This is a blast to the past. Very cool old building interior. Stopped by for a lunch in middle of week and found plenty of seating. Sat down and was greeted immediately ordering a water and sweet tea. Loved looking thru menu with so many good choices. We were going out for a big dinner later so this was suppose to be a small lunch. My wife ordered a cup of soup. I ordered a bowl of brunswick soup and a grilled pimento cheese sandwich. I could not finish the soup as the bowl was large and amount of meat in it was abundit. My grilled cheese was wonderful, I love pimento cheese. Unfortunately we could not try any of the soda or ice cream products this trip. The service is great and friendly. Restrooms are restored old school design. Will return to try other menu items and some Soda Shoppe product. read more

Enjoyed a really nice dinner here last night with a beyond incredible staff that went above and beyond to check in on us frequently (server and owner or manager- not sure which) and make sure we had everything we needed and were very happy. I was blown away by how attentive and friendly they were despite being super busy. For the environment, the place felt a bit loud and crowded - which for one was a testament to how well liked it appeared to be (we are visiting from out of state) and how they had to make very creative use of the space as they must cater to so many in a smaller space. It was also clean and quite nostalgic with lots of interesting old time memorabilia - and didn't try to go too cheesy and over the top with the theme though again was a bit too busy and crowded and could have maybe used a more highlighted 'less is more' approach to showcase the ice cream shoppe feel, the old time candy shop ambience, etc. I also loved that there were no tvs to distract from the ppl in front of us, and though time period music would be fun, it might have made it even too much louder. I appreciated very much that they seemed to want ppl to talk and enjoy the company in front of them. The fried pickles app was really good, and the dreamsicle style shake and curly fries - sooo delicious! The ice cream concoctions we didn't try, but saw delivered all around us were huge and fun and looked so good! The BLT was a bit dry and could have used a good mayo or sauce, and my sister's Hawaiian chicken didn't have the Hawaiian bun but it was unique and still not bad. Though with the soda shoppe name I had hoped for more unique or home made soda concoctions or offerings. Overall though- the food was mostly really really good; it seemed cute and beloved and very popular with the town; and there was a clear pride in the place - and very apparent love and appreciation of the customers by the staff which was number one in what I saw and was very impressed by. After walking around downtown Pittsboro and going into shops, we went into S & T for some ice cream. Very good Banana pudding ice cream. They were very busy and loud with a long line waiting to pay but it moved efficiently. I saw a Ratskeller t shirt and recalled the famous "The Rat" in Chapel Hill. A man was eating a steak on a skillet "Rat style." I later saw on the menu it is a Steve's Gambler, a skirt steak with fries. I'd like to go back. read more

We came in on a Saturday with 5 people and they were busy. There was a bit of confusion over where we were to be sat and who was to wait on us, so the owner took over real quick and not only sat us but also waited on us. She was super friendly and patient and I wouldn't have asked for anyone else to wait on us! The decor is super cute! It's set up as a soda shoppe downstairs and the upstairs has a bar area and used to be a lawyer's office. The food was great! The menu consisted of sandwiches, burgers, salads, and plenty of other choices for the whole family! The desserts were amazing - both in appearance and in taste! We will definitely be back!!! Nostalgia is abundant, and their food is sensational! Pittsboro, North Carolina is a mystical southern community with its courthouse in the center of town, surrounded by quaint retail stores and a smorgasbord of restaurants with outdoor seating in fair weather. Just north of the courthouse sits a reborn early 20th century drug store that has been reborn under the eyes of Vicky and the late Gene Oldham. It is the S & T Soda Shoppe, named for their sons: Steve and TJ, who operate it much as their father wished. I knew Gene, and we shared a deep interest in nostalgic items from the first half of the twentieth century. His hobby was collecting those items from near and far that found their place in the Soda Shoppe . . . well, except for the many old Coca-Cola coolers and vending machines that he once stored and repaired in the building next door. We pass through Pittsboro to appointments in Chapel Hill or Durham, better known as UNC and Duke. Steve was a diehard Tar Heel fan, and I'm a diehard Duke fan. Despite our different allegiances, we spoke the same languages and possessed the same interests. The interior of the Shoppe is filled with Nostalgic items that will capture your eyes. Steve had an interesting story behind each! Is ice cream your fancy? They only know how many different flavors are in their freezers, and your imagination (or their's - definitely trust their's) will determine your delicious reward. We stopped by on March 6, 2026 at lunch, and waited briefly for a seat. They were packed! We dined in a well decorated back room and ordered a simple lunch. My wife had her favorite Mebane cheese burger with fries, and I had my favorite hot dog with mustard, chili, and onions and the house fried potato chips. The service was quick and the food was delicious! It seems like yesterday when we adopted our granddaughter as our own. She and I would have "Daddy-Daughter Days" one Saturday a month where we traveled to interesting places within two hours of our home of Laurinburg. She began choosing to visit Chapel Hill and Durham, likely because of the stops at S&T. TJ Made the best limeade I've ever had & I'm a connoisseur! Good sandwich & Emily was kind enough to bring me a pickle spear too! They were actually closed, I hadn't realized but they fixed me up! They have egg creams authentically NY. It's an old pharmacy & soda counter in downtown pittsboro & very cute! All the servers are smiling & the place has great energy & I love the original tin ceiling has been saved. A fun place to bring a family & or a date. I've had many dishes there over the years and they're all good. But tonight I had the Single Steve's Gambler, you can get a single double or triple. It's a 7 ounce skirt steak served sizzling on a skillet with grilled onions, bread and steak fries. It's based on the dish that used to be served at the Rathskeller in Chapel Hill. Perfectly cooked and delicious. It's definitely worth going off my diet once in a while. You should come try this place out. read more

