Wow what happened to Cars! The food quality here has reduced significantly. The staff at the time of my visit was attentive and friendly but they have to be misguided by poor management who is looking to cut corners to present such an awful product in a prime real estate location (walking distance of the high school). The establishment smells of an old mop and not like they are producing flavorful and delicious food items. I've been ordering Mac and cheese bites from CARS weekly for a few years now and they recently changed the recipe. They are now too spicy, not as crunchy, and somehow less flavorful. It's as if the flavor was replaced by pure heat. I had to throw them out for the second time last night. What a shame having to eliminate one of my staple dinners. Cars used to be my go-to, but lately it's been a huge disappointment. I keep giving them "one more chance" because the food is so disgusting (in the best possible way) when it's right, but there seems to be something wrong every time. Most of the time it hasn't been anything huge, like requesting sauce on the side and them either putting the sauce on the sandwich, or just not giving any sauce, but when I ordered the Fat Tesla (a vegetarian sandwich) and they put chicken fingers in it (we did not add them), it was a big problem for my "only eats kosher meat" wife. To their credit, they did re-make it, but of course I had to go pick it up so mine ended up getting cold. Today was, perhaps, the final "one more chance," though. We ordered through their website, figuring it's more profitable for them than if we had ordered through GrubHub or Uber Eats. The delivery estimate was 45 minutes, which was totally fine, but after 46 minutes I got an email that the order had been cancelled. No explanation or anything, just a note to call the restaurant for more information. I called, twice, and there was no answer. So now I have no food AND a $75 hold on my card. Knowing myself, I'll probably give them just one more chance, and if that one goes okay, they'll be back in the rotation until they betray my trust again... read more

There aren't many fat sandwich places in the area so I decided to give CARS a visit and get a sandwich. It's located in a little strip mall Soñita easy to pass up if your not paying attention. The service was pretty quick and I ordered the Fat Mo, but in place of the Sriracha Mayo I got ranch dressing with an extra order on the side. They have kiosks to order by computer inside which is pretty good when it gets busy. The order took about 15 minutes which isn't too bad. The sandwich itself was solid, good amount of everything on it. My personal favorite was the Mac and cheese bites which were better than expected. The only problem was that I ordered ranch on the sandwich and on the side. I ended up with none. Luckily I took this home and I had ranch dressing or else it woulda been pretty dry. Check your bag before you leave to make sure everything is in there. It was on the order, and I was charged for the extra ranch (29 cents no big deal) , so it wasn't the guy at the registers fault. I am from Philadelphia suburbs and grew up eating excellent cheesesteaks and hoagies. I've been on a mission to try cheesesteaks claiming to be Philly cheesesteaks in north NJ. Cars' call in, get a text, pick up system works well. Their cheesesteak was okay, but I will not get it again. Roll was a bit too bulky and not enough Italian roll flavor. Not enough steak or onions for me. Their menu seems to feature crazy fat sandwiches with too many ingredients for me. Perhaps that is their specialty. BUT....did it taste pretty good. Yes. Ordered online and when I got to the store they gave my order to someone else then made me wait 20 minutes in the restaurant. Messed up my plan for the whole night. Whoever the girl was at the register was a real jerk to not only me but the staff in the kitchen as well and reeked of weed. I walked in the store and she was yelling at the staff. Guy came back with my order and she let him keep it, I told her I don't mind taking it since he didn't open the bag and she told me it was "against store policy" so they had to make more food. Decided to try this spot for lunch. The burger and waffle fries were decent. The burger could use a little more seasoning in my opinion. The raw onions and fresh pickles hit the spot!! I had been wanting to try Cars for years. Unfortunately, the sandwich was not anything to write home about. It seems that the parts of the sandwich were greater than the whole. The individual parts were decent but somehow didn't seem to work together. It's as if everything blended together and tasted like one fried unit. The sauce I ordered was left out of the order. The sandwich was dry and needed sauce to lift it up. The best part was the peach iced tea. Sometimes you just want that fat sandwich. Although you will need to work out because of this, don't do it right after because it is some heavy food. But for a rare craving, this hit the spot. Don't come here weekly. I came a few times when I was in college, and it definitely has a youngish appeal. You have the munchies, you're up late, you can handle much more greasy foods, etc. I actually used to get their "skinny sandwich" (vs their fat sandwiches) because I prefer grilled chicken vs. fried. They don't have those anymore. I guess if you're going to do something like cheat on your diet, you might as well go all the way. No half measures. The sandwiches have crazy ingredients like french fries and mozzarella sticks inside. The smaller sandwich is more than enough to be filling. I went with the Fat Pete, which was chicken, bacon, mozzarella sticks, cheese steak, and ranch. The ingredients mush together so you just get the sense