So I'm being generous here with three stars. Full disclosure I'll be back. The Brussels were amazing! The burger tasted amazing UNTIL not just one part but multiple parts were undercooked and pink. That's fine for a steak not for ground beef that's a health violation. I love the agua frescas! They're very tasty! Service was very lacking. They were extremely slow but the cashier was very disinterested and couldn't answer any of my questions and showed no initiative to find someone who could. Sever workers seen playing on their phones. My first taste of Smashburger was the Scorchen Hot Mac and Cheese, a black bean patty with fries. It was super tasty, super messy, and not at all scorchen. Was it memorable, veagly. Just like Josh M. experience , the 'help' at the counter /register I was ignored. While I tried to get a drink for at least 10 minutes other people were just walking out. Another just got an eye roll and the 'help' turned away. One person got some reply I didn't hear but that customer couldn't believe how rude the 'help' was and she left also. Convenient location in Durham. The food came out quickly, but it was basically packaged as to go and you could find a table if you wanted. I went with the bbq bacon smash burger. It was pretty good, just just missing a pop. I don't if it wasn't enough bbq or onions or the bacon lacked flavor, but it was missing something. Not grease, though, it had the greasiness! We weren't even sure if this place was open bc the outside was desolate and there was a lot of trash blowing around. But we saw lights on, so we ventured in. The inside was cold and dark and don't feel friendly at all. The menu looked great- several tasty-looking burgers and lots of sides. I opted for the double classic with a side of Brussels sprouts and my husband got a burger with bacon and the smash fries on the side. We both felt underwhelmed. Maybe the cooking oil was old, but everything was extremely greasy and not good. Even my soda was flat so I had to go back and dump it out and replace with water. Just a disappointing experience. The fries were McDonald's-like being thin and long. Overall, great food. The price was reasonable-ish at $12 and change for the two orders. My husband and I proceeded to eat at this location on a Sunday afternoon. We walked in and the vibes were just off. The menu consisted of 3 screens put together and one of them didn't work. We couldn't even see any of the burger options. I pointed it out to the cashier and she rudely passed me a menu. She never welcomed us into the restaurant and never said a word to us. She stood at the cash register with an AirPod in her ear and was on her phone the whole time. We put the menu down and walked out. He was done with his burger before I even got mine. Then my food was waiting in the window for another 7 min while the workers were helping other people. Came here during lunch break with a few coworkers from Hock. They make the burgers fresh and I really enjoyed mine. The cashier didn't get irritated with me when I changed my order three times while ordering because everything looked so yummy. I like that they offer the single patty or the double patty, if you're hungrier. Our burger and sides were brought to us fairly quickly, probably in about ten minutes. I got the mushroom swiss burger and it was so good. It was very filling, also. I stole some of my friend's tots and they were also good. Aggressively mediocre. I don't know if we've just been spoiled by Queen Burger here in Durham, but that place really puts Smashburger to shame in just about every way. My wife and I went Sunday for lunch and we were both really unimpressed with the quality of the food (which is pretty pricey) along with the overall taste of the food. The quality felt less than something like Five Guys but still on the same cost level. I ordered the BBQ Brisket bacon burger and it was dry and really unappealing. The fires were fine. When I got there, the workers said they had no idea about it. I ordered a regular double. I stood there and waited 30-minutes for my food. Was it worth it? I'm livid at how casually the employees take masks. There's no point stacking furniture, putting tape on the floors and adding a barrier in front of the register when masks are optional. I went there for the first time on April 16 with my husband. The woman who made my shake had her mask below her nose. I asked if she could pull it up please. She rolled her eyes at me, but did it. By the time she turned around with my husband's shake, the mask was down again. Being disgusted, I spoke to the manager, Ketan. I explained what she did with her mask (I left out the attitude). He made a weak excuse about how 'masks shift when working'. I then reiterated that she pulled it up, and 2 minutes later it was down again. He shrugged his shoulder, mumbled something and walked off. I will never eat here again. If you take safety seriously, you should avoid it too. If this is their standard in a pandemic, I can't imagine how nasty they are normally. Food is great. But this place won't last, sadly. It's so poorly managed and has been since it opened. I check in every few months to see if anything has changed. They're permanently understaffed and judging by the horrid service, they're underpaid as well. I can't blame the girl that won't take my order despite being first in line (never mind the couple in front of me who walked out after 5 minutes because she never acknowledged them) -- I can't blame her because she's undoubtedly being asked to do the work of two people for next to nothing, and likely at just under 40hrs/wk to avoid giving her benefits. "Excellent new fast-food burger place w/ lots of options" Heard of Smashburger before, but was delighted with my first visit there today (opening day). It's in the same shopping center as TGI Friday's, Noodles & Co, and Chipotle. The place was hopping even at 11:30am-- clearly there was anticipation for the opening, and there were LOTS of employees around helping everyone. Burgers come in 3 sizes, and the smallest is a third-pound. Sides are separate, but include their "smash fries" (w/ rosemary), sweet potato fries, or "veggie frites" (fried green beans & carrots served w/ ranch dressing). There were also some salad options, chicken burgers, and a black bean burger. Positives: + Taste. I got the spinach/ goat cheese/ cucumber hamburger. It was absolutely delicious-- the meat was great (tasted more like what you'd make on a grill than what you'd get from a fast food joint-- ground beef was loose rather than "packed"), they were generous with the spinach & goat cheese, and the vinaigrette was a nice addition. I also loved the veggie frites. My dining partner had the black bean burger (with fresh avocado slices), noting the burger itself was both large and flavorful. + Service. May be a function of opening day, but MANY staff checked on us regularly, and they took away our trash. Food came to our table pretty quickly, too... within 5 minutes despite the crowd. + Atmosphere. I appreciated that the seating wasn't overly cramped. There are many more seats than apparent from the doorway, as dining area extends in the back outside of view to the right. Appropriate: Price/ value. Not fast-food prices, but certainly fair for the high quality. Two of us had a filling lunch for $20. The sizes of everything were good-- not the "crazy-large" amounts of fries you get from places like Only Burger or Five Guys, but enough that you eat and feel full. Certainly a far better deal than going to TGI Friday's next door. Synopsis: I definitely plan to return. I also want to try their avocado burger. If they hold up the quality on all fronts, I'd go to 5 stars. Delightful, cheap, tasty, and right off Duke's campus. What more could one want? read more