Okay I 1,000% recommend this place. I mean who doesn't need a good old-fashioned soda shop that still makes egg creams and root beer floats and limeaides? Aside from that all of their food is cooked fresh. My pictures don't do it justice but I ordered a Philly cheesesteak and honestly it's one of the best I've ever had. The meat was super tender with onions and peppers and the cheese was mixed thoroughly through the meat so that you got the gooey saltiness of the provolone in every bite. Onion rings were fantastic. They have a pretty extensive menu mostly burgers dogs cooked many different ways they have some chicken sandwiches they have a full array of Blue Bell ice cream and they have a few menu items that are from the old ratskeller restaurant that was in chapel Hill, i.e. The infamous bowl of cheese lasagna. There's a lot of history to this building and the original aspect of the store. It used to be a pharmacy / soda shop and throughout the years has been many different things but Vicky the current owner and her husband who passed away a few years ago took it over 20 some years ago and I can tell you if you don't get there early for lunch you're probably not getting in. Again atmosphere was amazing food was very delicious and we will definitely be back. It's only about an hour drive from Greensboro and well worth a day trip. read more

What a cute spot in Pittsboro! Came here after a hike on the way back to the triangle and it was so busy! Thankfully there was no wait though because I was hungry. It has a very diner like feel with the set up of an old school pharmacy with the soda fountains. I love pimento cheese so I decided to get the pimento cheeseburger and oh boy it was delicious! The burger was juicy and came with plenty of options to add for topping. The side it comes with are potato chips but you can upgrade them, which I did to sweet potato fries. I don't know why but the sweet potato fries were so incredible maybe the best I've had. Very crispy but fresh. S&T is also known for their ice cream. They have SO many flavors! Don't let the "scoops" servings deceive you, because the portions are humongous. My friend and I shared "1 scoop" and it was more like 4-5, we could barely finish it! The milkshakes also looked delicious and are served in the old style glasses. I know this place is famous for their banana splits but you may need 4+ people to help tackle those. The diner has two floors but we asked to stay on the first level as I wasn't sure if there was all the nostalgic decor upstairs. I love that the building was restored to how it would have looked in the 40s with the mahogany wood; tin ceiling; marble counter; bar stools and tile floor. The details are stunning. The place is busy and has a large food menu as well as ice cream menu. The menu has a lot of sandwiches to select from. I went with the tuna melt on sunflower bread with provolone cheese. The sandwich came with chips but I went with steak fries instead. The sandwich was good but I think I'd go with something else next time after looking at what others were ordering. We stopped in for lunch after petting the Alpacas at Carolina Sunshine. The cool, relatively dark interior was a welcome change on a sunny warm day. The vintage decor gave us a lot to look at and talk about, and the oldies music almost got us singing a few times. Our party had an assortment of burgers and sandwiches, all of which got rave reviews. The Hot Chips were an extra special treat that leave even the best grocery store chips in the dust. The young guy who waited on us didn't seem to be really listening to us, and it took forever to get our food. He was also misinformed about some things on the menu (told us things that didn't turn out to be true). The menu is heavy on sandwiches, fried foods and Mayo-heavy stuff. This is not a problem, but just something to note. I got a salad with chicken tenders on top. The tenders were heavily breaded and tasted like they could have come from frozen. Just nothing special. I also got a cherry fizz drink, since I felt like I should experience a soda, since I was in a soda shop. It was fine, just tasted like grenadine in bubbly water, nothing special. They also had egg creams on the menu, which is cool except for the fact that they contained ice cream, which is not typically the recipe for egg creams. The bathrooms are surprisingly small, considering how huge this place is, so if it's busy you will have to wait. You pay at the counter, which is weird and takes forever because the place is so crowded. Won't be back. read more

