12-piece family meal and spicy chicken sandwich combo. $44.72 total. Uber Eats total.
    Daniel B.

Our first Popeyes experience in the Triangle was a good one. Where we're from, Atlanta, Popeyes is popular and almost has a cult status among several of my friends. There are three Popeyes locations in Durham: (1) This one on Guess Road, just off I-85 exit 175; (2) South Square, just off 15-501; and (3) The Streets at Southpoint shopping mall. The drive-thru at this Popeyes is almost always busy when we drive past it after a Costco run. People love Popeyes fried chicken. Can't blame them. It's delicious. We did Uber Eats for this Popeyes and had them deliver to our Chapel Hill home. This Guess Road location isn't as close to Chapel Hill as the other Durham locations, but this is what pulled up on the Uber Eats app at the time. Surprisingly, even after the food had been sitting in a takeout bag for, I estimate, 30-60 minutes (our driver had one stop before us), everything tasted good. The chicken obviously wasn't as hot and crispy as if we'd eaten at the restaurant, but it was still quite tasty, so were the sides and the spicy chicken sandwich we got. The only thing that was bad was the Coke that came with our sandwich combo. The drink got watered down from the melted ice, so I poured it out. We got a 12-piece family meal, spicy, with mixed dark and white meat chicken. The meal came with two sides - we chose mashed potatoes and gravy and coleslaw - and six biscuits for $32.39. The spicy chicken sandwich cost $4.79 plus regular fries at $2.27 and the small fountain drink at $2.15. After taxes, the total cost for the meal was $44.72, ordered using the Uber app. I like Kentucky Fried Chicken, but I think Popeyes' chicken is crispier and tastier than KFC's Original Recipe fried chicken, in general. This chicken was yummy and hit the spot. Popeyes' sides are satisfying too and I appreciated the large sizes that came with the 12-piece family meal. The biscuits were both a tad too dry and salty, but still, I had no problem downing them. As for the sandwich - which was very popular and made headlines when it debuted in August 2019 - I enjoyed it as well. The sandwich wasn't as big as I remembered, but I wasn't complaining. I'd order it again. It was very comparable to the Chick-fil-A spicy chicken sandwich. I continue to give the edge to CFA in the Chicken Sandwich Wars. The fries got a little soft from sitting, but we still demolished them. No flavor lost from the food delivery, just texture. Our driver, Wendy, got us our meal on time and she was nice. So, if you've never had Popeyes delivered via Uber Eats before, chalk this up as one good experience. Recommended.

I've seen the hubub about the chicken sandwich for years and thought, well maybe. Finally tried it today -- wow it is really really good! I'm sure everyone's read about it or tried it already. I was surprised how excellent it seemed compared to anything I've had before, and especially other fast-food joints along I-85. The restaurant was very busy (esp drive-thru) but the place was clean and they operated efficiently and politely. I was very impressed!

The Chicken is only good when they first open at 10. The reason they get a 3 is because they always forget something. Hope this tip helps!

Even at 1:30 am, they're friendly, quick and the food delicious! This place sets the mood in the same way Waffle House or any gas station bathroom does - classically janky....though I'll say it has had a facelift since we were last here. We went to another cookout when we touched down and left because it looked too nice and didn't have a wrong sided drive thru! As such, we came back down Nostalgias highway to our OG cookout on Hillsbrough! It was exactly what we wanted! The stand alone, dual drive thru (with walk up) set up of this place is nothing short of amazing. If you had to design a place, it might accidentally turn out like this and you'd just accept it, not realizing the brilliance that is passing food through a passenger window! Seriously, of through the drive thru on the left. The food is such a perfect example of southern burgers - it's like in-n-out that you want to come back to! Cheddar style, steak style, west style - don't matter, it's all boss level! You'd like a burger with sides of corn dog and walking taco? Got it - one of 55 shake options? Done - more hush puppies? On it! The loudspeakers have been improved upon - you used to just pretend you understood what was being said and accept what you received. Now, they repeat it back at least. Our kids scarfed it down so fast we literally went through and ordered a second time, 6 minutes later. Three burgers, nuggets, rings and the equivalent of three pints of ice cream can't be wrong! Aside from my children, I may not love a human child more than this burger joint. It's so good, any time, any days, double stamp it, touch blue make it true, no eraseys! Thanks for living up to the hype 15 years later!

Thank God I asked for mayo so I could put it on the dry chicken. The fries were fresh and hot. They were delicious but the rest of the meal was trash. Why would you give one item fresh and the rest a disaster? Quesadilla burned up and the cheesecake was frozen solid in the center. Overall, a disappointment.

I ordered the SHREDDED BEEF AREPA which also comes with plantains, cheese and beans inside. I chose garlic sauce and it was superb on the arepa! Very delicious and I suspect the arepa samdwiches are gluten free for those intolerant, but I didn't ask. The TORTILLA CHIPS that come with the meal are good, and suspect they make them in-house. The SERVICE was horrible. Guy behind counter told me the soda machine only had diet soda, which was what I wanted anyway. Out of curiosity I asked if it was hospital policy to exclude sugar soda or if the machine was just out of sugar syrups. He responded "don't know" in a "don't care" attitude. I went to fill my cup and the machine didn't serve ice either! This place could really help people in the hospital by smiling and showing they care about the customer. Most eating here in the hospital cafeteria are carrying the weight of poor health on their shoulders, whether their own or a loved one. It's a hospital cafeteria so its a place to sit down, and could be a good break from sitting in a loved ones patient room. It's not a restaurant that one would come to if not in the hospital.

What's notable about this local chain is its extensive options for vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diners. The default arepa apparently has some dairy and gluten in it, but options for getting one to suit a vegan or gluten-free diet are there. The filling options for an arepa are customizable and numerous, with a range of flavors and nutritional profiles. My takeout order was ready speedily. Oddly, they gave me an extra arepa, which was unlabeled except for saying that it was a gift. It didn't seem to be vegetarian, so I didn't eat it. I appreciate the sentiment, but they might want to think about at least making it clearer what's going on.
