I saw Angela and she was amazing! My hair was very damaged so I faced the reality of cutting and making it darker which was not a big deal as I had short hair most of my life. I showed her pictures of what I wanted as far as color goes. She explained everything as she was doing it and offered an honest opinion of what she thought would work. I got my hair cut here yesterday and I could not be happier! I was just sitting around yesterday and the urge to have all my hair cut off hit me, so I got on Yelp to find a hair salon close by. After reading the reviews here, I thought I'd give it a try and absolutely loved it! It's a really small salon, but super comfortable and everyone there was super friendly. Texas (she's from Texas) cut my hair and I can honestly say it's one of the best haircuts I've ever had. I went in with shoulder length hair and requested a really short style, sort of described what I wanted and Texas more than delivered! For the first time in my life, a hairdresser actually looked at my hair's natural growth pattern and cut my hair in a way that complimented it. I have been to quite a few salons over the years and can honestly say that this Smart Hair Studio is my new favorite. I initially searched on Google for a salon that offers organic highlights. I currently live in Manhattan and after reading the reviews and browsing their website I decided to schedule an appointment. My first appointment was a haircut with Tanya. I have curly, wavy hair. Tanya is very good at listening and will make recommendations based on your natural hair, shape of face, etc. She gave me a perfect hair cut. I don't typically style my hair but will simply use curl lotion and dry my hair with a diffuser. My second appointment was for half head of organic highlights - 2 colors. I showed her a picture of what I was looking for but Tanya helped me to be realistic. Obviously the model in the picture was all 'made-up' and I know I can't keep up with that look. She also suggested for my hair color applying organic highlights that were more natural versus artificial-looking. Tanya was on point and gave me beautiful highlights. All the staff are down to earth and very sweet. I love this place and will definitely be a regular customer of Tanya's as long as I'm living in NYC :o) If you've never been to Windsor Terrace you'll love the neighborhood too! read more

To say that I am IN LOVE is an understatement. For starters it was super easy to book an appointment online. Once I arrived the salon granted my appointment immediately. There was no wait time at all. I explained to woman exactly what color I wanted and how I wanted my highlights to look. She completed my look effortlessly and quickly. I was in and out in under three hours with a brand new color and shiny highlights. I want to stress how it was done CORRECTLY! I've been to numerous places where they damage your hair and/or completely ruin be highlights by just bleaching large chicks of hair. What a gem in the neighborhood! I moved here almost two years ago and discovered this place on Google because t is walking distance from my apartment. This is a gem of a place. Tanya always gives me amazing haircuts and she is a great listener. I think she is also part mindreader because she always reads me well and gives me the style I am looking for but can never quite put into words. Out of desperation when Tanya was completely booked up, I've tried other salons a few times in the Park Slope area only to be very disappointed. I found this place through a local parenting message board. Tanya got some major raves, and I needed a haircut in the neighborhood, having finally accepted that I just can't manage to get into Manhattan to get a haircut anymore. The store--"studio" is the right name for it; there are two stations, one for Tanya and one for her partner Angela. The atmosphere is somewhat casual, but calm, warm, and overall just fun and energetic. Tanya took my haircut so seriously--each step of the process was discussed at length so that she could make sure I was on board with her plans. My hair is long, thick and curly, and she approached it with the calm confidence of a total professional. The cut she gave me is superb. Even at the end of the haircut after it was all dry, she showed me some different ways of pulling it up, and we decided to cut a few more pieces around my face because after saying I wanted to be able to have a ponytail, I was convinced that I could handle it, because she explained exactly how to deal with it at home. Also--Previously, I never understood why women like to chat with their hairdressers. I've never had a conversation longer than a few minutes with one--until Tanya. I just got my hair cut here for the first time and I was so happy! The salon itself was cute, comfortable, and pleasant. Professional, but very welcoming. Ashley, who washed my hair, was super friendly and fun, and Angela, who cut it, was great. I came in without any real idea of what I wanted, because I'm clueless about this stuff, and she very helpfully (and non-judgmentally, which is hard to find in Manhattan!) walked me through the different opinions. We picked a pixie cut, which she did beautifully. Halfway through, she stopped and consulted me about how exactly I wanted my bangs. Awesome! Usually I feel like I'm in the way of the stylist; she made me feel comfortable and happy with the process. Love the cut, love the people, love the place. And the price was good, too! It has taken me months to get to a place where I feel like I can write a fair review. I went in at the beginning of summer to lighten my very dark hair. Most of my hair was over saturated from a not great dye job I had received elsewhere during the winter and my roots were the mousey brown I was born with. I knew I needed help and carefully chose Smart Hair Studio. I immediately wrote them an email explaining my situation in detail and stating that I wanted to lighten and even my hair for the summer. I immediately got an appointment and was thrilled. When I arrived I was ushered over by my "color specialist" who actually was a junior stylist who hadn't even seen my email. When I mentioned my email the other girl on duty said "yeah, I saw it. You wrote a novel about your hair". So why didn't she show my 'novel" (actually a paragraph, this review is a novel) to the woman who would be attending me? Clearly the women attending me, the junior stylist, had no idea what she was doing. She asked the other stylist on duty for her opinion who walked over to me, looked at my hair for exactly 3 seconds and said "strip it" with so much disdain I should of walked out then and there. After that the other stylist stayed away while the junior stylist fried every inch of my head and turned my hair bright, ugly, brassy, orange. She kept trying to fix it and only made it worse and worse. She knew it was going wrong and the other person on staff only stood in the background making faces at the condition of my hair. When it was finally over 4+ hours later my hair was ruined, my scalp was burned and my confidence in hair professionals was gone. Worst of all, I was charged over $300. She knew my hair was ruined because she said to call her in a few days, like I would ever let her near me again! What I found most surprising was that she didn't call me. That is not the way to build a customer base. Like I said before, it has taken me months to be able to even write a review this nice. As I am typing I am getting upset just reliving it. At least 4 months later I can finally wear my hair down again. read more

