#93 Great local flavor. Dark and super divey--even for ATL standards. Food is so-so, but it is just what I want and expect from bar food. Drinks are strong and cheap. Music is awesome. Crowd is hype. Parking, not so great--be inventive, use Publix. Darts and pool. Since I have been in town I have tried to play darts at a couple local bars. I am not that good... yet. But watch out, because game on. Saw tons of TV's and I am thinking this could be a great spot to watch the playoffs--I will let you know on my next visit. Slow service for food, but who goes to a dive bar for amazing speed of service? You go to a dive bar for cheap drinks, an eclectic crowd and fun times. Smith's Olde Bar has all that--plus some really cool bartenders. "500 Songs for Kids" was a stellar charity event hosted by Smith's Olde Bar. The event was to support children's hospitals. Back in the Bay Area I always tried to hit up every local charity event for either kids fund raisers, breast cancer awareness or Alzheimer's research. It was good to hear about this event from a few people I met at another local spot last week as I am new in the community and want to get involved. This was a great way to find a new hangout, meet some people and stay active. One of the bands playing was a local cover band the Spins that I saw last Friday night. I never knew it, but SOB is the place for me. It's essentially a smoky bar with an equally smoky kitchen....if they have it, they will fry it. They have a reasonably priced grocery store selection of beer on tap and a decent variety in the bottle. The menu is typical bar food. I only had the vegan black bean burger. It was aight; it just tasted a little like it was flash fried...crispy.....crunchy....like everything else. SOB is not the kind a joint I expected to find across the street from Ansley Mall. I originally went to uncover the mystery of a hard core Steelers bar that is located next door to Cow Tippers in the gentile Ansley Neighborhood. Well, no mystery here; just like their food, SOB's crowd is a cadre of crispy, crunchy kind of folk. I've only been on Football Sundays and the crowd is a veritable sea of Black & Gold....just the way I like it. There are many, many, many screens and they are all tuned to the Steelers' game on Sundays (except one in the corner near the kitchen that shows the Falcons game). The volume is up on the game, much like the crowd. The Steeler Fans at SOB are rowdy....but not crazy. If you are going for the Steelers game, I suggest you get there early or call to reserve a table. While the place is sizeable (4 large rooms), most of the seating is typically reserved for diehard fans and regular customers. They even have a seat reserved for a Steelers Fan that died on his way to a game. It's kind of a memorial draped in Steelers paraphernalia. My first time here, I mistakenly sat in the seat of honor. I gladly moved after being informed by the manager; and for my troubles, he offered to comp my drinks. SOB is primarly a music spot with a live music just about every day of the week and two stage areas. Both areas are available for private parties. If I could give this horrid place negative stars I would. PLEASE AVOID THIS BAR AT ALL COSTS. The three disgusting security guards at the door took my real id and refused to give it back claiming it was fake!! My girlfriend was also thoroughly frisked to the point of sexual harassment. They also told me that to get my id back I would have to call the cops and this was after they bent the card in half to which point it basically snapped. The worst experience I've had in a restaurant. Our party could have been hemorrhaging to death and she wouldn't have paid us any more attention. The beer on draft was stale and the lighting was something out of a Saw movie. We had to use our phones to see the menu. We paid $8 a piece to see a band play. You know, live music? I'm currently sitting in the midst of the Iron Bowl, a spectacular football contest between the University of Alabama and consummate rivals, Auburn University. When I tell you this place out of control, I'm talking call the Fire Marshall, the National Guard and the Ghostbusters. I just watched a man rally an entire party of strangers into a riotous frenzy! A woman in white pants is thrusting her crotch into another woman's face. The victim's over-attentive man grimaced at the display. With every touchdown, the madness deepens. Gnashing teeth, howling chants, very anthropological. The servers held it down through the horrible scene - Men foaming and bellowing, cawing and braying. Drinks came out and the servers were never salty even though it would have been understandable given the bonkers workload. These 4 stars are for y'all. When I'm in the mood for smoky, dark and divey, this is my favorite spot. Not a hole-in-the-wall due to its size and the music upstairs, but still in my mind a place of that genre. As other folks have noted, there are plenty of pool tables and other game-type entertainment, and the food is actually good! I like it best, though, for grabbing a booth and hanging out with a great friend or a boy I'm really into...no one will care if you take up the space for a long time to talk, or start making out! Cabbing there can be a best bet, as parking is a challenge, but despite some complaints over beer prices, the service (bar or table) is generally good, and when you're in the mood for this kind of atmosphere . . . Literally just got assaulted by one of the bouncers as my girlfriend and i were simply walking out of the bar. Insane. Will never go to the bar again. Been going there for 15 years "yes they allow minors" and neverrrrr had anything like this happen. Got dragged out while trying to leave. Smith's is my boyfriends favorite place to go, I absolutely enjoy