Smith Woods RV Park was exactly what our family was hoping for. We stayed over Thanksgiving and loved the setting -- tucked into the trees and woods with that true forest campground feel. It was peaceful, scenic, and really gave us the nature experience we were looking for. The staff was amazing -- every single person we interacted with was friendly, helpful, and welcoming. Getting in and out of the park was extremely easy, which made traveling with the RV stress-free. We also appreciated having good connectivity so we could stay in touch while still feeling completely unplugged in nature. Our kids had the best time -- biking around the park and making friends with other families and campers. The location was perfect too: close to Felton and just minutes from Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, which made exploring super convenient. Traveler beware. When the business has a sign on the desk that says no refunds after check-in there is a reason. This park is showing its age and only has one male and one female bathroom open with one stall in each and two showers (although only one worked in the male bathroom). The bathroom is located near the entrance ( not all that close to our original site). There is no free wifi in the park at the sites and no cell service. You can purchase wifi for $8 for 6 hours but we had to move to a site closer to the office and closer to the long term residents in order for it to work. You have to purchase the wifi for EVERY device you plan to use it on. Only positive was that the lady in the office was willing to move us closer to the bathroom/wifi. read more

This is a charming older park with friendly staff set among mature redwoods. Spaces aren't as tight as some reviewers have said. It's not a parking lot like some others have complained about. There's no cell service, which can be a plus or a minus. There is a wifi room near the office with an outside table as well, so you're not totally off the grid. Basic wifi is free, higher speeds cost extra. The basic was fine for text and email. The pool had no water and looked in need of repairs. There's a playground in good shape. There's cable TV but it didn't work at all. Apparently you need an adapter they can provide, but it wasn't provided or mentioned on arrival My biggest gripe is that while the park is under a mile from the town, the road is dangerous to walk. There is virtually no shoulder on the road, and there are blind curves. I turned back after two drivers honked at me for being a pedestrian. It's hard to enjoy the space when the staff are so miserable. The women in the front office are rude and grumpy -- snippy on the phone, attitudes when you check in, and a general awful demeanor when you interact with them in any way. Big attitudes, no eye contacts, in general something you might expect from your 16-year old but not a grown woman. Luckily, there are quite a few RV spots in Felton. We've been to Smithwoods many times and finally just didn't like being treated so poorly. I recommend trying one of the many other great locations nearby. read more

Fairly quiet and reasonably clean. A little on the pricy side for what you get, though. Our escort was great in assisting us when backing into our site. Trash was overflowing for a couple of days while we were there. I don't know what that was all about. Cell service is non-existent there, but you can buy overpriced, subpar wifi service by the hour. My wife bought an hour, but it was so glitchy, we ended up going to Starbucks to send out e-mails to family. The icing on the cake for me was the $2 per day charge for dogs. Seems Smithwoods has taken a page from the corporate parks playbook on how to nickel and dime their guests. read more

Smithwoods checks some boxes for us...but not all. Which is why it gets 3 stars. It's beautiful there, it is the Santa Cruz Redwoods after all. It has full hookups, so check. It is affordable and very close to Henry Cowell, check. The staff escorts you into your spot and helps you park which is mandatory to protect the trees and hookups, but it's kind of nice for us because extra help is always nice. They have no internet access unless you want to walk up to "the wifi room".....which is kind of a problem sometimes. It became a problem for us when it was pouring rain and we needed to check details for our next destination, which meant we trudged through the mud to get in only to find the room was pretty full, understandable, but inconvenient. There is a park next door that checks more of our boxes, which is the Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort in case you are comparing. They have internet, however they are pricey. We stayed at Smithwoods for Memorial Day weekend, space #55, in our 28' TT. It was a FHU site that sits between two huge redwood trees. The lower bathrooms near us were still closed. Only the bathhouse restrooms next to the pool are open. They are dated, but clean. The heated pool was warm and pretty clean. The play structure is dated and could use some TLC. The dog park is tiny, but cute. The billiards room has two nice pool tables, pool sticks and a change machine for quarters. The front office has ice cream, snacks, candy, firewood, Smithwoods swag and drinks for sale. The front office staff was always nice. The WiFi lounge is also a game room with puzzles and board games to play. The WiFi was slow. My one bar of AT&T cell signal was much faster. There is no cell service throughout most of the park. You are 20 minutes from the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and Roaring Camp RR is a 5 minute drive. Check-in was rough. They requested our registration for the truck and the TT, which was a surprise to us, since it hadn't been mentioned on their website or when we spoke on the phone. I had neither current registration card with me. The Costa Rican Golf Cart Guy gave me way too much grief about it. I was driving a new truck and a new trailer, but Costa Rican Golf Cart guy wanted to dress me down with a lecture about what the vehicle code requires. He came off as an A-hole and left a bad impression with my entire family. Ironically, he's mentioned many times in Yelp reviews for the same confrontational behavior with others. Costa Rican Golf Cart guy redeemed our opinion of him when he escorted us to our site and assisted me with backing into our site which sits between two gigantic redwood trees. I appreciated the help. He also was much more friendly and personable the rest of our stay. Smithwoods is a family friendly, quiet RV park set amongst the redwoods. Other than the unnecessary hassle at check-in, it was an pleasant stay for us. read more