Back in April, for reasons I shall keep between myself and those "in the know", I desperately needed a haircut and had to "cheat" on the hairdresser I've gone to for years (who also happened to be a great friend), so a friend suggested I make an appointment with Tanya @ Smart Hair Studio. Having gone to the same person for years, to say I was hesitant sliding into that chair was a very light way to describe what I was feeling but the moment I saw that smile, all my anxiety subsided. She managed to combine what I had in mind with what she had in mind for me in such a way that we were both very happy with the result. Normally, you "cheat" on your hairdresses once but for me, it became a clear point that I was looking for a new "relationship." So I came back in June, for a haircut and some highlights... And yesterday, I came back again... Oh and did I mention that I live in Philadelphia? Driving 1.5 hrs for a haircut can mean one of two things: 1. Smart Hair Studio rocks, or 2. I took a chance on a new place close by my house due the good reviews. I got a cut from Angela. She was sweet, seemed sharp and bright and felt confident going into the cut. I told her what I wanted, which was a trim and to keep the length. I am still not sure what happened but I don't like the cut at all. So much so I had to go back for her to fix it. She focused the cut on the back and sides below my ears, so much so that where I had a full head of hair, I now have a very thinned out back and bottom. She used the sheering and razoring a lot, which on my thin hair, makes it look worse. The "length" is still there but it's so thin, that when I put it up in a pony tail today, instead of having a nice thick pony tail, it looks like a deer tail. Due to the thinned out bottom, the top looked like a mushroom. I have straighter hair on top and wavy hair on the bottom, which I warned her about, but it did not seem to change the way she cut my hair. When I went back for her to fix it, she was sweet and gracious, not charging me for it of course, but she sheered it more, so now I get these little wispy single strands of hair that get caught in my eye and mouth, because they are not surrounded by other pieces of hair. I felt that there wasn't really any attention paid to how each cut will affect how that piece of hair falls. Another red flag was when she styled it, she styled it the way she wanted it, (Pin straight) instead to doing it the way I normally do my hair (Big and wavy) so I was not able to see what it really looked like until I went home. She said she had to do it this way. They are sweet, kind there and I believe she wanted to give me what I wanted, but I felt like it was cut only how she learned how to cut it, with the skills not being strong and flexible enough to cut "out of the box" to meet the needs to a difficult head of hair. read more

