Went here with the husband for Dine LA. It was alright. The service was so-so. The hostess sat us at a table which was right in the middle of the room near the hallway to the patio and the kitchen. Since there were other tables available, I wasn't thrilled to receive this one. Our server was very nice and friendly. However, it took a long time to receive bread. She also did not bring the correct bottle of wine. The pacing of the starters and bread and wine arrival was off--bread was late (but I guess they were baking it so that makes it better) The food was alright. We both had the Dine LA options. My ceasar salad was overdressed. The salad my husband had was way overcooked. Most disturbingly, the steaks we were served were extremely overcooked. We both ordered medium rare and received well or medium well steaks which were completely brown (looked like how I used to get my steak at the Sizzler when I was 8). We sent them back--which was a first for both of us. The replacement steaks were more medium than medium rare but at least they weren't brown. The waitress handled the situaion well and was totally nice about sending the steaks back. The desserts were great, expecially the Sunday. My advice, however, would to be to save up and go to The Parkway Grill or Cheval Blanc...This isn't the best of the Smith Brothers' options. read more

Probably my favorite restaurant in Pasadena! I've loved everything I've tried... Corn bread, both their burgers, steak, salads, etc. Drinks are good too and they have a nice bar. Food and drinks are great and so is the ambiance. However, sometimes if you sit at their front patio, they tend to forget about you... This has unfortunately happened to me TWICE and I've had to go inside to tell them we want to order or that we need the check. I like good service, which they have always provided inside, but sometimes it lacks on the patio. This can be frustrating... Imagine having a wonderful dinner, then 30 min go by with no sign of the server after the food is dropped off. But, since the food is outstanding, plus I can walk to the restaurant, I will be back! Everything was exceptional EXCEPT for one thing. Do NOT valet your car. There is a public parking there, which we did not notice until after we left the restaurant. I don't know where they parked our car ... it was COMPLETELY covered in bird droppings when they brought it back. REALLY bad. I had my car washed 2 days ago. This is so frustrating. Excellent! Sat outside in the heated patio. The atmosphere of the restaurant was nice and fireplace was great! We had ahi and cornbread for appetizers and both were delicious! I also ordered a Moscow mule and it tasted just right. For entrees I had the Smitty salad and my boyfriend had the prime rib with mashed potatoes and asparagus. The salad was decent not as large as I would have liked for an entree. Shrimp was yummy and the salad flavorful. Prime rib was awesome so tasty with the au jus! Would definitely come back! read more

Food is fine. No service if you sit outside. We had a reservation for an outdoor table. When we checked in with the hostess, all outdoor tables were full, she said they were waiting for the guests to leave, so we waited outside the restaurant and eventually people from one table left. After standing outside for 10 minutes and no one came out to clear that table or update us, I went inside to ask the hostess if she was aware the guests had left. That was when she realized the wait staff didn't even know about it. Then we had to wait for the table to be cleared and remade. After we finally finished ordering, dinner rush was over, every table outside was empty except for us. Inside was pretty empty too. My soup came but no spoon. Ok no biggie. Then main courses came, and that was pretty much it in term of service. We were waiting so long in between each touch point such as asking for refills, dessert menu, the check, etc., I almost went inside to look for our waiter. Really disappointed at the lack of service especially when our friends recommended this place. We tip up to 30% during holiday season but this place didn't deserve the 18% we left. Swanky, old-school, lovely 40's lounge look. Smitty's really harkens back to old glamorous Hollywood- the Bogie & Bacall type of Hollywood. I was craving some comfort food, and my husband found Smitty's via the internet. Reviewers were raving about the chicken pot pie---bingo! the perfect comfort food I was seeking. The service was above-par from the seating hostess to our ultra-cool server, Michael, who goes by the nickname "MBR" to help customers differentiate between another server who works there also named Michael. My husband forgot his cheater opticals, and MBR graciously handed his cheaters over to my husband so that he could review the menu. After MBR told us about the specials, I began to waiver on my initial decision. After great deliberation, I decided to stick with my first game plan, the chicken pot pie. My husband ordered the appetizer stroganoff and a side of cream corn. When our food was brought out, I almost felt embarrassed by the portion size of the pot pie. I got over it quickly though and dug right in. My husband enjoyed his stroganoff and the cream corn. Although the cream corn was not so creamy, it was sweet and fresh off the cob. Suffice to say, I could only eat a measly 1/4 of the pie and happily took it home. I've been snacking on it all day. read more