We have been visiting this location for over 7 years now. I never felt compelled to write a review until this past trip. The facilities are fair and lacking allot of amenities that the guest is being charged for. Pros: *RV Spaces good size *Quick drive to the beach *Beautiful location under the redwood trees *each guest is directed to their space which is a nice safety feature for kids riding around Cons: *Only one set of bathrooms and showers. Quite the hike for those at the other end of the grounds to shower etc. *No pool *No access to the river *No WiFi unless you go to the club house *seems fairly run down in general *limited/dated club house *Absurd amount of barking dogs Because Smithwoods prices are nearly the same as Cotillion Gardens, and Cotillion has nicer updated amenities and facilities, also a stream lined website -- we will skip Smithwoods in the future. read more

We've never felt LESS welcomed to a park with a hefty price tag of $500/week. Within two minutes of pulling up the crabby old man in his golf cart greeted us with "so this is what your claiming to be 35 feet?" We have a new fifth wheel. We know it's exact dimensions. It felt rather combative. Got cannot stay more than 11 days I believe. It's a sharp turn from Hwy 9 but doable. The spot a are just beautiful under redwoods. The most frustrating part of this park is the lack of internet connection. But if you want to unplug for a wknd....it's not a bad place to be for sure. read more

Father's Day Weekend, on Sunday we started experiencing water issues around dinner time which trickled into Monday morning- these issues were not communicated but according to management a "sign" was put up in the office. This created frustration during our stay. When contacting the office, I left my email address and received the email from the owner Debbie. Check out the last line of the email. After reading Yelp reviews, a guest from 14 days ago had the EXACT experience with water and customer service. A few other campers in our friend group reached out to the office and were told the same thing, DON'T COME BACK! Do yourself a favor and take Debbie's advice, stay at Santa Cruz Redwoods or one of the other local RV Parks.... Smithwoods is NOT it. read more

We have been frequent visitors to Smithwoods the past few years. We have always found the park to be welcoming until this October 2023 trip. My son and his family of 2 wanted to join us for a picnic at our site. He diligently stopped at the office to pay the $20 fee for his car (as we have ALWAYS paid for any guests that visit while we are camping). He was told he also needed to pay $5 for each person - in addition to the $20 car fee. So he, his wife and 12 year old daughter were charged an additional $15 to visit with us for 2 hours. Absolutely ridiculous. After they left I went to the office to question this "policy." I was told, in not friendly tones, that it is the policy and that's that. I asked when that policy began as it had not been so during past visits. The clerk said it was on the website and on our reservation - using her pen numerous times to tap the "policy" paper posted on the desk. Having been guests there several times I admit I didn't check the website or my reservation other than to check the dates. Policy is policy she stated. Very uncomfortable conversation. After having been a resident of the valley for over 30 years, we always recommended Smithwoods to fellow rv'ers. My family is still local. Not a good move on Smithwoods' part to initiate these fees - also wifi fees. What's next? Charges for how many trees on your site? When I stated we would, unfortunately, not be back due to these "policies" - no comment from clerk. Customer service? NO. I asked the owners to correspond with me so I could explain my concerns before posting - no response. Smithwoods' loss is Santa Cruz Redwoods' gain. read more

