This is a well established barbecue restaurant that has been here for a long time. From what I've been told it's been here for decades which is always a good sign of great food and service. They open at 10:30 am for lunch which is great for an early riser like myself. I was the only customer at this time so service was lightening fast. I ordered two ribs, beans and potato salad. Hands down some of the best BBQ and sides I've ever had. The brisket in particular was incredible but the ribs were also almost just as good. The flavors of everything from the actual meat to the sauce to the rub to their special hot sauce is just unmatched and incomparable to most BBQ I've had being a Texan for a quarter of a decade. I recently went with one of my grandpas recently that lived in Brownwood in the 70's and he was surprised to see it still open and told me it tasted just as good as before. The food was great. It is a place we want to go back. We split a 3 meat plate and the portion size was great. The brisket, ribs and home made sausage were all great. The ribs were my favorite. The last time I came here was in August of 2021! I was an incoming freshmen to Texas Tech University and I had just finished Red Raider Camp at Lake Brownwood. Some friends that I had met there and I decided to go to lunch before we headed back to our respective towns and we decided on Smitty's. It was AMAZING. The brisket was tender and juicy, the sides were incredible, and don't get me started on the BBQ sauce. They even had options for people like me who can't handle much heat! And the woman working at the counter was one of the sweetest women I've ever met. She had her son there and he was running around talking to everyone and his momma was up at the front laughing and smiling, it was the definition of southern hospitality. If you're in Brownwood, you definitely have to stop here and eat some classic southern BBQ! read more

My girlfriend and I were looking for a good restaurant for lunch as we were driving through town. A quick look on Apple Maps took us here. It is a little, unassuming, place, but some of the best bbq I've ever had. What a disappointment. Visitors brought me lunch from here and I was excited to taste the best. The brisket was smokey and tasteless. Beans had no flavor. I expected bacon and onions if not in beans surely in collard greens. The potato salad was sweet pickle mush. Then to top it off the cobbler had not been cooked long enough and had gooey, raw flour taste. A little salt would have helped everything to have something less bland. The bbq sauce was tasty. Driving thru and stopped for BBQ on recommendation from a google search. Brisket is served chopped. Pork ribs were tender. Both meats tasted good, but ribs were the best. I personally did not like the BBQ sauce, but my husband did. Sides of beans & potato salad come with a plate order & they were ok. The food here is very good. The service was very good also. I had the three meat combo. Brisket, homemade sausage, and pork ribs with a side of potato salad and beans. My husband and I stopped here during our cross country move from San Diego to Miami. What a great find!! Probably my favorite meal of the whole trip. Just WOW. My husband, daughter, and I found Smitty's on a whim during our long drive home from Colorado to Austin, TX. We were craving good BBQ - something we couldn't find on our vacation, and were pleased to find a good little mom and pop joint. The BBQ here was awesome - everything about our meals was superb, from the German style potato salad to the coleslaw to the brisket sandwich and beef rib and lastly, the peach cobbler - o' the peach cobbler *drools*. On top of the mouth-watering food, the service was great, the employee that took our order and served us was very kind and made us feel at home. The restaurant was clean, as well as the restrooms. I stopped in for a lb. of brisket to snack on while driving home. I asked for it to be cut from the fat side of the brisket that is usually more moist than the other side. It lacked a little salt, the fat wasn't completely rendered in most parts, it didn't have much smoke on it, and most of the slices were a little dry. It was probably smoked at too high a temperature and not long enough, hence the absence of enough smoke and many tough pieces. I don't want to be too hard on Smitty's because I've only been there once. I may try it again sometime but I will check out what else Brownwood has to offer first. read more
