Smashburger is one of the places I go to for my weekly splurge, and I was happy to find a location so close to Montclair. I wasn't wild about the parking situation (kinda cramped and difficult to turn into the lot), but I got in, found a spot, and got in line. Once I was inside, I was surprised to see that it seemed more like a takeout place than a sit-down place. Maybe there weren't as many seats as usual? I'm not sure. But there was a group of people waiting for takeout, and only about 2 groups in the booths. (It was a chilly day, and there was a draft coming in through the two sets of doors, so maybe that had something to do with it?) But the important thing about Smashburger is that my food was good (exactly what I ordered), service was very friendly, and the wait wasn't long at all, considering how busy they were. My Classic Smash & Veggie Frites came out perfectly! And for some reason, they were giving out coupons to all the customers for a return visit -- which I'm never going to complain about! read more

I recently went to your location in Montclair, NJ on Thursday, October 23, 2014. I placed an order for a New Jersey burger, fries, fried pickles and a small drink. While I was eating a burger at approximately 6:00 pm eastern time, I bit into a machine screw that was inside of my burger. I couldn't believe that this could get inside of my burger. If something like a screw was in my burger it makes me wonder if that was the only thing wrong with my food. I was outraged to bite into a steel screw almost breaking my rear left teeth. I would hope that such a large company like your selves would be responsible enough to keep on top of there locations in regards to sanitary conditions. read more

My first impression of SmashBurger was "Whoa! Smells like Wendy's!" It picked up after that. You can't help but compare Smash to all the other burger chains around. It's somewhere between Five Guys and Elevation Burger and Shake Shack. It does some things right and gets a few wrong. The space is pretty nice... mostly clean and well-designed. One of the snaking track lights on the ceiling was flickering with some kind of power drain, making us feel a little like we were in an Eli Roth film. The tables are bussed often enough to remove the food and garbage, but there were enough greasy smudges on our booth to make me reach for the napkins as soon as I sat down. The ordering process was simple enough. They have a number of menus around the restaurant, and they're laid out reasonably clearly. You have choices between a few house selections and a "build your own" burger. There are also chicken sandwiches and a number of sides. The highlight of the menu, though, is the Haagen Dasz milkshakes. You place your order, you sit down, they bring your grub to your table. The burgers are pretty good, but slightly overpriced. Most selections are going to run you $6 at least. Fries are $2, and they are terrible. Frozen McDonalds wannabe fries... *shudder* The milkshake was excellent. The best feature, the most redeeming thing in the whole restaurant was the staff. Every employee we passed was incredibly friendly and helpful and that part made up for a lot of the frayed edges. So, in wrap up, I'd say 2.5 stars... this is not a great place to bring a big group for a fun dinner experience, but is certainly good enough to grab a bite before a movie or show in downtown Montclair. Man what happened to this place. I went here last week and my experience wasn't so good this time. The girl who took my order appeared as if she was having a bad day. She wasn't pleasant at all. I got my food in a timely manner as usual but the quality of the food went down since the last time I visited this particular Smash Burger. Food didn't taste as good this time around and it was wayyyy more greasy than usual. I got a lil nauseated after eating my black bean burger and fries. The most impressive part of my dining experience at Smashburger in Montclair was the quality hand soap. It managed to remove most of the grease, if not the odor of the burger. We were intrigued at the difference between Smash fries and regular fries. It was explained to us that the Smash fries were cooked in "herbal" oil, meaning, I guess, that the regular fries were cooked in generic motor oil. Everyone was very nice and polite, which made sense as it is hard to serve miserable cuisine AND have an attitude. You need good stuff to have attitude, like the Soup Nazi. Smashburger was very close to 5 stars for me. The burger was outstanding, really one of the best I have had in a long time. It was perfectly cooked, oversized and seasoned well. It absolutely embarrasses a place like Five Guys - the burger was twice the size, twice as tender and more than twice as good, comparatively. Smashburger the restaurant is a bit sterile - a kind of fast-food, burger diner combination without a lot of ambience. The service was friendly and the burger delivery was fast. The interior of the Smash was clean and there were a fair amount of nice sized booths which I liked a lot. The menu at Smashburger is another good thing. There are ample options - burgers, chicken and salads - and they are organized well into a compact menu with a bevy of options. There is no guessing involved, Smashburger is in the rotation and I fully expect to be adding that fifth star after the next trip. read more

