The office hours are weird (long mid day breaks) but the downgrade is because they couldn't take our dog the day she needed to be put down. That's not acceptable. Just called Smiley's to schedule an appointment for one of our cats, but was on the phone so I couldn't take the call. Smiley's left a voicemail that I was less than pleased with. She sounded very salty and sassy because we took our cat to a different veterinarian in the past. Mind you, would you go to a different clinic if they could see you sooner? We never told them we were leaving but according to smiley vet, you're not allowed to go to any other vet but them. The saved voice message reads as follows "unfortunately it's our understanding that you switched to another vet" and " hopefully the vet that you switched to can take care of that cut, alrighty bye bye" She had a vindictive tone as if she got broken up with. But don't worry, I WILL GO TO THAT OTHER VET, and every other vet around. read more

When my vet in VT (who I traveled 2 hours for apts for 20 years) retired during Covid, I was terrified of going to a new vet. I heard all of the stories about the ridiculous bills in NH vets and was told that you were not even allowed to be with your animal for most of the yearly exam. I refuse to let anyone take either of my dogs "out back". One is terrified of the world and the other is a 100 plus pound dog who can twirl most people around like a sack of potatoes. I had spent the last year looking at people's recommendations for vets and Dr. Smiley kept coming up. When I called to get answers to questions, his wife was extremely helpful and patient in answering everything. One of my concerns was that he would retire soon and sell out like all of the other small vets are doing. She assured me that their son was keeping the practice and that I would like him. This will be my 5th year using them. I have had Dr. Smiley twice and the son twice and my fearful dog allows them both to examine her without shaking and without showing her teeth which is almost unheard for her. The big guy loves everyone and the son grants him tons of butt rubs which makes his day. The whole practice is friendly, helpful and the cost is very comparable to what I paid in VT which is about a 1/3 of what people are paying to these vet offices that were bought out by big corporations. The office is very a "old feel" vet office but welcoming. They don't have examining tables so they get down with your animal which makes mine feel much more comfortable. I don't know why they get bad reviews as I have had nothing but good experiences and can see they both know what they are doing and do it well. No one has ever been hostile but maybe it is cause I don't go in looking for a fight. I don't leave messages. I just call back till they have time to answer the phone. read more

I have been bringing my animals to Smiley for a few years now and they have been great. They know who my animals are and their history each time we visit. You aren't just a number. They are a small business which comes with pro and cons. Sometimes in the past it may take a few tries to reach them but they always reply to messages. It can happen sometimes when you have a small staff. That seems to have improved over the last few months though. Likewise because they are a small business they can set their own prices.THEY ARE HANDS DOWN THE MOST REASONABLE IN THE AREA!!!! I don't have to worry about affording care for my animals like you would at most places. ***Important*** that in no way means they lack quality!!! My pets have received great care. Even though we now live over an hour away, I still prefer to make the drive to Smiley. With prices of everything sky high right now, they are doing a massive service to the community by offering reasonably priced service. read more

I've been calling this office for almost two months to get my records - absolutely none of my calls were picked up and I eventually started calling from different numbers just in case mine was blocked. I made inquiries on their website til just a few weeks ago when they took down their inquiries online. I called today and finally someone answered and told me there was a message that said NOT to send me my records until I paid my "fees" but couldn't tell me how much. I refused to talk to the wife/receptionist and he put me through to Dr Smiley. After handing over my credit card info they sent me my records and I saw the message. Attached I have also provided my caller log showing just how many times I called AHEAD of my appointment to try and cancel. I left 4 voicemails that day and called multiple times. I never called at 3:40 to cancel my 3:35 appt. I will admit I did say I would go to the appt when they first called me at 9am - that was until we got a foot of snow and so many trees fell that they CLOSED Harvey Road... I would also like to mention I have to bring my cat who was spayed at Smileys to a new vet to be spayed again because she is STILL going into heat, having a swollen abdomen and mammary track due to having not done the spaying correctly.. This vet is unprofessional. They do not return calls. It is so difficult getting them on the phone to make an appointment. They have false records saying my compliance was not good and didn't show up for appointments and are terrible at customer service; downright hostile. There is no follow-through. The younger vet cannot get blood for a small blood test without causing harm to my dog because he is inexperienced. They will not hold a reasonable conversation and if they encounter any accountability or answering questions, they will discontinue your service. I originally went to them because they were common sense during covid and would stand to reason. Something has happened. read more

