Another one of those annual holiday get togethers with friends. This year we visited Smash'N Pizza (former location of Nonna Marie's). Smash'N Pizza a great little upbeat neighborhood pizzeria on Union Blvd. In Totowa feels fun from the second you walk in. It's the kind of spot that's just as good for a casual slice as it is for a laid‑back burger with friends. The room is limited in size but buzzing, with bright red and black splashed across the walls, a few chairs and tables, and décor carefully planned so the whole space feels energetic and modern. Logos and graphics are scattered throughout, giving the restaurant a playful, branded vibe that makes it look and feel like a cool little Italian hangout rather than a typical slice joint. Pizza, which we shared as an appetizer is the star, with pies that come out hot, crisp, and flavorful, piled with fresh toppings if that's your choice, and a sauce that tastes like it was made that morning. As for me, I always prefer a plain cheese pie. Right alongside the pizza, the burgers were surprisingly fantastic too, juicy and well‑seasoned, and the menu branches out into plenty of other tempting choices to accomodate everyone's taste. I tried the double cheeseburger, along with fries and onion rings, and would certainly recommend giving it a try. Service and hospitality were on point, quick and friendly. And being greeted like a regular, even on my first visit, and checking in often without hovering was appreciated. The overall atmosphere made the place feel welcoming and relaxed, turning a quick lunch into the kind of experience people look forward to repeating. BTW: Smash'N Pizza is a BYOB and has off street free parking. Thank you to Roberto (Robert) and staff for a nice afternoon. We will certainly be back. 12/13/2025

I came here with some friends in the summer and it was really nice to sit outside and eat our food. I got a burger and gosh, I must have ate that thing in 4 bites, cause it was that delicious. I really want to come back and try their pizza.

Smash'n Pizza just opened up and I had to stop by for the grand opening event! The staff is super welcoming and friendly, has the vibe of an old school pizza place with a modern edge. I got the smash'n house burger, onion rings, wings, chicken tenders and fries. (Don't judge me, I was hungry!) Smash burger was great, their smack sauce is out of this world on it, I would ask for extra on the side next time. Wings were delicious, great bite, crunchy and just pulled apart. Tenders were definitely to my liking, paired great with the smack sauce as well! And what's there to say about onion rings and fries? I never had one I didn't like. Definitely will need to come back and try the pizza, very happy this joint opened up in North Jersey!

I don't think there is an item on their menu you won't love!!! The smash n house burgers, salad, crazy nonna pies, their wings and fries, mac and cheese... everything is beyond delicious!! And you can't beat their service... whether you eat in or have it catered, Robert makes sure everything is made just the way you like it! If you have not visited this town gem... put it on your must go list. You won't be disappointed!

Brand new spot. Got burgers, marg pizza, and chicken fingers/fries/onion rings Best value for your money, hands down. Service was friendly and helpful when we had some questions. They gave my baby a sticker so they won her over quickly. There's a parking lot so you don't have to worry about street parking. They have soda, Snapple, cans/bottles. Super clean. Highly rec

The food was amazing. The staff was cool. I would definitely recommend visiting and having a bite if you're in the area. I had an onion burger and every bite was proportioned perfectly.

I have to start off with the food was fantastic, like a true smash burger. I got the double onion smash, and my husband got the double regular smash. Cooked perfectly, perfect crust, melty cheese, smashed onions, 10/10. These are true smash burgers. I got the bacon jam cheese fries. Bonus points for being shoe string fries. The basket was GIANT. I'm thinking for $9 it's gonna be light on the bacon and cheese. NO. These fries were SAUCED! My husband got the specialty fries of the week the Chimichurri fries. He loves Chimichurri and he housed the burger, the fries and then got a slice to go. We travelled about an hour and a half to get here because I saw their Instagram videos and the food just looked too good to not try and they seemed like they have fun there. We spoke with the owner Rob who came out to check on everyone eating in. Which who does that anymore? That blew my mind! You can tell this guy takes pride in what he's doing. Apparently they've only been opened a little over a month yet there was a guy in there with his kids and the owners asking him about their kid's sports and all that. It was packed when we walked in at 1pm on a Sunday. This place is going to be a neighborhood spot I can tell just by the vibe and how the owner was genuinely customer focused. He was so kind to hook us up with some treats for the road which was a total shock. (Thank you!!!) Even if the food was terrible (which it was NOT, I'm giving this spot 5 stars) the staff, and owner would redeem that. We will ABSOLUTELY be back without a doubt.

This place is the real deal. I had a double smash and jam and cheese fries. This place is definitely serving the best smash burgers around. Also serving great pizza and extra crispy wings. Owner and staff super nice making you feel like family.

Pizza was okay; the wings felt like they came from the freezer and tossed in a Sysco bag of BBQ sauce.

