone quotes for cheap items, etc. for social events. I often have to wait a minimum of 15 minutes if I need quotes for a few items. I don't bother asking for more per call per day because I know the staff is too impatient and dislikes anyone who phone quotes. I think it's fair to be entitled to your opinion, but not if it bothers customers. The most recent quote showcases the customer service perfectly, because there is none. 1. I call S&F Fremont. A girl asks what I need help with. I say "price quotes on 4 items". She states, "I'll grab the price check runner for you" ----- Hold for 8 mins 2. A new girl answers and asks if I've been helped. I let her know the sitch. She says the same thing. ----- Hold for 5 min. 3. The price check runner answers. I let him know I needed prices and sizes (oz, how many pieces) for my items. He goes to check. ----- Hold for 7 min. 4. He comes back with only prices. I mention that I need sizes for the products. ----- Hold for 5 min. 5. He comes back with the size for only one product. I let him know that I was asking for ALL products. He says, "Seriously?" because it's too much trouble that he messed up and wasn't listening. ---- Hold for 6 min. **While I'm holding, it is assumed that he told a co-worker that I was being overly difficult, making him go back again and painting me in a bad light. She picks up and calls me names. Back on hold I go right after name-calling.** 6. He gives me the sizes, and I let him know someone picked up to harass me and that it was rude. He goes, "Sure". At this point, I just hang up because there's no point in bothering with a manager if these are the employees that work under them. I just messaged customer relations online instead. So if you like stores that are terribly run with cheap (quality) stuff, come over here. I'm glad to say I pay a premium for places like Costco and Amazon and have never nor will personally shop here. This is our goto store for the day to day dairy products. Milk, Yougart, Butter, Cheese, you name it. They have a wide range of these things with absolutely best prices in possibly whole Fremont. The signs and sections are very well organized. Unlike other stores in the neighborhood, the checkout system is really fast. Cashiers are very friendly and very fast. There are some Indian stores nearby but I think they try to scam by not showing the prices of items but this store is an example of economical groceries. Definitely my favorite one. read more

The staff and manager At Smart and final are incompetent. They do not know how to manage the front end of the store, where the checkers are. There are times when the lines at check out go clear down the product aisles. If you look or act impatience the clerk will give you crap? I've shopped here for years, until I started on Sprouts and Whole Foods eating. Just went back the other day and saw it was totally remodeled and looks pretty good! I just want to suggest that you have a dedicated lookout for the amount of garbage that collects in the front of the store (from the wind from other areas) and shopping cart collection. This cashier made an eye contact with me on register 1 today around 4:15 pm, I thought she wanted me to come towards her, she told me never called me I have to go back in line. Realized later may be she turned around to check how many customers are still in line. But she started talking to another guest about me and when I talked to her she was really rude. Well it is less packed than Costco that's for sure and some of their products are better priced than Costco as well but i think i'll stick with costco whenever possible. They suck with customer service and you can be standing in line for a very, very long time. Also, their produce is not as fresh as you'd think and I wish i wouldn't have been in such a rush when i went in to buy carrots in bulk because all three bags that i got from them were bad. They have them right under those automatic sprinklers and the water gets trapped inside the plastic bags which stains the carrots and makes them all rotten and slimy. Not a happy camper. I was dying to try out a juicer that a friend gave me and i couldn't, not with those nasty looking carrots. :( read more

She ignored the Asian family in front of me and then completely ignored me, instead asking the man behind me if Evian water tasted good. They had a whole conversation about it and she never even acknowledged me whatsoever, didn't even hand me my receipt. She just dumped it into my basket. Always able to find household supplies that are in bulk and cheap. The lines are always long but the cashierS are nice and friendly though. They need to open more lines and add more cashiers. This review is strictly for customer service or the lack thereof. I needed to wash some cleaning towels so I figured I would go to laundromat. Found I was short $1 in quarters and since I needed a baking item I decided to pop over to S&F. There were 2 lines open and I choose the wrong one. I get behind a women who ended up spending close to $400. The good thing at the time was the guy appeared to know his codes and was humming right along while I caught up on reading the magazines. I thought finally, oops wrong, she had to tell him she had more items on the bottom of her shopping cart. away he went to zoom zoom with his little instrument and say excuse me while he was leaning over punching stuff on his screen that was going off. Again I thought finally, oops, again the lady said you're the boss you have a key another 5 minutes and then 1 can of milk that was locked up was brought out (now I am wondering what kind of store am I in where I think formula has to be locked up??) Great finally, as she writes her check and then I said wait that is not mine...No she had more stuff that she was getting (I started thinking there has to be TV crew somewhere she is not leaving). Yes now me, I told him I needed my change to consist of a $5 bill and the rest in quarters. He gave me a $5 and 2 quarters so I just looked at him and said where is the rest of my change I need in quarters? Now I know you do not have to figure anything out any more the machine will tell you give her $6.51. He finally got it, he open the cash drawer where I saw a mound of quarters, he gives me $1 bill and said he doesn't have that many quarters, and turned to the next customer. Really????? read more

I used to go to Foodmax for groceries until Smart and Final showed up. Their prices are generally lower than Foodmax. Well staffed and less crowded as foodmax and costco. The prices are cheaper and a well rounded selection as compared to similar stores. I believe they have weekend deals where prices are further slashed. read more

One of my least favorite stores to go to. Shabby at best. The produce section is very small without much selection. I find their produce to be substandard at best. I love shopping for fruit, not here I feel like I am having to pick thru the worse to get a few edible items. Very little choice on brands or sizes. They have a lot of bakery items that are pretty good. No deli items. If you want to by snacks or Halloween candy they have tons of that stuff in bulk. Those aisles are very impressive. Be prepared to show them a lot of I.D. It feels like they believe every customer is trying to rip them off. I have never shopped somewhere that asked to see my ID on less then $40 worth of stuff. Cashier treated me like a common criminal and I have never been in trouble in my life. I feel sorry for anyone of color that shops here, I cannot imagine the crap they get trying to by a few things. And NO the cashiers are not friendly. The cashier was talking to me about how crappy smart and finial treats it's employees and how much she hates working there. I'm now officially a Smart & Final fan. There's a lot to like here. Oh, it's not perfect, but if you're looking for some serious variety and bulk products, this is the place to come. It gives Costco a good run for the money and has a much wider selection of canned goods, spices, baking products, candy and restaurant supplies. Smart & Final differs from your standard grocery store because they cater to small business and restaurants, but it's open to the general public too. If you're a serious cook or arranging a large party or event, you can save a bundle by shopping here and the bulk items will just make your life that much easier. Additionally, they have a good selection of large food containers (like large bucket's with lids for marinating), food wraps (plastic, paper, foil etc) to-go containers and serving / cooking utensils. The baking aisle is also worth mentioning because they carry flours, baking powders, starches, sugars, candy chips etc. in bulk packages. On the downside, as many have mentioned, the check out lines can get long. But if you hit them at off hours, you can breeze in and out of here. read more