We have been going here for about 4 years and have had nothing but great experiences. Both Dr. Smiley Sr. and Jr. put the animals first and foremost which is unlike some of the other vets we have been to in the area. They do not charge you an arm and a leg and they care for your animal like they are their own. They are also very thorough and take their time during every visit. We have never felt rushed and have always been given the opportunity to ask questions. I would highly recommend them to anyone in the area who is looking to give their pets the best care around. We have been going to Dr Smiley for years . However as of late service isn't what it used to be . I think it's because they have taken on so many patients . It takes 2 or 3 days to get a call back if it's not important. But I wouldn't call if it wasn't important to me. So important to them and important to the caller could be 2 different things . The woman who answers the phone is not very personable. Sometimes she's just outright rude. Dr Smiley's younger son that answers the phone is really nice. I also feel when I bring my pets in for a physical they aren't fully looked at . It's like a quick 2 minute check over. The other thing is they don't accept Care Credit . Which is super inconvenient. Oh and you have to order RX's through the only pharmacy they use. You don't have a choice in the matter. Which sucks because they charge for shipping so you're paying shipping on top of the expensive RX . Because of this I just have the office order it for me and it gets delivered to them. Which is inconvenient because then I have to find time to go pick it up instead of it coming to my house..I stay because I have 6 pets and it's a pain to find a vet who can take them all . So for now we stay until we can't any longer . Both Dr Smiley's are very friendly to the pets as well as the pet parents . My review is very conflicted. I like it there but at the same time I don't. Horrible experience! Shame on them! My dog needed emergency surgery by an injection that got infected after her visit there. They refused to admit that it was their fault. The emergency vet said there was no other reason why it could have happened. Allergic reaction to the shot is highly unlikely but it happens. There were no scratches on her! No bug bites! They made excuses. Also if you want to be physically touched in the parking lot over 62 dollars then sure by all means go there. I can't believe the lack of compassion. They would have made her wait until the morning for surgery also! After telling me the infection could rupture!! How just how?? She now has a drainage in her and is being properly taken care of by other vets. DO NOT GO THERE!!! read more