My burger-loving boyfriend and I went almost as soon as this place opened and we have both been back multiple times in the past few weeks. The burgers are fantastic! They season the outside heavily and then smash them down on the grill (hence the name) giving the burger a fabulous, seasoned crust on the outside. The smashing also makes the bun to burger ratio perfect. Other great things are the chicken sandwich--the chicken is smashed as well for a great chicken to bun ratio. You can get the fries seasoned as usual or Smashfries, seasoned with rosemary and olive oil. The regular fries seasoned this way are great, while the sweet potato fries taste a bit odd with rosemary. Smashburger does serve hot dogs but they aren't all that exciting. Haagen Daz shakes and malts, however, were extremely exciting and also quite tasty. The oddest thing about Smashburger is their hybrid service. You order at the counter, get a number and your food is brought out to you. After that, there are servers wandering around who will clear your trays. Our problem was that they were too attentive, nearly taking our food before we were finished. This might have been because the restaurant is so new. But honestly, with a burger that good, I can fend off the servers! read more

Just Did a pepsi challenge of Elevation burger and Smashburger. Smashburger was way too salty! I took three bites and put my burger down. I ordered the Mushroom Swiss and my friend ordered the New Jersey and we both didn't like or finish our burgers. The patties were dry and so salty and you couldn't taste underneath all the toppings. We ordered the smashfries which were pretty good but not great. There was too much going on and the taste was subpar. Go down the road to Elevation instead, where the burger is better. read more

Second time ordering from this location and was no different from the first time. The first time I had ordered a create your own burger with jalepenos and added bacon and the the other burger was a black bean burger. Well, my beef burger didn't have the jalapenos or bacon on it, instead, it was on the black bean burger. The person couldn't eat the black bean burger since it had bacon on it. I had taken pics and sent it in to corporate. The manager of the location called me back, was apologetic, and invited me to return to make my order right at anytime at no charge. That was nice of him. So yesterday, I ordered again, paying for it, as I didn't want to drive to the location for a free burger so I ordered through Doordash, and again my order was messed up. I again ordered a beef burger and a black bean burger. I received two black bean burgers, and no beef burger. I called the location, spoke to manager, who was again, apologetic and wanted to make it right, but since it was ordered through Doordash, I had to go through them. I called Doordash and they refunded me the amount for the burger. Twice I had to deal with the wrong order. The folks preparing the food are not properly reading the order when making it and no one is verifying before the food goes out. Atleast, this is what it seems like. With all the other burger places out there, I can't give this location another chance. Also, the presentation was very sloppy. The only reason I gave 2 starts, and not 1, is because the manager handled the situation in an appropriate manner both times. read more

I'm usually a fan of Smashburger. For those who don't know, Smashburger is a hybrid between fast food (you order your food at a counter) and casual dining (after ordering, you find a free seat and they deliver the food to you). The burger quality is usually decent and this was consistent at this location. But this location is smaller than some of the others I've been to. And while that isn't a deal breaker, this place was pretty run down, and cleanup service was slow. Many of the seat cushions were torn and patched with duct tape. Since most people don't sit for more than 15-20 minutes, the turnover is pretty fast. But there isn't a place for you customers to bring their garbage. At Smashburger they clean up after you. Yet here, there were constantly tables with leftover food and garbage on the tables. At one point, I counted five tables all with dirty dishes on them for over 10 minutes. But the service here was very friendly and nice. If they can cleanup their cleanup service and brighten up the place, I'd raise their rating. But it all felt run down and neglected. read more

I was planning to go to panera to get a sammy but saw that this place was new and decided to try it. I took a quick look at the menu and ordered the classic smash burger (1/3 lb.) and smash burger fries (rosemary, olive oil, garlic). The smash burger was bigger than I expected which is usually a good thing. Boy was I wrong...the burger was very heavy/sloppy. The taste of it was fine...nothing out of the ordinary from a normal burger. I got through half of it and threw the rest away (I know bad habit). The fries on the other hand were good hence the 2 stars. Anywho, I won't be back here. There are too many other places to discover. read more

Smashburger is overpriced and underwhelming. It is a fall-back when I need a chain food burger and getting to Elevation Burger is impossible due to a Wellmont Theater show. The burgers aren't tasty, the fries aren't greasy -- they're OILY (disgusting) and it's always crowded and it takes too long to get your food (they deliver it to you, here). Sadly, the only thing I can say that's appealing at Smashburger is this: they bus your dirties at the end. It's a sad statement to say that, as far as chain burger joints go, "the best table-busing is at Smashburger"... but that's the long- and the short- of it. read more

