I am super disappointed in Smiles Ortho. I got my braces when Dr. Larson first began and it was Smiles By Sutherland. I grew up getting my braces treatment here along with my brother. Unfortunately, I recently lost both of my clear retainers while moving and I really just needed to get new retainers from stopping my teeth shifting anymore in the meantime. Given my financial situation, I asked if I could make monthly payments for the $450 new set of retainers and they were not willing to help me or work with me at all as it would need to be upfront only. The financial advisor Taylor said she talked to Dr. Larsen and they still said they have no options for me nor did they have any recommendations. I feel like sad that my childhood ortho seems to only care about the money and have no regard for your situation. I live in Portland now and was willing to drive but it is sad they chose not to help. Smiles orthodontics is by far the most unprofessional experience I have ever had. After weeks of calling my family asking about our appointment for our daughter and having them confirm said appointment repeatedly every time they called. They then proceeded to not see our daughter over the fact that their receptionist didn't like the tone my fiancé had with her on the phone; over their extremely clunky scheduling process. Smiles orthodontics is awesome. I'm probably about half way through my stint with braces and the experience has been wonderful. Dr. Larson and his team create an inviting atmosphere. Staff are always pleasant and accommodating. Both the downtown Puyallup and Graham facilities are hip and well maintained. Since I am an adult with braces, the expectations may be different than the great majority of their patients. They spend good chunk of time during the work up phase prior to braces which made me feel like they were tailoring my regimen to me rather than to a set protocol. Probably the most important thing is that Dr. Larson and team spend an invaluable few minutes during each visit informing me of the goals for each interval before the next visit. Conveying the reason behind each tweak of my braces therapy gives me a good idea of what I need to focus on and what to expect for the 4-6 weeks before the next visit. For example, they tell me that they are placing a wire with a wider arch so that I can hopefully achieve a broader smile. Or, that I need to wear elastic bands to close up gaps between my upper and lower teeth when I have my mouth shut. Many doctors overlook the importance of adding that extra personal touch. Not Dr. Larson. I would recommend him and his team 100% of the time! On a side note, I can't believe that somebody gave Smiles a harsh one star because a visit had to be extended by a few weeks. Braces take time. The initial estimated time to complete is exactly that...an estimation. You got to go with the flow a bit more. I have no problem waiting many months longer so I can get the best final product as possible. read more

Dr Larson and the entire team have been outstanding for the entire year and a half my son had braces. They clearly have great processes - everything is super easy to navigate from finance options to appointments. The staff has been consistently friendly and helpful in every interaction. Dr. Larson and his team have been very clear about my child's treatment, and have offered great service. My problem is that they do not require masks in this facility, as a healthcare provider. There is simply a sign at the front door telling you to "be smart". I don't think running a business with unvaccinated kids during a Delta variant surge, without masks, is smart. I am delaying my child's further treatment until he can be vaccinated. I will not bring my second child here for evaluation. read more

My son had to have a top set of braces to save a tooth. I was worried about cost and affording them but knew we needed them. The doctor and office worked with me and I am glad to say we did it! Now we will be getting the second set for top and bottom soon and I feel confident we can afford it, proud we will be doing that and so comfortable because the office is very cute, clean and entertaining. They are welcoming with bottle water of coffee bar, and staff that's top notch. The dentist had a heart of God and it shows he loves kids and his job!!!!!! We are a year into treatment and we have had a good experience with Dr Larson and his team. The previous posts by Penny is somewhat accurate for normal appointments, they are quite booked up in advanced. But I have never had any issues getting into see them if it is an emergency. Most of the time any type of minor 'emergency' (loose wire, loose bracket, extreme pain) has been scheduled the day of my call. They have two offices (Puyallup and Graham) so you may have to travel for emergency appointment. In regards to cost - they are slightly above (~200.00) some of the other providers quotes but all had the same treatment path and it was worth the additional cost to have a closer orthodontist. read more

Let's face it, orthodontics are both medical and cosmetic, and not inexpensive. For my kids it was not just cosmetic. Smiles Ortho made it affordable through an interest free payment plan to help our children get the care they needed. He also did not try to provide more services than what was necessary. We have finished with one child and will go back for phase 2 with another (child had a scissor bite that was fixed in less then a year). I first encountered Dr. Sutherland about 10 yrs ago as a referral from my Dentist. They said my daughter had an overbite and needed braces, Dr. Sutherland said different! She has a beautiful set of teeth at 21 yrs old now. So when my sons front teeth started coming in crooked, I took him to only ONE Ortho man...you know who. He fixed my son up with an apparatus that fixed his front teeth in no time. Dr. Sutherland continued to have my son back for checkups to see how he was progressing. Now that he is ready for braces (11 yrs) I didn't even consider taking him anywhere else. I figure if Dr. Sutherland could be honest enough to decline putting braces on one of my children, he would be honest enough to do the right thing with my other child AND he does WONDERFUL work. read more

I went to Dr. Sutherland for a consult for my son. My main concern was that his jaw was not growing and not just straightening his teeth. They kept saying "well you could just straighten his teeth and it would be $x amount. But the real issue is his jaw and to fix that it would be $x amount more." I felt like they weren't listening to my concerns. My son has since gone to a different orthodontist in Auburn and they addressed my concerns and they were $2000.00 cheaper!!
