Yesterday as one family member was working in the front yard, she was alerted by our hyper-smart dog that they were being watched. Turns out, on the sidewalk across the street sat a little scared ball of something staring at them. My partner then came and told me about the little ball of something that "looked" at her and needed help. So there we were, me in my PJ's and slippers with doggy treats in hand, my partner in gardening gloves we tryed to talk to the little ball of something. With a little coaxing and eventual cornering managed to pick up what turned out to be a poodle sporting some serious dirt colored Bob Marley dreds and completely infested with ticks. Well we all know that poodles should not try to channel Bob Marley or host ticks for dinner. We then took the little pup to our home and gave her water and food and then made a few phone calls. (By now we have decided that our 2 animal limit rule was safe as this is a tiny poodle and one of our 2 dogs is missing a leg). While on the phone I was able to make arrangements for vaccinations and I made a couple of calls to see if someone could help with grooming. That's how we ended up at Smelly Dog! We weren't certain anyone would help out Stella (yes we named her already) due to the tick infestation and just the poor poor condition she was in. The folks at Smelly Dog did not bat an eye. The groomer did an amazing job of trimming all of the horrible matted hair (remember, no dreds for poodles) and removing an amazing amount of gross blood sucking ticks. They even sent us home with a pair of tick tweezers at no charge so we could continue the process at home. From beginning to end the staff was gracious and helpful. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! THEY ABUSED MY DOGS! I went to Smelly Dog for the first time this past week and I was told over the phone when I called ahead that there was no appointment necessary for the full dog wash (done by staff) and that it typically took one hour or so to complete. I showed up there with my two dogs and there was one car in the parking lot. It was empty inside except for the clerk who was busy putting together a small gift box and continued to do for about two minutes before she finally greeted me. I told her I was a first time customer but she didn't thank me for coming in or explain to me anything about how the process there works. At this point, I was feeling a little uneasy leaving my dogs with her. She was rude and not friendly and I just got a weird feeling about her. Either way, she took my two dogs back into the wash room and put a small leash around their necks and hooked them to a wall to wait to be washed. THe clerk told me it would be about an hour. My boyfriend and I went out to lunch and returned 50 minutes later. As I was walking up to the store I looked through the window to see if I could see my dogs in the back room. They were in the same exact spot that I left them in 50 minutes earlier. My older dog WITH CANCER currently on chemotherapy had peed herself and my younger dog was shaking with her tail between her legs. The dogs WERE NOT GIVEN ANY WATER and the leashes they were attached to were so short that they couldn't even lay down. I went in and asked why my dogs had not been started yet and the clerk said,"Some people came in to pick up their dogs so we got a little backed up." There was literally not one single car in the parking lot when I first arrived or when I came back. There was one dog waiting in a pin. There were two other workers walking around the back. I was FURIOUS. I took my dogs right out of there and took them home to bath them myself. I WILL NEVER EVER TRUST THESE PEOPLE WITH MY DOGS AGAIN! THEY HAD ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM LEAVING MY DOGS IN THE HOT WASHROOM STANDING FOR AN HOUR WITH NO WATER. The clerk was so unfriendly and awkward. I do not understand how this place got so man good reviews. The only reason I tried it was because it had so many nice reviews on this website, but perhaps those were times when the old owner was working there. DO NOT TRUST THESE PEOPLE! read more

I have been to numerous groomers over the past 6mo, I heard from a co-worker about smelly dog and tried it out today. Our groomer was Lia Clark, she did an awesome job!! I will definitely be taking her back in 4 weeks. Lia was friendly and took the time to get to know Lola's situation and I was able to leave her with ease. I was impressed on how she was patient and soothed my dog of her anxiety. The only thing negative I have to say is about one of the assistants who trimmed my other dogs nails. She was very unfriendly and unapproachable and when I asked to have her nails trimmed, she made me feel like I had inconvenienced her. read more

