Compared to my old Pleasant Hill (Bay Area) Smart & Final, this place is huge. I found the vibe in this Extra! version to be somewhere in the middle between Raley's and Grocery Outlet. The time wasting disadvantage for me is that grocery stores take a while to develop muscle memory, so I floundered a bit looking for what I came in for. What was I here? I was on a semi-panic end of attending a pot luck dinner on short notice. I found something that worked, but next time I'm here, I'll have a plan. And I did manage to pick up an item or 2 to replenish some food supplies at home. I must have also come during a minor rush, as the 2 checkout lines were "look at my watch" busy. This store has a reasonably spacious parking lot. One challenge is making a left turn to get out of here, considering how busy Lake Tahoe Blvd. can be. I'm sure I'll be back as there will be other potlucks, and I can make this choice work better for me that way. read more

Since shopping at this store for almost two years, the quality, selection and customer service has dramatically gone down,. The selection of items have dwindled. Common staples are missing such as common soups, spices, baking supplies, etc. Not to mention they way the stocks are shelved ( haphazardly displayed and many items on shelves you cannot reached and organized in no specific or common sense order). You should be able to go to your local grocery store and get what you need every time. This store makes that impossible. The turnover in staff is almost out of control. Someone new everytime I go in there. The only positive think I can say at this point is there is a nice selection of produce and it is conveniently located. I really hope this store gets their act together. read more

Hello- my boyfriend and I were at this location on the morning of Monday 6/10/24. We were searching for hollandaise sauce. Two employees were in the middle of discussion, when we approached and asked if they carry that item. The young lady quickly advised "no we don't carry that item" and continued their conversationin spanish. Luckily a kind gentleman another employee by the name of Greg overhead and said "yes, I think I know what you are talking about, I'll go check". I want all the employees in that store including management to know that that Greg delivered excellent service to us. The other two employees didn't take the time to even look it up or check. I was very disappointed of that. We were visiting from Sacramento and really wanted to go back to our room to prepare our meal. Greg... you are the face of customer service! read more

Management has gone down since I started going there a few years ago. They no longer stand behind what they advertise. I went there to get some potatoes. 10lbs were supposedly on sale for $1.99. I arrived on Wednesday afternoon, the first date the sale was to have started. The shelf where the potatoes were supposed to have been sold was completely empty. I asked for a rain check and the manager told me they no longer issue them. So be prepared for bait and switch. read more

Horrible produce, beefed up prices, and rude management. The complete recipe for disaster. I spent $207 in a single shopping trip here a few days ago, and I shouldn't have been treated the way I was treated when I came to return the items that were subpar. Not only did the original cashier, Sara, double charge me for SEVERAL items (unfortunately I didn't notice until afterward, so it was too late to prove it), but their produce was sickly, to say the least, and I'm not going to make MYself sick consuming it. When I came to make the return this morning, the manager on duty, Ernesto, was extremely rude and condescending. He literally said "I can't see how all of this stuff could go bad in just one week" in a rude tone under his breath while processing my return. Umm, probably because the quality of your produce is shit? Extremely unprofessional, and clearly needs more managerial training so that he can be better equipped to do his job. This was my first and last shopping trip to Fart & Final. I should've listened to the locals. read more

Oh my lord I didn't know a grocery store could have bad customer service. The gentleman on register 1 was listening to music and sitting on the counter while scanning everyone's items. He was very rude and just kinda stood there awkwardly as if I was supposed to know that he wasn't going to put the groceries in the grocery bag. Not to mention he just kinda tossed the bags to me. I guess he just liked doing that because after he then proceeded to toss the all of the chips(causing them to break), the drinks( which broke the cap on our "naked strawberry banana smoothie") and tossed our tomatoes bruising them. We were in a hurry as we are not from town so we didn't have time to return the items that were broken but if you're reading this unless they changed the management that let this gentleman work there I would highly suggest stopping somewhere else. read more

Went for groceries when we got to Tahoe for vacation. Needed fresh veggies, fruit, etc. They were out of most vegetables and fruits. What they had was old, and rotten. The produce guy was there and said he was out of product and couldn't help me. Got back with stuff for dinner and the red pepper had mold inside. So disappointed because the store in my home town is always good. read more

