We decided to try Nick's for lunch to celebrate my birthday. OMG!!!! What a great place to dine. We had a reservation so we were seated right away on the second floor, just above the bar. The music was a little on the loud side so conversation was a little strained. The food was absolutely amazing. Our server was very friendly and informative but was not quite as attentive as we would expect for an establishment like this. This was our first time here, so we had to try the Asparagus Fries. The asparagus was cooked to perfection but the batter did not have much flavor. Members of our party ordered the California Salad, a Veggie Burger, the Meatloaf and a Picante Pizza. The California Salad was smaller than expected but delicious. The Veggie Burger was excellent! The Meatloaf was the hit of the table. It was so good that my wife did not offer a taste to any of us. She was in food Heaven. The pizza was exactly as described and tasted wonderful. Since we were celebrating my birthday, our server brought me a delicious piece of double chocolate cake with a candle in it. Nice touch!! We also had one of their Warm Butter Cake's with some excellent vanilla ice cream on top. Absolutely wonderful!. This may be our new "go-to" place. Was in Pasadena the other day, and had not eaten yet, so decided to go by Nick's, since I had never been, and try a few of the items that sounded tasty on the menu. Made a reservation about an hour before, so when we got there we were seated immediately. After a quick glance at the drink menu, had to get the Mai Tai with lilikoi foam on top. So delicious. Had my first lilikoi foam in Maui and I love that I'm starting to see it around Los Angeles now. Adds such a punch of flavor to an after we balanced drink. For food, we started with the bacon deviled eggs and shrimp taquitos. Those deviled eggs were lightly fried, which was different, then had apple wood smoked bacon on top, just a really tasty bite. The shrimp taquitos were also not what you would expect, nice and light but still very good. Entrees we went with the center cut fillet and the prime rib dip with swiss cheese on a brioche bun. That sandwich just melts if your mouth after dipping it in the jous, and the cheese was the perfect accompiament. The fillet was cooked perfect as well, coming out medium rare. Overall, great restaurant in Pasadena. Definitely get the Mai Tai, Devine eggs and prime rib dip. Taquitos were good and, if you're feeling like another hg er appetizer, definitely a way to go . Ambiance is great, though a little loud. Service is good. All our entrees were very good BUT the artichokes were not good. We first thought they were undercooked. They were warm (not hot) and it was difficult to get any meat off of them. I rarely ask for something to be sent back but especially for the price point here, these were not OK. We let them know that they were undercooked. The chokes were gone for a while and when they came back they were slightly better so we just made due and realized that they just weren't very good artichokes. Also, though the heart was good, the flavor of the leaves was not great and the dipping sauce was nothing special. They were covered with diced onions for some reason. Anyway to the most important part, the food, I tried some of my friends Deviled Eggs, which were the best I have ever had, but I am kind of whatever about deviled eggs to be honest, so take that for what's it's worth. However, the Original ribeye melt was to freaking die for soooo good, excellent! This place is a little on the pricey side, but everything is going up fast currently so there's that. The place is gorgeous! Loved sitting on the 2nd floor overlooking the bar. Our server was friendly and attentive. The asparagus fries were OMGoodness! My family and I have been coming here for years, which is why this experience was so disappointing. We visited on Father's Day and had a reservation for 7:45 PM. Unfortunately, despite having a reservation, we had to wait about 20 minutes because our table was not ready. We had specifically requested a booth and mentioned that we did not want to be seated at the Chef's Table, yet we were seated there anyway. There were four of us, and the space was extremely cramped. We were constantly bumping into each other's feet because there was so little room. We asked if it would be possible to move to another table, but we were told the restaurant was fully booked for the evening. On top of that, being seated directly next to the kitchen meant dealing with nonstop noise throughout our meal, which made it difficult to enjoy the experience. What was especially confusing was the concept of the "Chef's Table." If it's intended to provide a unique dining experience, we certainly didn't receive one. The chef never came out or interacted with guests, so it felt like we were simply seated in an uncomfortable location next to a busy kitchen. To make matters worse, my father ordered his steak well done, but it arrived medium rare. The steak had to be sent back and recooked, which further delayed our meal. Overall, this was the most disappointing experience we've had here. As longtime customers, we never expected the service and accommodations to fall so