This soda shop is adorable and very busy on a weekend night. There are two floors to this place. So, don't feel overwhelmed if you find the place to be packed once you open the door. Their menu is a typical burgers and finger foods. The server was so kind and helpful. My friends and I came initially for ice cream, but we ended up having a full meal. I got the corn dog nuggets, fried pickled, and one scoop of black cherry ice cream. I spent around $11 plus tip. I took a star off, because we felt mislead with how the menu was explained. I asked twice and I got the same answer. I ordered the corn dog nuggets first, and the server asked "what side?" I replied with "does it come with a slide?" and the reply was "yes." I ordered the fried pickles. I was stuffed and didn't need the slide, since my intention was to eat the corn dog nuggets only since our intention of coming to this place was for its ice cream. (The fried pickles are very salty. Tasty, but you can't finish the entire side because of the amount of salt.) At the end, we were charged a la carte for each item. So, I ordered another item unintentionally. I hope they explain their menus better, but this one time of misunderstanding doesn't take away from the entire experience of the place. read more

It was so hot on Saturday we wanted some cold treats to cool off and this was just the place! Seems everyone had the same idea cos it was packed, but the wait staff kept their cool. My spouse had the Dreamsicle shake which is a blend of vanilla ice cream and orange sherbet. She said it was absolutely refreshing! I had the Cola Sundae which was pure Pepsi syrup over vanilla ice cream with whipped cream on it. OMG, if you love Pepsi, try it! The couple next to us had dinner consisting of lasagna and the Gambler (a strip steak with grilled onions, fries & toasted bread), both recipes from the Old Rathskeller in Chapel Hill and nearly made me drool! My wife and I were looking for a new and neat place to go, so we tried the S & T Soda Shop. It was fantastic. It looks, feels, and sounds like a place from the 50's or early 60's. The thing that impressed me the most was the customer service. The waitresses were happy, smiling, and very friendly. The owner even came over and talked with us. She told us the history of the place. There are many things to choose from on the menu: from hot dogs and hamburgers to lasagna to fajitas to ice cream. We kept it simple with hot chips and burgers followed by some ice cream. We fell in love with this place. It was well worth the trip, and we will go back. read more

My second visit to this cute spot and it was just as good as the first time. We got a burger with fries, a gambler steak and the famous banana split. OH MY! We decided to not eat many fries so we could dig into the split, but we still only ate about half of it! A nice lady suggested we take it home in a cup and make a milkshake out of it, so we took her advise. The split comes with tons of ice cream, fruit, cherries, whip cream and sprinkles. Oh, yes, there was a banana too under all that goodness... Very good and a lot of fun, not your typical banana split at all. When I was in last time I saw someone get the gambler and decided I would get it next time. It was worth the long drive for sure. Cooked just right, full of flavor, lots of cooked onions...so tender...Oh my...really different, really good. It's pricey for me, but I am still glad I got it. We recently moved to the area and have been trying out all the local spots. We knew we needed to try S&T based one the reviews.... which may be misleading... We've been here twice now. Both times there was a decent wait, and really no area to wait, and no clear direction to who was first or next. No one taking names, or numbers of guests. It seems a little disorganized. With that being said, every employee you interact with, including the person who eventually seats you, are all super kind and friendly! Very old time soda shoppe vibe, cool old milk shake blenders on the walls. Felt like you were stepping into the 50s. The seating is tight. This last time, we learned that there may be seating upstairs as well, and there is an additional room on the first floor that you wouldn't know was there unless you were seated back there or go to use the rest room. There are a few sections where the tables are in a line, and you will be sitting right next to another party, with their table attached to yours, which is where we sat the first time we visited. Then there are two or three tables right in front of the ice cream display and names. This is where we were the second visit.... It was more uncomfortable than sitting next to other guests. People, understandably so, want to come up to the ice cream display and see the different kinds, and names. This means that someone may come up right behind you, even leaning over you, to see the different ice creams. The first time we visited we both got cheese burgers, one with regular fries, and sweet potato fries for the other. Burgers were what we expected to have in a small town restaurant. The fires, both kinds were great. Unfortunately, our second visit was not good. My husband got a burger, and I asked the waitress her favorite thing and she said the Cheesesteak, and I ordered that. I don't know what they used to season the Cheesesteak, but I could not get the taste of the flavoring out of my mouth for what honestly seemed like two or three days. It had a fake odd flavor that I cannot explain. I thought I was maybe being dramatic, and didn't mention it to my husband. When my husband took a bite of mine and instantly made a face, and asked how I had ate half of it... While everyone who works there is very friendly, they seem either understaffed, or not attentive... The first visit we were next to two people on what seemed to be their first date, and they both loudly had commented how long it had been since they ordered, and when they did receive their food, the order was wrong. The second time we visited, after ordering, we didn't see our waitress again for refills until our food was delivered, then we didn't see her again. I couldn't had even inquired about the questionable cheesesteak if I wanted to. In hindsight, I should have said something when we walked up to pay, but I really dislike confrontation. After trying it twice, I do not think we will be going back. read more