Overpriced. Period. The staff is very nice, but amenities are somewhat run down and in need of either repair or renovation. Tire play area = One tire on the corner for kids to play on. WiFi, very limited range in one area of the park. Zero cell reception. Bathrooms one set not two, walking a 1/4 mile to the bathroom in the rain is fun. Thankfully they are heated and clean but old old old. Less like a resort and more like a 70's truck stop. There are no activities nearby you don't have to drive to. I would think this goes for all three parks in the area. The cherry on top, the rules. No fires after 10, no BAC over .08 no dogs on leashes longer than 6', absolutely no motorized toy vehicles of any type this is not specific but I drive RC's and it makes me think they are prohibited. This isn't a good camping experience overall. The state parks are much better and better priced. read more

Long but worth the read! We were excited to stay here as it has been recommended by friends. The surrounding trees and shade are nice and relaxing. The spots are really tight so be prepared to be camping with the people next to you or behind you. Sunday night around 5 we realized there was no water. 3 other people came out and realized they didn't have water either. One of them went up to the office And was told someone ran over the water pipe and broke it causing the water to be off for majority of the night. It came back on around 9:30. *I totally understand accidents happen and can't be controlled- communication could have been better but no big deal. Majority of the park had left sunday so it was essentially empty sunday evening to Monday morning. Monday morning 10am, when we are getting ready to pack up and clean, we realize we have no water again. Our neighbors come out and say the same thing. I asked the guy driving around and he answered with "oh this is scheduled maintenance with the city. Should be about 2 hours or so." With the water issues the night before and lack of communication we were annoyed. They closed all the bathrooms and the RVs had no running water. This left me pretty frustrated due to not having the ability to flush out tanks and properly clean our trailer. We had to drive to the nearest Safeway to go to the bathroom before leaving after being hooked up. The best part: I called on our way home to talk to someone regarding my concerns with lack of communication with the scheduled maintenance water turn off and was told "it's not usually successful but I'll forward your information to the owner and hopefully she'll get back to you." I then received this email from the OWNER. She never talked to me just sent this unprofessional email. The last paragraph was so rude and uncalled for. I appreciate the partial refund and she could have left it at that but you better believe we will not be returning. read more

I have somewhat mixed feelings about this park. On the positive side, the staff was courteous and helpful, the setting among huge redwoods is nice, the location is convenient to many other attractions, and the general area surrounding the park is very beautiful. It was quiet during quiet hours. And now the negatives: Are you old enough to remember camping in Yosemite in the 50s and 60s when the campsites were packed together so closely you wondered if you could use your neighbors stakes to anchor your tent? This park is 100 years old and almost everything here reminds me so much of that era. It's RVs now, instead of tents, that are packed together like sardines, except less orderly. If your neighbors are outside their unit they may be less than 15 feet away from you and you'll hear everything they say to each other. Their outdoor patio area will likely be just as close to your RV as yours is. If they start a campfire, you'll get much of the smoke, and you'll smell like their campfire the next morning. This didn't fit our expectations. The infrastructure is ancient, crumbling and rusty. Because it's so shady, it tends to be dark, wet and cold for most of the day. Smithwoods RV Park was once a very nice place. Its current state seems to be a classic example of a family business built up by one generation, and where the current generation is now living off the the income and doing little to maintain the once fine property. My first clue to this was when after settling in I walked up to the swimming pool. I immediately noticed several obvious large black patches on the bottom, which I though were likely just some redwood debris that had blown in. I then looked a little closer and thought they were more likely patches of worn off paint or stucco. But no, when I did venture into the pool, I found that these large black patches were slimy black algae, yuck! Now this was in early August, the height of the summer season, and this black algae condition would have taken several weeks or months to develop to this degree. It is impossible that the management was unaware of this condition, yet they choose not to deal with it. To me this is a pretty good indicator of the low level of concern that this owner has for their guests. Next, although there is a large restroom down in the main park area, it was not operational. According to some of the other guests I spoke with, it hadn't been working in over a year. The ONLY women's restroom in the entire park was a single toilet stall up by the pool, and even it had issues. A 10 year old sign posted there acknowledged that they had plumbing issues, yet evidently the owner does not feel that repairing or upgrading the plumbing is a priority worth spending money on. Plumbing issues seemed to be a constant issue during our stay here. The last experience I wish to relate was when we woke up one morning and found that there was no water at our RV. This meant no way to flush our toilet, no showers, and no water for handwashing or making breakfast; definitely a major inconvenience. When I went to the office to see what had happened, I was told that they had discovered a plumbing leak the day before, and that they had shut off the water late that evening to make repairs. The woman there said that a worker was supposed to notify all the guests, but that she'd had a feeling that maybe he hadn't notified everyone. Obviously we hadn't been notified, or we would have simply filled up our RV's fresh water tank and the lack of water in the morning would have been of no concern. When I checked out I asked the woman in the office what she thought it was worth to wake up in the morning with no way to flush the toilet, not be able to take a shower, and not have water for making breakfast. She told me in no uncertain terms that they did not refund for any condition issues, period. My overall impression of Smithwoods is that it is now a deteriorating RV park with an owner who has little concern for the guests, and who desperately holds onto every dollar taken in even when failing to provide a reasonable level of service. It is sad to see this happen to what was once such an enjoyable place. read more

