They postpone my appointment time the day before, and then 30 minutes before the appointment 2-hour window, they call to cancel saying their technician is sick. Seems like they don't have enough technicians. I made the appointment well in advance and I'm disappointed that they don't have a backup technician to fill in. Our dryer vent was quite clogged, so I was quite thankful that it was cleaned, especially since there are have been 10 fires in Raleigh Just from dryer vents. We couldn't be more satisfied with the service we have received from Smoke Alert and Lonnie Harp the technician who has now cleaned our dry vent and serviced our fireplace again during our routine maintenance visits. He is extremely efficient, explained what he is doing during the process, cleans up after both services. He checks our fire extinguishers and all the fire/smoke/ carbon monoxide detectors for outdated or expired devices and at the previous routine visit gave us information to replace the units needing to be replaced. There is a certain comfort in knowing that he is a firefighter and knows what things to check for than could become problematic. They were excellent and THOROUGH for our dryer vent cleaning. Our vent goes out our rooftop on the third floor! Way up high. No way was anyone getting on a ladder other than a professional to clear out that vent. The first time they came out I didn't realize that they would need to get on the roof to clean the vent. It was a rainy day so they rescheduled and came back a week later and completed the job. It was not an additional 'trip cost' as some companies would do. I appreciated that. read more

!!!SCAM ALERT!!! I called this company to see if they would provide a quote to remove my vented natural gas firebox/logs and replace the entire system with a new ventless fire box and logs. The lady insisted that their company needs to do a complete inspection and cleaning of the existing firebox & logs for $200 prior to them providing a quote to replace the system.... WHAT??? HELLO... I'm removing and replacing that system with a new one!!!! Why would I want to pay $200 to inspect and clean a system that will be removed and discarded???? That makes no sense... She tried to put the sales whammy on me insisting they are a qualified company and that the inspection and cleaning is required before they provide a quote... This is complete rubbish as I've had 2 other qualified companies bid on this job and neither had this requirement. If this company wishes to charge to provide a bid they need to be honest and transparent vs. providing misleading information to potential customers. read more

Gaslogs wouldn't light with remote or wall switch. Someone on nextdoor listserv recommended smoke alert. Lengthy wait for an appointment, but Lonnie harp was worth it. Showed us the workings of the gaslogs-no one else had done that. Then he checked our hardwired smoke detectors-I always thought all you had to do was change the batteries! Turns out they only have a ten year life-ours are going on 19 years!! Checked the carbon monoxide detector and our fire extinguishers. Lonnie from Smoke Alert provided excellent advice and pointers on converting an older, wood-burning fireplace to an easily manageable gas insert. They installed it and have provided not only great maintenance for the fireplace, but they also inspect the house smoke alarms, dryer vent and fire extinguishers, talk about ways to exit the house in case of fire, etc. I can't imagine we could have found anyone more knowledgeable or that anyone could have done a better job for us. My only complaint is that I couldn't get ahold of the company by calling them, as there is no "on hold" option. You have to wait for them to get back to you after you leave a message. read more

My neighbor informed me that I had soot coming from a vent on the side of my house. Upon inspecting, I saw it was coming from my gas fireplace vent. Rodney was my tech and was a retired firefighter. He cleaned my fireplace and logs and repositioned them for a cleaner burn, explaining everything I needed to know about gas fireplaces. What was supposed to be a routine vent cleaning became a major repair when our technician located a ruptured duct. Smoke Alert cleaned my chimney in Garner that had never been cleaned. He did what he said he would do. He explained the process and I watched. After cleaning he made pictures from the top the chimney. He emailed the pictures to me. Additional work recommended for top of chimney where the concrete is at top of blocks. He did a Level 1 cleaning which was $350. Level 11 and Level 111 is more expensive. The company will recommend more things and will also tell you what the current Fire Code Regulations are which you should also look up and read for yourself. But do ask questions. I easily scheduled a dryer vent cleaning and had an appointment scheduled at a convenient time for me. They sent reminders and confirmed arrival a few days before, and he was right on time. The service was thorough, and he explained the process, what to expect, and reviewed how they monitor the flow before and after the cleaning to check dryer efficiency and any blockages. I love the added info and education about fire safety with some good reminders about changing batteries in fire alarms, having a fire escape plan, and checking fire extinguishers.