The good: The fries were not salty (good for me). Wished they were not too skinny but overall, they were good. The bad: Veggie burger was VERY SMUSHY. I ordered veggie burgers from other places but this was the first time I experienced a nasty veggie burger. Could not even finish it. Next time, I will stick with a regular burger and see how it is. Had lunch here while up in the old neighborhood(s) last weekend. Have heard many people rave about this burger place (among others- Vin Burger and Elevation Burger), so we decided to try it out before hitting the road to our next destination. I got the regular smash burger, build your own style- multi grain roll, tomatoes, pickles, onions, mayo, ketchup, and blue cheese. They forgot my pickles, so I had to go get some on the side (and they gave me like 2, hmpf). My cousin got the larger Smash burger with cheddar and lettuce and tomatoes.We both enjoyed our burgers very much, though I couldn't tell from just looking at the burgers that his was bigger. My burger was pretty good, I liked the char on the burger from I guess when they smash it or whatever. We skipped on the fries since we were trying to be healthy (LOL) and shared a soda from the fountain. They bring your food out to you and it came out very quickly. There wasn't much of a wait either when we went, 2pm on a Saturday afternoon. The one big thing I didn't like was how they served the burgers on these wire baskets, since I am a messy eater and I just made more work for the crew there! whoops. I have been to several of this restaurants and I was surprised to see how filthy this one was. As you go in the windows are not clean... The table tops are disgusting , the seats are broken and inside the booth walls were writings...... I also encounter a fly by the soda fountain sitting there. We were the first ones here for lunch on Friday, which might explain the incredibly quick service. The two ladies working the counter were very nice, asked us if we wanted our burgers cut in half. They took our order, and gave us a number. Within a few minutes, our burgers were delivered, freshly smashed, to our table. They smelled amazing; we couldn't wait to dig our grubby little paws into them. We got the New Jersey burger (distinctly "American" tasting) and the Spicy Baja burger (a nice bit of kick). Seems like the accompanying ingredients for each burger were specially chosen with some TLC, down to the chipotle bun for the Spicy Baja and the blue cheese crumbles that melt from the heat of the patty of the New Jersey. For "better burgers," I feel like the price tags are justified. The "smashburger" technique has been perfected here; crispy-crusty outer edges with still-juicy, tender centers. Yeah, it's gonna get messy, but it's SO worth it. They really get you on the prices of the sides, though. $2 for french fries? They DO have rosemary, but the flavors of the herbs were a bit drowned out by the oil. Ditto on the veggie frites, which had the potential to be really good had they not been drowning in oil. They were even more oily than the fries. I'd like to eventually try something from every category of the menu; it all sounds so enticing! Came on a Sunday, like other yelpers, we wanted to eat Panera but instead wanted to try out smashburger. It has a fast food feel to it, the cashiers seem to be too removed from the food, our cashier didn't know the difference in size between the double smash and double big smash burger, not too important. The food runners seem to have a better grip on what's what. The decor is comfortable, the booths are pretty big, you could easily fit 8 people in one of the larger booths. The lady ordered the "New Jersey" burger, sharp blue cheese and extremely crispy and smoky bacon. The buns are really great here. I think the quality is better than all 'fast food' places and slightly better than Fuddruckers or more sit down places like Friendly's. Very pretty burgers, not as greasy and smashed as Five Guys. I would totally come back to try more of the pre-designed burgers, I think the price is decent, and the quality is great. read more

I don't know whether to consider this place a fast food-type restaurant (McDonald's, etc) because they cook all their burgers to the same temperature OR a serious burger joint (Shake Shack wannabe style) because they offer a different 'exotic' ingredients/selections and costs substantially more than a Quarter Pounder with Cheese (not to mention the wait...). I ordered the BBQ burger asking for the sauce on the side since I only wanted a hint of BBQ sauce so I could assess the taste of the meat. I was assured by two different people (the order taker and the order filler) that the sauce would be on the side. I wasn't all that surprised when I received a half pound burger with a TON of BBQ sauce. To be quite honest, I couldn't really taste the burger. In addition to the sauce, there were some fried onion strings that were so over salted that saltiness was all I could taste. I made the mistake of ordering an onion 'nest' which was basically a greasy mess of the same onion strings. These just don't work because they are salty and so soggy. If they were better seasoned and crispy it may work. I can feel the sear to the burger patty which was nice. The price and the wait for this burger is simply not worth it. I'll have to wait to try Five Guys or just wait in line at Shack Shake in NYC Madison Square Park. read more