Just returned from a mid-week stay and loved the park! Staff was super friendly and always helpful. We stayed in Site 47, which was nice and spacious for us. Happen to go during Customer Appreciation week and received a free night, bonus! Our site was a little muddy at the edge of the road from rain the week before, but nothing horrible. The sites next to us and behind us were all good looking sites. We arrived on a Tuesday and didn't get neighbors until Thursday. The Point area is a nice group area. Loved all the trees and cool weather. Close to so many amenities/attractions. We will definitely be back. read more

This RV park used to be great, we've been coming here with multiple families on multiple sites for years without an issue. Our family went for Memorial Day in a rental RV, which is something we have done before and has always been allowed. We even checked in with the site to make sure no rules were being broken. Upon leaving we were told that we were not welcome back and that our site (that we had been renting for YEARS) would be given away due to our disregard to the rules. Apparently, every 5th wheel camper must be accompanied by a vehicle capable of towing it. This was never mention initially, and why would they allow the use of rental units if a large car capable of towing is a requirement. This place used to be a nice spot. We have been going to Smithwoods RV park since we bought our 2016 Thor Outlaw Class A RV which is 39.92 feet long. The park has a max of 40 foot long and we have always made it fine and had great stays with our grandchildren. I called for a reservation next year on 12/29/22 and when she looked up my account, she said we were tagged in the computer as 41 feet and not allowed. I told her i would send her the specs and she said no that once you are tagged in the computer it cannot be changed and we can no longer go there. We were there last April 2022 and while my wife was going inside to check in, one of the guys came out with a tape measure for my RV, I even held the end for him and he said nothing so assumed it was fine. We stayed there for several days and had a great time. Very dissapointing that they make this incorrect measurement and locked me out of our favorite place and not say anything at the time of check in. We will NEVER stay here again. The staff is the definition of RUDE, the moment we drove in (super steep hill btw) the guy in the golf cart that takes you down to your site never even greeted us, terrible interaction. I have to agree with yelp review @Fate S that it also does make me wonder if all the wonderful and positive reviews are from the staff members that work/live there or family. You have to be escorted and told how to park your rig. Yes, you do and it's horrible. I usually do it for my husband and spot for him but the staff insisted on spotting for us and he straight up told him it was fine and as soon as I watched our slides pull out I stopped my husband from allowing the slides to go any further because if he would have, it would have damaged there posts. I do not know why you have a staff member that first of all is rude from the start then insists to tell you how to park your rig to basically get you to possibly cause damage. I am glad I kept eyes on it all, do not trust golf cart guy. They are sloppy and unprofessional and act like they know it all, that try and make you feel less. Throughout our stay guy that escorted us drove around in the golf cart drove around and gave a strange look, never a "good morning" or "hello" We started a bonfire and as it was starting. The staff that lives on site (brown mobile home by river) walks over to us to tell us "you gotta get that going it's too smokey" ever since that day we have felt watched like hawks. Seems like they are all bored and insecure. No privacy. I mean fires do cause smoke, it's supposed to do that when it's in the process of getting started! They have a loud dog but yet I never went over to complain. The community of people that live on site permanently have a really good relationship, which is great but not great when you feel like they are all on customers bad side. A few of them went on a walk with there dogs and were talking loudly and cussing having conversations from across the sites. We are not people to complain but reason I am writing this review is to help the next person reading this stop them from staying here. Terrible interaction with staff. You have to be escorted and told how to park your rig. First of all when I got there I had to wait while the guy taking me to my site knew I was there but sat and chatted with a guy. He yelled at me coming unmasked to my car that I was not listening to him when I defied his order to turn my wheel more. Anyone who has my small trailer knows otherwise. When I got out to assess my spot, he said "I don't have time for this. You have to listen to me". It got worse from there. I had my friends daughter visiting me for an hour. She had flown in from SC. I told them and said it would cost $20. I said I would pay for it. I waited up top by the office and the hosts camper. She came, we chatted then I showed her to my spot. While we were eating, they came down and said I snuck her in because she did not register. No one mentioned registering earlier. When I said we would do so after finishing our lunch, they evicted me. I use to love this place. No wonder they are never full. read more

