The old courthouse now houses the tax offices as well as a small museum that both locals and tourists will find helpful. The museum and first floor of the tax office is open to the public on the first Sunday of every month for downtown's big "First Sunday" festivities. They offer tours and have volunteer guides that are more then happy to show you around. They've done a lovely job giving guests a timeline or not only the courthouse, but also the history of Chatham County: school systems, agriculture, family lineage, etc. With personal testimonies from old diaries interesting artifacts and more, this quick stop will give you a tiny glimpse into the past. I even found my surname up on the list of the 400 traditionally considered "Chatham Families", who would've thought?! Walking into this museum, expect to be a bit bombarded by locals wanting to tell you all about Chatham county, it's Southern hospitality at it's finest and they're proud to tell you something you didn't know. This court house has a lot of history, from fires to the museum installation and uses today. It's free to enter, so why not get a little history lesson when you're in town?!