I'm writing this review because Dr. Smiley will not give me a prescription for my dog's heart worm pills. I ordered her pills from the Tractor Supply pharmacy and he ignored the prescription for a couple of days. I called to ask why and he said that I have to order her prescription through his online store. He said he will give me her prescription but he won't give me her prescription. I told him that his online store is more expensive than Tractor Supply and he said that's how he keeps his prices down. His prices aren't that low. I want to pay a fair price for my pet's care and a fair price for her prescription and I believe it is unethical for Dr. Smiley to withhold her prescription and to only fill prescriptions through his online store. When I mentioned Tractor Supply he scoffed at me. I felt like he did a "hint hint wink wink" by saying he will give me her prescription while not giving me her prescription. I decided not to bring my dog back to him and I received an email reminder stating that she is due for her heartworm shot soon. I replied to the email to remove us from their email list and we won't be back to his clinic and he replied to my email, "gladly". He would rather lose clients/patients than to rectify problems. This is the N.H. Code Admin. R. Vet 501.01: Ethical Standards: "All licensed veterinarians shall comply with the Principles of Veterinary Medical Ethics of the AVMA as revised April 2016 and available as noted in Appendix II." From the AVMA which is the American Veterinary Medical Association: "Dispensing or prescribing a prescription product requires a VCPR 1. Veterinarians should honor a clients request for a prescription in lieu of dispensing. " VCPR is Veterinarian Client Patient Relationship. I don't like to write or say bad things but my dog is without her heartworm pills because I don't want to be forced to buy her prescription from Dr. Smiley's online store. His online store is run by an online pet pharmacy business which I am not a customer of and I don't want to be a customer of due to lawsuits against them. How is it legal to be forced to order her prescription through his online store with them when it appears to be steering. I don't want to do business with them. I just want to use the pharmacy of my choice and Dr. Smiley to give me the prescription but he won't. I believe his demand to buy the prescription from him is unethical. He is "glad" to lose us as clients instead of simply giving us her prescription. I checked with another local vet that has been in business a lot longer than Dr. Smiley and they will give us her prescription to fill at a pharmacy of our choice. We will bring her back to that vet for her prescription. Dr. Smiley has the right to charge for the prescription so I can fill it elsewhere but he didn't give me that option. I wish he could help me to understand how paying more through his affiliate link benefits me and my pet when it appears to benefit him and the pharmacy he partners with financially. I want to add a couple positive things. My dog likes Dr. Smiley. I liked him too. I made an appointment with him due to covid. Her regular vet is backed up two months and he was able to see her right away and he will go outside. She is an anxious dog and not having to bring her inside is a convenience and he even does house calls. I read negative things about his wife. Working with the public can be stressful. I always tried to be kind to her to ease her stress and she was always kind to me on the phone. I hoped to continue bringing my pets to Dr. Smiley but I don't understand why he withheld her prescription from me and I got the feeling on the phone that he thought I was being stingy. I don't want cheap care for my pets. I want good care for them and I will pay for good care. If he isn't charging enough and trying to make up for it by mandating prescriptions are filled through his pharmacy, he should charge more. I never argued prices and I wouldn't. I wanted to choose my own pharmacy which I believe is a right. I felt insulted and let down by being scoffed at by him and that he is "glad" to lose my business when I wanted my interactions with him and his wife to be positive and stress free for them, for me and for my pets. At this point, I am still without my dog's heartworm pills because I can't fathom an acceptable reason he won't release her prescription to me. I hoped Dr. Smiley could help me to understand privately on the phone and when I contacted him by email but he didn't so maybe this review will encourage him to change his policy and give a prescription when it's requested and needed. read more

I have seen Dr. Smiley Twice and I thought he was a good vet. Today my dog started having serious problems. I called Dr. Smiley and left an urgent message at 11:30 am. I got no return call. I left another message at 12:15 pm and again at 1:30 pm. Still no return call. I called again at 2:15 pm and the woman that answered the phone (finally) told me to bring my dog to an emergency clinic because Dr. Smiley was booked for the afternoon. Is this what is supposed to happen when you have a vet? I thought if there was an emergency your vet would see your dog. Not so. And our messages were never returned. I thought Dr. Smiley would be a good vet but I guess I was wrong. And the person in the office is very, very rude. She told me she was there until noon but my call to them at 11:30 am was never answered and my urgent message was never returned. Not a good place to do business with. I have been taking my dogs to Dr Smiley since he opened in Auburn NH. He has made many house calls to my home. I would like to say that he is the best Veterianian that I have ever gone too. He is smart, compassionate and very caring. Recently I had an emergency with one of my dogs, Dr Smiley was in surgery but his son Dr Jake Smiley took me right in. I had never been to him before. Well, I would like to say He is his Father's son. Good, kind, compassionate. He diagnosed my dogs illness almost immediately and did a blood sugar test and sure enough my little one has diabetes. I went in thinking I was going to have to put her to sleep, I was a mess! And I came out with and plan and all the medication that I needed. We are now working on getting her blood sugar under control. So if you are looking for compassion and wonderful care this is the place to take your babies! Thank You Dr Smiley and Dr Jake.
