Today, I visited a massage place in this plaza. Had read about Pollo Campero while researching places to eat a while back. It sounded good but had many negative reviews so I wasn't interested. But I couldn't pass up the opportunity to give it a try and I'm glad I did. I had no problem getting in the doors and the cute young man who was the cashier greeted me in Spanish with a smile. When I responded in English, he immediately switched to English. Placed my to-go order and within 10 mins I was out. Everything I ordered was there. Got home and dug into my roasted chicken. It was soooo delicious, rich with flavorful spices without the salt. I enjoyed every bite! I also had an empanada and found a bone in it. I'm from the Caribbean so the way I look at it, is that the chicken is real ;) and am not deducting a star for that. It's the same as finding a pit in "pitted prunes". I had bought a 2 pc fried chicken meal for my 17 year son. He devoured his and got into mine too, asking where this place was so he can take his friends. Have heard about this location for a while and finally had time to stop by. We decided to do a drive through order since we had other things to do - so my review will be on that. The ordering wasn't hard. We ordered a regular chicken sandwich and a spicy one. Each came with one side and NO drink. For the sides we got sweet plantains and fries. This came to $22 - yes. $22 dollars! The service overall was lackluster. No smiles. No warm greetings from the gentlemen. He was busy doing whatever it was he didn't pay attention to when our food was ready or that we sat there for a min waiting for him to come to the window to ask for napkins. No napkins, no silverware. So had to eat my plantains with my hands. The fries weren't good at all. The plantains were okay. The sandwiches were just okay. The spicy chicken just had a spicy sauce it seemed like - not in the batter. We looked and saw the sanitation score was a 93 - after we got our food. Best Fried Chicken I've had in a long while. Fried to perfection with lots of crunch on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside and the seasoning was amazing! I wish they would sell fried chicken skins as a side. Its that good. I ordered the 2 piece with 1 side that comes with a roll and my side choice was the Mac n Cheese. It was delicious too. Lots of cheesy goodness and seasoned perfectly. My only complaint is that I think the noodles were a little over cooked but I really didn't care that much about it because it tasted so good. This is the first time I have stopped by, though I have passed it often. Very clean inside and easy to make selections. Lots of sides to choose from. I bought the two piece chicken plate with French fries. The chicken has a nice light seasoning and the skin is crisp. It tasted like it was first roasted, then fried as it was so moist! If you eat in, your food comes out on a real plate. They had people constantly cleaning the seating area, and they checked with me a couple of times to see if I was okay. The family meals seem to be very popular as I think every table except mine had platters of food brought out to them. Everything looked great and all seemed to really enjoy the food. I noticed when Pollo Campero opened but it wasn't on a must try list. Often I miss my El Pollo Loco from back in San Diego and thought, maybe it would be like my beloved grilled, crispy, citrus chicken - it wasn't. However, the chicken was quite good. I got a two piece meal, grilled leg and thigh. The chicken had a nice homemade taste to it. Yummy spices (not heat, but spice), moist, a little crispy but it could've used a bit more grill time for my liking. It was comforting and still perhaps could get away with being a better choice health wise than say going to Bojangles. That said, they do serve fried chicken as well, of which I didn't try this time. I got the campero rice as my side which I liked a lot. Good flavor, not plain. You get a choice of roll or Tortilla but they were out of tortillas (on a Saturday at 11:45am). I would like to try the tortilla as the roll was, just a roll. My husband got beans as his side and those were good - kinda creamy, tiny tiny spice. We split an empanada and that was the showstopper. Good chicken filling! It was very busy but we got our food pretty quick. Bummed about lack of tortillas and there also was no ice, which I would've really like to have had because the delicious horchata and the mango beverage would have tasted even better. I've driven by this place a dozen times and I always notice how full the parking lot is. I decided today was the day and went through the drive-thru and I wasn't disappointed. The menu was straight forward and so I ordered the 4pc fried chicken meal. It came with two sides and rolls. The ordering process was easy enough and the food took a few minutes to come out. It was hot, fresh and crispy and I didn't have to ask for hot sauce because they already included it. I did wish the wing and thigh were a little bigger, but what they lacked in size they made up for in flavor. The sweet plantains and Mac and cheese sides could also be a little bigger in serving, but they were very tasty, as well. The rice was okay. I've had better. The roll wasn't good. Very dry! I'm not sure what all the hype is here besides the price point, which is extremely low priced, and for what I got, I see why. Perhaps I should retry something else on the menu. The staff here are nice and keep a smile on their face. Not much of a welcome. Pollo Campero is an absolute gem in Raleighwood. It slightly reminds me of Pollo Tropical in FL because it's the only place I've ever known to be able to get maduros (sweet plantains) in the drive thru. Both the fried chicken and grilled chicken are juicy and cooked to perfection, but the grilled is my favorite because it has a limey taste. Their empanadas are also great because they aren't too heavy. They remind me of a light version of a cream cheese wonton, but with chicken, corn, and cheese and a lighter shell. I also love the campero rice and beans. The 20 piece value meal is also something you can't beat. After tax it comes to $50ish bucks but you get 20 pieces of chicken (I would recommend asking for half fried and half grilled), 4 sides, and bread. My one star dock is for service because I used the drive thru and although they were fast, they forgot to include the bread rolls im my family value meal. read more

I was also excited because everyone was walking out with large bags of food. It was my first time here around the beginning of lunch hour and I ordered the 8 piece pack that comes with 2 side choices (mashed potatoes & sweet plantains) and 4 dinner rolls. It doesn't say on the menu, but I asked to get half & half of the fried & grilled chicken. I was given only 1 chicken breast instead of 2 out of the whole chicken. I peeled a bit of each chicken to try as soon as I got the food to make sure I can give an honest review instead of waiting til my food has cooled down from the 20 minute drive home. The fried chicken wasn't as crispy as I'd hope but the seasoning was a little salty for me. The grilled chicken was ok and had a bit of a strong rosemary taste. The sweet plantains were probably the most decent of the entire meal, but the mashed potatoes I had gotten had been sitting in the warmer too long so it was quite dry and had a weird texture to it. We love the fried chicken at pollo campero! When they first opened the lines were so long and we finally checked them out while in N Raleigh. We have only done the drive thru and the staff is always kind and our chicken is always piping hot. You can get chicken with sides or just chicken. We ordered a few: spicy chicken sandwiches, a salad, and rice, beans, and plantains as sides. We were missing two of our french fries, a sides, so I went in and they were able to fix that pretty quickly. As far as the food goes, it's fine. The chicken is not very crispy, the french fries are not very salty, but the plantains are delicious. The chicken is good quality, and very meaty, but again, if you're looking for fried chicken, this is not it. This is not terribly expensive, so if you're looking for a quick meal, and you're in the area. Have low expectations and you'll be pleasantly surprised. It's hard to describe this chicken except it's fricken delicious! Crispy skin, but not overly breaded. The seasoning is savory, but not salty. The wait is a little long, but well worth the wait! They don't have the chicken just pre-cooked under a warmer and pick from there when you order. It's cooked when you order! The rice has corn in it with the perfect chewy texture. The plantains were nice and sweet. The cole slaw is a little too creamy for my taste, but I added a little red wine vinegar and it was perfect! We went last night after dinner just to try the chicken. Had couple wings. Then we were back this morning at 11:00 because we wanted the full meal!! Didn't wait as long this time!!