Got my eyebrows threaded and a facial yesterday by Stella, who was both professional and informative throughout the service. She took my appointment at very short notice, which I was grateful for. My eyebrows turned out exactly how I wanted, and she listened to my request to leave as much as hair as possible because I'm currently growing them out. As for the facial, I wish there had been more focus on extraction, because I had to do some myself once I got home after the service. The products used on me were good quality, but at the end of the day, I think it's a bit too expensive for what you get. read more

I made an appointment for Sunday to touch up my roots, basically to bleach them. The procedure itself is not the most pleasant one, with a burning sensation on your head for at least an hour and a half, of course I was aware that, but at least I was expecting to leave the salon satisfied with the results. When a walk-in customer came in for a haircut, I was abandoned at the far corner of the salon, with my scalp burning, and as a result my hair overbleached and fried. Why would you make appointments with only two hairstylists working, if you can not give your full attention to a customer. It is very unprofessional. In the end I was so upset that instead of complaining to the manager, I wanted to leave as soon as possible and never come back there. That experience completely ruined my day. If you are thinking of going there, think twice. I do not recommend this place to anyone. They are unprofessional and inattentive. read more

I walked-in yesterday hoping to get a quick trim. I never like my haircuts and tend to avoid pretentious salons but I was really happy with the outcome here. Junior stylist Ashley took me right away, listened to all my concerns and gave me the trim and shape that I needed. It's also a very relaxed atmosphere. Also, Ashley was just great and it was a major bonus that her "junior stylist" skills were impeccable yet the price was 20% cheaper for her services. I'd definitely return. read more

Went for color and cut. Usually I don't like going to new places but the reviews on yelp and the fact that they are so close to home convinced me to try them. My stylist was really nice but I felt like my color and cut was being rushed. Liked my color when I left but when I got home and washed and blow dried it myself I noticed the left side of my hair. (The part she started rushing on) looked like cheetah print. My haircut wasn't anything special. It looked pretty much the same as when I walked in. Went to Sally's a couple days later and bought a dark glaze to hide the cheetah print and tone down the brightness of my hair. Don't know why they didn't tone my hair. Paid 230+ for nothing special. Guess I will start trooping it back to manhattan to get my money's worth. My cousin went a couple weeks later and said she was also rushed went home with frizzy hair and didn't like the brightness in her hair either. I will be toning it for her this weekend. read more

I *love* Smart Hair Salon! I have long, wavy, frizzy, crazy hair and am very picky about who touches it. I was excited that a new salon opened up in my neighborhood (could this mean no more trekking to the city to get a haircut?), so I decided to check it out. I made an appointment for a trim. And that's exactly what I got - a trim. "Wow!", I thought. "She really listened!". A few months later, I made another appointment, this time for a cut - 1.5" off. For me, that's a lot because of the waves in my hair. And that's what Angela took off! AND she gave me styling advice for my upcoming wedding. I took her advice to a salon in the city that I'd already made an appt for and it was perfect. I have just made my third hair-cutting appointment here. My second trip - this time the husband's reaction was "Very nice!" and "I like what they've done with your fringe!". If you do the maths it's seven months since I was last here which sounds bad until I point out that I wanted long easily tie up-able hair over the summer and the cut itself looked good enough as it was growing not to need titivating. So, they've extended the actual salon area which gives it a more airy, and frankly a more professional fee and Ashely gave my hair the same attention as last time with just the right amount of chat - she's got herself a regular, albeit infrequent, client in me. read more

Always great service (polite, knowledgeable, helpful and extremely competent)! I get my mani/pedi from Stella - awesome job, she knows her stuff. Ashley and Anna do my hair - both ladies are fantastic and never fail to make me look like a "rock star", lol.