Beware of the ownership and poor customer service here! We booked a year and a week in advance (they allowed us to, and their policy is not posted on their website or office that we could find). Then we were called a week later and told the spots we had booked were rebooked by another party because we were booked over a year in advance (by 1week) We were not called to see if we still wanted to book the spots or told when we booked that we needed to call back at the 365 day point. We asked to speak to the owner to express our disappointment. The owner, Rich or Rick I believe called us today and told us it was their policy and even though it was their fault, he didn't care! He only cared about his "policy", even though his system allowed the booking. Rick only saw his point and didn't care about our plans or how it affected us at the customer. He told us if we didn't like it we could cancel and go to another park and that there were 2 other camp grounds next to him and we could stay there. He didn't care one bit about us as the customer. He said if we didn't like it, we could choose another campground. As my husband was trying to explain to him that us as the customer should come first and he should see things from the customers perspective and not the owners and see how their error impacted us, he cut my husband off and said, "you are being hostile toward me and therefore I am cutting you off and cancelling all of your reservations." At no time was my husband hostile toward him and was only explaining facts. He didn't want to hear that either and cut my husband off again and said, "nope, we are done and all your reservations are cancelled in the system." WHAT!? You don't like the truth and your response is to cancel our reservations. Completely unacceptable! Don't stay here! It is a nice place to camp because of the scenery, but the place is run down and the bathrooms have been in the same state of repair for 4 years. We have over looked that because of the location and scenery, but now you see why it is the way it is because of poor ownership and leadership. The owner is resting on the fact that no matter what the customer needs them / him more than he needs the customer. Very disappointing experience today for sure. Never expected that. Sad! Stay clear. We stay at rv parks all over the western US. What they do well: check-in process and help parking/backing. Also there's a clean pool and table tennis. Sound of a babbling creek and birds so happy it sounds like a Disneyland soundtrack. Metal fire pit at each spot. Group camping areas to fit up to 10 rigs - perfect for large gatherings. Walking distance to Felton. There's always room for improvement: spots are close together and they are at capacity on weekends so you'll smell your neighbors fire pit and hear their convos. Lower bathrooms aren't always open and when they are, aren't as clean as main bathrooms. Minimal cel service with Verizon. WiFi only works near office and you can't go to websites: just calls, text and apps. read more

This R V Park although central to a lot of attractions fell short on a couple of areas. The staff although helpful has no authority to like offer refunds or such. They advertise as no aggressive dogs allowed and while that may be hard to enforce when your safety feels threatened as was the case with us you should be allowed the option of leaving and a refund. We left asking for a refund for just the one day we didn't use and were referred to the owner who has yet to respond to our request. Located near Henry Cowell State Park, not far from Santa Cruz and not far from Silicon Valley, this place is pretty amazing. So close to many things but your feel like you are in the middle of no where. The town of Felton is about 3-5 min down the road and has everything you need. We enjoyed out night here very much. It was so beautiful and relaxing being amongst the Redwood trees. Very quiet setting. Campsite was spacious, private and level. Camp Hosts were friendly and provided an excellent service is guiding you to and into your site. Make sure you follow the directions for coming in on Mt Herman Rd from Hwy 17, rather than Hwy 9. read more

Smithwoods is a great RV Park. Our site was 117 and we were there this past weekend. We leave fairly close by and wanted to give it a try! Check in is a breeze, and a nice host takes you to your site and guides you into the spot. We were in 117 which is a GREAT spot with the river behind (not accessible from campsite) and Redwood trees all around. The sites have full hookups. The little check in office has some supplies if you need them. Not a big store, but there is a Ace Hardware and KMart nearby. The campground is quiet and really nice. It has a pool (opens April 15th) and other fun things to do.