Was craving a burger last night and decided to give this place a try. This was my first time trying any smashburger. I ask the register girl what should I get since I never been here and she suggested the sin city burger. So I order it and got a side of fries. I took it home and ate it 7 minutes later. The fries were cold since I got them. I don't know if it's just me, but I always reach for fries the minute I get my bag of food. I wasn't thrilled about this but it's late around 10pm, so I didn't complained. Once I took my first bite of my burger, I was kicking myself for not ordering a plain and simple burger. I was hungry so I ate it. A few hours later my stomach was letting me know something wasn't fresh in my burger. So it was a long night. I won't be going back. Good solid meal. I had a 1/2 pound classic Smashburger and the haystack onions, both of which were hot and fresh. Service was quick and efficient, without trouble, and the place was about half full on a Friday at 3 pm - a good sign. This falls in that odd spot between fast food and sit-down, but deals with it well. The burgers are very good - a lot of stuff (lettuce, tomato, pickles, catchup, and more) but holds up well. Unfortunately, the last time I came here, I was harassed by the boys who worked here. A lot of them were coming up to me trying to obnoxiously compliment me. I did not come to smashburger for young teenage boys to hit on me. I am now going to a different one, much farther from my house because of this experience. I've been wanting to try this place since I always pass it on Bloomfield Ave going towards my Montclair residence. So finally, after me and my daughter had a nice swim in Mountainside pool of Upper Montclair...boy we worked up an appetite. We were actually in our way to State Street diner, but decided to try this Burger joint "Smash Burger". I ordered for myself the Double classic burger with Mayo, Katchup, Tomato and pickles as a meal with what I thought would add fries and a drink-yes and I asked for it to be large size(for myself). Then for my daughter I order the same but as a single burger meal Total came to $19.80 No biggie. So the cashier handed me 1 medium sized cup and I asked for my large cup she said...Oh I only charged you for 1. So she started ringing me up for a fry and drink for the 2nd meal which came to $7+ At this point i'm confused because I specifically asked for 2 combo meals with 1 being upsized, and there was no way I'd be paying for a fry and regular sized drink and I already was paying $19.80. She gave me a big attitude and huffed and puffed, turned around to her co-worker and they both rolled their eyes when I said I need both cups. Because of the unprofessionalism of someone who appeared to be a supervisor of Manager and the cashier, I asked for my money back. I guess it was the supervisor and she gave me a very hard time giving me my money back...which I paid with my credit card. All I can think of now. We find Smashburger to be the best... Counter Burger and Bobbies Burger Palace.. Toss up... But on value and food quality/taste.... Smashburger wins. I recommend you try the three places I mentioned... or all of them... Zinburger and then 25 Burgers are my least favorites. Give them a try... decide for yourself. read more

OMG!!!! My fiance stumpled upon this place last night. It was a short wait for our order and the staff was incredibly sweet. Ok as a the eats-we are ordered the 1/2 lb smash jersey burger and the sweet potatoe fries with a diet coke. The taste was so good I thought that my fiance was behind the counter cooking. It tasted homemade seasoned to perfection. They already have a cult following from the looks of the restaurant. I've had the chicken burger but usually get the make your own hamburger. The chicken burger is a bit too healthy tasting. I think this is better than Five Guys and my favorite for NJ fast food when it comes to burgers. When you fill out the survey and bring it back for your next order you can order any side for free. There is nothing that anyone can do to convince me that there is a burger chain better than In-N-Out, nothing. Hell, I flew into EWR with six animal style double doubles as part of my carry on a week ago. However, let's get this straight. Taking a bite out of a Classic Smashburger with Smash Sauce and a side of Smash Fries is pretty smasheriffic in its own right. There are a few things that really stick out to me. 1. Classic Smashburger [A]: The Angus burger patty that the Smashburger chain uses crumbles and just melts in your mouth; "it's like buttah." Considering how busy it was when I stopped by for lunch, my burger was hot and well made. The vegetables were fresh and crisp, which is an eye opener for a fast food chain. The Smash Sauce matched well with the burger patty, but it's nothing too special. I do recognize that it's Smashburger's way of being different. Before I forget, the potato bun that is used is really soft. Me likey. 2. Smash Fries [B+]: Straight up greasy, yo. I'm annoyed by the fact that fries are separate from the burger, but the amount of fries you get is alright. Then again, the Smash Fries remind me of those thin potato stick chip snacks that come in the plastic jars. I love how crispy the fries were, but they were too salty! 3. Glen Ridge branch [B]: It was really busy today, but I do not remember anyone coming back to complain about their order being wrong. The booth seats near the entrance are huge! You could fit three to four people per side or six to ten people per table. While the girl who took my order was nice enough to guide me through the menu, my main complaint about the place is the cleanliness. The huge line I was in was 98% take out, so there were plenty of seats available. However, the problem is that since the employees are the ones who clean up after you, there are metal wire trays waiting to be picked up and tables to be cleaned. I wouldn't have been able to sit down and eat if I didn't ask twice for someone to clean a table up for me. Do I like Smashburger? Yes. Am I fan? Maybe a few more visits, then I might say I am a fan. There are three other chains that I need to try here in NJ before I update my ranking: Shake Shack, Steak & Shake, and Johnny Rocket's. For now, I don't mind coming back here for lunch. read more

Very impressed with SB. Quick service and reasonable prices, and equally important, when ordering the server verifies your order. I got my classic-1/2 pound, American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and extra extra pickles. Burger very tasty, although slightly greasy, and cooked medium-well; the bun stands up well to a 10-minute walk home without becoming soggy, although the burger itself started to crumble under its own weight. Regular fries pretty tasteless-thin cut, nothing special, would probably pass on them next time. If SB's goal is to replicate Shake Shack's burger they are doing a mighty fine job.