We picked Smitty's for a little pre- Christmas celebration. We had been prior and had such a great experience with wonderful food and wonderful service from a handsome young waiter. The restaurant looked just beautiful decked out for Christmas. We were looking forward to a nice meal to cap off a festive day of Christmas shopping. We got to our table and the waitress came over and took our drink order. She is an older woman with a short blond or grey bob. Tall and thin. She was pleasant enough, although she kept asking us to repeat ourselves. It is loud so that is understandable. We ordered three wines and a child's milk. She brought the wine over in a timely manner and left the table without a word as she still had drinks on her tray for another table. No milk. And that was it. For quite awhile. She visited all the tables around us, but never came back to ours. I wanted to hear the fish of the day before making up my mind. We sat there with our menus and just waited. And waited. After a good ten minutes we spotted her at another table and made eye contact with her. It was obvious that she still wasn't coming back to our table as she was turning to walk back towards the kitchen. We smiled at her to make it clear we were ready to order. Apparently this was the wrong thing to do because she obviously got pissed off about it. No nicer way to put that. She asked what we would like. My mother ordered her food and then she looked at me. I asked "What is the market fish tonight?". She asked me to repeat myself almost in disbelief. I asked again and her very hostile reply was "It's what I told you it was". That was her reply to me question. From a waitress who hadn't said more then a handful of words to us before now. Nothing about food. So I pointed to the market fish on the menu thinking maybe she misunderstood. Nope! She said "I already told you it is salmon and sword fish". Honestly we were baffled. Was this a joke? So I made the mistake of asking how the sword fish was prepared. She didn't like that question either. Her reply was literally yelling "How is it?! It's GREAT." To really drive home how annoying I was being I guess. So I had to ask her AGAIN what it came with. She said mashed potatoes and carrots and a sauce with capers. And just stared at me. Like I was the stupidest person to ever sit in her section. So I ordered it because I wanted this interaction to be over. This was how the rest of our ordering experience went. She was so rude to my mother when she tried to order our starters my jaw dropped. She acted like we were all imbeciles who were bothering her. And we had to order the milk all over again. Did she think we were somebody else? We didn't complain because this was supposed to be a nice night. This was something we'd been looking forward to and fighting with our waitress or making a scene was not a part of our plans. We still tipped her 18% because those are the kind of people we are. It's a busy and loud restaurant so maybe she was having a bad night. But it bothered us all so much that we were still talking about it this morning. We go out to eat all of the time. We are always extremely polite and grateful to the people that help make our meal happen. We have never had such a bizarre and hostile experience with a server. Especially since it was completely out of the blue. The food was wonderful. Delicious! I was happy I got the swordfish because I loved it. Everyone else was very nice. And we will come back. But we will make darn sure we never sit in her section ever again. read more

