Here, they provide an option of having a photo taken of eyes instead of dilation (at an extra cost). This was a welcomed alternative and saved us all a lot of time and tears, too. As someone who has never worn glasses, Dr. Best explained to me what she was doing and why, and answered any questions I had without a lot of medical jargon that would make me scratch my head in confusion. After the eye photos, she even had my son come over to look at the pics and ask her questions. He thought that was super cool. He (shockingly) told me as we left, "That was pretty fun, Mommy!" Whatttt?! We were seen very quickly and the appointment only lasted about 30 minutes, including picking out and purchasing new frames. Speaking of, there was a pretty big selection of youth frames, which was refreshing. They were all fairly affordable (most under $150) and ended up being fully covered by our insurance. So, I don't think I'll be visiting him any time soon. Since moving here to East Tennessee ten years ago, I've had two eye doctors but neither really did it for me. I was without insurance for two years, and so when I got new insurance, I began my search. I wanted an established practice with a great reputation that was nearby. My search included Hardin Valley Eye Care and because it was nearest to my house, I made an appointment. The minute I walked into the office, I was encouraged. COVID protocols are still being practiced - 1st star; reception and staff were super friendly - 2nd star; I was seen at my appointment time instead of waiting around like other offices - 3rd star; When I met Dr. Travis Thompson, the deal was sealed - 4th star; and they have a large selection of frames - 5th star. I could go on with more stars, but they've already secured my business for years to come. I picked up my glasses today and I haven't seen with such clarity since my eye doctor in California. I've never encountered such arrogance from a healthcare provider's office staff, especially when dealing with a potential new patient. While I've since learned my insurance is accepted, the experience was so off-putting that I will not be seeking care there. My issue is with the optician who assisted me with my glasses. After I picked out my new frames, I mentioned that my old ones kept falling down my nose, and she offered to adjust them. When she handed them back, I was having trouble seeing out of them, but I thought the lenses were smudged, and since it was getting late, and my mother was driving, I figured I'd clean them when I got home. When I arrived at my house, I got a lens wipe and attempted to clean them, but I still couldn't see, so I held my glasses up to the light and I saw that the tops of the lenses looked like they'd been fractured, and there were wavy lines on the center section of the lenses. I also noticed some small gouges on the top left side of the frame. The office was already closed, so I couldn't go back that day, or leave a message, so I thought I would go the next morning. I survived a massive brain tumor, and one of the side effects is that I'm very prone to migraines. The visual disturbance caused by my damaged lenses caused a severe migraine the next morning, so my mother offered to take my glasses in for me. When she took them in, the optician denied that she'd done anything wrong. My mother asked her if she could explain why I could see perfectly well through the lenses before she adjusted my glasses, and couldn't after she did. She insisted that she hadn't done anything wrong. When my mother asked her if one of the same-day labs could make my lenses for me, she said that she didn't think so because of my prescription. She didn't offer the slightest bit of assistance, and when my mother told her about my migraines, and that I couldn't write, which is what I do, I couldn't read, and I wouldn't be able to drive, her response was, "I don't know what to tell you." My mother asked her to call and rush the order, which she did not do, since I picked up the glasses seven business days later. My mother left Miller Eye Care and went to one of the same-day optical stores. The associate there took one look at my glasses and said, "She didn't pop the lenses out before she adjusted the frames, and the heat caused the coating on the glasses to ripple," and when my mother asked her if they could make lenses for my old frames, she said, "They'll be ready by two." If my mother had listened to that optician at Miller Eye care, I'd have spent nine days in bed, in the dark trying to avoid debilitating migraines while waiting for my new glasses to arrive. What's worse, when I went in to pick up my new glasses and they didn't fit correctly, she said she would adjust them, but I told her I would take them elsewhere to have them adjusted because she damaged my lenses, and she said in a sing-song voice, "I did not!" I said, "You exposed the lenses to heat and it rippled the coating!" and she sang "If you say so!" As much as I trust Dr. Miller, his optician refuses to take responsibility for her actions, so I won't be back, and when I told her so, she sang "Okay!" and wished me a Merry Christmas when as I walked out the door. If the optician had admitted that she made a mistake, if she had tried at all to help, I wouldn't have been as angry, even though it cost me to have new lenses made for my old frames, but because of her ineptitude and rudeness, Dr. Miller lost TWO of his long-time patients, because my mother will not be returning, either. All actions have consequences, and I sincerely hope she learns that lesson before she causes any more damage to Dr. Miller's practice.