of over the top indulgence. You can customize the orders online. I ordered for pickup and it was ready when I requested. Maybe the main issue with low ratings is their delivery? Their food is as advertised. I just had to go for the brownie roll as well, which is a dense brownie in a spring roll. Very sweet and rich. It was great hot, but it was 4 pieces, so I put the rest in fridge and it was great chilled too. More of a sharing food or over a couple of days. First time at CARS Sandwiched & Shakes. Truthfully it was because the Pizza place was closed. I'm not much of a bread or sandwich eater, so my options were limited besides I also can't fathom putting things like, Mac & cheese bites, chicken fingers or mozzarella sticks on a sandwich. For me, this a places I would go when it's late and nothing else is available, which was the case here. I ordered the Mac & Cheese bites & an order of chicken fingers (simple). My friend ordered the Big Fat Reptar, it had cheesesteak, Mac & cheese bites, jalapeño, chicken fingers & buffalo ranch sauce; I just can't eat like that, it's funny what you can eat when you are in your 20's, but at this point in my life any sandwich that has the words "big fat" in it is a step away from a heart attack or stroke; so I had to pass on that. The restaurant was small, it's not a sit down spot, you basically order your food & keep it moving. Honestly for process food it was okay, the Mac & cheese bites were good, but after 1, it was too much for me, however I would order it again. African American lady who worked there was very disrespectful. She said something over the phone and I couldn't hear her. I heard laughing in the background and harsh wind over the phone. I walked in here a couple of weeks ago after I left Montclair Brewery and picked up The "Fat Skeeter". It comes with Cheesesteak meat, chicken tenders, mozzarella sticks, marinara sauce, cheese. R.I.P. to that sandwich. The bread was incredibly soft, and the fixings on the inside were fresh and absolutely delicious. I couldn't believe that I finished the whole sandwich in one sitting. I wish I took pictures but I was so hungry and forgot. I got a fat hawk and the funnel cake balls. The balls were absolutely amazing, definitely recommend if you want something sweet. I was able to split the fat hawk into two meals, so it's a very filling sandwich. The fat hawk you HAVE TO TRY. I love the spicy mayo combo. When placing my catering order, the manager was very polite and made ordering very easy. I ordered a box of 10 sandwiches & some fries and boneless wings. The order was correct & delicious and they packed plenty of sauce and napkins. My personal favorite of the fat sandwiches here is the fat Gerald. As a college student who goes to school in town, this spot is great when you're looking for some late night comfort food. What better than a fat sandwich? My only complaint is I have had my food take almost 2 hrs for delivery before on busier nights. Pricing is decent, but no good fat sandwich is going to be cheap. I've had everything on the menu from here at one point and my favorites would definitely be their milkshakes and their waffle fries. Avoid at all costs. I do not say that lightly. I know that during covid, many places are hurting, but they are blatantly ripping off their customers! We came here this past Saturday, we got 3 sandwiches, 6 sides and 2 milkshakes, and our bill was $110. No aspect of our meal was worth it. Everything is so overpriced. We went to get the Fat Pilgrim, but by 630 or so, they ran out. Oh well it happens. I got the Fat Skeeter instead with Mozz sticks, Chicken Fingers, Cheesesteak, Cheese sauce, and Marinara... I spent $13 on it. I got 2 chicken Fingers, 2 Mozz sticks, a dismal shaving of Cheesesteak on the bottom and the 2 sauces. They are supposedly known for their overstuffed sandwiches... Well now they can be known for their overpriced sandwiches instead. My wife was very underwhelmed with her sandwich as well. She got the Hawk. Similar situation, more bread than insides. not worth the $14! Father in law got a cheesesteak that had 2 shavings of cheesesteak on it, also not worth the $9. They used to be known for huge sandwiches, but I guess instead of raising their prices, they shrunk their portions by half... We got a few sides, fries are ok, typical fries. They were out of most of their sides. We got 6 pickle spears for $6. I do not recommend that! I got Mozz sticks, they were ok. I also ordered the Honey BBQ wings which they said were not spicy, and they were super spicy! The chicken was good, but the sauce was super hot. We also got the Brownie dessert thing. It was greasy and hard as a rock on the outside. The inside was pretty good! And for some reason it was super sticky... All in all, don't go here. Is the food good? Its normal deli / bar food. If you go in expecting that, you will be satisfied. Is it worth the price? Absolutely not! If I got those same things at a bar, id be paying half that. Avoid! Fat sandwiches? Yes please! I catered from here for a party and it did not disappoint. The order was ready on time and nice and warm. Every sandwich was packed neatly. I ordered the fat gerald, fat tony, and fat falafel and everyone liked them. The sandwiches had just the right amount of sauce. The Mac and cheese bites were also a hit, especially with the kids. The waffle fries and onion rings were crispy and well seasoned. We had some leftovers but even reheated, the sandwiches were on point. It was a great value for the meal. Cheat night is in full effect! We've heard of fat sandwiches for the longest time. Even though I live in North Jersey I've always heard of the infamous fat sandwiches close to Rutgers University in New Brunswick. That being