I have been eating fast food burgers for decades. I have always found them to be OK to very good. McDonald's and Burger King are good standard fare. I personally find Wendy's to be above average, and In-N-Out to be excellent. But I have never refused to finish a fast food burger. Until today. My wife and I ordered the New Jersey burger and the mushroom burger. I don't know if it is my palate or the food, but they tasted odd to me. The meat was not greasy, and the lettuce and tomato are fresh and crisp. The food was very salty to the point of being a little bitter. And the taste of the burger was very unusual and unpleasant. After two bites, I put mine down and could not finish eating the burger. This was the first time I refused a fast food burger. Well, there is always the first time. Ahh Smashburger, how I love thee . . . definitely my favorite chain burger place available in North Jersey. Succulent, well seasoned meat, fresh buns, scrumptious fries, and fried pickles - makes me a happy man. Even moreso, Smashburger always has great service and is clean, no matter which location you end up visiting. This is a good place for a good hamburger. One issue is we ordered takeout and they came out with table service. The place is too noisy-I don't think the person could hear since she had to ask us to repeat the order twice. The table service was good and the lady got me some water since the order was not correct. I loved the very thin onion rings; they were excellent and the fries are good (but Mc'kD's are better-McDonalds knows fries). A friend recommends their sweet potato fries. My burger was good-a bit of grease but due to the way it is prepared I expected that and the cheese and bun were just right in amount with bread so i was happy. Remember 3 stars mean go here and get a good meal and since it is a chain you don't have to travel here from afar to get one of their burgers. I like the haystack onions as a side and the sauce it comes with is really tasty. The servers are polite, although I went when it was almost empty. I'd been painting all day followed by running errands, I hadn't eaten since 10 AM and I would have eaten the steering wheel if it had been edible. "Eff the diet", I said. "I NEED FOOD! I WANT JUNK!" The fastest place that didn't involve reheated pizza that had been sitting out all day at Anthony Franco's was Smashburger. I got a build-your-own regular burger with barbecue sauce, grilled onions, cheddar and tomato, a side of sweet potato fries, and a side salad. I wish these places would stack these things correctly. I had to completely rearrange the off-kilter burger when I got it home. But the burger was tasty (if a tad oversalted), the onions had a nice bite to them, and the whole thing was delicious. I had started digging into the sweet potato fries in the car, and much to my amazement, there was NO grease at all on my hands. THAT is a sign that they know how to deep fry. The salad was decent -- some mixed greens and usual fast food salad stuff, but it was fresh -- no brown edges here. The whole thing was twelve bucks, which is a cheap dinner, but not when I think of how the same twelve bucks would have bought me three dinners' worth of Chinese takeout. One of my favorite places to take my kids for a good meal away from home. They have something for everyone and definitely reasonably priced for the food you get. I seem to be increasingly drawn to this apparent new trend of 'gourmet' burger joints. This place is neither gourmet, or a joint. But it's probably worth a visit if you're into this sort of thing. Their gimmick is the "Smash" which has the unfortunate effect of making your patty look like road kill in a bun, but boy, is it juicy.... One can feel the arteries clogging with every bite, and you find yourself not caring. I got the spicy Baja, which was basically guac, chipotle sauce and pepper jack. The bun was chipotle too, but the mustard yellow looking interior and almost stale texture didn't work for me. I'm also of the mindset the a burger is a burger. There is no need to fuck with a good concept to differentiate yourself from the others in the niche, as such, I'm always disappointed that I didn't stick with the "classic". Plus points: very clean, fast service that is a cut above "fast food", and the juiciest burger that wasn't served to me in a 5* Manhattan steak restaurant. Cons: there are just other places that do this better: Bobby's or Five Guys spring to mind. read more

I very much dislike Five guys and was expecting a similar experience, however, the food was so tasty. IT seems like they took the normal everything and added extra flavor. Big fan of Smashbuger now. This location is busy, the parking lot is a dangerous parking place, but well worth the trip. First - the chain is one of the better "up scale" burger joints in my opinion. For several reasons. The burgers are quite good, the fries are excellent and the salads s are what set's the whole concept way above the others. Any problems with an order or slow service is dealt with professionally and over & above the expectations for the issue. Replacement food is delivered, free coupons are offered, I have been amazed at how "behind" the brand all the staff is. Whatever they're doing, every Smash location I've visited, the workers are incredibly friendly and helpful. Unlike the Mickey you-know-what burger places. All the burgers are quite good, made fresh and worth the money and the short wait. The only negative was the new fresh mex item was a little dry. They cook their burgers to a fairly well done-ness & that new burger item was good but not great. The fried veggies are different and a change of pace from the fries. Definite plus on the rosemary fries, again different but a great item. Prices have been mentioned as being a bit high. I don't see that, the salads and burgers are fairly priced, especially in the Wendy's/BK/McD upper priced menu choices. No comparison at all in the bang/buck quotient. read more

I would like to take the time out to write this to make everyone fully aware that last night 2/1/12 I ate at the Paramus, NJ location. I ordered a spicy chicken sandwich with smash fries . Upon leaving I began to feel nauseated and was sick throughout the entire night. I believe the lettuce in the food I ate at this location was spoiled or had some type of chemical in it that made me sick. I'm a dissatisfied customer and I'll never eat there again, it was a major turn off and I'm sorry to have to be writing this in the first place. read more

I've went to the Paramus location of Smashburger after visiting the Hackensack location. Undoubtedly - this one is working much more smoothly. The Burger and meat in general gets its taste from the searing action of the meat. In Smashburger they produce a large searing surface and unlike the usual "thick and bland" burgers - they create a lot of taste. I would say they have one of the best techniques for cooking the burgers. On top of that I was able to customize the bun and the ample selection of toppings. Rather then picking the standard "pre-assembled" burgers I opted for the create-your-own and customized a spicy Chipotle bun burger with 5 toppings. Once I sat down it took the burger 5 minutes to get to my table (yes, they bring it to you) and it was fresh. The lettuce was fresh and NOT shredded which is certainly a great taste booster - I hate the shredded prepackaged ones. Finally I had fresh warm fries - nothing fancy, but I had a side of Smash Sauce to dip in - highly recommended. Having visited all the different Burger places(including Fuddruckers, Five Guys, Bobby's Burger Palace and others) Smashburger has the best freshest burger around. read more

I love these burgers. Everything I expected to hate - relatively thin, not greasy, - plastic trays- but those burgers and buns together are delicious! High quality bun and burgers with just the right amount of griddled crispiness. Definitely a fan of the nutter butter milk shakes too. The fries are just ok, and the fried pickles way too salty. I gave it four out of five stars because I don't know what a 5 star rating would really entail. I introduced myself to Smashburger with a Classic Smash burger and Smash fries. The angus burger was great. The fries had a distinct smell which may had taken away from fully appreciating the burger taste. However, the fries tasted great as well. I received less fries in comparison to other burger-centric establishments but I'm not complaining since I wouldn't had been able to consume more food anyway since my appetite and my curiosity had been fully satisfied. read more

Greasy, but delicious. Not as good as Bobby's Burger Palace but definitely good. I had the New Jersey Super Smash and was impressed by the onion haystacks. They really added a lot of flavor and were good enought that I wish I had ordered them as a side. Instead I had the Veggie frites which were ok but really oily. Sweet potato fries looked pretty good, I'll probably give them a try when I head back on 12-12-12 since the restaurant is going to donate $2 to Sandy victims for every Jersey burger that is purchased. read more