The interior was a quirky mix of hand-painted nautical scenes and a shrine to -- who I presumed was -- a wildly successful collegiate wrestler, Mean Gene Mills. "Do you like spicy food?" a voice piped up from behind me. "Yeah, sure." I replied, turning to see a sprightly older man sporting wide glasses and a leather jacket. I'd noticed him earlier rolling up on a three-wheeled motorcycle as I approached the place, parking it neatly around the side. "I'd go for the Chili Dog and the Big Kahuna," he suggested with a grin, adding, "The chili's not spicy but it's damn good." As it happened, I'd already ordered a pair of chili dogs but I nodded appreciatively. "I'll have to try the Kahuna next time." I said. The man introduced himself as the owner and brother of the locally lionized Gene the Pinning Machine. I could see he was proud of his brother's legacy and this hotdog spot he seemed to view as a hobby. "I'm in real estate mostly," he explained. "The hotdog stand is just for fun. I always wanted a spot by the river, saw this place and snapped it up." And he spoke of it like a hobbyist. He told me about his sausage guy up in upstate New York who hand-makes the dogs, sausages, and casings fuel his culinary creations. While some joints boil or fry their hot dogs, he opts for a series of convection ovens--air-frying them. A quirky and distinctive twist I haven't seen before. It's that hobbyist's eye, as I am saying. We chatted a bit longer before he ducked behind the counter to check in with the kids working the line. He greeted each one with a warm chummy hug and their faces lit up at the sight of him. It was clear from the easy banter that he's a boss who's genuinely well-liked. Now, about that dog: An air-fried hot dog feels a little out there--like baking one, you'd figure it'd dry out. But honestly? It wasn't half bad. Crisp on the outside, yet still decently average on the hot-dog-o-meter. Definitely a step up from the boiled variety. The chili, though? Hands down, phenomenal. That, along with the sausage, comes from his guy up in Syracuse -- the same one crafting those hot dogs. Is it worth hauling a box truck to upstate New York for? Hard to say. But it's absolutely worth my five-minute drive to Woodlandd Park to eat. The prices feel right in line with what you'd expect from a boutique roadside spot like this. The interior's compact--think a pair of small tables and a counter. Out back back there's a small deck with a few tables and chairs overlooking the river. Could be a sweet spot when the weather's kind. The menu is substantial with the addition of an ice cream bar, all Gelotti which is a North Jersey staple. The hotdog is a pretty humble food-stuff, if you like them then you won't be disappointed here. It's worth a stop for lunch if you're ever in town.

I went back a few days after my first visit because they were THAT good. When I walked in, I was greeted by the owner, Wayne Mills. We had a lovely conversation about how he opened Lover Dogs and how Lover Dogs has been his dream retirement. On the walls, there are photos of his brother Gene who was a renowned wrestler in the 80s. Wayne gave me a tour of the outdoor patio and the downstairs area that he plans to expand for breakfast/brunch. The patio area overlooks a nice view of the Passaic River. After the little tour, I ate my all the way hot dog. Lover Dogs hot dogs are air-fried which I thought was very unique. The chilli sauce is out of this world. Super flavorful and perfectly seasoned. Wayne explained that he spent a long time perfecting the recipe and worked with several people to develop. The hot dogs are Hoffman brand which he discovered when he visited his brother many years ago at Syracuse University. It was really nice to see Wayne pay homage to the previous building owners with a framed collage on the wall. I am a local history nerd so I really loved seeing all of the old photos dating back to the early 1900s. Please visit this awesome local business!

There is outdoor and indoor dining but since it was blazing hot out I opted to stay inside in the cool AC. Came for brunch on a Sunday so had to try their sangria. It was really refreshing and perfect for a warm day. For entrees, we ordered the short rib hash, chicken and waffles, and the steak and eggs. I had a little of each, but my favorite was the short rib hash. Great flavor and the sauce was fantastic. The steak had a perfect cook on it, and the fried chicken was crispy and flavorful as well. The server was friendly and extremely attentive. He recommended a good dessert which we ended up splitting. When in doubt go with the chocolate brownie Esther vanilla ice cream !

We didn't have a reservation, but they were still able to seat us in the dining room as long as we could wrap up before 1:30, which we appreciated. I wasn't super hungry so we shared the crispy cauliflower and lamb ribs from the appetizer menu. The crispy cauliflower was excellent -- hot, actually crispy, and not drowning in sauce which I really appreciated. The lamb ribs came over labneh (a yogurt base) and the first plate arrived with the lamb cold. I asked our waitress if that was intentional and she said only the labneh should be cold. They immediately replaced it with a fresh order and handled it really well, which I appreciated. Great service recovery and overall a really enjoyable brunch spot with a lively atmosphere.