Today was my first time at Smelly Dog. I had very high expectations because of friends that take their pups here. I love that this place is close to home and have good prices. Staff was friendly and helped me find the things that I have been looking for. I let the staff know it was my first time bringing my boxer, that I was nervous and I wasn't sure how she was going to be around other dogs in the store. They took her back and trimmed her nails while I talked to an employee and paid for her treatment. While my dog came back out I asked how she did and they told me that she must've done pretty good since it only took about 5 minutes. Unfortunately, when we got home and I had a chance to look at the work they had done I was very unhappy. Her nails were jagged, broken and not smoothed out. So cute! Just moved to Midtown Phoenix/Biltmore area.. I am very picky where I bring my little Dolce. Just needed a quick nail trim, no stress. I called to ask about pricing and if I needed an appointment. The clerk was very polite, gave me the address, and even directions (without me asking for them). I was very pleasantly surprised when I walked in. It had an adorable boutique feel with homemade dog food, cakes, and doggie organic perfume. My girl got her teeth brushed, toe nails clipped, and a bag of chewy treats for $12 bucks! (I checked in on FB for $5 off) What a deal! And what a great experience. I went on vacation over the 4th of July holiday and needed to board my American Bully rescue for the first time since I got him. I was very nervous about it for many reasons but number one being that I didn't want my dog to feel abandoned again. I was quickly put to ease with the staff and vibe of smelly dog from the moment I walked in. I received pictures and updates via text through out my dogs stay as well! We take our two dogs here every week for daycare. One of our dogs even gets his grooming done here as well! I have to say I didn't know what to expect as this was our first venture into daycare for the pups, but it has changed our lives. Our dogs love it so much they are practically out the door without me on the day that they go, and when we come home that night they are tired out for the next two days! The staff is always friendly and knows the dogs by name as soon as we walk in. I have a French Bulldog who needs extra breaks during the summer, and they are more than happy to meet his needs. Best of all the dogs are not locked up in individual kennels (like the creepy place down the street) before they go outside. Great job Smelly Dog - I wish you offered boarding as well! read more

I brought my dogs in for the first time this weekend, they are extremely skiddish and I told them that when I handed them my two cockapoos. They came back with scabs and cuts on their face, behind their ears and on their stomachs. Not going back and I would recommend other to not go there. Arrived on this toasty planet the first of June and immediatly sought the dog parks as Baxter is quite the social butterfly. Spoke with other owners and was recommended to Smelly Dog as well as a couple of others. SD was closest so we tried one Saturday after a rather odiferous visit to the Maryland street dog park. I have a bad back so bathing in the tub at home, even with the additional shower head, always took a while to recupe from. This place was great, provided shampoo, combs, towels, dryers and even came back to make sure we had everything we needed and then only charged me $15 dollars. WOW, nothing like this back home, if I move back there will be!!! Second visit was moving day, finally found an apartment and wanted Bax taken care of and out of the craziness (he also needed a "desert do," he's a hot dog). Great babysitters and groomers. Bax was very handsome when I picked him up and because of our positive first visit, I felt good about leaving him there. They were very attentive to his ears and helpful with suggestions on a closer cut than he's used to. I keep him a lot longer back home but they did such a good job and he's still the cutest with his new do, I'll probably keep it this way. He loves being clean and goes nuts after his bath, very playful. Moving day, of course, was nuts, didn't start when it was supposed to, lasted longer and all I could think of was Baxter in a new place. When I went to pick him up I was told they would not accept checks (something I'm running into a lot down here), having given most of my cash to the movers, I had about $50 left in my pocket. They accepted this for a $60 charge, what sweethearts. I was still waiting for my debit card from my new bank account so I was tapped but these guys were soooo nice. Baxter must have been a very good boy. Needless to say, I have received my debit card and returned to pay the difference and will continue to return with Baxter. The staff is great and went beyond helpful. One of the most positive experiences I have had since getting here. Thank you again and again. Ever since they moved to their new location, customer service has gone extremely downhill. I drive 35 minutes away to take her here because I used to be so impressed with them. Last time I took my dog here, I was told it would be about two hours and they would call me when she was done. I waited 4 hours and decided to just go in and check on her. She had been done for 2 hours already and the employee said "I guess we forgot to let you know" with no apology or anything as my dog is just sitting back there by herself. Not to mention she called her a golden retriever and tried to overcharge me when she's actually a small lab. I have always been told that walk ins are allowed for the bath services, so I decided to drive 35 minutes here and give them another chance. Upon walking in, there are 4 employees at the front that all just stood there and did not even greet me. As I stood at the counter waiting, not being acknowledged, then when someone finally asked me what I needed (just a bath) was told to come back another time. Again, with NO apology or any attempt to accommodate me. Customer service sucks and I'm extremely disappointed with this place. I will never be using this place again. Good thing I discovered another groomer just down the street with more educated, decent, and friendly employees. read more