My father owned a hamburger and milk shake restaurant and consequently I know much about this food and business. I ordered two cheeseburgers. A medium fry and two milkshakes today at the smash burger on Erwin road in Durham. There are no meals and each item is ordered separately. The order computer stations did not work. There were several major issues: 1. The person taking my order could not describe the menu, which was difficult to read on the wall behind her, 2. My cheeseburgers came with nothing on them-just meat, cheese and bread-could be my fault for not specifically stating what I wanted on it, but I wasn't asked and presumed it came as shown in the "classic", at least they cooked the meat, a specification that I also omitted when I ordered, 3. The place was dirty with peeling walls, and 4. the shakes came toward the middle of eating the burgers and 5. the cost was surprisingly expensive/$30. I will not return. There should be a zero star category. My dad would be appalled. It's difficult to make a profit selling hamburgers and I will be surprised if this joint survives. read more

Update: the Smashburger franchise is abysmal on all levels---called their headquarters about this and explained the issue- they said they would get back to me and never did. I called multiple times and left a voicemail and they screened my calls. Similar things have happened to other friends. Eventually had to file a report with the Better Business Bureau. ..... Ordered takeout here one night. The staff were so unprofessional and I vowed to never go again. Unfortunately I accidentally left my wallet behind right before leaving town for the weekend. I called to make sure they had it. They didn't answer the phone for two days. Finally got a hold of them and they said they found my wallet and put it in their safe until I could come pick it up. When I went to do so I quickly found out that one of their employees STOLE it from their safe. They were barely helpful in my attempts and I had to file a police report. We went back in forth for a week trying to rectify the situation and now they are ignoring me. It sucks. read more

UPDATE: After the negatives mentioned, actually got a *same-day* callback some hours after vmail, from a 10+ year staffer, kind and smart, who did much to make amends for the situ. Received refund for lost food and courtesy credit for another time - and a nice small chat about the behind scenes challenges facing the company for its high goals/standards in recent crazy times (post-pandemic changes in dining behavior & business model, the US labor shortage, cutbacks to survive the downturns...) some store localities are suffering more than others depending on local conditions and they're trying to evolve and mend difficulties. It was sincere and useful to know. I'd have said corporate does care and the store's the issue, but friend insisted on going back to shop to address the issues and the staff there at the time were also motivated to make things right and offered make-up food on the spot, which was rather tastier than the first order before this missed one. And were very gracious in the process to my friend. So in the end this place has some wounds, some challenges, some problems. The future isn't certain but they may overcome these things if the conditions and the people near and far keep caring to figure it out. Take all on board when considering supporting them with your food purchase needs. Local shop has never answered phone since day one and has no Vmail set up, even though the app asked for my phone number with the order and they could have called to say they were closing early even with orders being placed, paid cooked and with customers en route for pickup! No idea if I can even get a refund, no contact about the 'missed' order by app, phone, email, etc. Company knows nothing about building a following/loyal or just decently treated customers, at local or HQ level, and seems not to care. More extractive capitalism and profiteering and misery. Encourage anyone not to take the gamble - buy a burger or food anywhere else. read more

We got there about an hour before closing and it looked like they were short staff and kind of scrambling to the point the lady behind the counter was threatening no more shake orders since she has to make them by hand - which admittedly is hard to do when she's the only one taking order, too.