Trash seems to be an issue at this location. Which does not help with keeping Tahoe Blue. If the employees can't do it. Maybe hire someone to do it? Every time I have stopped I have taken trash with me in my vehicle. We all can always do better read more

The only other Smart & Final I'd been to was the one in Old Town Oakland. As one might expect a discount grocery store in city like that, the franchise had more than its share of issues. So it was with no small level of trepidation that I went in with my wife to this locale. We had just checked into our Airbnb rental, and realized we wanted to stock up, so we drove south on South Lake Tahoe Boulevard looking for a Raley's I'd noticed on Google Maps. Eventually we ran out of patience (it was in fact just a couple of blocks more), and stopped here. At first glance, the store seemed little different that its Bay Area counterpart. Marginally clean floors, boxes strewn about, some questionable-looking characters milling about. But once you got past all of that, you realize that this place has quite a bit to offer. We were able to stock up on fruits and vegetables, cereal, milk, beer, meat and dessert items for just under $100. And it wasn't like there was just one choice of the above - in fact there was an entire endcap dedicated to tortilla shells. Unfortunately the checkout process was far more arduous than it should've been, so we were a bit worn out when we finally left the store. But I'll say the visit took care of about 80% of our needs for the week. read more

I was honestly disappointed to hear that the Staples building was going to be turned into Smart and Final because all the S&Fs I'd been to in the past have been pretty dingy and had poor selection of food. So, when I went in yesterday just to check it out, I was very happy to see a totally different store than any other Smart and Final I'd ever been to before. The store is very clean and well lit and there is a good selection of produce including a lot of organic options. There are also a lot of other healthy, organic, and higher quality foods for really good prices. I saw some things that I could definitely get for less at Grocery Outlet, but the prices seemed to be way better than Safeway and the selection was comparable. When I only have time to make one stop for everything on my grocery list, I will definitely start going to S&F rather than Safeway. read more

Thieves! Terrible customer service. Long lines, extremely slow and rude checkers, none worse than Joe. Joe should not be dealing with customers in any way at all, ever. Talking badly about management and his coworkers, talking under his breath about customers, and even me as I walked away. But, that wasn't the worst part. The worst part was that multiple items were priced differently than they were rang up (not the first time that this has happened here, but definitely the worst). When I pointed the price difference out, Joe stated the prices had been changed and nothing could be done about it. He basically called me a liar, and in one case of the misrepresented prices, the price was labeled on a large sign in front of the checkout aisle. Crackers were on sale for $1.69, and rang up as $1.89. He laughed at me and said 'its only a 20 cent difference.' He did not change the price, even though it was labeled on a four foot sign, directly in front of him. I would say that Joe is the problem, had I not shopped here before and had a very similar experience. Always with the bait and switch price scam. That's on management! If the owner of this establishment reads this, I would suggest cleaning house and firing everyone, as they all seem to be part of a much larger and more toxic issue. At very least, get rid of the manager that has your staff believing that it is okay to treat customers in such a manner. Tahoe is way too small of a town to treat people this way. Whether you're trying to gouge the tourists this way, or just rip off the locals, this kind of treatment won't fly in a small town like this. I only go here when it's too busy at Raleys, Safeway or Grocery Outlet. I'd rather wait in a long line for good service and better products than to be treated so badly AND then ripped off. I suggest you all do the same. Boycott these thieves! read more

Great Prices! They don't charge you that tourist fee. I can find anything from vegan cheese to organic produce. Gluten free bread to sugar free chocolate almonds. My personal favorite is their hot roasted fresh chickens. When ever I can't find an item they more than happy to help find my item. read more

I had to throw away most of our produce. The produce was empty on New Years Eve. The shelves were literally 80% empty. The staff did know much about products especially produce. I asked a guy if he knew where the cooked sliced ham was located, and he said, "I think over there if we had it... actually no, we don't." I found it myself. Not enough checkers, and customers were confused on where to go because the quick check was the second lane in. I would really like to see S & F survive in South Lake, so that is why I am writing this poor review. Please improve store conditions and produce! read more

In general, the store feels like it needs a bit of an update. It has a strange grimy feeling that I couldn't shake off while I shopped here for my week's worth of groceries. Sure, it has a lot of organic produce with decent prices and a dollar can really stretch here. One does have to look for the deals amid cluttered aisles while also making sure to check expiration dates. I'd recommend coming here in the early hours or near the end of its operating hours to avoid the long lines. They don't hire enough employees to deal with the crowds and lines can be a nightmare when there's only one lane opened for people with more than 15 items and one express lane open. read more