We've had hit and miss here with groomers and them keeping tabs on groomer comments, one visit our dog was great, the next he's been having issues but we weren't told that in previous visits. Our local dog wash was under reconstruction, so we thought we would give Smelly dog a try. Upon arrival, it was like walking into a twilight zone. Clueless clerks standing at the front desk and no one said one word. When I asked if they had wash bin's, one clerk had no clue what we were talking about. The other two just starred at us. I had to basically spell out that we wanted a "self wash." Another clerk took us to the wash area which was empty except for one person washing their Shepard. She actually put us directly next to him. I asked why we couldn't use another one to avoid spraying the customer or getting sprayed. Her response was that it was their process. She gave us two broken aprons and walked away with no instruction or care to see if there were any additional utensils. Shampoo smelled like watered down Palmolive dish soap. Clerks were completely disengaged and disinterested in any form of customer service. Staff kept walking in the back room and congregating. No concern for customers at all. We will not be back. Its a shame because the location is great. Staff has no clue how to deal with people! Just don't waste your time. read more

Went here for the self service dog wash, it was awesome! Friendly and very helpful service, all natural soaps, brushes, and even aprons (which were very helpful) the tub it's self was very cool because it is on a lift so the tub can actually lower onto ground for the dog to get in, and they make sure the water temperature is good. We drove all the way from Glendale to go here and it was definitely worth it. After the bath we looked at the treats which were very cute and ended up buying Elk Antlers which were a very good price compared to Petco. We also bought this adorable collar, only $25 and it's great quality and made of leather. I will definitely come here again! You can tell they really care about not only their human clientele, but the furry clientele as well. read more