coming here with him! It's definitely more of a hipster dive bar, but it's a super casual feel and a great place for a weeknight drink or a weekend night bender. They have really good food (the Fox Bros wings are SO good!) and the drinks are well priced. They have great bucket specials, especially on Blue Moon, and they typically have the "beer girls" visiting on the weekends. We've gotten lots of free drinks out of that. The bartenders are super nice as well. Awesome place to come hang out with friends, lots of games. Pool tables, darts, and some great arcade games (we've definitely put some dollars in that punching machine once or twice). They used to do bottomless mimosas on Sunday's, I don't think they do this anymore though Also a fun place to come during football season (although I avoid it since it's an Alabama bar and I'm an Auburn grad!!) Went to see Sweetie's friend play here. It's bigger than I expected, but was packed on a Saturday night, due to several bands and the Alabama game. Out front is a big bar/dining area, which we just walked through. Looked nice though, and there were booths and plenty of TVs. There are several music areas; we were in a small one downstairs. You pay to get into it, at least for some bands. It wasn't very big, and it was packed. Sweetie sat on a small table while I balanced it. The acoustics were great, and the staff was nice. All in all, a decent venue, and seemed to be a good bar. Didn't get a chance to have any food or drinks. No parking; we parked in the mall lot around the corner. read more

Had a great time at the secret comedy show on Saturday night, unfortunately, the night didn't end so well. After the comedy show (2:30AM) I ordered drinks for my friends and myself. 1. There was NO last call, only a "if you aren't closing a tab, get the f out of the bar." While people who (maybe) worked there were yelling at people to get out of the bar, my friends and I felt uncomfortable and put our drinks down to leave. We had ordered our drinks maybe 15 minutes before. When I was walking out, I said to the guy holding the door open yelling at us, "it seems like we're the only people you're kicking out." He replied "Maybe you're the only people who shouldn't be here." Wow. Nice. Thank you, KC Royals guy. While we were waiting outside for our ride, another employee said to us "maybe if you had listened to get out, we wouldn't have had to yell." Let me break this down for you, there were still 20+ people in the bar, who worked there according to her. "We all want to go home." Alright, that's fair, close the bar to your friends too, then. Or, if you all really do work there, clean up and go home. Letting someone order drinks and then kicking them out without giving them time or notice to finish them (other than barking to get the f out) is pretty crappy. If the 20 people remaining in the bar do actually work there, this business has some serious re-evaluating to do. Great service, great atmosphere! Yes, it's a dive bar but I wouldn't have it any other way. I've been coming here for years and it's never let me down. Sometimes there's s DJ on the main floor, other times the bands are up stairs with a cover charge. Haven't tried the food yet, not a bar food kinda girl. My friends say the food is decent. The drinks are cheap and everyone is friendly, what else could you ask for? Last time I was here, it was the pre game starting point for my friends and I before we took an uber to the next bar. As a venue, this place is stellar. I was here on a Wednesday night for a bluegrass show, and it was packed. Had a great spot right up in front. Sound was pretty decent.. Sometimes tough to hear vocals, but a lot of that had to do with where I was standing. As for the bar portion, they were out of some beers, and they ran out of the $4 special halfway thru the night. The bartender didn't have a late night menu fir us upstairs. When we tried to eat and drink downstairs afterwords, we sat and waited at a booth for a waitress for 15 min before I finally went to the bar for a menu. The food was delicious bar food, but it again took us forever to find our waitress, for us to get a check, etc. Chalk it up to a Wednesday with more people than they expected? Maybe... I went for a concert. The stairs to go up to the venue are steep. Thankfully there was a bathroom upstairs. The stalls were so tight that it was hard to move around inside the stall though. This place is not the most disability friendly. So we get up there and discover that in order to get food you have to go back downstairs and order it as a to go order. So my husband goes down and places the order. Thinking this should not take long he stayed down there. He ended up just coming up toward the end of the first set because the food was still not done. He had missed almost the entire first set waiting for the food. He goes down after the first set is done and it's finally ready. I would say our food took about 45 minutes. It was nice and hot when he brought it up to me. So I feel that the box is pretty light. I am like oh wow not a good sign. I ordered a Philly cheese steak sandwich. I am not expecting it to be Tony Luke's quality but at $10 and change I am hoping for something decent. Yeah I was so disappointed after that huge wait. It's about the size of a 6 inch sub elsewhere. It did not come with anything but the sandwich. There was a lot of meat and that is the only thing positive I could say for this. For that much you think oh it will come with a bit of fries or something too. Nope just the sandwich. Not even a great sandwich at that. My husband was like it's overpriced bar food. I was like yeah and bars love to dump ten tons of French fries on your plate typically. This was not a $10 sandwich. When someone comes into a place like