I just got the worst haircut in my entire life...the stylist Yoon was friendly, but she just destroyed my self-confidence and my backside. I did tell her that the backside looked uneven, but she waved off my concerns and told me that it did look even. Perhaps there was some sort of miscommunication--I do see she means that the shape looks okay, but, there are noticeable patches, and the transition from the top of the backside to the bottom isn't smooth. You probably won't get the best haircut of your life here, but you'll get a serviceable, fairly cheap and convenient haircut close to campus. I was able to walk in at 4 PM on a Friday and only had to wait 5 minutes to get in the the chair. The lady cutting my hair was very nice and did seem to take care in cutting my hair. But when she asked me if I had ever considered getting a perm halfway through my cut, I knew I had made a terrible mistake. Ultimately, my hair didn't look amazing, but it wasn't messed up in any way. But I've had way better haircuts that are just tighter and cleaner. For $18, it's not a bad value. The haircut is done dry (they don't wash your hair). If you want a Korean-style haircut, this might be the place for you, otherwise there are probably better options. read more

As an Asian male, I've struggled for years to find a go-to barber in Providence. Never been one for fancy salons while places like Supercuts were always hit-or-miss for me. Eventually, I got into the habit of pushing off haircuts until I could make trips to Boston. A few months ago, I finally decided to stop by this unassuming barber shop after reading some Yelp reviews. I am so excited to say that my barber search is finally over! Chang is a sweet lady who is a natural at cutting Asian hair (most of her customers seem to be Asian though she definitely has non-Asian clientele as well). I prefer a pretty plain haircut, which Chang is great at, though many of her customers go for edgier looks with good results :) Chang is patient and very careful with her work. I've always tried hard to find a real haircut place that can handle the delicate (lol) nature of Asian guy hairs, and as much as I hate to leave my trusted hairstylist in Boston, I find that Smart Cuts offered a similar level of technique and style that is hard to find, especially for less than $20. This place is primarily operated by a single person, and is fairly hidden unless you are looking for it. The hair stylist is a nice Korean lady who's no stranger to the hair cutting business and while she may not cut with surgical precision (as you may tell, I'm still very biased), she is very careful and knows how to avoid the fresh hair-cut look that plagues many of us. My only concern was that I had asked her to be creative, give me a hair style that's different than what I have currently, and she pretty much just shortened my hair...granted it was neater and more clean, but I was really disappointed that nothing much had changed. So overall, my suggestion is that if you're going to Smart Cuts, definitely have a particular style in mind. read more

Ladies, if you have long, thick hair, do not go here. This was one of the worst cuts I have ever had. I only gave 3 instructions, 1 of which was leave the bottom layer thick, and she repeated this back to me even as she insisted on using the thinning shears on the bottom layer of my hair. I'm disappointed especially because this is a problem that can't be fixed aside from months and months of growing my hair to its natural thickness. Other reviews say she is a good barber, so that's great. I'm giving her 2 stars purely because she seems nice (though she ignored my request), I liked her shampoo massage, and I like funky, old shops. Very good barbershop! The lady who cut my hair was very nice and although it's a small shop, I find it quite nice inside. I didn't ask for anything extravagant to be done on my hair, so I can't tell if she's skilled or super skilled, but she made my hair look nice and did everything I asked so that's 5/5 in my book. To top it all off it was only $16 before tip. I will mention that it's probably best to make an appointment because they can get quite busy. I'll definitely be back. Chang is amazing!! She clearly knows what she is doing and listens to what you want. I went in because I didn't want to pay $40+ dollars for an undercut and had heard that Smart Cuts was great for men's haircuts. But it's also great for women's haircuts! Mrs. Chang is a Korean lady who knows how to cut Asian hair. According to her, she has been working as a hair designer past 10 years or so in RI. She was in Newport, RI in the past. Since about 2 years ago, she opened her shop in Providence, RI and enjoys working with people. As I mentioned earlier, since she is korean, and for that fact, I think she has a tendency of giving male asian a hair cut that is more trendy among Koreans. Call in ahead if you are getting the hair cut towards the end of the day, as people tend to come late and it gets crowded there. Recommend this hair shop for the college/graduate students who has failed from super cut, etc. read more

Quality haircut at a reasonable price? Yes, that's a thing here! I used to go around trying different barbors for haircuts, but this one is great. This was the worst haircut I've ever had. On top of that, the experience was horrible. I made the appointment by phone, but when I arrived on time I was asked to wait because there were two guys there already. My haircut started 25 mins later than my appointment time. I told her I have thick long hair and I wanted it trimmed 5 inches and some layers but it didn't seem like she understood English very well. At last I gave up, and said "well just trim my hair 5 inches shorter, that's it." When she was cutting my hair, she had to stop many times to answer the phone. As more customers coming in, she just rushed and didn't even fully blow dry my hair. She didn't wash my hair before the cut either. And I was charged $40. Plus tips. The bottom of my hair came out so bad it's not even close to straight. And it was cut much shorter than what I asked, so I couldn't even go to another hairdresser to fix it. If I could give zero star I would. Ladies, RUN AWAY if you don't want your hair ruined. And you can get much better service and haircut somewhere else that is also cheaper than $40. read more

Chang is fast and great with the haircuts, especially Asian hair. Incredibly cheap too, $16 for a cut. I went to much more expensive salons for a while before Smartcuts opened up, and I can definitely say that her haircuts are of equal or superior quality (if you have Asian hair at least, I don't see too many non-Asians there). Used to be able to just walk in, but now have to make appointments at least a day ahead of time (and that's only if you're ok with getting your haircut around 5 or 5:30 even though she closes at 6). The other haircutter there is a-ok too, I got a haircut with him when I walked in the other day and she was booked. He is clearly less experienced and slower but he still does a good job, and really works to give you what you want. read more

Called ahead on a Saturday, no problem getting an appointment for later in the afternoon. Arrived a few minutes early and was seen right on time, even though there was another guy waiting ahead of me (good thing I made that appointment--sorry to the bro who was waiting). Got the dude rather than Mrs. Chang. He did a great job: listened to what I wanted, used his judgment to make sure it turned out looking good, and really took his time. Got a cool-looking taper on the neck and sideburns I've never had done before (usually at other places they ask "do you want it square or round?") but it looks fab. I gave Chang very little to go on in terms of what I wanted, and she still gave me a terrific haircut. She was extremely friendly, and the haircut was both fast and reasonably priced ($18).