I wonder if Admin will allow this review to stay posted. When I started supporting Smelly Dog I had one pet but I now have many pets that go to Smelly Dog for services. I have recommended Smelly Dog to others who have now been taking their pets there for grooming services for some time now based on my recommendation. I will no longer be taking any of my pets there and I will also be telling others to no longer support Smelly Dog and to take their pets elsewhere. I took two of my dogs there today (11/30/2016). One for a nail trimming and another for grooming (which previously included the nail trimming). I was charged 57.00 for the dog that was groomed and had nails trimmed when it was previously 42.00. Maybe it is my fault for not asking what the charge would be but I did not ask since I was previously charged 42.00. Also, the staff at Smelly Dog did not state a price so I still expected to pay only 42.00 total for the grooming and nail trimming for this dog. When I asked the staff why there was a difference in price from last time I also asked if the prices had increased. The staff said the prices had not increased but the breakdown of charges was 47.00 for grooming and 10.00 for the nail trimming. When I stated that I was previously charged only 42.00 for both the grooming and nail trimming the staff responded somewhat rudely by stating that they have always charged a base price of 47.00 for grooming of a small dog and then 10.00 for the nail trimming. I again told the staff that they had previously charged me a lower price for both services. A second staff member advised that there was a different manager at that time who was not on board with the direction that they were wanting to go so there is a new manager now. I went ahead and paid the new full fee but afterwards asked then to look up the charges from the last grooming. When they looked up the charges they confirmed that I had in fact only paid 42.00 for the grooming and nail trimming combined and, knowing this; made no attempt to rectify the current charges. I would have even been ok with them saying they would only charge the 42.00 this time but the charges would be higher going forward. Instead, they all just stood there looking at me as if they were still wondering why I was questioning the charges even after they confirmed I had paid a lower price before. The groomer did not do as good of a job as the last time so they had to take my pet in the back again to re-groom. Once my pet came back out, a third staff member offered to note my account of the lower price for future groomings. I declined and told them that I would just take all of my pets elsewhere. They said "Ok." My thought is if they are willing to charge the lower price next time they should also be willing to only charge me the lower price this time. Today, it was just one dog for nail trimming and one dog for grooming/nail trimming but there are approximately 10 other pets from friends and family members that will no longer be supporting Smelly Dog. I have also notified a neighbor who volunteers with multiple pet adoption shelters. They frequently take the pets who are waiting to be adopted in for grooming. They will now also take their business elsewhere. The good news for me is that this neighbor has recommended a groomer that does a great job and is closer to home. The price is even more reasonable than what I used to pay at Smelly Dog. Even though they will not be going out of business because of me there is a lot of business lost. Although the prices didn't go up (according to them) I was charged more than before and they confirmed this. I will definitely tell anyone looking for a groomer to go elsewhere - all for a difference of 15.00 and now bad publicity for this small business. read more

They didn't even drummels my dog's nails after I scheduled an appointment with them. I had to wait two weeks for the a appointment and when the time came, they took my dog via curbside and did not even drumme my dog's nails. I had to wait an hour in the parking lot for the service to be done and they did not do anything. I emailed them to let them know and heard absolutely nothing. I called the shop and spoke with Tony who gave an excuse that they were extremely busy and then they referred me over to The manager Marc who did not apologize or even consider a refund. Why did you bill me for a service you did not provide? I understand we are going through a Pandemic but there is absolutely no excuse to to bill me for a service you did not provide. I simply asked for a refund you Marc said no. I live 40 minutes away and have been a loyal customer for 6 years. I'm simply asking for a refund. My little Frenchie Squeak has been going to smelly dog for almost 2 years! Daycare is his happy place! He is the most stubborn little piglet but when he hears "daycare" he cooperates! He heads to daycare with lots of energy and comes home sleepy! I can go on and on about the staff!!! They are the best!! They kiss him, carry him back in their arms when I don't have a leash, update me on his every move, and most importantly protect his spine. Squeak had a herniated disc while in my care at home in Minnesota. He became paralyzed, had an MRI and back surgery. The vet recommended rest period is 6-8 weeks. Very difficult to do while working full time and once healing has started and pups start feeling better. He did his boarding at Smelly dog while I was on night shift. Sue the night manager took care of Squeak like he was her own. I am thrilled to say he has made a complete recovery! He has full use of his legs and I owe it in part to the staff at smelly dog! Just the other day I stopped back at daycare and caught the staff in action. Squeak was trying to jump and they were reminding him not to. With 20 dogs to watch over that attention to detail is amazing! The staff can have a million things on their plate but still give your dog all the love and attention in the world! Sadly we recently moved but I drive 30 mins out of my way to drop him off at Smelly dog and 30 minutes out of my way to pick him up! read more

I recently brought my toy Pomeranian here to get groomed and I was beyond pleased with the results! By far the BEST hair cut my dog has ever gotten. I made an appointment to get my labradoodle groomed and they had availability with short notice. It was my dogs first time visiting the groomer. Trish did amazing! My dog came home happy and looking beautiful! The entire staff here is so kind and helpful. They're all amazing! I even went in earlier this week looking for a paw balm and the team was able to help me find what I was looking for and even suggested a protectant to help their pads in the heat.