far below the standard we've come to expect. What was most frustrating was that no effort was made to address our concerns or offer any accommodation after multiple issues throughout the evening. We have always enjoyed dining here, which is why this experience was particularly upsetting. Shout out to Nick's for saving our Saturday lunch! My family and I originally had planned to go to Houston's, but they ended up being unable to accommodate our increased party size. It was an awkward time of day so a lot of the other restaurants were not open yet. I called Nick's and they quoted a 1.5 hour wait time for a party of 5, but thank GOODNESS they called me back about 30 mins later saying they had a table ready :) The restaurant had a nice upscale ambiance, and we were seated by the kitchen so we got to see the cleanliness and quality of ingredients. We had two kids with us and even though they don't have a physical kids menu, our waitress was able to list off a few things they offer for kids - one of which included a kid's filet, how cute is that?? For my drink, I ordered the Crisp Martini. Although it was a good drink in theory, I prefer Houston's. My aunt ordered a cucumber colins which I had a sip of and also enjoyed. For our appetizer, we ordered plain sourdough with butter and the spinach & artichoke dip. Both were fantastic!!! Besides the dip being amazing, the salsa that accompanied it was also delicious. We also ordered the California salad to share which was the perfect balance of sweet, savory, and crunchy. For my mom, I ordered the French dip sandwich with a side of fries. The meat was incredibly tender and flavorful, and paired greatly with the au jus and horseradish sauce. The fries were crispy yet tender, and their ranch was also delicious. My mom and aunt shared the blackened mahi-mahi sandwich and the top sirloin. Both dishes were also great. Our kiddos also enjoyed their filet and buttered pasta. We put ourselves on the waitlist and were quoted an hour wait. After an hour and a half had passed, we inquired and they tried to tell us that they told us a 2 hour wait. (They didn't) in reality, I believe they forgot about us or didn't have us added to the waitlist correctly, or perhaps skipped us. They then told us we were "next" and we waited another 40 minutes being next in line. I understand that reservations must be seated in a timely way, but please just be honest about the wait. We ended up waiting over 2 hours but we would have just chosen something else if we had been told up front. Once we were seated, the service was inattentive and inconsistent. We ordered two appetizers - a spinach dip and tuna crispy rice. The spinach dip came out room temperature and was desperately lacking in salt. The crispy tuna rice was chewy and gummy. Our 9 year old got a steak kids meal and she really enjoyed it. We also got a fried chicken entree that was pretty decent. We got a tiki twist and it was very tart and missing any sweetness. The lighting is dim but ample to able to read the menu. We ordered apps: spinach dip with chips & asparagus fries. Both were excellent, refill on the hot & fresh tortilla chips was appreciated. I ordered the salmon meant to be served with mashed potatoes but unfortunately they were out of this side. It was remedied by replacing it with grilled asparagus (with bacon bits!). Prosciutto and Burrata Pizza (4/5) - If you're in the mood for something lighter or refreshing, this is a good choice. Cha Cha's Spicy Rigatoni (5/5) - Solid dish with a nice spicy, creamy sauce, slightly smaller portion size though. Plenty of parking in the back lot. On weekends it can get super crowded, so I definitely recommend making a reservation. Service can be a little slow at times, but the food makes up for it. I made reservations on OpenTable and it was very easy. Upon arrival we headed to the front of the table to notify them of the reservation and was brought to our table. We tried asparagus fries, sirloin steak, Chilean seabass, pork ribs and cioppino. Everything tasted delicious. The only thing that we thought would be very special, the asparagus fries since its a signature of theirs just tasted regular like fried zucchini. Wow, this place was CROWDED on a Wednesday afternoon. I looked around to see the crowd and it was either business people or retirees. Although I do ask them to use Tito's versus Tequila. Tequila and I have not been friends for a while. It's no use airing our dirty laundry but Tequila has done me wrong. And if you are friends with Tequila let me steer you away by letting you know that Nick also has really good lemon drops...yes vodka again but it's not Tito's. It's some sort of citron vodka. Yum! Joined the Waitlist via Yelp - and upon reaching was told it would take ~45 mins to get seated (We were party of 2 and 1st on Waitlist ! ) They advised to get bar seating which we managed to find. We requested if we could order drinks at the bar but would prefer to be seated at the table for food. The hostess said they will try, but I doubt they did. Other than this hiccup of not getting a seat even after waiting for 40 minutes everything else here was great. The pizza was very good. Drinks were great , our bartender was awesome.