Smith's for a concert, they should be prepared to shine. They should take it as a chance to make me want to come back just to eat and hang out. They did not achieve that. The nicest thing I could say is the upstairs staff in the venue area were nice. The acoustics were decent. The area was clean. The music acts were AMAZING! This is my first one star review (I'm new to "Yelping" but still) I'm writing this because today is Thursday and my wife and I used to LOVE going here on Thursday for trivia, but sadly, we will never be back all due to one employee. About a month or so ago we decided to stay after trivia was over and hang out at the bar. The tatted hipster girl behind the bar seemed too drunk to bother serving anyone except for some regulars (I'm assuming) on the opposite end of the bar from us. After FINALLY getting her attention, we had to repeat our orders at least three times, it was almost like she was so drunk she was staring right through us!!! After she takes another shot for herself, she brings us our drinks along with our check (roughly $16) , I give her a $20 bill and she puts my change directly in her tip jar! Thank you hipster girl for deciding where my money goes! SMH.... we had usually had great experiences but this one was too much to look past... it's a shame since we live so close. Been to Smiths several times to see my son play . The Atlanta room scheduling makes no sense & seems disorganized ..but that's beside the fact there are no chairs in there to sit on. Why??? Just a few against the wall here or there. One time the guy that checks people in was really aggressive to the point saying you have to pay right then & there ...ok no.. problem ... I was Just looking for someone.... Upstairs seems to be better organized somewhat & there is a bartender when you can get him. As far as the food.... NO way would I eat there. This has become a new place to hang for me and my friends. If you want a chill night, come here and you can get good beers and lots of entertainment ranging from a Foosball table, 4 billiards table, and 2 dart boards. The crowd isn't your typical buckhead/midtown crowd so it's good for some people, others not so much. It's more DIVEY than anything. There is also a bar/dance area although no one really come to here to dance, at least not that I've noticed. Tip, very LIMITED parking here (like 4 spots) and don't try to park at Cowtipper, they'll tow your car. Smith's was one of my favorite places to have a few drinks and a bite to eat before I moved away. Back in Atlanta and back in the swing of things, Smith's is my go to dive bar. Live music, comedy shows, and the food had improved a lot! I'll not forget to mention the pool tables and games of that's your ish. I usually check the website to see which bands are playing upstairs. If I'm not familiar with the band and type of music then I'll look the band up. I've seen a few shows I really enjoyed! Terrible service. Waited 15 minutes just for someone to take an order. Waited another 10-15 minutes for the drinks to be brought. Waitress rolled her eyes twice when we ordered. When the drinks and food was brought, she just dropped them on the table and walked away. Took 10/minutes to bring the bill, she kept stopping at a table to chat and obviously not working. Tried to keep the change from thw bill, didnt even bring it back to the table. Had to go to the bar and personally ask her for my change back..... This was 20 minutes after we gave her the money. Spacious and dark with a real sense of some local musical history but best of all it's not in a strip mall! (breathes a deep sigh of relief!) Smith's has been growing on me lately and a big part of that is the people. It's very easy to drum up a conversation with interesting people here, and there is no greater joy to me then good conversation. If it weren't for the bathrooms and the jukebox we'd have a solid five star review, but I can only take so much of Steely Dan and sour toilet wafts, so there we are! I sang here & loved the intimate venue. The backstage was really cool because it was full of stickers from all the bands. The venue does a great job with the lighting on stage & the vocal sound. They also offer VIP tables where you can sit. As for the food, it was great. I ordered the Veggie Burger & it had really great flavor/texture. I'm definitely a fan of Smith's. Why? -Non-smoking. Holler. -In the Atlanta Room, you can have food brought to you while you enjoy the show. Well stop me if you've heard this one before, but if you ask me, I could've sworn I'd already written a review of Smith's Olde Bar. Is it really so strange? One more review: What difference does it make? Panic not, yelpers, for this big mouth strikes again. I never went to Smith's much; the parking was always kind of a pain; parking at Ansley Mall always left this boy with a thorn in his side. But my opinions of Smith's tend to oscillate wildly. Sure, parking sucks, but other times they'd host one-of-a-kind shows in a small venue worthy of much larger stages and golden lights. Dirty, kinda grungy, Smith's would fit me like a hand in glove at times. Besides, it was Smith's that introduced me to Fox Brother's BBQ. Meat is murder, but it sure is tasty. Unfortunately, this charming man, this handsome devil has gotten old and married and settled into his 9 to 5. Money changes everything you know, and heaven knows I'm miserable now.* But on those rare occasions I can go out to watch live music, I can head back to the old house and listen to tunes played louder than bombs. Four stars to Smith's Olde bar. *Note to my wife. I am NOT miserable. That phrase is artistic license made merely to fit the rest of the review. The important thing to remember about the name of this place is that it's old. Don't be surprised when you come upstairs and the bathrooms lack ventilation and the carpet is really worn out and sticky. That happens when places are old and I'm okay with that as long as there are a few other things going in their favor. The staff here is professional and very friendly. Some of the cover charges seen excessive, especially since we're in a recession ($15 to see a few local bands play). Drinks are easy to get and the bartenders all pour very well. Prices are okay ($6.75 for Kettle One drinks) and they even have a cheap drink menu with $4 PBR. It's a very unique place and a fun place to see live bands perform. If that's not your thing you can stay downstairs and eat dinner or play pool or darts. The choices are endless. I most love that the music/concert areas are smoke free. WOO HOO! read more