Went for an appointment yesterday to get a contact lens and glasses prescription since it was 2+ years from my last and I needed a new prescription to order more contacts. Called before my appointment to ask what my copayment amount would be and was told $15. Had my appointment (which was 30 mins late even though there was no one else there), and it went fine, Dr. Crump was nice but not exactly personable. After he diagnosed my prescription, he sat me down with Melissa at the front desk to get me a quote on contacts. She instead got me a quote on glasses and contacts and kept pushing me towards using my allotted insurance coverage towards glasses. I have glasses and my prescription barely changed for them so I didn't want to get new ones. I primarily wear contacts anyway, and my prescription for contacts was the same as it had been for the past 7 years I've been wearing them. When I told her I don't want to buy anything today, just wanted a prescription and quote, her entire tone changed and she became quite condescending very quickly. She then proceeded to tell me that I have a $60 copayment for a contact lens evaluation. I wasn't prepared for that and was shocked, because I literally called ahead of time to know exactly how much I needed. When I told her that, she said they probably hadn't run my insurance yet, which is HILARIOUS because the person I spoke on the phone (Her name may have been Lisa but I'm not 100% sure) with had to hang up with me, call VSP, and then call me back to tell me the correct copayment. Anyway, had to have my dad come by and pay it (we also decided to buy a 24pk of lenses bc I really needed them and they said the insurance covered it all but $20). We went home and I reviewed the invoice they gave me and was shocked to see that they charged me $60 for a contact lens FITTING. I've only ever had 1 fitting, which was when I was 14 and they have you try on the contacts and learn how to take care of them and such. I had no such thing done at this place. The doctor asked what contacts I wear, I said Acuvue Oasys and he said Ok. There was no putting contacts in my eyes or anything. So, we called VSP, who was shocked that we were charged so incorrectly. Not only for the "fitting" but also for paying $20 for lenses because I apparently had $80 more dollars of coverage towards contact lenses. My insurance representative also told me that they had sent an authorization over with detailed coverage information prior to my appointment, so there was no reason I should've been charged incorrectly. She called them but they didn't answer so she left a detailed message explaining the coverage and left a number for them to call us back. Shocker, no call. So my dad and I just went over and walked in today with our invoice and receipt. We go up to the desk, explain the situation to Melissa and Lisa (I think was her name), and Melissa rolls her eyes and says that you'll have to wait for Karen to get here, she can explain it to you better than we can. Karen walked in a few minutes later. I caught Karen in a couple lies that put this practice in quite a bad light. We start to explain the situation and bring up the fitting and how I've only ever had 1 fitting back when I first got contacts. She starts to say that well technically when you put contacts in your eyes it counts as a fitting. I NEVER PUT CONTACTS IN MY EYES HERE. there was not even an offer to try them on. Again same exact prescription I've had for years, so why would I need to have a fitting?? I told her that I did not try contacts on and to go ask the doctor if you don't believe me. She stuttered and said well you got a prescription. She next said "I don't know what to tell you, we charge all VSP users for a fitting anytime they get contacts." My insurance company told me there is no reason to get a fitting everytime you get a contact prescription, and that they will be investigating this office to find out if they are fraudulently charging both patients and VSP themselves. Karen proceeded to tell us that Melissa did charge us incorrectly for contacts and that I should not have had to pay anything for contacts because they were fully covered, and that all they could do was refund us the $20 we payed for contacts and charge it to my insurance instead. Overall will not be coming here again. Me and my entire family of 5 will be looking for a new optometrist, and have filed a grievance with VSP.
