I'm not at all handy. Well, scratch that. I'm not handy by nature. If/when I have to be, I can…read morefigure things out. Since buying a place, I have often surprised myself what some grit, time and the internet can accomplish. That said, when I don't have to do something, I don't. I know. I blame modern society robbing the modern man of the desire to do much besides call a licensed professional and enjoy a cold beverage while said professional gets the problem fixed. So it came to pass that I *needed* to wash my car. The automated car wash by me had devolved into a money-grabbing hot mess so they were out of contention. I had resigned myself to *choke* wash the car myself. Now, back in the day (like, way back), I used to love to wash the cars with my dad. We would get a bucket of sudsy water, big sponges, towels, wax, and tire shine and get to work. This was a long time ago but I was fairly certain i had the muscle memory to get my car into tip-top shape. I headed over to the local hardware store to buy some air filters and car wash paraphernalia when said hardware store was out of the filters I needed. This hadn't happened before so I, begrudgingly, made my way to the big box hardware store up the road. On the way there, I saw it: Inglewood Autowash. I suppose I'd passed it many times before but I never paid attention to it before. But there it was: a bastion of car radios, kids splashing about and grown-ups washing their own vehicles. It was a sign. *I* was going to wash my own car. But I was woefully unprepared. I pulled up into a stall... and looked around. Thankfully everyone was in their respective zones else I would have been really embarrassed. Since I am trying to pay it forward, let me give you the skinny. 1.) There are directions in every stall. The directions give you the prospective order of the wash and how to best utilize your time. 2.) The wash only takes cash and that cash comes in the form of quarters. Since I relish in being a Luddite, I always have change on me. If you're not a prepared scout, you'll want to know before you go. 3.) It's a $1 for 3 minutes. I would say a safe bet is $5 which is still much much less than you'll pay at an automated wash. When you insert the quarters, you turn the dial to the setting you want. As long as there's money in the slot, go crazy with turning the dial. Just go in order from the guide on the wall. Got it? Good. Well, there's something else you should know. When that hose turns on, you will feel ALIVE. There's so much power coming out of that thing, you'll need to use both hands. I was a bit stunned when I started, so my head wasn't fully in the game. But once I realized that I had the power of pre-wash, super soapy soap, rinse, and wax in the ball of my fist, I felt like a super hero. This isn't the relaxed car wash in the driveway (although it could be). This was the Sarah-Connor-in-T2-jacked-with-rifles-and-ready-to-rumble version. I was spraying. I was washing. I was waxing. I was... breathing heavy? I really need to get out more. Like I said, I wasn't as prepared as I should have been. I should have had more change on me. I should have come with rags. But for an impromptu car wash that required some muscle, my car looked pretty decent. I know better for next time and I had the satisfaction of doing it myself. In these modern times, it's the little things...