An identity crisis in a good way. On a given night, you might find the following: pool sharks so hardcore they are playing alone to hone their skillz, football jersey clad fans intently watching the TV in the corner, and hipsters with 23 inch waists (and I'm talking dudes) wearing jeans that look like leggings - all in this one bar. I've been before but just for games (this does lean to being an Alabama bar after all) but just went to the Atlanta room to see a show. This is a very, very intimate venue. So intimate, the band isn't even on the super petite stage and you could literally give them a high five without moving from your spot. Acoustically not the best I've heard, but seeing as how bands could sweat on you or you could feel the breeze when they bat their eyelashes should make up for it. The food is also decent - an extensive menu of bar-ish stuff, and even if you get a cobb salad it will turn out tasty. You never know, to round out my Smith's experiences, you might find me around a pool table on my next visit. read more

It never fails. Each time i go to Smith's, I have a good time. There are 2 bars (main and upstairs), a 2nd floor music venue, a pool/dart room, and other rooms for eating, etc. The bartenders/servers, expecially Brad and Sam, are great , Always serving strong drinks (made correctly) and......they'll likely remember your name after the first or second visit. The hummas and fried pickles are addicting. On a busy night ,expect to wait in line for the bathroom. Oh... and if your drunk, wearing heels, or both, don't use the one on the right. Smith's Olde Bar is an unexpected venue for me. I've always heard about it, but never knew exactly where it was (at the corner of Piedmont and Monroe) and that they had intimate concert space on the 2nd floor. On this particular weekend, we heard live bluegrass music. Not exactly my jam, but the music still sounded great. You can hear everything, although it can be hard to communicate with friends. There are some tables for sitting, but they're generally taken up. I also like how there are two areas to purchase drinks - one full-service bar and then a booth to get most of the canned beers. I can't speak for the food, but I'd gladly come back to check out more music. read more

In the late 90's this place attracted some pretty good local and big- time acts to its upstairs venue- I met Bernard Butler (Suede) after he played a show there, and local acts like The Tender Idols (anyone remember my boys?) played there on a regular basis. But, slowly but surely, we all stopped seeing shows there. Why? I am not entirely sure. Maybe it was the tiny restrooms that seemed to be hall closets back in the day and renovated into creepy little bathrooms in the back of the place. Or maybe it's the backstage area that looks like a homeless person was kicked off the left-on-the-corner couch, and only about 4 people could fit in the tiny room they let the bands chill out in. If I were a band I'd be ready to play just to get out of there! But the venue is very small but cozy in a creepy way, and the drinks are pretty strong. I've only been downstairs to the bar/pool hall area a few times and felt a little out of place- it was definitely filled with college kids having a grand old time. Even though I was a college kid, I never fit in with that crowd. But it's a nice place to go and have a few drinks and play pool if that's your thing. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. I love the dark dirtiness of it. The horrible bathrooms, the wood bar, the cramped and old venue upstairs. But I wasn't as excited by the drink prices, the crowdedness, the EXTREME lack of parking and the size of the place. I think we were only here once for a dart tournament a couple years ago, and this might be my second time here in eight years of living in ATL. We experienced several things on our visit here...so I will elaborate: Bar experience: We like to sit at the actual bar. This was a good choice, though the booths looked cozy. The place filled up fast, but our bartender was still nice and no attitude from the place...all kinds of folks inside. Did get a little annoying having people order drinks over your head...especially for a weekday. Food experience: Good, but not the best bar grub I've ever had. Kinda pricey. Took quite a while to come out of the kitchen. Show experience: We were here to see "Back Door Slam," a blues band. I loved the creepy feeling of ascending the stairs to the unique venue upstairs. It was small and intimate, yet obviously jammed in a lot of people. We were lucky enough to be invited by some bikers to sit at a coveted table along the side. (thank goodness cause I forgot that there are a million opening bands nowadays, and I was practically asleep by the time Back Door came on.) In any case, the sound was perfect for blues, atmosphere too. Good Stuff. And again, no attitude from anyone...lots of well endowed staff members to the delight of my boy and others in the crowd.