No clerk has ever done this to me before. I run and own a business but currently Im on government assistant through WIC for my infant. I didnt want to be on government assistance and I am embarassed. I organized my goods per check, which were all wic approved. Then was harrassed three times by the possibly asian american, female clerk that my signature was not exactly like my packet. My packet is my legal identification form for Wic. If she really thought I was forging a signature she could have asked for my ID, which would have been far politer than harassing me multiple times. I finally told her, my signature is my signature. I will file a formal compliant and find out her name. I was very embarrassed. read more

Have recently moved and learned about Smart & Final in So Lake Tahoe - hoorah! Shopped on regular basis at S&F in San Diego, and always so pleased w/customer service. But, this Smart & Final is definitely different. Last week had inefficient cashier, Rose. And this week cashier, Terry, was very rude. She checked my items and left them on counter. I said I was new to So Lk Tahoe, and asked if I should bag them myself, and she responded, "our store is different. You can bag or you can wait until I get around to it". Whoops! I'll continue shopping at Smart & Final because I like the fresh looking produce, and fellow in dairy dept. was very pleasant. Think I'll just bring my own bags next time, and bag!!! read more

So for starters, I absolutely love this store. All the depts. I went to in here were very kind and showed a great selection of items at a reasonable price. Also, I had bumped into a few exemplary employees yesterday and wanted to commend them! Over in meat, I absolutely loved Tarik and thought he was funny and had a very positive attitude. Also, Gradyn over in the vegetable dept had a great attitude towards my needs and had opened a box for me when there was no more on the shelf. That was definitely cool. The store in general was pretty sweet and ill definitely come back. Anyone In Tahoe should seriously consider this place for their weekend grocery trip. The only thing I had a gripe with is the outdated merch. In dairy, it didn't look very good and things were a bit under stocked. Other than that, awesome store. read more

One star instead of zero because the prices are pretty good, zero for customer service. There are a couple cashiers that should be fired... Amanda should absolutely be fired! I work in customer service oriented fields and if I treated my customers like Amanda treated my wife I would not have a job. My wife went in and purchased a large amount of stuff and forgot one item and went back in within minutes. The item was on sale but with a minimum purchase and Amanda refused her the sale price even though the purchase made 5 minutes earlier met the purchase requirements, Amanda made no effort to make the customer happy. This is unacceptable. I have had more than one "bad experience" with customer service at this place and only return for the pricing but realize that customer service in this place is a major gamble. Amanda should look for non customer service work and this place should help her out with walking papers. read more

I have told store employees 3 different times that the plastic bottled water should not be outside in the sun; it becomes toxic. It's still in the sun. Yesterday at 4:27pm · DANGER!!!! LET EVERYONE WHO HAS A WIFE/GIRLFRIEND/ DAUGHTER KNOW PLEASE! Bottled water in your car is very dangerous! On the Ellen show, Sheryl Crow said that this is what caused her breast cancer. It has been identified as the most common cause of the high levels of dioxin in breast cancer tissue.. Sheryl Crow's oncologist told her: women should not drink bottled water that has been left in a car. The heat reacts with the chemicals in the plastic of the bottle which releases dioxin into the water. Dioxin is a toxin increasingly found in breast cancer tissue. So please be careful and do not drink bottled water that has been left in a car. Pass this on to all the women in your life. This information is the kind we need to know that just might save us! Use a stainless steel canteen or a glass bottle instead of plastic! This information is also being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center ... No plastic containers in microwaves. No plastic water bottles in freezers. No plastic wrap in microwaves. Dioxin chemical causes cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to cells in our bodies. Don't freeze plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic. Recently the Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating food in the microwave using plastic containers..... This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat and plastic releases dioxin into the food. Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Pyrex or ceramiccontainers for heating food... You get the same result, but without the dioxin.. So, such things as TV dinners, instant soups, etc., should be removed from their containers and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's safer to use tempered glass, such as Pyrex, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the styrene foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.... Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Cling film, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead. This is an article that should be share to anyone important in your life! Just be careful!!! read more