Always a warm, friendly and consistent dining experience, away from the hub-bub of "Old Town." Bob and Gregg Smith really have created a genuine "dining room away from home." I just wish my Pasadena friends, with dining rooms could cook like this! Start with the corn bread and I usually get the prime rib or the famous "home-made-style" chicken pot pie. I made a reservation for 2 @ 6p and notified the restaurant that we were celebrating a birthday. Requested seating outside and we were promptly seated and told by the hostess we need to be out by 8. Not a problem I imagined. From there the service went down hill, waited 10 minutes to be acknowledged or given water. Another 10 minutes to see a waiter. I had to ask the busboy to get our waiter as were ready to order. Then they handed by friend (birthday girl) a brown envelope with a happy birthday note from "your friends at Smittys" I grabbed the hostess and told her the service was so slow we might not be done by 8, she said she would inform the manager. We never saw the manager or the hostess again. The waiter finally came and took the order. Food came out and was very good...scallop special and prime rib. Had to ask for water re-fills. Then a birthday sundae arrived, not sure if that was because of the poor service or routine but seemed strange to get a random card earlier. We didn't get out of there until after 8p as predicted. Side note, we were seated at a table by the entrance to the tent, tent allows dogs ( 2 were there) and smokers standing outside the tent entrance made for some unpleasant smoke while we were eating. This place came recommended by some dude that my boss was stuck in the airport with, so we came on our first night in Pasadena. They sort of cover the area between high end diner, down home cooking and steak house. The result is a fantastic free range chicken dish--buttery, well seasoned, tender. Overall, very delicious. The atmosphere is nice, the free homemade potato chips on the bar are awesome also. The beer selection is kind of meh, but the food portions are gigantic. Great place to go for old-style Pasadena dining. The food is adequate, if somewhat overpriced (get Aunt Minnie to take you there), but the drinks make up for it. You can just sit back in a booth and imagine you're landed gentry while you eat your Crab Louis or some other menu throw-back to mid-century fancy schmancy stuff. Make a reservation, though, or they are likely to tell you they have nothing available - as you look around at all the empty tables. The service staff seems to have a lot of turnover too - some know what they're doing; many don't. Great bartender, though, and those homemade potato chips they serve are pretty yummy. I made a reservation for a Friday night 8PM for my girlfriend and I to celebrate our anniversary. We arrived at 745, only to wait almost 40 minutes to be seated. What i did not like was that we witnessed and heard 2 couples walk in and get a table while we were still waiting for ours. I went to the hostess to ask her what was going on and she tried to play me by saying that we were next to be seated. I'm assuming that she forgot about us. when we were seated everything was smooth sailing from then on. Came here with my wife Miyuki for Valentine's Day late lunch at 3pm. The place was empty, save for two other tables. We came, because the food is always extra tasty and well prepared. My only three stars is for the terrible service. I will not mention the name of the waitress. We sat at a booth, which has a table the size of an ice rink. Could not reach the far side where the cruet sat, it should have been pushed within reach. No bread was served. Our waitress came by very occasionally when she wasn't chatting​ at another patron's​ table, and we had to always stop her for service. When the bread came, was it abundant in a basket? No, just 4 small connected slices on a small plate. I left the usual size tip because I'm a nice guy. I settle my frustration by commenting here on Yelp. I see they leave a form for comments along with the bill. Not the place if the comment is to do with the server. We probably won't go there again, because it's a bit of a drive from Hollywood, and the goal wasn't up to par. read more

A friend of mine and I revisited Smitty's in Pasadena last night after a superb concert at nearby All Saints and enjoyed a fairly leisurely dinner. While I love the justifiably famous meatloaf and mashed potatoes, I was shocked when the spinach I added on the side cost $8. My friend loved the buttermilk fried chicken and cornbread muffins. We turned to desserts, and the young waiter strongly recommended the chocolate mousse cake. The coffee with it was good and strong, but the cake -- it was chilled, viscous and taste-free. I should have gone for my friend's hot fudge sundae, which he enjoyed, or Key lime pie, which I always enjoy. Nonetheless, it was a pleasant evening with attentive service. read more

I felt cared for, welcomed, and well-fed. My server was very attentive, and helpful, as I was being really indecisive. Finally ended up with a roast beet salad with goat cheese (yum), halibut with a carrot-ginger-leek sauce (didn't really scream ginger OR leeks, though), and topped it all off with apple bread pudding, which I sure didn't need, but somehow managed to just-about-finish it. Little noisy in the place, but still felt comfortable. I'll be back. ___________________ I'm back - and I am sorry that my visit to Pasadena is over - I planned my last meal here at Smitty's. Again, I felt well-cared for, I had a flight to catch, and thought I planned enough time for dinner here - when I arrived, I was told dinner didn't start until 5:30 - (would that leave enough time for dinner, and then make it to the airport by 7? - I was willing to take the risk). Rather than a leisurely meal, I opted for the Reuben - Oh, yum - Not a huge gut-buster like some restaurants, but very very good, and not overly laden with gooey cheese or dressing - just right. But the best part was the side order of red and green salad (a substitute for fries) - red and green cabbage with red onions and cranberries in a light vinegar dressing - I could eat a whole plateful of this stuff. My server got the hint that I was pushing my time, and dropped my check off a little early - she gets kudos for just keeping that in mind. When I visit Pasadena again (I hope I do) Smitty's will be a destination. read more

Came here for a friend's birthday over the weekend and had no expectations at all for this restuarant since I've never heard about it before. I did not regreat going to this restaurant at all! Their Fillet Mignon Burger and prim rib was the bomb! Boyfriend's prim rib was cooking to perfection and just the way he likes! I didn't get a chance to try their deserts since we brought a cheesecake for the birthday boy (we found out they don't serve cheesecake..so we had to buy one!).. Our server was very attentive and wonderful too! His sense of humor definitely kept us hype that night! Lastly...got to say that the restaurant's atmosphere was wonderful too! I thought the bar was a bit too small and it was a bit loud...but hey, it's the weekend so that was okay with me...