said it's nice to have an option up here in Montclair. We called our order in and upon arriving it was pretty much ready. We took it home and began to devour it. That being said here's the breakdown: Mac N Cheese Bites: Oh man totally happy we got these. These were literally fresh crunchy gooey bites of awesomeness. I would buy these over and over again. Mild Buffalo Wings: These were better than a lot of places I've been to that offer wings. They seemed pretty fresh to me which was a huge plus. Fat Hawk: I didn't change anything except getting ketchup instead of mustard on my sandwich. It was really awesome. The only thing is there's a lot of ingredients in it so because of that some of the individual flavors get lost in the Fat Hawk. That being said no regrets at all lol. So this place has basically turned into a food delivery hub. Nothing wrong with that in theory, but it means their customer service is non-existent if your want to take out like I wanted to. Normally, that would only factor into part of my review, but it was so bad that it sucked the rest of the experience into the black hole of suckitude. Story time: I walked over to Cars after making my order online. There I was, milling with a few other guys waiting for take out. The order hasn't been made yet. A little slow, but no big deal. 20 minutes later (this is going on 45-50 minutes after the order is made), my order comes out of the kitchen. Very slow, but they were pretty busy. The various people waiting milled over to the side to receive their orders. It was at this point the cashier's friend comes in. Instead of helping us, the cashier chats up the friend and takes his order, ignoring the rest of us. Finally takes the order, and then another one of his friends come, so he takes that guy's order too instead of taking 3 minutes to just hand the milling people who had made our orders an hour ago the food that was literally sitting almost arms reach from the counter. Finally the second friend has his order in. Just then, A delivery driver pushes his way to the front and demands his order, and the cashier actually gives it to that guy. Little did I know the secret was just to start pushing our way up and yelling to get our order! Well, maybe me and the other strangers waiting for our food didn't understand the culture. Seems like this place was pretty lax with any sort of rules, we should've just been more vocal and we would've gotten serviced. Fine, that's on me, I've learned my lesson for next time. I've been to places that operate on that kind of "free for all" mentality, it's not a deal breaker. Then the cashier looks at us, and without a word ducks into the kitchen and returns with the manager. He points out some people from the crowd, myself included, and tells us to put on masks or get out. No debate, no discussion. So it seems like they cared about one rule at least! Still, their restaurant, their rules. Kind of late in the COVID to be requiring masks just for takeout, but not crazy or anything. One other guy asks for a mask, I'm fine with wearing a mask and most places that require it will give one of those 5 cent masks on request. The manager isn't having it. "Get out." I'm a mile away from my house, I got meetings to get back to, if I'm walking home, I'm not walking back. It'd be different if they had told me 30 minutes ago when I first walked in, but nope! As the other guys file out, I walk up trying to get my order cancelled. "Get out." Fine. Keep my twenty bucks. Maybe they have amazing food, I wouldn't know and it's sad that I never will. I'd recommend ordering for delivery if you're getting this at all so someone else can deal with that nonsense at the actual store. Or better yet, go to Enzo Pizzeria next door where they actually treat you like a human being and will give you a mask if you ask for it, even though they don't require it. read more

This is the second time this month I've ordered Cars and have been very disappointed. Did they change chef's? Because the burgers don't tastes the same. I had to spit out the sweet potato fries because they tasted like soap. I also ordered cheese fries for the first time and all they did was just place a blob of cheese on the fries. Nothing like the photos online. (I've attached a photo) The orders are not always complete, my husband had to go pick up his food because they didn't give it to the Grubhub driver. It's so very disappointing because this was my go to spot. We had to throw out our $80.00 worth of food and purchase elsewhere. I use to love this place, but the food lately is just horrible. Milkshakes are good and I always get the fat Solomon w/out bacon cuz vegetarian. Open late, you'll find people from Tiernys once the bar closes cuz drunk munchies. Not sure why there's only 3 stars, it can take some time to make if they are busy but kind of surprised since this place is always busy. read more

Everything on the menu is absolutely drool worthy. My friend and I decided to go, and get a bunch of different things, and split them. The fat reptar is DELICIOUS, highly, highly suggest it. Their Mac n cheese bites are awesome. But the one thing that shocked me the most was the donut burger, it was the best thing, and probably the best burger I've had. Also the brownie bites are delicious. We ordered a ton of food, while the place was packed, and got our order way quicker than we expected. Everything is super fast except the shakes. Rush hour? New recruits? But there's a wait because of it at 10:40 pm. However, the people working were really nice. The lady at the counter was amazing dealing with the rush and back up wait with a room of folks standing around. And the food was good and what the kids expected! I feel bad for the shake station.
